Democracy Abolished by Howard Dean and Barack Obama [Updated]

Written by Mel with minor additions from Uppity Woman and me. Video thanks to C.S.

It’s fair to say that we expect our leaders to educate us accurately. That’s not a lot to ask, is it?  But that’s not what Donna Brazile did when she discussed the procedures of the DNC’s Credential Committee on ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos.

[UPDATE: I like what Paul Krugman says in the video about what he hears from "grassroots" Hillary supporters. I am grateful that SOMEONE is listening to people like me and you. Of course, Donna Brazile butts in, and ignores Krugman's entire point as well as his plea. -- SusanUnPC]

Brazile said:

I think we have an exit strategy in the Democratic party to end the primary season on June 10th. That’s the end of the primary season based on the rules, and after all this is about the rules. So sometime before July 4th, I am clear that the super-delegates will break one way or another and this thing will end. Whoever is coming up with this new strategy is not looking at the map again.

Howard Dean has already appointed 25 members [of the credentials committee].  The states will send three persons, three people to the convention, on the Credentials Committee. Obama has won more states.

Enter those pesky rules (damn them when they aren’t going your way). The rules state:

Each standing committee shall be composed of: People allocated to the states and territories in accordance with the same distribution formula used to allocate delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

The rules of the DNC further state on pages 8 and 9:

      A. Membership: Subject to Rule 20.C. of the Delegate Selection Rules, each standing committee shall be composed of:

         1. Base: A base of 161 members, casting 158 votes, allocated to the states and territories in accordance with the same distribution formula used to allocate delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

         2. PLEOs: 25 members, each casting one (1) vote who shall be Party Leaders and Elected Officials.

TalkLeft‘s Big Tent Democrat analyzed ongoing discussions on the credentials committee process at another blog, and discovered that they have it right. Explains BTD:

  • Obama presently has 70.22 votes.
  • Clinton has 61.44 votes.
  • Up for grabs in the 10 States are 26.33 votes.
  • Dean has already seated the 25 votes allowed by the DNC that are not included in the candidates’ totals!

This does not favor Clinton (what a surprise!), because Dean seats who he wants to seat, and knowing Dean and Donna Brazile, can you guess who those 25 DNC votes are pre-set to go to?

So, as you can see, Donna Brazile deliberately gave the public misleading information, and she should be called on it — which we are doing right now.

Transparency would be nice, Governor Dean, although that does seem like too much to ask of you these days! We would like to think we are at least still living in a partial  Democracy, so stacking the deck is not appreciated!

Brazile’s misinformation doesn’t stop there though. She left out an important part. There’s the Florida and Michigan “problem,” also known in real democracies as disenfranchisement. Some quick math tells us that Florida and Michigan delegate counts would provide roughly an additional 16 to 18 votes on the Credentials Committee. However, this won’t happen, thanks to Senator Obama who decided against “allowing” the people of both states to re-vote.

In short, Senator Obama, with the collusive help of Howard Dean, has cleverly set himself up for his own win by disenfranchising those pesky Florida and Michigan voters. The Fix Is In.

And we thought we were living in a democracy!

  • Fleaflicker

We will demonstrate quite clearly who abolished democracy when November comes. I really can’t stand Donna Brazile. She is the one that threatened to quit the party if she didn’t get her way. Well, it appears as if she and Dean and Obama and his supporters ARE leaving the party because they sure aren’t acting like Democrats and they have no respect for democracy.

SusanUnPC – You seemed surprised that the fix is in. It was obvious after Iowa that the decision was made by the party elites to inaugerate Obama and that pesky Sen. Clinton and her millions of supporters just haven’t gotten the message yet. I guess we’re just stupid and don’t do what we’re supposed to do.

The DNC better get the message that we not forget how her supporters were dismissed despite the virtual tie of this race and despite the fact that millions have yet to vote. And this Floridian will never forget or forgive the Democratic Party for its shoddy treatment of us. Never.

We have reached the sad day where the democratic process no longer matters . . . only the foreordained result matters. We now live in the Third World.

    Thanks Dean, Brazile, Obama, Pelosi . . . .

Keep up the good work SusanUnPC.

  • Shainzona

A big WARNING….listen very carefully to what Dean et al mean by “seated”. In some instances, it has meant “can come to our convention, play and party with us and vote on rule changes”. But that is NOT THE SAME THING as being allowed to vote for the Dem. Nominee.

So when you hear people suggest that they are “for seating MI and FLA”, make them define what they mean.

    Don’t fall into their trap!

  • duncan914

i used to respect both brazile and dean… this primary election has really exposed the ugly side to so many of our “leaders” in the democratic party. in so many ways, they are just as bad as the republicans. day by day i find myself becoming more disillusioned which is really sad considering that for 7 long years i have held out hope that the democrats would return us to a respectable form of government. now with all the ugliness from these people including pelosi, reid, dodd, richardson, kerry, kennedy, etc., i am starting to think that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Shainzona

Don’t forget to return those DNC solicitation letters back in the postage paid envelopes and pen your own special message in big black marker and let ‘em know how you feel.

