When “WTF” Means What the Fox!

This is a joint piece with DC MEDIA GIRL.  We first met while being interviewed by Robert Greenwald for his documentary, OUTFOXED.  DC Media Girl and I had worked in different capacities at the Fox News Channel–she was a producer and I was “news analyst.”  We came out of the closet and spoke candidly about our respective experiences in watching Fox twist the news and propagandize on behalf of the Bush Administration.  We have been and remain tough critics of Fox and neither of us would be welcomed at their broadcast studio at 400 North Capitol.  Which is why we are both stunned to be writing the following:

When it comes to election coverage of the presidential contest between Senator Clinton and Senator Obama, Fox News is more “fair and balanced” than either MSNBC or CNN.  Damn!  How did that happen?

DC Media Girl notes: How many surprises are left in this election?  Like Alice, we’ve gone through the looking glass and found ourselves discombobulated.  Like the Red Queen, who advocated verdict first and trial later, we now have Democratic “leaders”  who want to get the nomination out of the way before figuring out a way for the voters in Florida and Michigan to have the their voices heard.  We have the party that was publicly and royally screwed out of an election victory in 2000, whose mantra was “count all the votes”, telling voters of that same state to go fuck itself. We have a loudmouth documentary film producer who made a fortune bringing the injustices of said robbery in 2000 to light now keeping his very big mouth shut despite the fact that this fresh 2008 outrage affects his home state.  We have party leaders demanding the withdrawal of a viable candidate even before reaching the halfway mark in the voting.  We have usually reasonable people giving a candidate’s militant preacher a pass because yes, he may be a bit nutty, but “he’s done good things for the community” (hey, the Nation of Islam does quite a bit of outreach in the prisons, but I don’t see anyone handing Louis Farrakhan a Nobel Peace Prize. At least not yet).

So given all these oddities, is it so strange to realize that the most “fair and balanced” coverage of Election 2008 has been emanating from the Murdoch Death Star, a.k.a. Fox News Channel?

Larry Johnson:

Want proof?  Read what Pennsylvania Governor Rendell had to say on the matter to Time’s Karen Tumulty:

In a recent appearance on Fox News—not exactly considered friendly territory for the Democrats—he congratulated the network for having done “the fairest job [and] remained the most objective of all the cable networks.” In an interview with me, the governor was again in media-critic mode. “It took Saturday Night Live to bring some fairness to this election,” Rendell said, referring to the show’s now famous skit lampooning the media’s crush on Obama. “It’s stunning. Does Keith Olbermann get checks from the Obama campaign?”

The sycophancy of the media is fully exposed when the “Murdoch Death Star” (I love DC Media Girl’s phrase) is delivering the most balanced election coverage.  As one of the people who called for the Democrats to not participate in a televised debate hosted by Fox last year let me (Larry Johnson) state for the record–I was wrong.  W*T*F, over.

I am glad I am not alone. I was beginning to scare me. I watch FOX news. Before this primary I don’t recall ever watching FOX. I could barely stand to pass by that channel with the remote. Now I watch them. WTF is right.

    • ginaswo

moi aussi! I felt I had gone to the Dark Side, but I couldnt get an even handed account of the Dem candidates anywhere else.

    • blobert

Agreed, I found myself thinking Bill O’Reilly was a good guy,. and my ex-idol Olbermann was a nutcase.

I am thinking Fox might value our viewership. Bill O might take great pleasure in upping his ratings with HRC supporters.
Keith O. didn’t care if he lost us as he smeared our candidate.
Won’t KO be in for a shock after the primaries when his ratings go down the toilet as the Republicans drop him like a dead rat!

      • S. Markom

People believe in the media that is agreeing with them. MSNBC has ALWAYS been the broadcast equivalent of Daily Kos. Chris Matthews is a former political operative (not a journalist). The same with Joe Scarborough. Keith Olbermann is neither. He is an ex-ESPN broadcaster who simply took his sophomoric act to politics and didn’t bother to learn anything in his new arena.

