Fall Classic - Game 6 - Phillies At Yankees

Monday night, the Phillies did what they needed to do - they won. They got to AJ Burnett early on, forcing Burnett out before he had completed 3 innings. Unfortunately, many Yankee fans were not surprised by this, having grown familiar with his hot and cold performances. In just 2 2/3 innings, Chase Utley hit a 3 run homer (the first homer that was not a solo shot), with one of the runners on base having been walked by Burnett. Ultimately, Burnett was responsible for 6 runs, all earned.

The Yankees bats were slow to warm up, but just like Sunday’s game, they made a game of it. Had Yankees reliever Phil Coke not given up a second home run to Chase Utley, as well as one by Raul Ibanez, the outcome may have been different. The second Chase Utley home run proved to be the difference in the game, and tied him with Reggie Jackson’s World Series record of five. Ironically, Utley’s regular season .282 BA and 31 HRs would not have indicated he would have joined such elite company as Yankee Great Jackson with his five home runs, but that’s baseball. And that’s Utley, who has kept his team in this Series with his bat and defense on the field.

The Yankees, down 8-2 came storming back, and had a chance to tie the game in the 9th with Johnny Damon coming through yet again. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Mark Teixeira’s slumping at the plate continued, and Madson struck him out for the save. The series now stands at 3-2, with the Yankees looking to clinch their 27th World Series Championship as they return home to Yankee Stadium tonight.

Speaking of Chase Utley, I just have to ask this: what is up with his hair? I assure you, I am not the only one who is asking. In case you don’t know what I am talking about, check it out:

It reminds me of a “Little Rascals” show I saw when I was a child in which how Alfalfa did his hair was revealed. He took down a big can of lard, scooped a huge handful out, and plopped it right down on top of his head. At least according to the article linked above, Utley uses a gel product so he doesn’t get hat hair. Sure. Because the lard look is SO much better…Dude - go with the hat hair already. Anyway, the man can hit, that much is certain, though why the Yankees continue to pitch to him is NOT. (Walk the man already!)

(cubbienation)

And speaking of pitchers, up for the Phillies tonight is Pedro Martinez, of “Yankees Are My Daddy” fame. He is hoping that he shows the Yankees who THEIR daddy is. In their last meeting, the Yankees prevailed, winning 3 -1 in Game 2. Martinez, pitching on regular rest, will work to get the Phillies to Game 7.

(new york yankees blog)

On the Yankees side is Andy Pettitte, who hopes to lead the Yankees to their 27th World Series Championship tonight. He already holds the postseason win record at 17, having picked up his last one in Game 3 against the Phillies. He struggled in that game, giving up 4 runs, but the Yankee bats managed to get him the win despite his shaky outing. The Yankees will strive to get him his 18th win, even though he is pitching on short rest, to clinch the Series.

Here is what Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has to say about the match-up, and the games in general:

Video: Rosenthal: WS Game 6 Preview

One thing is for sure, this will be another nail-biter for fans of both teams. Who will prevail, Martinez or Pettitte? Will Chase Utley smack another home run? Will Mark Teixiera finally get his bat going? Tune in tonight at 7:57pm on Fox (ugh - McCarver and Buck again) to see if the Series ends tonight, or if the drama continues tomorrow.

As always, I hope to see y’all here, Yankees and Phillie fans both!

Hey, Helenk! Another fine example of the strut! Thank you!

I guess you’re right, though the Yanks and fans will be singing, “New York, New York!”!

Here’s to a good, clean game tonight!

LOL - that is SO cute, Mandelay!!

Me, too, but I am NERVOUS! I just want this game started already.

I am so, so hoping Tex gets his mojo back…

Is everybody ready? Go Yankees.

I saw the Phillies’ buses again today. Considered them overlooked.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 19:16:24

Oh, GOOD JOB, J! I was hoping you’d get a chance to do that. Whew - now I REALLY feel better!!! :-D

Go, YANKEES!!!

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 19:21:13

Are you kidding Amy? I kept checking the street looking for the buses. In the morning, before 12N, they were shooting 30 Rock on 56th Street and there were trailers parked where I saw the buses last week. I was worried, but the trailers were gone by 1P.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 19:31:30

ROTFLMAO - way to go, J! Checking for the buses…I can just see you going over there telling those 30 Rock people to move their trailers so you could give the Phillies the evil eye!

You know, I bet they would!!!

