Fall Classic - Game 5 - Yankees v. Phillies

Sunday night’s game was quite a doozy. CC Sabathia took the mound for the NY Yankees on just 3 days rest against Joe Blanton of the Philadelphia Phillies. He did pretty well, the same as the first game, giving up only two runs through 6 2/3 innings. And then, Sabathia faced Chase Utley int he lineup again, though this time, Utley took Sabathia yard. Yep. It was reminiscent of the first game Sabathia pitched in the World Series when Utley got two homers off of him. This time, Utley smacked a big ol’ homer, a “no doubter,” as we say, into the right field stands. And, Sabathia’s day was done, though he left with a 4-3 lead. Demaso Marte came in to get the last out, which he did, and then Martes’s day was done.

The hard-throwing reliever(then starting pitcher, now reliever again) Joba Chamberlain came in for the 8th inning, and tried to preserve the Yankees lead long enough to get it to Mariano Rivera. He was hurling 97mph fastballs, and doing his job, getting two relatively fast outs. Until Pedro Feliz stepped up to the plate. Oh, Chamberlain threw some 97mph fastballs his way, too, even got a couple of strikes on him with that fastball. But Feliz was ready for the last one, and smashed it into the left field stands. The score was tied at 4 all.

Then came the craziest ninth inning I have ever seen. The Philies reliever, Brad Lidge came in, hoping to keep the Yankees scoreless so the Phillies would have their chance to even up the series in the bottom of the ninth. Lidge got the first two outs, then came Johnny Damon. Well, this was a battle. Lidge threw 9 pitches to Damon, with the 9th turned into a single by Damon. This is where it just got wild. Damon stole second very early in the count against the next batter, Mark Teixeira. In the most amazing steal I have ever seen, Damon realized that Lidge was not covering third. Feliz had come from third to cover second when Damon stole second. Damon popped up from second, seeing Felix there with the ball, and no one on third, Damon took off. He stole third safely, and was now 90 ft from home plate.

Lidge ended up hitting the next batter, Teixiera, which brought A-Rod to the plate. A-Rod had been held hit-less in the game - until then. A-rod he hit a double, scoring Damon easily. Jorge Posada came up next, and hit a single, scoring two runs, and was out at second when he tried to stretch his hit into a double. By then, the damage was done - the Yankees led 7-4.

Mariano Rivera came in and did what he does - got three quick outs, all recorded by Teixeia at first base. The Yankees now lead the Series 3 -1.

It is “Make It Or Break It” time for the Phillies in tonight’s game. They are one Yankee win away from losing the World Series. Naturally, the Phillies are calling upon Cliff Lee, the winner of Game 1 in which he pitched a Complete Game Shutout, giving up 6 hits, and one unearned run. The Phillies and fans are hoping that Lee, their star ace, can repeat the phenomenal game he pitched in New York, thus keeping them in this Series. The good news for the Philly Faithful is that Lee is on his regular rotation, so he should be well rested for this all-important game. The bad news is that more Yankees’ bats have woken up some since Lee pitched. Still, the Phillies have to like their chances with Lee in the game.(Photo by artolog)

On the other side of the diamond, pitching for the Yankees, is AJ Burnett. Pitching on just three days rest, Burnett hopes to repeat HIS win, in which he gave up just four hits, and one run. Burnett has been a somewhat temperamental pitcher throughout the regular season, but he has really come through in the Postseason despite his loss to the Angels (many feel Girardi never should have put him back out on the mound after sitting for over half an hour). The Yankees hope he will be able to continue that trend tonight to clinch the World Series Championship in five games.

This should be an exciting game tonight, especially since it is a must-win for the Phillies. Though last night’s game will be hard to beat! Still, this one has all the ingredients to be a real nail-biter.

As always, I hope to see y’all here, Yankees and Phillie fans both!

Brrrrrrr, Amy! At 42 degrees, it’s gonna be ‘chilly in Philly’ tonight. BUT, our red hot Yankees will warm up the place.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 19:26:16

No doubt, AL! They have been on fire recently, that’s for sure!