  • mel

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, until you turn it out by silence, Clinton is not going to be silent, and no one else can be, there is plenty more coming down the pipes to be exposed, and giving up isn’t the thing to do!

  • Gregoryp

Fortunately we are living in a democracy and when the proper time comes we have the opportunity, no…..we have the obligation to make our voices heard. Whenever a political party refuses to conduct itself in a manner that satisfies its membership then it is time to remind them that voters have all the power in this game. If they don’t get the message then they become completely irrelevant and fade into oblivion.

As an aside I read an article today that claimed Gore would be running as an independent with Bloomberg slotted as VP. I don’t know that it was credible; however, I can imagine if this scenario actually played out with Obama as the democratic nominee then he’d actually score less votes than an independent. I really think the democratic party had a real opportunity this election to walk away with all the prizes and through sheer arrogance and corruption have gambled it all away.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

On a light note: As Donna Brazile talked, I found the look on George Will’s face simply priceless. Do you think he perhaps doesn’t hold her in high regard?

  • William

Tragically, my sense is that it has been determined by Dean, Brazile, Pelosi and whoever else is in on it, that Obama will be the nominee. These people had no intention of letting Michigan and Florida revote, because there was too much danger of Clinton gaining many delegates, and surpassing Obama in popular vote. The plan is to wait until the primaries are over, and then move enough superdelegates to Obama so that Clinton could not win even with FL and MI. At that time, the delegations can be seated, because it will mean nothing. If Clinton wants to take this to the credentials commmitte, it is stacked against here.

And ladies and gentlemen, this is our Democratic Party. A bunch of self-righteous fascists who know what’s best for the rest of us, and only need our money and votes, not our agreement. Brazile is for Obama because they’re both Black. Dean is for him because he considers himself an outsider, backed by the netroots; and has no allegiance to the core Democrats. Pelosi probably is for him because she resents Clinton’s stature, and wants to be the most important female in Washington. I don’t care who’s for him, as long as they played fair; but they have no intention of doing so. All they want is to be able to act like they are, so the lemmings will vote for Obama and downticket as well. In one fell swoop, these people will destroy the entire narrative of the Democratic Party as the Party of enfranchisement and fair play. They will forever alienate some loyal constituents, and guarantee that millions of dollars in contributions over the next decades will be lost, because many people will refuse to support this charade.

This entire election process has been a joke from the start, all set up to help Obama and hurt Clinton. Making sure that South Carolina was in an early spot. Cavalierly trying to nullify all the votes of Florida and Michigan, because Clinton was strong there, but allowing New Hampshire and South Carolina to move up their primaries without punishment. Trying to make states hold caucuses instead of primaries. Arcane delegate selection rules which apportion more delegates to African-American districts. Saying that the superdelegates should simply follow the results of the pledged delegates, even though that would completely invalidate the reason that the superdelegates were created. It’s all part of the same sorry game of fixing the election process in a way that even Bush and his henchmen didn’t equal. I don’t know what Clinton can do in the face of this rigged game, but I hope that she does everything at her disposal, including recourse to the legal process.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Great work by you, Mel! All that digging to find those pesky rules. WTG!

  • Shainzona

The candidates down-ticket will be hurt, too.

My first question now (when I see pleas for donations) is “who do they support for POTUS?” If I can’t figure out the answer, then my answer is no to sending money. My only donations are going to Clinton and they will until she is the nominee – and if she isn’t, then NO MONEY will go to any Dem.

    It’s that simple!

  • lifelong dem leaving party

dean, brazile, obama, pelosi, et al do have the power to subvert the process and proclaim obama the nominee despite the majority of democrats not wanting him. we are in all likelihood powerless to stop them from making him the nominee.

they do not have the power, however, to make him the president.

the majority of democrats also have power. we can refuse to go along. if we vote for the preordained obama, we are acquiescing to their dictatorship. i will never do so. i will vote mccain or nader or whoever i think will be most likely to ensure that obama is not elected. i will never send another dime to the democratic party. i will donate to, and vote for, mccain and anyone who opposes the aforementioned a–holes, as well as anyone who opposes an obama superdelegate.

losing this year’s election will be a small price to pay for getting our party back. and an obama victory would not be a victory anyway – it would be a travesty and an unacceptable risk for the country.

ultimately, if the dnc finds itself starved for cash, finds that their preordained nominee loses worse than mcgovern, and finds that those who participated in their hostile takeover of our party are suddenly losing their bids for reelection (picture the joy of seeing kerry and kennedy out of the senate after all these years), the party will likely come to its senses and actually represent us fairly in future years. if, and only if, that happens will i consider coming back to the fold.

  • MarkL

um, and why do you think SC’s primary was moved forward so early??
It’s rather obvious that the plan to crown Obama goes back quite a ways.

