Is Pat Leahy Losing His Mind?

Leahy

Some politicians get to a certain age and you can’t help but notice that the edge has worn off from them. They say things that seem embarrassing after being so widely respected for so many years. And they take actions that are contrary to the position of political leadership that they have been entrusted with. And sadly, all of these things have become all too true about a particular long serving member of the U.S. Senate. And I am sure you are aware of who I am referring to. Yes, it is none other than Pat Leahy.

The first symptoms of Leahy losing his mind occurred on January 17, 2008 when he endorsed Barack Obama for President. Leahy, clearly showing signs of mental illness declared:

Leahy: Obama can ‘reintroduce America to world’

“I believe many around the world have lost respect for America,” Leahy said. “We can restore that respect, but we need a president who can reintroduce America to the world.”

The point Pat Leahy misses is the obvious one. The world knows who we are. George Bush is the one that forgot.

Leahy’s next public display of mental illness occurred not a month later when he scheduled a secret recess hearing for the confirmation of Bush nominee, Catharina Haynes, for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Leahy not only alienated Democratic colleagues on the Judiciary Committee by making it impossible for them to appear at the hearing, he for some reason invited Senator John Warner to sit in even though he isn’t even a member of the committee.

Christy Hardin Smith was not amused by this development. She made the point succinctly.

What Is Pat Leahy Thinking?

I’ve got a lot of questions, not the least of which is why would the democratic chair of the Judiciary Committee try to aid President Bush in packing the nation’s federal courts in lifetime appointments of ultra-conservatives so close to the end of the Bush Presidency?

Good question Christy. My theory is that he is suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness. Don’t believe me? Read on.

The next public example of his mental illness occurred, you guessed it, a month later when he had that epiphany that Obama always claims folks have about him. Though it is probably more likely that he banged his head on something very hard and unforgiving. Yes, dear daft old Leahy decided that it was time for Hillary to call it quits even though there are millions of Americans that haven’t had the chance to express their votes yet.

LEAHY: CLINTON ‘OUGHT TO WITHDRAW’

“There is no way that Senator Clinton is going to win enough delegates to get the nomination,” Leahy said. “She ought to withdraw and she ought to be backing Senator Obama. Now, obviously that’s a decision that only she can make. Frankly I feel that she would have a tremendous career in the Senate.”

So nice of him to think he could speak for millions of American citizens. And just so polite of him to leave out the fact that Senator Obama can’t win enough delegates to get the nomination either. But he is a guy and if nothing else Pat Leahy is a good ole boy.

It was after this event that I seriously started to consider whether or not Pat Leahy was beginning to lose his mind. When he endorsed Obama it was almost expected. He probably had a few too many koolaids, or whatever else he is drinking these days. And that secret hearing… well I chalked that up to bravado. Because if there is one thing about Pat Leahy that no one can deny it is the fact that he is full of himself and convinced of his self importance. Come to think of it that is probably why he endorsed Obama. They are very alike in that way.

But then Leahy told the world that the votes of millions of Americans were worthless. He said that they were somehow standing in the way of an Obama coronation. And worse still, he said that all those pesky Hillary supporters were helping John McCain by demanding that they be given the right to vote. Well, that is when it all began to sink in. Pat Leahy is losing his mind.

So I sat back and waited. I figured that all would be ok until the monthly cycle came about. It was still possible that these were aberrations and that maybe somehow this was connected with the full moon. I pulled out my ephemeris and began to research the days that Pat was getting wacky. Uranus was conjunct with Mars on a few of the days and this is never a good omen. But there was no trend I could immediately discern despite working for three sleepless nights trying to make sense of it all. But then yesterday something happened that disrupted my monthly theory entirely. Because yesterday Pat Leahy proved without a doubt that he is losing his mind and it is fading fast.

As confirmed by many anonymous sources in the Senate, Pat Leahy is trying to oust President pro tempore, Robert Byrd from his Chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Of course no one is going on record saying this but according to The Hill four independent sources have confirmed the same story. Leahy is gunning for Byrd’s job.

Sen. Patrick Leahy is privately indicating interest in taking over the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee from an ailing Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) if necessary, four democratic sources said Thursday.

The Vermont Democrat, third-in-line on the panel, strongly denied those claims. But all four sources said Leahy has sent several signals to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about the move.

“It’s been going on. There have been lots of whispers in Reid’s ear,” said one Democratic source.