Fox hs always been somewhat “fair and balanced.” But it has become far more balanced over time and clearly is the only legitimate news organization on broadcast anymore.

I even heard Mike Barnacle lauding over Bill O’Reilly.

    • A Democrat

Rupert Murdoch knows you better than you know yourself. If you wanted journalism you could find it but let’s face it, you don’t want journalism. You want crack and that’s what Murdoch sells.

      • chris

and you are the journalism expert here?
You should really do your homework here chumpy. You want Crack and your Crack is Obama. You are getting off your party vapors.

I’m not worried about your dilemma though. Time will show where you stand. You indicate that you believe in news when it suits you.

        • A Democrat

You are getting off your party vapors.

Sounds like you’re a Republican dead ender so there’s a certain logic to your preference for Fox.

  • JoeySky

I don’t care if the facts come from the right wing media. If they report issues that need to be raised, I will listen to them. And yes, Fox is the fairest in all the cable news network. CNN is now junk. Only Lou Dobb still remembers the responsibility of a journalist.

    • jwrjr

Facts are facts, no matter where they come from. If Fox is the most fair news reporter, then the others should be more than just ashamed.

      • Kevin

and what of who came up with those “facts”?

        • chris

Kevin, you are implying that people should commit an intellectually fraudulent thinking.

          You should learn about:
          “Poisoning the Well” fallacy

Nizkor archive on fallacies displays this well:

          Description of Poisoning the Well
This sort of “reasoning” involves trying to discredit what a person might later claim by presenting unfavorable information (be it true or false) about the person. This “argument” has the following form:

Unfavorable information (be it true or false) about person A is presented.
Therefore any claims person A makes will be false.
This sort of “reasoning” is obviously fallacious. The person making such an attack is hoping that the unfavorable information will bias listeners against the person in question and hence that they will reject any claims he might make. However, merely presenting unfavorable information about a person (even if it is true) hardly counts as evidence against the claims he/she might make. This is especially clear when Poisoning the Well is looked at as a form of ad Homimem in which the attack is made prior to the person even making the claim or claims. The following example clearly shows that this sort of “reasoning” is quite poor.

          Before Class:
Bill: “Boy, that professor is a real jerk. I think he is some sort of eurocentric fascist.”
          Jill: “Yeah.”

          During Class:
Prof. Jones: “…and so we see that there was never any ‘Golden Age of Matriarchy’ in 1895 in America.”

          After Class:
          Bill: “See what I mean?”
Jill: “Yeah. There must have been a Golden Age of Matriarchy, since that jerk said there wasn’t.”

          Examples of Poisoning the Well

          “Don’t listen to him, he’s a scoundrel.”

“Before turning the floor over to my opponent, I ask you to remember that those who oppose my plans do not have the best wishes of the university at heart.”

You are told, prior to meeting him, that your friend’s boyfriend is a decadent wastrel. When you meet him, everything you hear him say is tainted.

          • Kevin

poppycock, I questioned the nuetrality of the source and nothing more. What, you agree that Fox is unbiased, or more importantly the source of the quote that annointed Fox thusly is unbiased?

            • Rob Gard

Fox is no friend of the Democratic Party, and their management, if not also their on-air “talent”, favor Republican politics and politicians. FOX is even-handed with the two Democratic candidates, and does not favor one over the other; attacking or defending both, when they see the grounds to do so. CNN and MSNBC do actually show a clear preference between the Democratic candidates, and report on every Obama talking point against Hillary, but generally refuse to report anything negative against Obama. When they (CNN and MSNBC) do any form of negative reporting against Hillary, the story is repeated several times an hour, and often for days on end. Whwn there is negative reporting on Obama, CNN and MSNBC generally have a group of Obama supporting “pundits” on the scene to explain away or spin any negative news, and they do not go out of their way to keep the stories alive, unless there are new significant developments. For the most part, they fail entirely to report on any misstatements, inconsistencies, or outright lies from Obama, and folks like Olbermann and Matthews simply make shit up. When documentation surfaces that discredits the stories told by Olbermann or Matthews, they don’t make corrections, but instead keep telling the same lies as if no one will ever notice. The irony in this is that Olbermann used to be one of the news/talk show hosts that I respected because he was quick to go on the air and apologize for any errors, no matter how insignificant, and now he tells whoppers with a smarmy straight face like the candidate he so clearly adores.