  • Nathan

The DNC fools think that somehow the right won’t expose the blatant disenfranchisement during the GE. Once even Obama supporters realize that he stole rather than won the nomination, how will they be able to see him as anything but a corrupt politician? They won’t.

The right–and the media–wil tear them a new one over this. Dean, Pelosi, Kennedy, Kerry and the others think this media love-fest will continue. Little do they bother to understand it’s never been media love, but Clinton Hate that is the key. Once Clinton is kicked out, the floodgates will open.

I still hope to vote for her (and I’m still donating whatever money I can scrap together), but this “election” is rigged.

  • fooj

Why isn’t SC being “punished” or “sanctioned” for moving their primary up?

  • William

I just read that Dean said that the only two ways that the Michigan and Florida issue would be settled is if the two candidates worked something out, or after someone was nominated. Since it is obvious that the candidates won’t work it out, since Obama would never give Clinton enough earned votes to risk his nomination, Dean is essentially saying that the two states have been effectively disenfranchised. Being able to vote after the nomination is over is something that even the fascists didn’t think of. I never thought I would see my Democratic Party do something like this. I would not vote for Obama for President if Hillary Clinton came to my house and begged me to in person. I simply cannot let this kind of totalitarianism stand.

You mean you won’t be blackmailed by them to be afraid of the Republicans or dread what will happen to the supreme court….

I won’t vote for him even if Clinton came to my home with a trailer carrying a Unity Pony.

  • alexei

Hear, hear! Donna Brazile is a “pimping” for Obama.

I am also going to be working against all Obama loving Dems who are part and parcel for this travesty.

  • bert

Thanks, mel. I needed to hear that becasue I am starting to get really depressed.

  • pm317

A struggling and chaotic democracy like India’s had the sense to reject Indira Gandhi and her party in a huge election victory after her Emergency rule I think in the early 70s (I was too little to remember much of it). If those people (majority of whom are illiterates) could realize the wrong from the right and punish the people/party responsible for it through their votes, your more sophisticated and well organized democracy must reject soundly what is happening to the Democratic party. I just heard today two of the diarists at mydd are banned. The media, even NPR has gone to the dogs. A rational and unbiased media providing the information necessary to make an informed decision is an integral part of a well functioning democracy. We are seeing this American democracy coming apart at the seams as it were now. This is very sad.

  • pm317

If Obama becomes the nominee without FL and MI being resolved, All McCain has to do is to go to FL and MI say “vote for me, the other guy never wanted your vote.”

  • bert

    “losing this year’s election
will be a smal price to pay
    for getting our party back”

I have a question about this. Should Obama be the nominee and lose big, (as he will only question being how big) will Dean, et al. be forced to resign? How can common sense Democrats take back the Party? Would the time be after a huge defeat? And then how would/could we do it? Could Clinton strp in then and get some decent honest folks into the Party? Does anyone have any thoughts about this or any answers? What happened after McGoverns defeat in 72?

  • rjj

Brazile, who has become esteemic, probably did not like to be reminded of 2000.

Without her guidance the election might not have been that close.

  • miriam

The Democratic party has a great deal to answer for…but it won’t. Hasn’t anyone wondered why Pelosi made such a point of saying “Impeachment is off the table”? The one way the Democrats might rein in Bush and hold this administration accountable was the Constitution’s Impeachment clause. And then the Dems proceeded to rubberstamp the most unconstitutional of Bush’s “decrees.”

I’ve been a registered Democrat for 46 years, but the party has become little more than Republican-lite. Too many members of congress, whom we elected, are feeding from the same lobby-corrupted trough as the Republicans. I think the only thing we can do is to register as Independents and stop supporting/funding this party.

  • vee

SC is the reason, I believe, that the nuclear option was taken with Fl and MI. The outcome of SC was predictable and meant to showcase Obama’s win. If Fl and MI had been allowed to have delegates, the primaries there would have diluted SC’s influence.

  • SJ

Dean and Brazile want to be the first to pat themselves on their backs and prove to the world that this all embracing democrat party has gained the distinctive credit that they were the first party in US history to have a black man nominated as the candidate for president.

They don’t care if that nominee is as dumb as a door knob, or if he has no experience, neither do they care if he can do the job or not. They are not interested in his past or any rumors of his past, all they want to prove is what they can achieve before the Republican party.

So to them Hillary right now is a hindrance to their names being written in the US history books. They care not what the vast population of Democrat voters may want, they care not about what Florida or Michigan may want, and the sure as hell don’t want Hillary making it any harder for them in this respect.

Their personal ambitions is to nominate the first black man for president, the fix is in this is what they want to achieve so in years to come generations can say how accommodating they were to this idea as compared to anyone else. We are reminded daily of how blacks will feel if this does not happen, but no one speaks about how other feel if Hillary is pushed out or not given a fair shake in this, all they are concerned about is their own personal recognition in all this.

