Finally Catching On?

I know some are convinced that I’m a Republican mole conducting advance force operations against Barack Obama, which, in their view, explains my persistent criticism of the presidential aspirant starting in December. Not so. Just call Susan UnPC and me prescient political analysts. We saw early on that Barack has serious chinks in his political armor that Republicans will effectively exploit should he be the nominee. Well lookee here. Some in the Main Stream Media are starting to catch on. Check out the latest from John Harris and Jim VandeHei. Nothing new for those who have been reading this blog. In fact, looks like they’ve been copying us. We have been sounding these warning for the last four months.

Barack may one day be a viable presidential candidate. He needs seasoning. He needs more experience working foreign policy and economic issues. He needs to put firm distance between himself and the radical politics of Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, and Rashid Khalidi. And he has to purge his campaign coffers of every taint of corruption (call it the Rezko effect). But he has not yet accomplished any of these tasks.

And to make matters worse, his political tin ear remains intact. His latest pandering to the wealthy in Marin California, where he disparaged the bitter church-going, gun-toting folks of Pennsylvania, is but another example that he is not politically plugged in to the average American. The Harris/VandeHei post is a new piece of evidence that suggests the worm is starting to turn on Obama.

Of course, it’s also that part of it is Operation Blame Hillary, to be unveiled next November: If only Hillary and her minions (like Larry) had not pointed out all of Obama’s obvious flaws, the Republicans would not have had a clue how to combat him and he would have ridden to victory. An experienced politician would know better then to try and steriotype people. They would tread very lightly. It’s way too easy to offend people.

But since Obama has taken it upon himself to label me in so many ways, I have one for him. He is like one of those know it all teen agers who thinks everybody else is just stupid. Not much you can do with that kind of arrogance except wait for them to fall on their face.

I totally agree with this post. Hillary has the experience, seasoning and platform to be an excellent President at this time.

Obama needs more experience. He’s too green and inexperienced for the job at this time. Talk can only get you so far, no matter how good or persuasive a speaker you are.

It’s a dangerous world. Hillary was called an alarmist for saying that she was ready on Day One and for the 3AM phone call ad but you never know what’s going to happen or when. Has everyone forgotten the lessons of 9/11 already? Better to be safe than sorry.

I also think that Hillary has more of a feel for grass roots values. Obama really is an elitist who connects with those like him, the so-called latte liberals.

And lastly, every election of my life I’ve heard those terms “hope” and “change”. It’s just politco-speak to get elected and doesn’t really resonate with me. Been there, done that.

I resent the ruling class, when will it end? Have you been watching the Adams series? I read the book as well. These few people were true statesmen, all the while having their own agendas, except for Adams, I believe. The difference for awhile, seemed to be, that you cannot allow a ruling class. The only problem with this statement is that neither your or Susan have put any effort into looking at or discussing the “chinks in the armor” that Hillary has that you KNOW the republicans will equally attack and exploit.

As I’ve said before – both candidates are merely job applicants, and it’s up to us the voters to weight their strengths and weaknesses and make a decision. What I’ve seen coming from sites that pander to either dem candidate started as mindless cheerleading for their choice and has devolved to mindless demonization of the opposition and their supporters – not a lot of consideration and examination of both candidates and a nuetral judgement of the individuals merit.

I think you´re the non-sensical one that really doesn´t know their candidate. Hillary is the sloppy one 80% of the bills she brought up don´t even have sponsers…she thinks we´re stupid stuffing in bills that no one will sign onto because they´re just there to pad her stats. Anyone who has been around politics, and is honest, realizes that there are a lot of reasons why a Senator votes one way or another on bills or misses votes. However an examination of the bills that each of these Senators cared enough about to author and introduce revealed much to me: what they care about, what their priorities are, how they tackle problems. And the list of co-sponsors showed something about how they lead, inspire and work with others. Finally, looking at which bills actually passed is pretty indicative of how effective each would be at getting things done.
Let’s all be honest here. It is damn hard to get anything through Congress these days. And Obama and Clinton care about the same issues and have obviously worked together on a lot of legislation, whatever Sen. Clinton’s campaign may imply. She is a frequent co-sponsor on his bills, and he on hers. They are both completely competent senators.

