LD, it not limited to the hood. Out here in the burbs, my school district Superintendent said to my spouse and I she would not hold back my youngest daughter in 5th grade. She had failed grades for several years running and still she was promoted.

Why would the Superintendent not respect our wishes? Because she said, "it will hurt her social skills." My daughter is part butterfly and social skills are her strong suit.

I took her out of public school and into a Baptist school until one day 4 years later, the head master says, my butterfly has to shut down her my space at home or she would be expelled. It had nothing to do with her performance or behavior. The kicker was the headmasters kids had my space accounts...

I wish I could have given her a Jesuit education, but alas both schools catered to the social guilt.

You may as well ask what is wrong with our society. Standards of ethical conduct, honor, and integrity are only quaint words associated with a time long since past.

Thank you Larry - great post.

Make no mistake, scathing insights such as these do not just happen to end up in the press. They are strategically released by people who do not want to be implicated in the future for not having provided fair warning.

Excellent point. I even think Geithner last week said specifically that FDIC supported "the plan". Looks like Ms. Bair felt she need set the record straight.

Having taught at the university level for many years, the anaology is terrifying. Those socially promoted kids eneded up at the universities, and the social promotion continued (known as "grade inflation") so that eventually you could not tell the difference between those who were truly bright and committed students and those who were just passed along. Then all of them are unleashed on employers who don't know for sure what they are getting, based on transcripts anyway.

Thanks for the important story, Larry. I hope someone has the courage to say "enough of this nonsense!" and can do something about it.
