Rocky v. Apollo: 56% to 38% (Open Thread) [Update]

UPDATE — Obama is attempting to counter the bad polls by trying to buy the state of Pennsylvania (via Mark Halperin’s Time magazine blog, The Page) — while he stiffs the voters in Michigan and Florida:

Nobody Has Ever Spent 2.2 Million in the State

OBAMA’S WEEKLY PENNSYLVANIA TV BUY BREAKS ALL RECORDS

Democratic media consultant Neil Oxman, who is neutral in the race: “Nobody has ever spent 2.2 million in this state: not Rendell, not Specter, not Casey, not Santorum, not Bush, not Kerry…That’s unbelievable.”

PA Women, Whites, Stand by Hillary, Turn Back The Clock On Obama“: “In a Democratic Primary in Pennsylvania today, 04/08/08, two weeks to the vote, Hillary Clinton defeats Barack Obama 56% to 38%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCAU-TV Philadelphia, KDKA-TV Pittsburgh, WHP-TV Harrisburg, and WNEP-TV Wilkes-Barre.”

The results are almost identical to a SurveyUSA poll released one month ago. Then, Clinton led by 19. Today, 18. In between, however, in a SurveyUSA tracking poll released last week, Obama had closed to within 12 points. What happened in the past 7 days? 1st: Some of the men who flirted with Obama at the end of March have returned to Clinton. Other men have moved to the sidelines. Last week, Obama led by 7 among men. Men were 46% of likely voters. Today, Clinton leads among men. Men are 42% of likely voters. 2nd: Obama lost ground among voters age 35 to 49. A week ago, he had caught Clinton in this age group. Today, he’s down 18. By contrast, there is no movement among voters age 50+. Clinton’s lead among voters 50+ is stable across all 3 tracking polls. 3rd: In Southeast PA, which includes Philadelphia and which makes up 42% of likely Democratic voters, Clinton had a good week, Obama a bad week. Clinton is above 50% for the first time and Obama is now down by 9 in a region he must win to carry the state. In Southwest PA, which includes Pittsburgh, Clinton polls at 60% for the first time, 25 points atop Obama. Only in West Central PA, which includes Johnstown, has there been consistent movement toward Obama. 4th:

Among moderates, Obama lost key ground while Clinton gained ground. Clinton now leads by 24 points, 60% to 36%. Obama also lost ground among Liberals. And while Obama’s support fell among Conservatives, so did Clinton’s. 5th: Interviewing for SurveyUSA’s 04/01/08 release, one week ago, occurred in the middle of Obama’s 6-day bus tour through Pennsylvania, which began on 03/28/08. Obama may have benefited a week ago from the media spotlight.

Summary: The complete absence of movement among whites and among women is striking. Among white voters, Clinton polled at 61% in all 3 tracking polls. Among women, Clinton was at 62% a month ago, 62% last week, and 61% today. These two unwavering core constituencies help make Clinton so formidable in the Keystone state.

Great headline, Susan. Rocky is going to kick butt in PA!

He could use the humility. God knows, he is completely lacking in any.

    • eurogirl70

He could use the humility. God knows, he is completely lacking in any.

The problem is that a loss in PA will no more produce humility in Senator Obama than a win will produce scorn and ridicule for her opponents in Senator Clinton. She is classy. He, on the other hand, will simply say that it was the racist “Archie Bunker” types who refuse to get behind the heir apparent; namely himself. He is so much like Bush it’s not funny. The two of them are what i like to refer to as “ignorant apathetics”; they know what they know and that is all that they need to know.” Only an ignorant apathetic could argue that the years he spent in Indonesia as a child constitute “foreign policy experience”

He’s far too uppity – no offense Uppity! :-)

From one “typical” garlic nose to another :-)

      • simon

I’ve noticed Obama never really does anything, never any active thinking in response to ANY situation, all he, and his crew do is strike a pose, and wait for someone to take the picture.

Like Madonna, in the song, “Vogue.”

        Have you noticed it, too?

Axelrod, and Rove’s game comes down to striking a pose, as opposed to defending.

Their first instinct, when threatened, is massive fear, strike a pose to buy time, and then ATTACK!

Which, if you see it, and know it, can be trolled, provoked, very easily.