Leahy “has tried to meet with Reid several times” about Byrd’s chairmanship, according to another source.

Poor old Robert Byrd has been having a few physical problems of late. At age 90 he doesn’t heal as fast as some of us younger whipper snappers. And indeed he doesn’t have that same fire that he once had. I don’t know any 90 year olds that do. But still it is not an excuse for Pat Leahy to go behind his ailing back and attempt to subvert the Senate rules so that Leahy can chair a very powerful committee that is rightfully Byrd’s. It is disgusting and immoral for Leahy to demonstrate not only a disregard for Senate rules but also of the normal unwritten and unspoken human rules that cause us to respect our elders and help them when they become ill. But then again, he does endorse Obama who had no problem at all throwing his 85 year old grandma under the bus. I guess they are like two peas in a pod.

Leahy has been around long enough to know what the rules of the Senate are. And Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii is next in line to chair the committee should Byrd retire. So it has to be mental illness that is causing Leahy to take these actions. Come to think of it, take a look at the picture of Leahy up above. Doesn’t he remind you of Uncle Fester from the Addams Family? Can’t you just see a light bulb coming out of his mouth. I mean seriously, Pat Leahy is losing his mind.

And now all the comments to this post have been erased?

The Obamabots aren’t even going to wait for their Messiah to become President; they’ve already started to act like little Fascists, attacking anyone who dares disagree with them. God help us all.

    • Fleaflicker

This was somehow all lost last night. I don’t think the Obama folks are behind it. Just an accident I suspect.

John…..There is no place for God in the fascism that is coming and no need for the old White God. OBAMESSIAH is here to heal our souls….. Resistance is futile….Canada’s lookin pretty good, hope the “Pres. of Canada” is prepared for the refugees. This is a rigged election. Leahy is a putz.

Obamamessiah knows why we Pennsylvanians are gun loving, religion clinging bigots who are “suspicious of black men”.

Thank God for sending Obamamessiah to explain us to rich people in CA who are going to come and give us the 10 talking points about how we will be saved.

      • workingclass artist

In the spirit of internet confessional…..I would like to take full personal responsibility for all that ails all minority groups. Typical White Working Class voter just trying to alieviate my white guilt. Also I have been manipulating OBAMESSIAH with my special voo-doo doll purchased from a Pro-Hillary site with instructions in 4 languages. The recent mistakes made by OBAMESSIAH are my fault, I’ve been trying to influence the election. I am resigning from the international group I belong to who are trying to hijack the U.S. I’m now going to take another hit from that US Govt. Issue Crack. Pass the pipe.

        • Fleaflicker

          Hahahaha. That is SO Funny!

  • TeresaINPa

I don’t know if he is crazy, but he is certainly minding the voters business rather than his own. We will decide when the primaries are over Pat, thank you.

I think his judicial appointments issue is about being another anti-choice white male RCC member. I could be wrong but it seems to me that’s his story.

    • IODINE

LEAHEY BETTER THINK AGAIN WHEN HE DECIDES TO TAKE BYRD ON, I THINK EVEN AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 90 MR BYRD WILL OUTDO THAT NIMCOMPOOP.

The comments were lost because the site was moved to a new server. The post and comments were made during the move. It is that simple.

    • Andy

What happened to the post about Obama’s SF comments ?

      • Fleaflicker

Somehow that disappeared too Andy. It will all be fixed a little later on. Things like this are natural when changing over from one server to another. At least they can be.

Mr Johnson, you and the NQ crew do a bang up job.

      Thanks.

Seems that people in PA are “bitter” — at Barack Obama…

Obama refuses to pay them the traditional “street money” they use to reward people for getting out the vote for him.

Fourteen months into a campaign that has the feel of a movement, Sen. Barack Obama has collided with the gritty political traditions of Philadelphia, where ward bosses love their candidates, but also expect them to pay up.

The dispute centers on the dispensing of “street money,” a long-standing Philadelphia ritual in which candidates deliver cash to the city’s Democratic operatives in return for getting out the vote.

    [...]

“This is a machine city, and ward leaders have to pay their committee people,” Campbell said. “Barack Obama’s campaign doesn’t pay workers, and I guarantee you if they don’t put up some money for those street workers, those leaders will most likely take Clinton money. It won’t stop him from winning Philadelphia, but he won’t come out with the numbers that he needs” to win the state.

