A sign of the times?

A friend sent me a link to this delightful video that recalls an innocence that belongs to a different era, when there was less cynicism around. The popularity of this video, along with the astounding impact of singer Susan Boyle on “Britiain’s Got Talent”, suggest a possible wind change in the general zeitgeist, perhaps brought on by the worldwide recession.

With all the pretentious nonsense that has been forced down our throats the past quarter century by the cultural fashionistas, I am hoping the spirit captured on these videos will catch on.

I wish I could have been there when these people at Antwerp railway station in Belgium suddenly began to erupt into dance to the tune of “Do Re Mi” from “The Sound of Music”. But at least I have seen the video (five times now). Even though it was staged to promote a production of the musical, I still find something very liberating and joyous in it, and obviously many other people do too.

The video has already received more than a million hits and I am sending it to everyone I know.

  • I’mFedUp

Thank you for these. I saw them both recently. I have seen the Susan Boyle video 6 times, and today believe it or not, the hard rock and roll radio station in LA played the whole segment from the show. I cry every time I see this. It speaks to the best and worst of humanity. The best being the voice we all have inside of us, the worst being our cynicism about the outside of a person vs. the inside. Can you BELIEVE how many hits that video has? Last time I checked, it was 9 Million in just 5 days.

  • Patrick Henry

Hey Grumpy…so good to see you back..Rollling as Usual My Friend..

    Regards

  • I’mFedUp

I posted about this, but it went to the spin cycle. I’ve seen both of these, the Susan Boyle vid 6 times. Makes you cry. Thanks Grumpy for sharing.

  • pm317

Well, think about how her life would have been different if someone had noticed her talent when she was say 12. I hope she gets some good opportunities now.

  • I’mFedUp

Here is Susan Boyle singing Cry Me A River in 1999…she’s amazing. Really. And now she’s going on Oprah. She’s apparently not much of a dater, so she’s going on the British “Dating Game” and she’s was on the Morning Show, etc. Good for her. By the way, just ONE of the Youtube versions of the British show has over 16 MILLION hits in 5 days. Wow.

… a possible wind change in the general zeitgeist…

One can only hope, Grumpy. Alas, they don’t erase the stain of all those crass “teabagging” cracks on MSNBC and CNN.

  • I’mFedUp

UBM…there’s hope for you yet. I’m sure that you of all people are having a hard time with the “teabagging” nonsense. For the second time in my adult life, I agree with you. WTF is that about

  • http://undercoverblackman.blogspot.com Undercover Black Man

Can’t we all just get a Long Island ice tea?

    ;-)

  • I’mFedUp

    Yup, I’ll even buy

  • leslie

    Hey Ferd~
You beat me to it. I had fully intended to enter the link to “Cry Me a River” just now! It is fantastic. And her voice! OMG.

At last count there have been more than 2 million hits at youtube! Wow is right.

  • I’mFedUp

LOL Leslie…I’m not Ferd but I sure do adore that fabulous man.

  • leslie

    I thought I’d written 23 million hits!
    My typing does just s*ck

I loove this train station video. It’s a celebration. I’m so happy to have found it again. Thank you.

  • elise

Thanks for posting this link, Fed Up. It is so beautiful. And thanks to you OGG. The video is wonderful.

  • I’mFedUp

Yeah, elise, great huh? In these times, something like this is sooo important to us. I hope this woman experiences the miracles she sooo deserves. That’s what’s great about Democracy and the fact that anyone, anyone can be a “star” if they just don’t lose sight of their dreams. We need to remember that here in the US as well

  • http://deleted Buzz Latte

Great! – to the Cry Me a River/Susan Boyle suggestion. It’s now on You-tube along with Susan’s stellar performance last Saturday.

Honestly, Susan’s performances have brought tears to everyone’s eyes in our household.

Glad to see you’re back, Grumpy! Agreed: Let’s hope the purity of Susan will continue to soften the world’s heart.

PS: Isn’t there another video they did in London like the one you posted? I know I’ve seen another one. I’ll try to find it.

  • TeakwoodKite

UBM, I will buy a round… after I pick my jaw up off the floor.

The ridicule the audience showed this person was sad. No respect.

So when she sang, it was like something out of Shaw Shank redemtion.

for those few seconds they were free.

  • I’mFedUp

Okay…I had to do it…this is another really fun one…

Sign Of The Times – Petula Clark

Buzz, that’s awesome. One of my favorite songs is that Pussycat Dolls song…LOL…and then the “Get Down On It” song…so fun. This is all making me feel so much better. Not a great 87 days so far LOL.