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-04 19:23:16

I have a feeling Pettitte will not be at his strongest, which means we need every bat to produce. Texeira and Cano need to come out of their slumps.

J, I’m glad you “eyed” the Phillies buses again. Nice work.

RRR Amy, Chase Utley’s goopy hairstyle reminds me of Jason Giambi. When Jason was on the Yankees, he always slicked his hair back with grease.

The Yankees MUST win tonight. My son is performing in Arsenic & Old Lace at his school and tomorrow is opening night. If there’s a game 7, you guys will have to text me updates. I’ll be at the theater. :)

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 19:35:34

Hey, AL -

I’m really hoping that since Andy struggled so much in the last game, he will do better in this one. He said, in response to the 3 day rest question, that he pitched the last one after 6 days rest, and felt bad, so, you just never know.

I hope he will step it up big time for this game.

YES, Jason!! I swear, though, all I can see is that clip from “The Little Rascals.” (Oh, one thing I picked up abt Chase - he and his wife are BIG animal lovers!)

You betcha we will, but I am REALLY hoping you will be watching your son act basking in the warm glow of your favorite baseball team having just won their 27th championship! :-D

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 19:44:48

Awww, that Derek Jeter was so cute as a little boy.

It’s only 48 degrees here. Chilly on the field, I’ll bet.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 19:46:41

No doubt. He’s pretty darn cute as a big man, too! :-)

Yeah, Gameday says it’s 47…

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 20:13:01

I know, right?

Well, Tex didn’t get it out, but that was a NICE swing - and it was darn close to a homer. I think that is a good sign.

Hey, Sandy! Welcome to the party!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 20:14:28

Yes, a very encouraging swing. I am rooting for Tex to send it out of the park, right down Broadway!

I can hear my boy chanting ‘Who’s your daddy’ again. They must be out of control in the bleachers.

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-04 20:18:52

Jeter hit the ball hard, too. I think we can get to Pedro. Did any of you see the funny photo of Pedro in the NY Post today? It was hilarious. Wish I could post it in a comment. I can’t even find the URL anymore.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 20:25:21

I’ll see if I can find it - I didn’t see it…

I thought so, too, AL - he seemed pleased that he was able to get such a good swing on it (Jeet, that is).

J, I mentioned what you said, and now my partner is doing it, too!

Oh, me, too, Mandelay! I think it’s coming for Tex…

Other than that, Pettitte really seems on tonight.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 20:51:09

Gardner looked lost out there. Get some sort of a hit and make up for it.

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 21:06:09

No, Martinez did not get A-Rod. The umpire got A-Rod with a monumentally bad call.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 21:10:26

That was horrible - absolutely horrible. The umpire took the bat out of A-Rod’s hands. I hope he smokes one out of the park the next time he comes up!

Oh, my gosh - I am going to have to get a new jersey with Godzilla’s number on it!!!!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 21:07:45

Tim says it all: 4-1 Matsui!

More sake please!!!!!!!

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-04 21:11:05

I hope Andy’s arm didn’t stiffen during that long 1/2 inning in the dugout.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 21:13:11

Me, too - so far, so good…

Comment by Screw-the-DNC | 2009-11-04 21:12:53

Matsui says “konichiwa bitches!”

H/T to Dave Chappelle

Now Pedro knows - Matsui is his Daddy!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 21:28:25

Teehee - good one!

I know - DAMON!!!

What is UP with this umpire?? He started out pretty good, and has really gotten bad in the past inning. No wonder Andy was mad at him - he gave away abt 4 strikes, calling them balls. Pitiful.

These are supposed to be the best of the best of the umps. That’s quite an indictment.

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-04 21:14:40

Oh, no! Damon pulled a calf muscle and is out for the game. That’s a real loss in the lineup.

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 21:17:36

I am sad to see him out … love the guy! Thank you, Johnny Damon!!!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 21:42:04

Love to see that double play!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 21:43:40

Absolutely - that’s pretty much what I was yelling, too! Go, Andy!! :-)

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-04 21:58:42

Okay, I feel I must apologize for all the bad talk I was heaving on Matsui last week when he looked lost at the plate. Boy, was I wrong . . . and thank goodness Joe Girardi kept him in the lineup. WOW!!!!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 21:58:43

Just a triple from the cycle!! Woohoo, Matsui!!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 22:00:20

Wow, that would be peachy!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 22:16:47

No worries, AL - I totally understand!