As for people like Brazile its despicable for the Clintons has done so much to embrace them and have them included into high office that they now turn around and be so ungrateful, loyalty and friendship seems to take the back burner when ethnicity comes to the forefront.

I have a vote and I will never forget this election and people like Dean and Brazile so they can do what they want once Obama gets the nod I will vote for McCain and support the Republican party to the very end.

  • lifelong dem leaving party

sj, actually i think the history thing is the saddest part of all of this. when we have the first african american president, there will be much attention paid in future history books and our descendants will be taught all about it. what a shame that they will be reading about a crooked, lying, devious, race-baiting, untalented, unprepared, incompetent, person who cheated his way into the office and set racial relations in the country back for decades. that is not the kind of history we should be making.

  • GOPmurderedconscience

I don’t watch any of these shows anymore and now I understand why.

Donna Brazile’s performance in this little segment alone is sooo puke inducing. I had to control myself in order not to smash things.

The lies she tells anytime she opens her mouth here are just unbearable.

These people have decided to destroy the Democratic party and many in the “progressive” bloggosphere are playing along because they think it helps “The Chosen One”

I think I am going to bed.

  • jimbo

    To Dean and Obama,

I will not vote in the presidential election if Michigan and Florida are denied. If Michigan and Florida are enabled, then I will vote for the Democratic nominee, whomever it is. Seems so simple, choose your poison. Assholes.

  • ScottVA

I’ve said all along that I will continue to support my candidate Hillary Clinton and I am raising money for her on a regular basis since I’ve maxed out my own donation.

I’ve stopped fundraising for the DNC and I hope they go bankrupt! Money problems are already surfacing there because of the lack of donations.

I agree if anyone get’s literature from the DNC send it back in their envelope it costs them money this way!

It’s time for a new party that cares about moderate and conservative Democrats of this Party! I’m tired of this Party being run by left wing liberals who chose their candidate, ram it down our throats and expect us to vote for them… as if we have no other choice!

The biggest thing we can do as supporters is keep donating and raising money for Hillary to keep her in the race! As well as keep connecting with one another in these blogs and being outspoken about our own views in public!

Personally, I think that as long as she can keep him in the race before the primaries end…that something sneaky is going to come out, about Mr. Obama, in this Tony Rezko trial going on in Chicago right now! It’s only day two today since the trial restarted and before the end of the day conversations about Mr. Obamas old law firm boss is starting to come into the conversations! If any of you have an interest in the trial this website is great for updating daily events.

    http://www.rezkowatch.blogspot.com

IN ANY CASE AND I WILL REPEAT THIS FOR THE DNC, DEAN AND WHOMEVER… I PLAN TO SUPPORT JOHN McCAIN THIS FALL IF THEY PUSH MR. OBAMA AS THE NOMINEE… The ONLY way I would consider voting for the Democratic ticket is if Hillary Clinton is on top of the ticket! If they think they can throw Hillary a bone as VP to get her supporters… they’ve another thing coming if it will change my mind! I even emailed Hillary’s campaign HQ and reinterated as much! I know I’m not alone in my feelings on this and I really think we need to send a message to the DNC by NOT JUST sitting out the election but voting for Mr. McCain. I see McCain as the lesser of two evils when pitted against Obama! Personally, I can wait out the 4 years!

  • http://! flyarm

ohhh the repigs are already hard at work here in Fla..understand this, many dems love the new governor Charlie Crist..he will bring the votes to McCain with all the help of Dean and Brazile and Obama, with very little effort!!

I saw the same thing. Did bring a little smile to my face I must say.

That is it, isn’t it. That is how I feel when the democrats in Congress ignore our calls and emails on issue after issue (or stage a fake filibuster).
Dean and Brazille are running the DNC with the same deaf ear and feelings of entitlement that our Congress people are running our Congress. What an eye opener this primary has been.

They’ve had good lives, haven’t they – at our expense. And we even donated money to them. We work our hearts out so that they can “go up to Washington” and “get things done” then repeat those words and laugh when they get there.

Makes me think of Martin Luther. A reverent pious monk who loved God above all else, and the height of his ambition was to go to Rome and stand there in the pure heart of his beloved Christianity. We all know how that turned out.

  • Fredster

Dean and Brazile may get the first black nominated for the Presidency, but will they get him elected? I don’t think so. And then they will say that America wasn’t enlightened enough or educated enough to move beyond race. How nice for them. But Johnny Mac is gonna be the one sitting in the Oval Office for four years.

Lordy I wish we could get a photo of B.O. bowling, John Kerry “hunting” and Dukakis in that tank and put ‘em all together. Hilarious!

  • reality based

To the pessimistic posters on this thread, I want to say- don’t underestimate what may happen at the convention. We haven’t seen a convention resolve a political impasse in many years but it can happen. We are going to hear some pretty impassioned calls for counting every vote which will tear gaping holes in the Obama ranks. They will respond with dragooning Chicago style on their delegations which will not look good on TV. There are people that know how to operate in conventions and hopefully Hillary will have them at her side. God bless America!