        • alibe

a friend of mine refers to his pose as his “dictator pose”. Head and chin up, that certain look on his face…that dictator pose…

While listening to a radio show this afternoon, a person named Lou who stated he was a member of the FBI; stated that Obama could not pass a backround check to be an FBI agent. The question was if he could not pass one for the FBI how could he “pass” one to POTUS?

Anyone out in NQ with some expertise in this area care to offer an opinion?

It really brought home why it so important that we vet our candidates.
              Thanks.

              • Andy

                Teak, really?

                Whoa, that’s alarming if true…..

What does a background check for FBI agent could require that would not be required for POTUS?

                Anyone?

                • TeakWoodKite

He was elected to office and the standards are different. What struck me about what the caller said was on character, associations of and history of more than “experimental” use of drugs BO would not make the cut.

If anyone has exeperience doing this kind of evaluation, I would interested in an appraisal, even if you take the “personality” out of the equation would BO make the cut?

I read somewhere in the last few days that Hillary has very strong polling numbers in a majority of the states that have primaries coming up.

I believe that is why they tried to run her out of the race a week ago. That was a desperate tactic. They know that the longer Hillary can stay in and rack up the votes, the weaker their position becomes.

And, I think Obama has peaked and his numbers should start to soften. Especially after his Wright fiasco. I think that story has legs and the impact will stay with the voters.

    • AF catfish

About Wright: some voters I’ve talked to only know about Wright’s “God damn America” comment and think that was the only controversial comment.

I said the sermons where he called out Bill from the pulpit, another where he called out Hillary from the pulpit were more offensive to me. The voters hadn’t heard of these events.

      Food for thought.

And don’t anyone lose heart when they see NC polls either. It is very interesting that most of the polls I have seen have a higher percentage of AAs than the population in general. 21% AA population, but the pollster choose to poll 36% AA!!!??? It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but there you have it.

I think she is going to pull NC out and win, in spite of what polls say.

That’s the beauty or flaw of a poll, depend on how you want to see it. Different poll gives different picture. This poll shows that the picture of PA is not the same as what other polls show. What doest that mean? It means the result will depend on the voters on April 22. So Obama supporters should quit yapping for Hillary to drop off.

      • mel

Any poll that doesn’t have crosstabs, etc. for the general public is highly suspect no matter who they favor. If you can’t see WHO they asked and WHAT they asked, it isn’t worth much.

I would say the same thing about any poll, regardless of who the candidate is. The only thing interesting and informational about polls, is the internals, the rest is just some random numbers, might as well be 0 to 10…

The internals are where the real information is, not just the number they put up…if I were BO, I’d be seriously worried from the internals I’ve seen.

Notice to Obamabots — We old farts are NOT going to change our minds. We want experience to deal with the massive problems that bush JR. is leaving behind!

    —————-

I believe it is significant that her core is holding firm.

Also I agree that these numbers are why the Obama storm troopers were demanding that Clinton quit. What nerve those old white men are — what sexist Pigs they are — Kerry and the rest of the senility gang.

“God damn America” does have holding power — when that broke — FOX news was playing Rev. Wright’s words in a loop — and Fox TV is on a countless public places — like military bases. So it’s not surprising that most people associat Rev. Wright with the one statement. Many of his other nasty bits are too long for the sound bite — “God damn America” is a true made for TV sound bite. I wonder how many times over the years Rev. Wright has chanted that hateful sound bite.

OK — when is Donna B. going to step down? She is on my list of people who must GO NOW.

Did anyone else see that Obama mentioned in his speech about how vastly qualified he is in foreign policy that he travelled and spent time in Pakistan?

Has anyone read his book? Did he mention the trip to Pakistan in the text? Why on earth would he be in Pakistan? I don’t understand why he would suddenly bring that up. I know the Pakistan of today is very different than the one of 20 years ago, but it was hardly a vacation hotspot for American teens.

What other countries has he been to?

OK everybody here at No Quarter. It is time to get the checkbook or credit card out.

By the time I read this post and got back to the top there was an UPDATE that Obama had just made a 2.2M media buy in PA.

With such good news about the polls in PA we cannot let Hillary down now. We have to help her over the top.