  • socalannie

Lovely video. Missed you around here lately, glad to see you back Grumps!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhXA3fXpCFk Woman Voter

So nice to see true talent and less bumping and grinding that is passed of as talent these days. Go Susan Go! She is angelic and most delightfully humble which is also in short supply these days.

  • I’mFedUp

Okay I watched it AGAIN…OMG…I’m crying again. This is what life is about. Not the freaks like Pelosi and Obama who are nothing but angry, destructive, hater pieces of crap. By the way, I couldn’t get from the link above to the BGT vid. Here it is if you can’t either…

More than ever, Fed Up. Her voice gives me chills.

  • I’mFedUp

We have to remember that this stuff only happens BECAUSE of America. My ex husband is from the UK. He was born the son of a cop, and therefore he would have been in that class for all of his life. The fact that our influence across the globe has made it okay for people to transcend the class they were born into, and rise above it, has nothing to do with anything other than America. We should be proud of that.

  • viking

    Grumpy-

So very glad to see you back again! I have greatly missed your civilized cultural offerings. This is another great example. Back when I first saw it I was delightedly dumbstruck. Nor did I care that it was staged. If anything, realizing as the piece went on that it was staged was even more of an inspiration for me, they planned to deliver unexpected joy and and jubilation. Terrific!

  • trixta

I haven’t watched Oprah since she endorsed Obama, but I will watch to hear this beautiful voice from what looks like a lovely soul.

Also, the Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks, Grumpy for the video.

  • kat in your hat

Thank you for posting these good-feeling vids, OGG.

    Missed you. :)

  • Diana

Susan Boyle is inspiring. I am truly in awe of that wonderful woman. Beautiful voice. I can’t listen to her without shedding a tear. I let my husband listen to her today and he had to walk out of the room toward the end.

This is another wonderful video that really touches your heart. Thank you Grumpy Guy for posting it.

  • Diana

WOW! Just wow, she is so amazing, this is just as beautiful as the one on youtube. I can’t wait till someone signs her and she makes her first CD I’m going to be waiting in line the first day. Thank you FedUp for sharing that link. I would love to hear her and Josh Groban do a duet.

  • http://www.dcmediagirl.com DCMediagirl

That’s what’s great about Democracy and the fact that anyone, anyone can be a “star” if they just don’t lose sight of their dreams.

Nice thought but not true. I know too many brilliant, talented people, multiple award winners, who are out of work and about to lose their homes. Don’t count luck out as a reason for why some wind up on top and stay there. And I fail to see what America has to do with Susan Boyle being blessed with that angelic voice or with the fact that she was recognized on a game show. I suspect she’s going to win the competition, and I’ll be celebrating if and when she does.

  • wodiej

Thank you, thank you, thank you…awesome, absolutely love it!!

The Sound of Music is my all time favorite movie. Susan Boyle is wonderful too! It’s nice to have see some good stuff for a change.

  • wodiej

girl, that is exactly right…this is what life is about! We have to deal w Pelosi, Reid,Dodd, Obama crap now and then but stuff like this is what we’re fightin’ for!!

  • Linda Anselmi

    Thank you OGG -

What a wonderful greeting this morning. I laughed, I cried. More please.

  • wodiej

    Love Petula Clark too!

  • kat in your hat

oh, I meant “feel good” lol. I woke up way too early today.

    TGIF!

    :D

  • basil

That made me tear up, too, just like the Susan Boyle clip.

It reminds me of one of the ‘good’ times I had teaching music in an inner city school.

Every March I would do Irish music month and would often show portions of Riverdance.

Without exception, the kids, (all AA and hispanic) would go wild and BEG to be allowed to try the steps.

I could always be sure of orderly, under-control classes on those days as the kids were so eager to sing Irish songs like The Unicorn and the Rattlin Bog and I could hold it over their heads that they wouldn’t be allowed to dance unless they behaved.

The most poignant moments were with the Special Ed classes. Those kids seemed to have a special affinity for art and music and watching them try to imitate the stepdance moves was both incredibly funny and incredibly touching, just like the Susan Boyle clip.

  • Arabella Trefoil

    I love Petula Clark too!

I’ve been humming Georgie Girl lately. (I forget which group did that one.) Is Brit pop rock the cure for the blahs?

  • arran

I saw the Antwerp station group dance a few days ago and had to replay it as it’s a spirits’ lifter.

Susan Boyle has an amazingly beautiful voice. I’d like to tell her NOT to go for the make-over. I like her just as she is.

  • wodiej

The Seekers sang Georgy Girl? I think….Love that song too.

  • Arabella Trefoil

Yes! The Seekers. Good times, those were.

  • OldCoastie

Susan Boyle is the exact opposite of Obama – without pretense, natural and full of God given talent.