And helenk, I have to disagree - that was a stupid call, no doubt abt it, though the Phillies got out of it just fine with no runs off of the bad call (which I prefer - I hate runs scored on questionable calls for my team. I want them to earn them fair and square). The faux double play with Howard was a BIG one since it would have loaded the bases with one out. The possibility that impacted the game more for the Yanks is pretty high, I’d think.

Bottom line, the umps have been TERRIBLE - the balls/strikes calls have been poor; check swings, poor; and calls in the midst of play, poor. There have been few calls they have gotten RIGHT.

And these are supposed to be the BEST umpires out there?? That’s scary.

Speaking of - you probably didn’t see this one, but Derek Jeter was called out at third even though he wasn’t tagged out. Derek, correctly, challenged the call, and the third base umpire said he didn’t have to be tagged. Wrong. The head umpire - after the game was over - said Derek was absolutely right, and he should have been safe. Apparently, they have umps working in MLB who don’t even know their own rules! Sheesh.

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-11-02 20:39:43

the third base umpire said he didn’t have to be tagged. Wrong

When the ball hit the camera lense, it was home run. Everybody knew it. But the Umpires had to have meeting on the merits of ACORN before making the call.

That call at third was hysterical.

EJ, I like how you think! ;-)

Did y’all see that Melky Cabrera is out? He hurt his hamstring last night running out a ground ball to first. Brett Gardner will take center field, and MLB agreed to allow Ramiro Pena, an infielder, to come off the inactive roster since Cabrera won’t be available for the rest of the series (Girardi said if this had happened during the regular season, Melky would be out for a couple of weeks).

I’m with you, Jillie - let’s go, Yanks!

Rev. And you thought I was a Philly fan. LOL

NY born and raised, and have had Yankee baseball cards flapin on the spokes of the my bicycle wheels since I was knee high to a baseball bat.

I will miss the the beginning of the game ’cause I have to fix a exchange server that crashed, but hey there is the web…

Any live feed on the web?

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 20:04:20

I was surprised last night, Teak - I THOUGHT you were from NY from a comment you made to me a long time ago during a radio show!! I must have misread what you wrote - sorry!!!! :-)

MLB.com has one, but I think you have to pay for it. BUT, you can watch the Gameday at mlb.com and see all of the balls/strikes, runs, etc.

Nice start to the game thus far, eh, Yankees fans??

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-11-02 20:10:19

I always like a close game, but the Philly’s have had four home runs with nobody on. They have to get on base before it gets smack out of the park. LOL. The 9th inning last was a comedy of errors.

Oh and Rev. You never have to apologize to me. :)

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-11-02 20:18:09

I love the radio play as well.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 20:15:04

Hello peeps. Sorry I missed the last two games, I wasn’t near a computer this weekend. It was nice to be missed, but I am back tonight.

Amy as far as the umps are concerned, these are supposed to be the most experienced and the best. Amazing, isn’t it?

Let’s see what Burnett brings tonight. You never know with this guy.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 20:22:26

Uh, yes - you got that right. He is streaky. And now we know. Still, Victorino would not have gotten hit had he not been trying to bunt. And then he’s on base for the homer by Utley. I guess that ends the string of solo homeruns…

Sigh.

And thanks, Teak - you’re sweet!

Lana, you crack me up. Wouldn’t it be funny to act like these ballplayers at your job? Can you imagine spitting everywhere, too, as you walk along? Or spit sunflower shells everywhere at your desk? How abt going to a meeting with a big wad of gum in your mouth, blowing bubbles all the time? Teehee!

Comment by Lana | 2009-11-02 20:15:46

Ok so I want a job where everyone admires me for working after “only” 3 days rest. Or the one where I can be wrong as much as I want and don’t have to know the rules and they still pay me. Can anyone get me one of those??? :)

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-02 20:17:06

Hey Pie Man, settle down and get some outs!