I gave $200 about two weeks ago. And I just gave another $50 just now. And right now I am just getting back on my feet from a layoff from Nov. to Jan., and am only working half-time now. So funds are tight.

But I gave. SO I AM CHALLENGING ALL OF YOU TO MEET MY DONATION AND EVEN EXCEED IT.

Stop Obama Give to Hillary today.

    • simon

      I will donate.

I keep wondering if Obama’s money is all bundled, you know, some rich guy making donations in the names of college kids, or members of a charity, or something, sort of like Rezko did for him.

Something just stinks about his money, too.

          Headline at Politico:
Obama supporter Oprah takes a big dive

“To be sure, Oprah remains one of the most popular figures in America, but recent data suggest her popularity has eroded. One possible explanation for this decline is that her endorsement of Obama and her support for him may have done more to damage impressions of her than to strengthen support for Obama.”

Oprah’s ratings have dropped like a rock — Ellen’s ratings are going up like a rocket.

I don’t watch either but it gives me a lot of pleasure to report this trivia.

      • Catriley

I’ve read that much of his money has come from the family of lobbyists, wherein babies are donating up to the legal limit for him. Those lobbyists and oil industry exces have some very very advanced children!

      • JM

Consider this, Barack Obama is supported by some very rich peopel with very deep pockets. Oprah, and George Soros are billionaires. His national finance chairwoman is also a billionaire! And people complained about the millions that the Clinton’s have earned in the past 10 years! I wonder if one of these three people has been giving money to other people so that these people can send the money into Barack’s campaign. He doubt very much that he is receiving these large amounts of money for his campaign every month through every day people.

    • AF catfish

bert instead of donating, you can make calls using the calling tool. It will dial you into a number that doesn’t accrue charges on your bill.

But yes donating is good too.

    • Catriley

I tell ya, that Soros $$ goes a long way! And those lobbyists that aren’t really lobbyists, and the bundlers. Obama is raking in the corporate bundler cash and acting like it’s grandma’s cracking open the piggy bank to support him.

Makes me ill that people actually are swayed by Axelrod and Gibbs ads. Another Bush, Jr.

    • TJ

Okay. I can scrounge for another $50.

    • griff

Ask Bill Clinton to pitch in too…he has made tens of millions from influence peddling…

Or ask him to reach into the so called charitable donation, claimed to be over 10 million, which went into a family trust, but only a fraction went out to charities.

Tell him charity begins at home.

It’s hell here in the Philly burbs (near Valerie Plame’s hometown).
Obama is absolutely blasting the airwaves with commercial after commercial.
I actually have my television off most of the day now, except for my Philly sports games.
But in the true spirit of yin and yang, there is a plus side for me. I’m enjoying the fact that Obama is wasting millions and millions of his supporter’s dollars on a state election he is going to lose by a large margin.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Oh god, I sympathize with you. It was hard the weekend i was in the hospital before the state caucuses were held. At home, I have my trusty DVR, so I can pause shows, and skip all the commercials. But in the hospital I had to listen to the commercials — and they kept running the same damn boring Obama commercial over and over and over.

At least four-to-one Obama for every Hillary commercial. And why did they run the same commercial all the time? With all those millions, they could have run more than one commercial.

If I’d been undecided, I might have voted for her just because I didn’t get so sick of her commercials. (‘course — and I’m a broken record on this but, dammit, I’m still P.O.’d about it — i couldn’t vote, disenfranchised because of the unfair caucus system.)

That’s how politicians campaign in the Caribbean — load speakers on trucks with the candidate orating as the vehicle moves through the neighborhoods.

Thankfully on most islands (former Brit Colonies) the campaign season is by law very short.

What the hell is the purpose of being hit repeatedly with Obama ads? Seems like this will merely harden an already set in cement vote for Hillary.

Good — let him spend the money. Who cares if it makes him look vain and not concerned about living within a budget. This is the message my distant relatives would be taking away from over spending on ads. My greatgrandmother was Pennsylvania Dutch (and Scot-Irish) — tough, hearty woman. You couldn’t put anything over on her.

  • JoeySky

His money goes right into the pocket of those cable TV. No wonder they love him so much.