    • simon

And yes, Fox is the fairest in all the cable news network.

I have a family member going to Iraq, any day now, and I try my best to keep things in perspective, remembering.

Fox is as complicit as the rest of them in this mess.

When Bush and Cheney were routinely trashing the Constitution, or when some sort of problem lingered, it was my impression the White House would call Roger Ailes, ahem, and, um, problem solved.

MSNBC would do the same for Obama, though, and I don’t favorably view network propaganda outlets, v journalism, as the airwaves are supposed to be owned by the people, not GE, or some other corporate mediocrity.

      Not at all.

I am glad Clinton has at least one outlet that is somewhat balanced.

I would also say, given the Wall Street head, don’t expect to see any changes in Clinton coverage, they’re playing “roller coaster” one minute up and optimistic, the next, Swoosh! let down, it’s an ops, aimed at Clinton supporters, IMO. I smell a dirty trick, a bait and switch, somewhere in the herb garden. The editors and owners feel they are king makers, no matter the thickness of their heads, and their minds are set on Obama, for the moment, with the expectation McCain will win in November.

      But everyone knows, anyway.

You know, Pat Buchanan says something, and I give him a little bit more repsect than Roger Ailes.

      You know what I mean?

completely agree re cnn. now donna brazile is sending extremely rude email replies to hillary supporters, saying things like she puts our emails “in a special folder called ‘tales from the gutter’” – incredible!!! (for more examples, check out the comments to savagepolitics’ pedigree at 3:00 am article).

then, of course, there’s chris, i get a tingly feeling up my leg for obama, matthews.

i stopped watching nbc – russert the pig, msnbc, and cnn completely in mid-february. there are other sources for news. and they don’t provide news anyway, just obama propaganda.

orwell had it right, just got the year wrong.

    • Linda

oh, Chris and his “thill up his leg”….me, I’m wondering where Keithie is getting his thrill. So sad.

      • Linda

        s/b thrill

        • kenoshaMarge

Isn’t Keith getting his “thrill” from his girl friend who is 30 years younger or something like that? None of my business but a whole lot of Left Blogostan made fun of Fred Thompson for that if I recall. Double standards left and right.

  • CoYoungDem

Forget CNN, they are nothing compared to MSNBC. The blantant disrepect against both President and Senator Clinton, combined with rampant sexism is so infuriating, I will never watch again. The only person they have that I still hold some respect for is Dan Abrams – but even his show is becoming Obama-centric these days… It’s enough to make a girl boycott indefinately… Also, why is Greta Van Sustren the only female talking head with her own show on primetime??

  • CognitiveDissonance

Yes, a few weeks ago, I switched over to Fox News in disgust. I had long ago stopped watching MSNBC. Then CNN began going more and more to the dark side (with the exception of Lou Dobbs). On the evening of the March 4th elections, I disgustedly switched over to Fox because I couldn’t stomach the vile comments being made on CNN about Clinton. Or their continuing assertion, even as she was winning, that she should drop out.

I’ve been horrified over the past 8 years at the media’s morphing into a shameless propaganda machine on the behalf of Bush. But this election year, they’ve actually gotten even worse. There are very few professionals left anywhere. They have officially thrown out all pretense of objectivity and have become shameless shills. It has been just as bad on most of the lefty blogs. Thank God for No Quarter, Taylor Marsh, The Left Coaster, Talk Left, and a few others.