Well, this umpire gave them Run 2 by not calling the strikes Andy threw. Nice. He takes the bat out of A-Rod’s hands with the bases loaded, and gives the Phillies pitchers strikes of the plate, both inside and outside. I hope the Yanks tack on a few more runs just in case…

And Matsui’s triple will be a part of that! :-)

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 22:20:11

I don’t know if Matsui can leg out a triple. I, too, wanted to bench him. Shows you what I know.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 22:30:13

Oh, I figure it would have to be an inside-the-park home run for Matsui to make a triple!

Hey, so did I. He was struggling before, though. Who knew he just needed more pressure???

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 22:41:56

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 22:51:47

Hahaha. Or knowing this is probably his last game as a Yankee.

Look at Marte. Who’d a thunk he’d have a post season like this.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 22:44:11

Wow, that ump gave Ruiz two extra strikes. Must be his birthday.

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 22:54:28

LOL! You’re killin’ me!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 23:35:48

I think I have mentioned - abt a gazillion times - that I use the MLB Gameday - not only does it show the strikes and balls, but the speed, the type of pitch, the degrees the pitch drops, pretty cool technology, actually. But as you can tell, it can be infuriating, too, to see how the umps actually call the game…

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 22:51:47

Okay, who else here is amazed at Marte in the postseason? Especially striking out UTLEY? Holy smokes!

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 22:53:48

Great minds think alike Amy. And at exactly the same time too.

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-11-04 22:55:43

Very impressive. So, do you think Marte comes back in the 8th . . . or do we see Mariano?

Comment by JMM | 2009-11-04 23:02:04

One batter in the 8th for Marte.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 23:16:56

Yep, and here comes Mo…

Wow, y’all - I’m hopeful and anxious all at the same time. Whew…

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-11-04 23:16:15

Absolutely, Marte is an unexpected treasure. He pitches with such confidence … amazing!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-11-04 23:20:04

Yes, since he came back from his injury, he’s been pretty good.

Oh, and Werth got an extra strike, too. Sigh…

Let’s go, MO!!!!!

What a SERIES!! How wonderful to get their 27th win in their first season in the new stadium. Awesome!

It’s been a blast, y’all!

And to the Philly fans, your team played its heart out - they deserve a lot of credit. I tip my hat to them.

Comment by Texas Playwright | 2009-11-05 07:37:54

Congrats, R3 Amy, for leading the NQ team through all the fun. Well done, Yankees and Phillies. I make this World Series analogous to Dems/GOP Election 2008, except the baseball teams and even umpires/referees with whatver mistakes seemed to be way more fair and showed more class than many politicians and pundits.

How one plays the game still matters to me. A clean win makes a clean conscience.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Revrend Amy | 2009-11-05 08:50:32

Thanks so much, Texas - I appreciate that!

Yes, they have far more class than many of our political pundits, to be sure, and work their hearts out for their fans. Both teams, just to be clear.

And you are right - how the game is played DOES matter. How the players treat each other matters, too. I loved watching m Derek talk and laugh with whoever ended up on second base. There’s a reason why he is considered one of the classiest ballplayers in baseball…

(Btw - the few times the Yankees got, um, favorable strike calls, I said the same thing as I did for the Phillies - “that’s not a strike.” Sometimes it evens out, sometimes it doesn’t, and when it doesn’t, it makes the win all the sweeter. But I know umpires are people, too, and I wouldn’t want their job at all. So, there’s that. Still, there were some bad, bad calls. Maybe they could all use a refresher over the off-season?)

It was awesome hanging out with you all! Thanks so much for *watching* with me!

Damon? Clutch RBIs?
Pettitte? Won 2 games?
ARod? clutch RBIs and sentimental first-timer vote?

Comment by Pennsylvania Caucasian | 2009-11-05 10:26:38

I have heard that the Yankees need to cheat to win -
(see: A-Roid) but it’s news to me that the fans use black magic as well.

I guess that explains why the Phillies of World Series 2009 were not the same team we followed all season.

So - yes your malocchio did its job, just remember, anything evil sent out comes back to you tenfold.

You know, I watched that Mummer Strut thing, and I’m not sure I get it. It seems to almost border on an intentional act of excessively opulent pride. Unfortunately, we seem to have a POTUS who is an expert at such practices, and it isn’t a good thing. However, I suppose if the strut is merely an expression and acknowledgement of one’s own self worth, I can understand the theraputic benefits of the practice. And the Yankees still suck!

Go Mariners!