A neutral observer, state Rep. Dwight Evans, whose district is in northwest Philadelphia, said there might be a racial subtext to the dispute. Ward leaders, he said, see Obama airing millions of dollars worth of television ads in the city — money that benefits largely white station owners, feeding resentment. People wonder why Obama isn’t sharing the largesse with the largely African American field workers trying to get him elected, Evans said.

“They view it that the white people are getting all the money for TV,” said Evans, an African American and former ward leader. “And they’re the ones who are the foot soldiers on the street. They’re predominantly African Americans, and they’re not the ones who are getting that TV money.”

Hardscrabble neighborhoods across the city have come to depend on street money as a welcome payday for knocking on doors, handing out leaflets and speaking to voters as they arrive at polling places.

This is only the TIP of the iceberg with BO and his future relations with the AA community.

Rembember, you heard it here first.

I THINK THE PEOPLE IN PA ARE BEGINNING TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, THEY ARE SMARTER THAN BAMBI GIVES THEM CREDIT FOR, HIS ARROGANCE IS GOING TO BITE HIM IN THE BUTT.

I think Sen. Leahy and other senior members (ie Spkr. Pelosi) of the Legislature made a big mistake by taking sides in this primary election. I am kind of surprised that they, as a group, didn’t decide to stay out of the pure political maneuvering and instead stay alert for GOP BS.

The GOP is going underground now (or to Aspen) to make their Plans. They are going to do everything to make Sen. McCain everyone’s *dream* and let the memories of the last eight horrible years become the Democrats’ problem in more ways than one while the unitary Executive remains in the hands of the GOP.

So instead staying a cool and strong presence the Party Seniors got into the primary maneuverings. Folks – don’t you ever learn? Do you think CDS is about the Clintons? It is about keeping the Democratic Party submissive!

It is ironic and somewhat enraging to me that the Libertarian PROGBLOGS who are crashing the gates don’t realize that they are supporting and exhibiting the same kind of cluelessness! that characterized the DLC.

    • Fleaflicker

I totally agree. they are going to remake McCain in their image. He is going to be portrayed as a war hero, a true conservative AND a maverick willing to cross party lines to get the job done. And he actually has a long record to back most of the image up.

      • Five Thirty

You want to know the main reason that this prospect bothers me? With a GOP unitary executive I won’t get a chance to see what was inside that bunker that Dick Cheney created in the VP residence! :-)

So glad No Quarter is back on-line. It is the first site I go to every morning. I e-mailed Senator Leahy this a.m. [I don't delude myself that it will matter to him] to say Senator Clinton is the best candidate to be president, and I want my Michigan vote to count.
What about the story of a man claiming to have had an encounter with Senator Obama [see Savage Politics]? Is this an off-limits story?

    • Fleaflicker

It isn’t a story I am interested in pursuing.

      • TeakWoodKite

I awhile back in early november of last year, I heard Leahy say that there was only so many days left for the Bush admin…we should not seek to impeach him…
        Well Done FleaFlicker

Here is a senator that should go back to the farm in Vermont and stay there.

        Call me Ishmael;

Would now the wind but had a body; but all the things that most exasperate and outrage mortal man, all these things are bodiless, but only bodiless as objects, not as agents. There’s a most special, most cunning, oh, a most malicious difference! And yet, I say again, and swear it now, that there’s something all glorious and and gracious in the wind.

But glad you guys are back online — can’t do without you!

I’m sorry to have to expose my ignorance but what was it that Pat Leahy ever did that made him some kind of Liberal Icon?

He seems to talk a lot. But then when it comes time to take action…

I’m still waiting for something to be done about Harriet Meiers and Karl Rove ignoring being called in front of the judiciary committee to answer questions. Evidently Senator Leahy as been too busy trying to promote his own career and that of a very junior Senator from Illinois to do his job.

But then the only job Senator Obama seems to have done since he was elected was running for president.

Maybe what Leahy likes about Obama is that he’s another bag of hot air. In training.

  • Palomino

Oh, come on. I’m glad there are still some Hillary-safe sites like No Quarter, but what’s with this stuff? Leahy is mentally ill? Or, recently (another poster), Obama is some kind of pervert/rapist because he made a joke about his cell phone? It’s getting toxic in Hillaryland, and that’s a shame, because she’s my candidate and I think she should fight all the way to the convention if she has to, but we discredit ourselves and reflect badly on her when we behave like Obamaloons. Really.