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 20:19:21

Well Lana, if you can’t find a job as a major league pitcher, maybe you can try weather forecaster. They seem to be wrong a majority of the time and don’t seem to work very much to me.

Comment by Lana | 2009-11-02 20:42:55

Ha! Ok, if I strike out (ooh, bad pun) in the major leagues I’ll look into weather forecasting. How hard is it to look out the window?

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-02 20:21:30

Burnett had a bad first inning in one of the ALCS playoff games, but then settled down nicely. Hopefully the same will happen here. Hopefully.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 20:22:10

Geez Burnett is stinking up the joint so far.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 20:25:11

Now I’m really depressed. I was just over at the Drudge report and there is a picture on The One with a bottle of fruit punch Gatorade. That’s my drink of choice. He’s ruined Kool-aid for me and now this.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 20:29:34

Oh, J…I am so sorry. Hmmm. What else can you drink?

And you are SO right abt weather casters! I have long said I wish I had a job where I could be wrong just abt all the time and still KEEP my job!!

Good point, AL - he seems to have settled back down now. ANd since the Yankees are actually getting runs now, maybe they can overcome this deficit, too?

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 20:39:58

Well, since I just bought six big bottles of Gatorade, I have time to figure that out.

Though Molina didn’t get a hit, he did have a good at bat. Lee seems to be throwing more balls this time than the last game.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 20:48:26

Yes, he does. I think they can get to them, and if AJ can get/keep it together, it will give them a chance.

LOL - all abt timing, JMM. Hey, maybe someone just handed him that kind and he doesn’t even like it. Yeah, that’s the ticket! He was doing a Gatorade commercial to go along with his George Lopez commercial, seeing what options will be available for his next gig! ;-)

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 20:52:11

Tired of hearing about Victorino’s hand. We had five hit batsman—A-Rod three times. No mention of their injuries.

Don’t get me started on the George Lopez commercials. Why would a sitting President lower himself and the office to do them?

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-11-02 20:58:45

Why would a sitting President lower himself and the office to do them?

The Change I can believe in?
gag!!!

He stumbles his lines to boot. AHHH!
Well for himself he has only a few microns left to go, as for the office? Because the Lincoln bedroom was in use.

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-02 21:06:25

Maybe he has endorsement deals? He’s probably making millions. In the next official portrait of the family, will they all be wearing Nike?

These walks are killing us!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-02 21:09:18

Utley is killing us, too!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 21:11:46

No kidding, J - they never acknowledged how it might be a bit painful for A-Rod to hit after BEING hit 3 times, or Tex twice. But Victorino? When Joe said, “We might be going overboard a bit,” my reaction was, “you THINK??”

And now, AJ the bad pitcher is gone. He is the most hot/cold pitcher we’ve had in a while. WOW.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 21:08:12

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 21:23:41

LOL - no worries.

Mandelay, you are right. I have been concerned abt Joe’s big idea of basically only having 3 starters, and we’re seeing that now.

We CAN come back, though honestly, now would be the time to take out Cano. He’s killing us, too. Not ONE RBI. He comes up with RISP almost every time, and has done nothing. He had two RBI chances already in this game and got out. Again. Sheesh.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-02 21:28:27

I don’t think have anyone else to put in. Maybe Hairston?

I bet she is getting anxious, J! Neat that she’s going to find out at the time, too.

I love Tex, and he is a phenomenal first baseman. But he is KILLING us at the plate. He has left 22 people in scoring position. Another run there would have been nice…

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 21:57:36

And that is EXACTLY why I thought Gardner should have been playing in the outfield instead of Swisher. WOW. I hope he’s okay…

Oh, and J, thanks for the heads up abt Hillary. I knew she was going to be on at some point soon. I’ll probably catch it tomorrow on video…(Hope springs eternal, you know?)

