Is Pat Leahy Losing His Mind?

Some politicians get to a certain age and you can’t help but notice that the edge has worn off from them. They say things that seem embarrassing after being so widely respected for so many years. And they take actions that are contrary to the position of political leadership that they have been entrusted with. And sadly, all of these things have become all too true about a particular long serving member of the U.S. Senate. And I am sure you are aware of who I am referring to. Yes, it is none other than Pat Leahy.
The first symptoms of Leahy losing his mind occurred on January 17, 2008 when he endorsed Barack Obama for President. Leahy, clearly showing signs of mental illness declared:
Leahy: Obama can ‘reintroduce America to world’
“I believe many around the world have lost respect for America,” Leahy said. “We can restore that respect, but we need a president who can reintroduce America to the world.”
The point Pat Leahy misses is the obvious one. The world knows who we are. George Bush is the one that forgot.
Leahy’s next public display of mental illness occurred not a month later when he scheduled a secret recess hearing for the confirmation of Bush nominee, Catharina Haynes, for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Leahy not only alienated Democratic colleagues on the Judiciary Committee by making it impossible for them to appear at the hearing, he for some reason invited Senator John Warner to sit in even though he isn’t even a member of the committee.
Christy Hardin Smith was not amused by this development. She made the point succinctly.
I’ve got a lot of questions, not the least of which is why would the democratic chair of the Judiciary Committee try to aid President Bush in packing the nation’s federal courts in lifetime appointments of ultra-conservatives so close to the end of the Bush Presidency?
Good question Christy. My theory is that he is suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness. Don’t believe me? Read on.
The next public example of his mental illness occurred, you guessed it, a month later when he had that epiphany that Obama always claims folks have about him. Though it is probably more likely that he banged his head on something very hard and unforgiving. Yes, dear daft old Leahy decided that it was time for Hillary to call it quits even though there are millions of Americans that haven’t had the chance to express their votes yet.
LEAHY: CLINTON ‘OUGHT TO WITHDRAW’
“There is no way that Senator Clinton is going to win enough delegates to get the nomination,” Leahy said. “She ought to withdraw and she ought to be backing Senator Obama. Now, obviously that’s a decision that only she can make. Frankly I feel that she would have a tremendous career in the Senate.”
So nice of him to think he could speak for millions of American citizens. And just so polite of him to leave out the fact that Senator Obama can’t win enough delegates to get the nomination either. But he is a guy and if nothing else Pat Leahy is a good ole boy.
It was after this event that I seriously started to consider whether or not Pat Leahy was beginning to lose his mind. When he endorsed Obama it was almost expected. He probably had a few too many koolaids, or whatever else he is drinking these days. And that secret hearing… well I chalked that up to bravado. Because if there is one thing about Pat Leahy that no one can deny it is the fact that he is full of himself and convinced of his self importance. Come to think of it that is probably why he endorsed Obama. They are very alike in that way.
But then Leahy told the world that the votes of millions of Americans were worthless. He said that they were somehow standing in the way of an Obama coronation. And worse still, he said that all those pesky Hillary supporters were helping John McCain by demanding that they be given the right to vote. Well, that is when it all began to sink in. Pat Leahy is losing his mind.
So I sat back and waited. I figured that all would be ok until the monthly cycle came about. It was still possible that these were aberrations and that maybe somehow this was connected with the full moon. I pulled out my ephemeris and began to research the days that Pat was getting wacky. Uranus was conjunct with Mars on a few of the days and this is never a good omen. But there was no trend I could immediately discern despite working for three sleepless nights trying to make sense of it all. But then yesterday something happened that disrupted my monthly theory entirely. Because yesterday Pat Leahy proved without a doubt that he is losing his mind and it is fading fast.
As confirmed by many anonymous sources in the Senate, Pat Leahy is trying to oust President pro tempore, Robert Byrd from his Chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Of course no one is going on record saying this but according to The Hill four independent sources have confirmed the same story. Leahy is gunning for Byrd’s job.
Sen. Patrick Leahy is privately indicating interest in taking over the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee from an ailing Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) if necessary, four democratic sources said Thursday.
The Vermont Democrat, third-in-line on the panel, strongly denied those claims. But all four sources said Leahy has sent several signals to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about the move.
“It’s been going on. There have been lots of whispers in Reid’s ear,” said one Democratic source.
Leahy “has tried to meet with Reid several times” about Byrd’s chairmanship, according to another source.
Poor old Robert Byrd has been having a few physical problems of late. At age 90 he doesn’t heal as fast as some of us younger whipper snappers. And indeed he doesn’t have that same fire that he once had. I don’t know any 90 year olds that do. But still it is not an excuse for Pat Leahy to go behind his ailing back and attempt to subvert the Senate rules so that Leahy can chair a very powerful committee that is rightfully Byrd’s. It is disgusting and immoral for Leahy to demonstrate not only a disregard for Senate rules but also of the normal unwritten and unspoken human rules that cause us to respect our elders and help them when they become ill. But then again, he does endorse Obama who had no problem at all throwing his 85 year old grandma under the bus. I guess they are like two peas in a pod.
Leahy has been around long enough to know what the rules of the Senate are. And Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii is next in line to chair the committee should Byrd retire. So it has to be mental illness that is causing Leahy to take these actions. Come to think of it, take a look at the picture of Leahy up above. Doesn’t he remind you of Uncle Fester from the Addams Family? Can’t you just see a light bulb coming out of his mouth. I mean seriously, Pat Leahy is losing his mind.