  • Northwest rain

There is no way that Obama will win in Nov.

Obama is the most unqualified person to run for office in generations. And no he is not a great orator — he is simply adequate at reading the words of other people in a teleprompter.

I still want to know exactly WHEN Donna B. learned that Obama went to a racist church? Did she know about Rev. Wright — when did she know?

Did Dean and Donna B. run a background check on Obama — if so when?

It does seem that Dean and gang seem to think that the democrats — the core democrats — Hillary’s democratic voters will meekly vote for anyone with a big D next to their name. They think that no one will see how they have manipulated the process — the system to favor the “precious”.

Rev. Wright’s racist church isn’t going over very well with core democrats.

Obama, throw grandma under the bus, is also a misogynist but then what the hell — women are “fair game”.

I could care less WHAT color Obama thinks he is — what’s most important is he prepare to BE the President and the answer is, NO!

Obama is a person with virtually no understanding of the military — even bush did his play time in the Texas Air National Guard. Our military deserves someone prepared to BE the Commander in Chief.

The core democrats are sending a message with our votes — Ohio was a major message to the democratic leadership but Dr. Dean is too full of his own self importance to listen.

The caucuses are the biggest farce.

If the PRIMARY votes from FL and MI are tossed out then ALL the votes from the caucus states should be thrown out!

And Donna B. is a racist if the ONLY reason she is endorsing Obama is because he is black.

  • glennmcgahhee

It s the downticket Dems that will suffer . I hope they realize this. I can understand some of my Republican friend’s disdain for my party now.

  • kenoshaMarge

The DNC Fools and the Democratic Party leadership are convinced that once they have anointed Obama as the nominee all us little pointy-headed libs will get in line to defeat the “evil” Republicans.

They are unwilling or unable to understand that at this point they are perceived as the “evil” by a good share of their party.

They may well get their way and crown Obama. And in so doing they will, IMO, make a John McCain presidency inevitable.

If Democrats allow this travesty by their party then we shouldn’t bother to worry about primary elections anymore. Let’s just allow the media and the DNC to tell us who our nominee is. It would save a lot of money and eliminate a lot of bullshit.

Let the Republicans have their silly primary. Because while it was apparent that the Republican Leadership, Right Blogosphere and the RNC didn’t want John McCain as their candidate they let the voters decide. See how evil they are? They just did that to make the Democrats look bad. (As if they needed any help.)

  • NagNancy

The only interesting thing about Donna Brazile is that little wave thing she’s got going there with her hair. She should get a little barrette with a tiny little surferdude. Is that OT? :)

Donna Brazile has no problem with spreading false information. Why do they think no one will call them on this? Great job, Susan, Mel, Uppity Woman and CS.
The credentials committee, if it goes that far, will be stacked against us. The fix is in. All for a candidate that is fatally flawed. Let’s hope it’s also Howard’s End.

The crazier things get, the more crass Howard Dean sounds…

“Oh, it’ll be over long before the convention… or else! SHUT UP… I am the King of the Democrats!!”

OK, I paraphrased him, so sue me.

    I just emailed Molly Barker
dncmemberservices@dnc.org to have my my name removed rom their rolls.

I can’t see how I could ever vote for a half baked male candidate after seeing the most prepared (female) candidate in history told to step aside for *Him*. And I thought sexism was so behind us.

The Democratic Party may need to crash and burn to
be able to rebuild itself upon real democratic principles.

  • simon

Is there anyway Fl and MI can file suit against Dean, and the DNC, requesting it be recognized as part of the electoral process, or something of the sort?

  • NagNancy

“Let the Republicans have their silly primary. Because while it was apparent that the Republican Leadership, Right Blogosphere and the RNC didn’t want John McCain as their candidate they let the voters decide.”

I never thought of it that way before, Marge. If Obama is the nominee because Mi and Fl are disenfranchised, how can anyone be blamed for defecting? It’s a real slap in the face to realize that the Republicans may have the high ground on democratic processes.

We all know that if you allow the candidates to decide if and how Mi and Fl are seated, Obama will never allow that to happen. Where in those precious rules does it say that voters can be disenfranchised for the political gain of one candidate over another? Our priorities are backwards as a party.

  • simon

I just heard today two of the diarists at mydd are banned. The media, even NPR has gone to the dogs

That’s too bad, it’s sort of like book burning as opposed to pest killing, myDD following the example of K$$.

Just because someone says they’re counting cards doesn’t mean they count cards well, let the trolls fall where they may.

This site has done a pretty good job at calling out the garbage, recognizing propaganda sophistry, in part because Susan and Larry, (despite the the troll complaints in email),let us speak up.

Of course, diaries can’t be posted at will, here, but I saw no real problems with the posters banned at MYDD.