  • Salo

people do not change they are revealed.

it takes a while to know what they are.

Although what Fox is doing is being unfair to both of the dems. It just looks fair because we don’t know what the difference might look like because Clinton has been unfairly hounded by a mad stupid press corps.

    • chris

      Salo, you are ignorant then.

People DO CHANGE. How much and when depends on circumstances.

      • Salo

I don’t think Fox have been converted to Clinton.

We have just seen the outer edge of their journalistic professionalism.

There’s a line they are not willing to cross.

        Consider them revealed.

    • wry

I don’t understand this comment. could you explain it?

On another topic, I too, have become a closet Fox watcher.
And I’ve come to respect Pat Buchanan…a little.
      And Lou Dobbs? awesome.

And guess what? I don’t care. I need TV news sometimes and I can’t listen to the anti-Hillary talk on the other stations.

Great web site. We’re a law enforcement family for Hillary.

      • Salo

Rhodes has shown herself. So to has Olberman.

That’s all. Hannity gives her a fairer shake then either of the two.

  • cruz del sur

This is something I can not forgive Fox for doing/saying. http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/18/hume-plame-oath/
Among some other things, are the treatment they gave the Clintons in 98. (who can forget all the crap they said then???)

But then again, that is just me.

    • http://NoQuarterUSA.net Larry Johnson

I agree with you. I don’t forgive them. The fact that Fox is the most “fair” is the ultimate indictment of the others.

      • cruz del sur

Glad to see that we can still agree on something.

  • SJ

Tonight on FOX there is a show about the new nut case that is one of Obama’s followers Father Michael Pfleger.

I keep asking why is it that his man Obama has all these crazy people that are racist, and defend the Nation of Islam around him?

I just cannot understand why it is only FOX that seems to be following this trail with Obama, do the average American really care what Obama is not telling us, am very sure that some of these people must have over the years influenced his thinking and that is very worrying.

    • ginaswo

  • http://www.savagepolitics.com cc1983

CognitiveDissonance, don’t forget to mention savagepolitics.com for people who want a less biased look at the 08 reace. I’m a former tv/radio reporter/producer and I’m absolutely appalled at the pro-obama bias we’ve seen from CNN, MSNBC and the others. Tim Russert, Cafferty, Shuster, Williams are sexist pigs and actually gloat in their disdain of Hillary.

I too can NO LONGER watch the networks because they don’t even try to be objective. I’m not a crazy right-wing republican. I’m a moderate democrat, but nowadays I find Bill O’Reilly and others on FOX more objective. Believe me..that’s a pretty sad state of affairs for that to happen.

The liberal media absolutely despises Clinton and have been on the warpath for years to burn Hillary at the stake. What’s truly disturbing to me is that clueless pundits are willing to market Obama as the coming messiah, yet Obama is a closet-racist candidate who has attended a black supremacist church for twenty years, a candidate who financially supports and will not disown a racist and hate-america pastor, a man who has surrounded himself with radical and racist advisors, such as as Zogby, Meeks, Soros, Malley and Brezenski.

This is truly scare stuff people. Obama is the most divisive and un-american candidate out there. I pray people wake up. If he’s on the dem ticket, this democrat is campaigning for, raising money for and voting for John McCain!

  • Linda

Auh, yes. This is giving some (me) a massive headache from all the head shaking I’m experiencing. Totally confusing and things seem to have been flipped. Look at what Randi Rhodes has lowered herself to. We saw it coming for sometime, the change, all about HER and not listening to callers or guests, twisting facts and then the ultimate, calling a former First Lady, Senator and current Progressive Democratic Presidenitial candidate a f*****g wh**e and more. When she used to complain of the RW doing this, who knew it was envy.

Thank you for showingwhat’s really going on.

It seems to show that absolute power corrupting absolutely isn’t limited to our politicians. We trusted them and they abused it to push their own agenda. Worse, because they were supposed to know better.