Comment by Texas Playwright | 2009-11-02 22:11:42

Hey, R3 Amy. I hope you read this post. I am SO pleased to see a fellow American enjoying an American sport with such passion. Baseball is not my game; I like hearing about people enjoying what they do, including their hobbies, which involve “studying up” on the subject matter at hand, eagerly sharing their knowledge with others and inspiring others to have fun learning the fundamentals of SOMETHING.

Just think if more of us ran our country this way. Bill, Hillary and Sarah already do.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Revrend Amy | 2009-11-03 08:51:17

Texas, thank you for coming by, and for the lovely comment! That you don’t even follow baseball but came here anyway says a lot! That is just downright COOL!

And oh, do you have a point…Even when the Yankees lose, as long as the game is well played, you just have to tip your hat to the other team. Last night’s game was sloppy for our pitcher, though I am sure when Joe Girardi studied up with HIS book (have you seen it? It’s the size of an unabridged dictionary), it looked like the right thing to do.

You know, you’re right abt people studying up, and how different our country would be now, and it sure would be. But, one thing abt sports is that people take responsibility for their actions, and admit when they wrong.

For instance, I was reading the post-game article this morning, and Burnett wouldn’t let anyone else but him take the blame for losing that game. That’s mighty stand-up in my book. Can you imagine a politician doing that and MEANING it??? Yes, he gave up 6 runs, but one of the relief pitchers gave up the 2 that won the game. Still, Burnett wouldn’t hear it - it was his fault for putting his team in that kind of hole in the first place. Wow!

Thanks for coming by!

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-02 22:19:01

You’ve got such nice stories, Teak. Keep ‘em coming.

RRR Amy, our offense is so flat. I feel badly for Texeira. His first post-season with the Yankees is reminiscent of A-Rod’s first lackluster years in the Bronx.

The Red Sox fans in my house are “wicked” happy that the Yankees are losing. And they call Yankee fans obnoxious.

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-11-02 22:28:32

My sane half is rootin’ for Philly saying the same thing…however

“I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn’t my fault that I’m not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?”

Yogi Berra

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-02 22:29:24

LOL abt the Red Sox fans. And, IMHO, ironic that they call YANKEES fans “obnoxious.” I had a guy talking smack to me just the other day for wearing a Yankees shirt (he was behind the counter, serving me, I might add). I NEVER say crap to Red Sox fans, but they sure never fail to say something to me. Sheesh!

I know - Tex is really, really struggling, at the WORST possible time. We could easily be tied now if he and Cano could possibly come through with RISP.

And WTH with Jorge and the “gimme” strike?? He CLEARLY called for time, and they give Lee the strike anyway? That’s just cheap. These umpires have been abysmal

And Teak - you crack me up! I went to all of ONE Mets game when I was at Union/ It was nowhere NEAT as much fun as hanging out in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium. But it’s cute why you liked them! :-)

Indeed. Coke’s two homeruns are the difference. He is usually only in for one out. We saw why tonight. Pitching to Utley was the difference, too.

As well as Tex choking, Cano choking, Swisher choking…

Dangit. I really thought they might come back to at least tie it in the 9th. They were darn close…

Johnny Damon is something else - makes me so glad I have the baseball signed by him (the foul ball hit by A-Rod that hit my partner during Batting Practice)…

Guess I’ll be seeing y’all Weds. night!

Well, typical to the average grousing Philly fan, my husband and father-in-law complained how a win is not a perfect win and how it could’a, would’a, should’a been better.

Yikes!!!!

I’m really glad I’m not a sports’ fanatic. But at least I know my husband will sleep reasonably well tonight.

The Philly’s won, right? Well, if you talked to my husband, you wouldn’t know it :0).

There’s a reason the Philly fans are considered the toughest in the country!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Revrend Amy | 2009-11-03 08:55:56

ROTFLMAO - that is too funny, Peggy Sue! I understand, though, but from my side, it’s, “Why the heck are they pitching to this guy?” And, “why in the world is Phil Coke still in?” I reckon there is always going to be something…

It got pretty exciting there at the end, right?