It won’t help them, in the long run.

I don’t really feel Dean and crew gives a hoot about if Obama can win a GE or not all they are concerned about is the fact that no one will be able to point their fingers at them and say they were not for racial unity.

Maybe they are hoping that enough white guilt will step in and people will be swayed once Obama gets the nomination. I have no problem with a black president but I just do not in my heart feel that he is a better candidate than Hillary.

The more I examine Obama I don’t like what I see, I don’t buy into these unanswered checked past, his Muslim connections, his Rezko and Wright associations, his flip flopping and his sudden rise in the center of politics. To me these are a lot more troubling factors than weather if Hillary lied about her trip to Bosnia or not, yet the Bosnia trip seems to have taken precedent over all of Obama’s unknowns.

Then we have the cry that the Clinton’s feel they have the right to the presidency, but on the other hand blacks feel that they must have a black president now, regardless of all the unanswered questions about Obama. They act as if he has to be accepted and most of the the black delegates have throw their support on his side not out of what is best for this country but for the main reason that he is black, I don’t feel that is right as a voter I expect more than that if you want me to support a candidate.

I cannot give Obama my vote just because he is a democrat, am just not comfortable with voting for him, and no matter how I have tired to look beyond all that I have seen 1 + 1 still does not give me 2. I don’t know if the DNC screens their candidates, seems like anyone can just get up one morning and say am running for president, but it is amazing that Obama with so much unanswered baggage is even on a democrat ticket.

I wonder what hapened to “the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party”. Damn sure gone.

  • Blue State Girl

Transparency would be nice, Governor Dean, although that does seem like too much to ask of you these days! We would like to think we are at least still living in a partial Democracy, so stacking the deck is not appreciated!

And groundless accusations are not appreciated. This whole post is based on comments by Donna Brazile, who is obviously partial to Obama so nothing she says is trustworthy, and assumptions about Howard Dean that are based on second hand and third hand “analyses.”

This does not favor Clinton (what a surprise!), because Dean seats who he wants to seat, and knowing Dean and Donna Brazile, can you guess who those 25 DNC votes are pre-set to go to?

With prescience like that, I think you should immediately head to Vegas and play blackjack. You don’t want those mindreading skills to go to waste.

Here is the list of the 25 appointees. Rather than assume that those 25 are loyal to Obama or Clinton, I think you’ll find a mix of Obama and Clinton supporters along with people loyal to Dean. Some Googling should tell you that.

Before anyone blows a gasket because someone dares to defend Howard Dean, here’s a clip from today’s LA Times:

Asked about Hillary Rodham Clinton’s suggestion that superdelegates should exercise independent judgment and not feel bound by the standings after June 3 — the day the nominating season ends — Dean replied: “That’s what the rules say, and I enforce the rules.”

He also said superdelegates were free to weigh the disputed primary results in Florida and Michigan, two states that New York Sen. Clinton carried in the absence of campaigning by rival Barack Obama. The two campaigns have spent weeks wrangling over a plan that would seat delegates from those states, which voted earlier than the party allowed.

Although his comments amounted to a restatement of party rules, Dean’s stance undercut an argument pressed by Illinois Sen. Obama and his backers. They have said the candidate who has the most pledged delegates should automatically win the support of any uncommitted superdelegates after the primary balloting ends.

Adam Nagourney, no friend to Democrats, has this in today’s NY Times:

Some Democrats said Mr. Dean was wise to stand back in the presidential race, saying that nothing could be done until tensions between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama were resolved.

“I honestly think it’s laying too much at his door, laying too much on his plate,” said Steve Grossman, a former chairman of the national party and a prominent supporter and friend of Mr. Dean. “He truly only has limited impact on this despite people’s sense that a party chair can wave a magic wand and make it happen. I know other people will disagree with that.”

“As a former chair, I have to acknowledge that I don’t think any former chair has in my memory gone through a period of time that is as complex as this,” Mr. Grossman said. “Howard has been scrupulously nonpartisan in terms of all his activities in dealing with this campaign.”

Frustration with the perceived lack of progress is one thing. But as a longtime observer of Howard Dean, I can say definitively that whatever he’s doing will not be done publicly.

Obama has made a strategic mistake – speculatio praecox (pace Hope®). He’s made his presidential move too early in his career. Enthusiasm is ephemeral. When he comes back in 2012 most of the faddists will yawn and say, eeeeeuuuwwww, he’s soooo last season!! Cult loyalists will have little clout. And they don’t run GE losers twice.

This assumes economic adversity does not make us smarter, more practical, less shallow. Not that this guy will necessarily appeal to a sadder-but-wiser deme.

The only interesting thing about Donna Brazile is that little wave thing she’s got going there with her hair. She should get a little barrette with a tiny little surferdude. Is that OT?

Not if your the tiny little surfer dude.

All he thinks of is himself.