  • http://www.correntewire.com/blog/myiq2xu myiq2xu

My theory is that Roger and Rupert realize that if they want FAUX News to have a life after Bush, they need to turn into a real news channel and not the propaganda arm of the GOP.

But if I’m right, I expect they’ll happily switch back to propaganda when the time is right and their cred is built up.

  • Thrasyboulos

There is nothing liberal abot the media. You have to realize that they see the big picture, can turn on a dime, and the coverage is always time/circumstance depedent.

On the latter. When/if the time comes, they’ll give Obama his due. Right now, it’s the all out Obama leghumping is a function of how easy it will be for them when/if he’s the Democratic candidate.

Liberal media, even in irony, is exactly the image they foster to confuse the issue. Nothing is at it seems for them. They win twice with Bambi. One, by supporting him they support their favorite view of themselves as “liberal”, and two, they get the candidate they want vs the object of their desire, John McCain.

  • Kevin

I repeat, the source of that quote is CMPA… as if they wouldn’t back Fox? Please…

  • http://speaktruth speaktruth

Yes, and think, who benefits from this confused state we are all in?

We are mere citizens, not privy to all the information we would need to make truly informed decisions, so we depend on media to inform us. Why free media is needed for real democracy.

So given the plethora of choices, we learn which sources are most trustworthy, and when something new occurs we go to those trusted sources for enlightenment.
So what happens now when we have no idea who to trust?
Did Olbermann spend all those months bashing Bush when no one liked him anyway to gain our trust in time to sell Obama?
    It’s all a big mystery.

  • http://speaktruth speaktruth

And isn’t this what media has always done anyway – pretend to be concerned for we “common people”, build rapport with us so they can go ahead and sell us on their corporate interests?

So now that we are liking Fox (lol?), will we believe us when they sell us the next big thing? (Like McCain?)

So you guys were on Outfoxed? Very informative doc. It’s repetitive in spots to hammer and hammer and hammer and hammer….. the points home but not as tedious as some are.

I too was jolted when I saw the paragraph at the bottom of the CMPA release with the Hillary/Obama results. After a little thought it made sense (or perhaps cognitive dissonance kicked in) because either one could be an opponent at this stage. Fox has nothing to gain.

Rendell’s corroboration of the CMPA data sealed it for me. Thanks for that tidbit.

Once one candidate is a nominated I expect that Fox will discover that the nominee is the antichrist.

  • http://www.reflectivepundit.com Brigitte N.

I would not go as far as you do; I do not think that Fox News on the whole is more “fair and balanced” than the rest of the news media. But I have certainly noticed that the pro-Obama/pro-McCain tilt and the anti-Clinton slant in many of the mainstream media’s bastions are persistent throughout the primary season.
For a long time, I haven’t had any doubt that the MSM want a McCain-Obama match-up in the fall. I can only guess that their real preference is McCain. If Senator Biden was right, when he proclaimed that former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani was all about “a noun, a verb, and 9/11,” it is also the case that Senator McCain is all about a noun, a verb, and his time as POW.

  • yttik

Ahh, crap. The world has been flipped on it’s head again. I’ve also been reduced to watching Fox News and visiting so called right leaning blogs. I can’t visit the so called progressives, they’ve lost their fricken minds over Obama, much like Fox news did with Bush a few years ago.

I had to laugh tonight though, perhaps Obama really is a uniter? I found myself completely agreeing with my very right wing Republican BIL. That hasn’t happened in more then a decade, LOL. He still can’t stand Hillary, but I have to admit he expressed his complaints with more respect towards her then I’ve seen coming from many Democrats.