  • Prabhata

If people are like me and are turned off by a barrage of commercials, it will backfire. I find those tactics counterproductive to get the message out. Unless it’s gold or money, more of the same is not better. There is feeling of abuse.

  • Dem_base

2.2 million in TV ads for PA?

Seems very desperate to me. Good, let them waste more money to get beat by 15-20%.

People get sick of being deluged with political ads. In Texas it was Obama overkill for weeks – did not do him much good – and will not help him in PA.

Those internal polls must look very good for Clinton indeed.

  • Prabhata

OK, I’ll match. I gave a week ago, but Hillary needs it.

  • Nobama

Obama is coming off looking like an arrogant asshole. The more he spends in PA, the sweeter Hillary’s double-digit victory will be. Wanna see the smug wiped off his mug.

One of these days, Obama’s false hope and hype is going to wear thin and that day can’t come soon enough.

  • TJ

She should say”I’m not gonna drive you insane with stupid ads-I’m gonna donate the $$ to PA___________(charity) instead!” Brilliant, no?

  • street_parade

I’m new here, but I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and the many astute comments.

I think what we are seeing with Obama is that the limits of ‘marketing’ are now being reached. The ‘new and improved’, and ‘fun’ characteristics of the product (in this case a candidate for President, but it might as well be a new model car) are wearing thin and the voter / consumer is now looking under the hood and kicking the tires. I’ll stop with the analogy, but I think we are at that point and it is going to be very difficult for Obama to overcome it.

In many ways, much of the imagery of his campaign — revival-like campaign events with over-the-top adoration (staged?), Will.I.Am music videos, celebrity supporters, Obama Girl, artisic campaign posters are coming back to bite him. They got him far beyond the point where a candidate of similar experience could expect to get — but they also make his campaign seem like little more than the particularly well-funded opening of a blockbuster movie. The opening weekend was huge, but the box office is now in steep decline.

    • sjc-tx

Well you have to consider the crowd he is “playing to”……. As I was told this morning by an obama caller ‘he has pulled in 80% of the youth vote to get them involved’… I had to bite my tongue and remember the manners my momma taught me!

  • Deke

I do believe the SUSA poll showing Hillary up 18% points is correct. I don’t think there will much movement in the polls there are very few undecideds and everyone has hardened there support for their candidate. What the Obama campaign is attempting to do is create a sense of enevetiblity to his nomination thus driving Hillary supporters away because of a lost cause. By flooding the airways with his commericals he is attempting to create a sense of inevitablity and the msm reinforces it by call for Hillary to quit. But the Obama campaign knows its lead is marginal and the momentium will be with Hillary if the SUSA poll comes true.

( I’ve got Cook and Carley names to drop so i think i’m safe ) I thought dancing with the stars was bad..
    3. If i get free tixs to the summer tour should i?
    a. burn them in the fireplace?
    b. Give them to in-laws?
( you can vote for any family member here..substitute that crazy uncle that pissed you off last thanksgiving..your choice..)

Those that vote.. i hope it wasn’t an operative for Ron Paul..all that extra activity would likely produce a sudden rash of TV spots for Mr. Paul.

I am so happy, and so heartened, to see that women are holding steady for Hillary! 62% a month ago, 61% today. I believe that they will be the least likely to buy the Obama Blitz and are the ones most in need of the kind of help a new Clinton Administration will deliver. Thank you for holding strong. Please keep it up. Those of us in other states are working hard to bring this Primary home for you and the election for all of us!

He’s like a puffed rice, hollow inside. Thanks, Pennsylvanians for seeing the true self of this man.

new details of numbers, by state, who die because of lack of health coverage

the consequences are grave, literally (no humor intended)

I live in NE Pa which is a bastion of Hillary support. It’s interesting to know that 2.2million will buy you such wall to wall coverage that it starts to turn folks off. His commercials are incredibly irritating.

Can he buy a win in Pa? Nah. I think he’s going to get his doors blown in here.

  • HC

Actually thats not true, nice try though.

Did any of you see the article written by Helen Thomas, a truly great newsperson. Check it out:

I feel really good about Hillary’s chances and I’m sticking by her no matter what. I will never vote for Obama even if somehow he is nominated. He is not to be trusted, too much baggage and too many bad associates, too many lies and too much hype.