I have a question about this. Should Obama be the nominee and lose big, (as he will only question being how big) will Dean, et al. be forced to resign? How can common sense Democrats take back the Party?

You have basically boiled this down correctly – Even if Obama is the nominee, Dems will win big in the Senate/Congress – to many Repub. retiring. I still think Obama gives McCain a run for his money, if he loses it will still be close. BUT should he win, the Clintons will not be the face of the Dem. Party anymore. That’s what the contest is all about. Who will control the Democratic Party going forward.

Have any, ANY of the democratic leadership said……”Yes, the voters of Florida and Michigan must have their votes counted”! NO! They worry about offending the candidates, the hell with us voters.

Thousands of voters have been disenfranchised because Howard Dean (As he stated in an interview March 5th on National Public Radio) the DNC wanted S.C. to vote before Florida so African Americans would be in a position to carry more weight in choosing a candidate.

Should 11% of our population have that power? Is this democratic?

Why should the candidates have a say in settling the Fla./Mich. fiasco? The Obama campaign has already proven they will do anything to win, there is no way Obama will agree to have Florida/Michigan votes counted.

Dean and Brazile should apologize to voters in Florida/Mich. and admit….WE HAVE SCREWED THIS UP…and count the votes.

We are 74 yrs. lifelong democrats, totally disgusted with dem. leadership. This primary has exposed the corrupted democratic party system of choosing a nominee and the careless attitude leadership has towards voters.

  • ginaswo

we need a visibility in DC in front of DNC HQ to show we arent going along with this disenfranchisement

So does this mean we write off Hillary’s chances of getting the nomination? Or do we still fight for her? In my book this is the most crucial action we can take for the future of our country. So much is at stake here. Hillary is the ONLY candidate that will be able to addreess and solve our problems.

  • pm317

You know whatever we may think of republicans, they are better organized and they will do what is necessary to win — in the current scenario, they would have seen Clinton as a winning candidate and would have supported her and told the neophyte to wait 8 more years. Their primary is much simpler with winner take all and under that system, Clinton would have already won the primary. Something else tells me that they would have also treated her with more respect.

Don’t you get it yet? This is the “new” Democratic Party, the one George Soros says he “bought.” This Democratic Party wants to realign, they want to build a new coalition that will not include Clinton Democrats. Oh they lecture us on Unity and how we have to be loyal and vote for their Puppet President, but they don’t want real democrats in their organization. That’s why Obie is out pandering to the college kids and the Republicans. The Party elite think they can do without the Clinton people if they get enough youth and disaffected Republicans. Nancy Pelosi: we can’t risk losing the new, exciting YOUNG voters Obama is bringing to the Party, and her comment on one of the morning talk shows where she said the Democratic leaders have to nominate Obama or the African Americans will revolt, she said they are the “most loyal members of the Democratic Party,” if they are disappointed the Party” will be ruptured.” So, the rest of us are just chaff.

I’ve Alway’s Thought That Michigan,& Florida Were The Work Of The DNC,& Howard Dean,Why Did Dean And Brazile Work So Hard To Make Sure That Those Two States Were Stripped Of All Their Delegates.

South Carolina,& New Hamshire Moved Their Primary’s Up To No Admonishment,And I Think That Were Done Because After Iowa It Were Common Knowledge That Obama Were Expected To Win The Other Three Early Primary States. But It Did Not Turn Out The Way Obama And His People Had Anticipated.

So Mr Dean,& Mrs Brazile Godzilla,Along With The DNC,Nancy Pelosi And A Few Other Backstabbing Coward’s Who Has Not Shown Thier Disloyalty Prematurely.Their Doing It Now One,& Two At A Time Haven’t Anyone Noticed,Hilliary Is Not Being Courted By Anymore Superdelegates.

Their All Slowly Giving Their Support To Barry Hussein Osama Barack Obama,So By The Time They Reach The DNC In August It Will Be Already Decided.Mr Dean Did Not Have To Strip Those Two States Of All Their Delegetes,Even The Republican’s Came Up With A Workable Solution.

But That Were His,Godzilla,That Witch Pelosi,& Of Course The Flunkie Barry That Were Chosen By These People To Rid The Party Of Senator Clinton Once And For All.These People Do,& Have Hated Hilliary For Some Long Year’s,And They Know If She Get’s Elected,Their Game Plan Is History……..The Jury Is Still Out On That One So Let’s See How It Play’s Out.

Senator Clinton Were Way Ahead In The Michigan,& The Floridian Poll’s By Double Digit % And They Knew It Were An Unsurmountable Lead For Obama To Overcome So Tha’s When Michigan,& Florida Played Right Into Their Deceit,& Dillusion’s.

These People That I Just Mentioned Hates Hilliary Because Like The Other’s She Won’t Kiss Their Collective Asses. So She Has Had A Bull’s Eye On Her Since Leaving Her Post As First lady Year’s Ago.They Also Have Allowed Obama,& His Supporter’s To Bully,& Strongarm These Undemocratic Caucauses At Their Own Discretion With No Prejudice.