    More please. I like it.

  • Old Grumpy Guy

It was over 18 million when I looked this morning

  • Old Grumpy Guy

Thanks (and to the others) for the warm welcome

  • Old Grumpy Guy

Everybody I know has been moved to tears by Susan Boyle

  • Portia Elizabeth

I don’t think anyone is implying that America has anything at all to do with Susan’s gifted voice. My take was that it represents that we in the US are blessed to live in a country where people have a good chance to live their dreams.

  • I’mFedUp

DCMediaGirl…I try to make a nice comment about America and our opportunities…sheesh. Portia is right…all I meant was that America has always been unique as far as people coming from poverty and unfortunate circumstances, and then making seven figures as an NBA star, etc. I’m proud of my country and the fact that anyone can prosper. That was the point. A point that is going to go away really soon under Obama. So I’m clinging to it. Sorry you misunderstood my intent but it was just an attempt at patriotism.

  • Portia Elizabeth

Thank you so much for posting these vids, Grumpy Guy!
I’ve watched both multiple times because they are so uplifting and joyous.

(Is anybody in Belgium accusing those people of being organized by right-wing conspiracists?)

  • Portia Elizabeth

Fed Up — thank you for the link! What an amazing voice Susan Boyle has! I’ll be among the first to buy her CD when it comes out, as I’m sure it will.

  • trixta

In the film, the Van Trapp family escaped from the fascists … if only we could do the same here in this country.

  • Maria3

    Thank you for the smile:)!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ellen D

    Nice comment I’mFedUp.
Unfortunately the lower class kids from Liverpool and the cockney Michael Caine didn’t eliminate this class thinking in the 60′s. Time for another round, I hope.

  • Ellen D

    Missed you Grumpy.
Thanks for another tear inducing video. All of this reminds us of how much we have lost when music turned into top-model dance routines with overdubbed voices and young punks shouting rhymed obscenities.
Oh for real Broadway musicals celebrating life with singable songs that we can feel a part of.

  • mary

    I’m Fed Up

I just viewed the Susan Boyle hit and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Over 20 million hits…Her voice made me stop and almost cry. She was taking care of her elderly mom till she died last year and promised her mother to do something with her voice–that pure gold she has inside. But it irked me to no end when I saw that shallow too-gay fashionista Simon Callow roll his eyes together with these teenaged cynical nymphettes we call “teenage girls”(?) who made contemptuous faces when they saw a plump, middle aged, fashion-unadorned sturdy woman dare to sing!
Susan Boyle may be the one to tell the gay men who run the Fashion industry to take a hike. Women are not transvestites out on the make!…Enough! More WOMEN FASHION DESIGNERS….Women politicians….
We need to be in control of these gay and/or patriarchal fashion-and-culture-shaping poisons that are destroying our society.

A big THANKS to Grumpy Guy for this amazing vid. and a thank you to pure, unadorned caretaker-with-a-voice-of-gold…Susan Boyle.

Victor Hugo’s Les Miserable, at last, got it fitting voice!!!!Amen and down with Cynicism!.

  • mary

    Old Grumpy Spontaneous Civilized Guy

I still watch your “YouTube classics” But I now admire your assault on Cynicism! That’s the secret to gain back our sanity and vids of Susan Boyle and the Antwerp Belgian station incredible performance are welcomed like a breath of fresh air….Immanuel Kant said that two things make him marvel….the world inside him and the starry heaven above (can’t remember it exactly as it was 2 decades ago I read this)! Well, the caretaker-now-phenomenon Susan Boyle is a marvel inside out! Victor Hugo’s masterpiece has found its voice!…Thank you.

  • http://noquarter foxyladi14

it.s her time to shine.she is amazing.just love her.

  • Diana L. C.

    OGG,

Thanks for the post today–happy to see one from you again. And these are just awesome! We’ve been getting cold wet snow here all day–the middle of April, but that’s Colorado for you. I came back to watch these several times today to forget about the wet snow and the three times I had to mop the sun porch because my dog kids had to go in and out.

Still snowing, but I’m smiling from watching these again.

  • http://www.marklevinshow.com Seattle Moss

Susan Boyle is one of those great moments in life.
I have never judged a book by it’s cover and always look for the inner love in people.
When I watched that video I was amazed and it really brought tears to my eyes.

I don’t want Susan to change a thing. She is beautiful in her own special way.

Obama was liked for his appearance and speeches. When you look in side there is no morality or love for country. The folks that voted for Obama made a big mistake that will effect us for the rest of days..
Thank you Susan for showing the obot idol worshipers what beauty is all about.
