Ruth Tolley Gwinn was my flight instructor in the 1970s, and became a life long friend. She and John have always been a true friend to the "little guys" in aviation. I have been a flight instructor myself since 1984, and am now an education and aviation missionary in Papua New Guinea.

Great Story!

Thank you so much for posting this story.
We are a nation of hard working - stand up people.
Sometimes we need to be reminded of what we can do when we have to. We do come from good strong stock. Every person has inner strength but sometimes we have to look for it.
Thanks again for this inspiring story.

Thank you Eastan -

Fascinating story. Enjoyed it very much. Their generation knew how to find opportunities from the unexpected - even tragedy- and thrive. Now we want everything prepackaged, preprogramed and pre scheduled. We've lost our much of our ability to role with the punches or make lemonade from lemons.

I feel so blessed to have known people of this caliber.
The previous generations worked hard and struggled, but they never forgot that their country was the greatest place to call home!
While some were called low-class, they were not, for they took pride in their accomplishments and never were defeated!

Wow, what an inspiring story! I especially like this part:

“I remember one of the cadets,” she says. “ He turned to his friend and said ‘Oh God, I’ve got the woman!’” Many WWII pilots got their first training on that little unpaved airfield, from that woman.

good story my Mom told me. She was born in 1936, times were tough. Her Dad took off and left my Grandma w 7 mouths to feed. My Mom said there wasn't even a can of beans in the house. So my proud Grandma swallowed her pride and went down to the welfare office to get some food vouchers. They wouldn't help her. So she goes home and calls the Mayor's office. It was after hours and he was the only one there and answered the phone. My Grandma proceeded to tell him what happened and that her kids had to eat so she had no choice but to go down to the supermarket and steal some groceries. The mayor got excited and told her not to do that and within a few hours, tons of groceries were personally delivered by the mayor to my Grandma's house. He also told her go back down to the welfare office and they were instructed to give her everything she needed, blankets, pillows, the works.

Chances of that happening now? Zilch. They'd say it wasn't their problem.

Excellent post. My parents are still living and I cherish the stories from their younger days. I never get tired of hearing about them no matter how many times they tell them. They truly are a lesson in what is good, right and important in life. Working hard, being kind and respectful to others, being responsible and unselfish and loving and appreciating the blessedness of this wonderful country. Thank God for millions of people like this couple who knew what all of that meant.

I pray that there are enough people to extinguish the flame of others trying to diminish and downgrade this country and what it stands for. If you don't like it, get your ass out and go live in Cuba or China or the Middle East. See how well they treat you there.

God Bless America!!