Mr Obama Is Byfar The Worst Candidate To Run For The Democratic Nomination Since John Kerry,& Howard Dean,And The Main Reason They Don,t Want Senator Clinton To Win This Race.1Ted Kennady–Lost His Presidential Attempt..2.John Kerry–Lost His Presidential Attempt….3.Howard Dean–Lost His Presidential Attempt…4.Donna Brazile– Lost Her Attempt To Put Al Gore In The Whitehouse,Because Of Incompentance….5.Bill Richardson–Lost His Presidential Attempt……6.Chris Dodd–Lost His Presidential Attempt,And Finally We Come To Nancy Pelosi’s Hate For Senator Clinton,She Refuses To Support Pelosi On Issues Of Her Choice So If She Can’t Manipulate Senator Clinton Like She Is Obviously Doing To Mr Obama.

This Has Been Going On For Over 15 Year’s,Senator Clinton Has Been Singlehandley Fighting These Backstabber’s For Almost Two Decades. Not Only The Rightwing,But The Leftwingnut’s,The Liberal,s,The Progressives Of Her Own Party,Not To Mention The Attacks From The Republican,s.

She Is Still Standing…….Someone Please Give Me An Example Of Who Would Be A Better CIC Than President Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Actually, of you read the article entitled “Dem Elite Work to End Primaries Early” it says right in it that Hillary won’t give up because she knows what’s going down with the Party elite. She and Bill honestly believe Barack Obama cannot be trusted to be president, he isn’t competent enough. They are going to fight on.

I think the only thing we can do is to register as Independents and stop supporting/funding this party.

I was a registered Democrat for 27 years, but that’s what I did last spring, when it became clear that the feckless, careerist Democrats in Congress no longer represent me.

  • Kathy

I haven’t missed much in this election. Obama lost me when Jesse Jackson, Jr. got on television and called Bill Clinton a racist because he said Obama’s Iraq story was a fairytale.

I knew then it was all over for this election. That was when the UGLY started and wasn’t going to stop. Obama is not the one.

I don’t have white guilt, and I paid my dues to AAs during the 60s, 70s and 80s. When AA educated professionals start calling former presidents and others “racist,” you might as well wrap it up. We are going to have to wait for a more enlightened, tolerant AA to come along. Maybe someone from the ranks of the middle class or even the projects, who had to pull himself up, work his way through college, pay his student loans,
maybe struggle a little so that he knows how the majority of people (both AA and white) survive in this country.

There’s nothing wrong with being middle class. We are the best people in the world. We give to all and support all. This country would come to a stand still if we stopped working for one day. We have integrity, patriotism, character, and we know a loser when we see one.

GO HILLARY! Don’t any of you give up the fight. If she can go to the end, so can we.

That’s correct and I heard one of the talking heads say that exact thing today. It must have been on FOX because CNN and MSHBN would never point out that distinction.

After they played the clip of Howard saying the FL and MI delegates would be “seated” the talking head explained that that DID NOT mean the votes would be counted and THAT is the big question looming out there. If Howard Dean has already stacked the credentials committee with Brazile’s people, then we KNOW the MI and and FL votes will not be counted…..

    this is total horse hockey!

ohb and before the ink was dry on the pledge Oba ma signed in Sept 2007..Obama broke the rules the very next day and promised to seat the Fla delegates!..oh and he did a presser as well..against his pledge..

no other candidate broke Deans frigging rules in Fla..

oh and by the way ..why wasn’t Sputh carolina held to the same rules as Florida when their republican legislature moved up their primary..oh i know the fucking rules..only counted for Florida and Michigan!!

Obama Vows To ‘Do What’s Right’

By WILLIAM MARCH and ELAINE SILVESTRINI The Tampa Tribune

    Published: September 30, 2007

Fundraising Totals | Primary States | Where They Stand

TAMPA – Barack Obama hinted during a Tampa fundraiser Sunday that if he’s the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, he’ll seat a Florida delegation at the party’s national convention, despite national party sanctions prohibiting it.

Obama also appeared to violate a pledge he and the other leading candidates took by holding a brief news conference outside the fundraiser. That was less than a day after the pledge took effect Saturday, and Obama is the first Democratic presidential candidate to visit Florida since then.

Obama and others have pledged not to campaign in Florida until the Jan. 29 primary except for fundraising, which is what he was doing in Tampa.

But after the fundraiser at the Hyde Park home of Tom and Linda Scarritt, Obama crossed the street to take half a dozen questions from reporters waiting there.

The pledge covers anything referred to in Democratic National Committee rules as “campaigning,” and those include “holding news conferences.”

Obama seemed unaware the pledge he signed prohibits news conferences. Asked whether he was violating it, he said, “I was just doing you guys a favor. … If that’s the case, then we won’t do it again.”