“Right. Now, you got one candidate who’s got an appeal to the blue-collar Democrats: Clinton. I call them the beer drinkers. And then you got the white-wine crowd, which Obama appeals to. There’s a brilliant article by Ron Brownstein in the latest issue of National Journal in which he charts the change in the nature of the Democrat-primary vote, and it’s becoming younger, more affluent, and more liberal. And that means that blue-collar Democrats, whatever’s left of them, are on their way out of the Democratic Party.”

I know they are hammering Obama big time – but their reason of being has not changed. It’s to promote the Republican Party and their initiatives across the Murdoch empire. Let that one wash around for a while. Fox News hasn’t changed at all….

    • chris

of course their reason hasn’t changed, but you should ask yourself…what is reliable news reporting? If you have any experience breaking down propaganda you’ll see that countries like the former Soviet Union had papers that the people learned to read what Pravda said. A good Romanian journalist friend of mine talked about how they would read the papers to find out what was happening in the west and could figure it out pretty accurately now that he lives here. He learned to outsmart the filter.

This is done here too, but in our case we have to consider that instead of having ONE STATE paper, we have a million opinions…sort of the yang to the yin. And after a while its hard for people to cover up the truth for very long…but easy if you simply think Keith Olbermann is going to tell it to you late at night.

I encourage you to read as close to first source as you can instead of relying up on second, third, 10th…sourcing.

I hear FoxNews or CNN say, “Intel report today says.”…then I go looking for the document itself. Some are short reads of a few pages and some are 600page or more in PDF form. Its worth the dig.

For instance: when Brit “Slackjaw” Hume would refer over and over to the Senate 2002 Intel Report to claim Plame sent Wilson cuz it was in the report…I downloaded the whole report and found…this was bullshit. And because I read the whole report (most of which has nothing to do with Plame or Wilson) it was easy to debunk it on arrival.

This is how to be a well armed media militia.

Olbermann became a lefty hero for bashing Bush. He made no attempt to be fair or honest and so most libs loved him because most libs agreed with him. That may be fun, but it ain’t journalism. He made it his shtick to bash O’Reilly. Easy to do since O’Reilly can’t open his mouth without inserting size 13 foot. Soon boring.

Now Olbermann, TweetyPants, Scarborough et al spend much of their time bashing Hillary Clinton, with a sideswipe at Bush now and again & over at FOX they are equal in their disdain for both Democrats. WTF indeed.

I seldom watch FOX, never watch MSNBC and pop over to CNN occasionally to find out who is bashing the Clintons presently; Cafferty & Crowley usually, the Laurel and Hardy of CNN. Only Dobbs doesn’t worship the Obama and is concerned about voters being disenfranchised. Doesn’t seem to worship “da roolz” either.

Some of us, many of us, maybe even most of us truly believed that the unfair treatment liberal politicians got in the MSM would now be somewhat “balanced” by the fair treatment they would all get in Left Blogostan. We believed in and participated at blogs that told us how they were all about open and fair elections. They claimed to be the alternative to the hypocrisy in the media. They said they hated the tactics and ethics of the evil Republicans/Conservatives. They were against all things “Rovian”. Now we find out, mostly not so much. The few Blogs with any integrity left for the left can now be counted on the fingers of one hand.

If the dreaded FOX, the Murdoch Death Star is now the most balanced then that is all the proof we need that the rest of media is truly a sewer.

I agree with Larry and Susan, for some reason that I can’t figure out, the media has been grossly unfair to Hillary. The media seems to be bending over backwards to give Obama only good press even though he has a lot of gray matter in his background. I don’t think the media thinks some much about the truth as of what would be the most interesting candidate to have running against McCain. I don’t think was always the case. Tabloid news coverage seems to be the new news topic.

I stopped watching Fox soon after the 2000 election theft. Now, they’re they only network who will give any negative coverage of Mr. Hope and semi-positive coverage of Hillary (as positive as they’re capable of giving). WTF? That network has been banned from my home for 8 years! Something is seriously wrong.:(

Oh yeah…Keith Olbermann is now on my “banned from my home list” and I never missed his show.