About 40% of her bills dealt with health care and/or kids. But curiously, her big bill to deliver health care to every child, the one she lauds on her website, S.895 : “A bill to amend titles XIX and XXI of the Social Security Act to ensure that every child in the United States has access to affordable, quality health insurance coverage, and for other purposes” had not a single co-sponsor. Not one, according to the Library of Congress. Why is that? Is it a bad bill? Or is she not able to recruit support for her signature issue? Or did she just submit it simply to put in the hopper, so to speak, so she could claim she was working on it. I honestly don’t know the answer, but I find it curious and suspicious that not even Ted Kennedy co-sponsored it. Its sister bill in the house, H.R. 1535, introduced by John Dingell has 42 co-sponsors. It’s just weird. I honestly don’t know what to make of it.

The GOP is all ready hammering two freshman Congressmen from Pennsylvania, Jason Altmire 4th District and Christopher Carney 10th District. They are both superdelegates that have not endorsed as yet.

“It’s time for Congressman Chris Carney to step up and denounce Barack Obama’s condescending attitude about families who live in small towns and who hold a viewpoint other than Obama’s,” NRCC Spokesman Ken Spain said in a Saturday statement that echoed one aimed at Altmire a day earlier.

The Republican line of attack did not end there. By the middle of the afternoon, releases had been put out targeting lawmakers whose states have already voted but who have not committed in the presidential race.
“Senator Obama already had a problem connecting with rural and small town voters and now we know why. Democrats should be prepared to take a position in this presidential contest or prepare to have their hand forced,” Spain told CQ Politics on Saturday afternoon. “Voters in Pennsylvania and in states like Indiana and North Carolina deserve to know if their Democrat representative is willing to tolerate these kind of insults to their constituents’ culture and religion.”

Of course, that assertion just hold true, at least not here in Texas. I don’t have the link at hand, but I read that the percentage of people who voted for both the presidential candidate of choice AND the other state/local positions was significantly lower among those who chose Obama.

That is, those who voted Obama, ONLY voted Obama and not for the party.

And I’ll add that in my district, there were a number of Hispanic candidates. I can’t help but wonder if Obama voters avoided voting because of “those other people who don’t look like us.” Makes me wonder…

It is good that you highlighted this — but people worrying about Obama’s performance in the GE actually damage the meme that this Democratic primary is not yet over.

Of the points made in the politico piece, while I think they get the two themes correct, but both can be addressed by the Obama campaign:
1. WRT> his coalition being small — depends ultimately on how he treats voters who voted for and still prefer Senator Clinton. I don’t think there has been a serious analysis of how this will shift in the coming months, esp. with a weakening economy and energy prices making it into everyone’s budgets.
2. WRT> how he will fare against the Republican campaign — I actually think this is Obama’s strength. He has proven adept at deflection, and using echo-chamber words such as hope and change to combat fear, uncertainty and doubt.

But your piece gets it right. He’ll never be able to make up for his lack of experience in time, and there are lots of voters who are plain turned off by his campaign’s ruthlessness and emptiness. Bill Clinton was successful because he w/ the DLC moved the party toward the center, and it will be interesting to see if a “pretend progressive” (see Kate Harding’s post) and a pol who seems to have not made up his mind on several critical issues yet will be able to appeal to a large mass. Some people will eventually ask “what will an Obama presidency look like”, but ultimately it will come down to “do I trust this man”?

and you have made it with the appropriate qualifier that he may very well be a strong democratic presidential candidate some time in the future

- when he has more experience and

- when the public knows him well enough not to be shocked by some revelation or other about his “persona” , as would certainly be the case in this general election.

harris and venderhei are not reporters i trust in general, but it has certainly occurred to me that clinton might very well be doing exactly what politico’s story says she is doing -

trying to stave of a democratic disaster caused essentially by the obama campaign gaming the democratic primary system, screaming foul on every other play in the game, and stampeding democratic voters in obama’s direction with abundant help form the national media.

However…

Look, I can’t speak for everyone opposed to what I consider to be a silly set of postings here which play pin-the-tail-on-the-pastor or the rest of the straw-grasping– and you know what I’m talking about– but I do know this:

As an intelligence professional, you were educated to be a servant of truth, not politics.

The current Presidential administration’s disdain for the truth is absolutely central to the case to be made for what’s wrong with the country right now.

I wonder if post-9/11 America is actually ready to elect any President and oddly, it does not seem at all the case that ‘post 9/11 America’ is a major focal point of the candidates.

I suppose the candidates do not want to campaign on an issue that voters do not want to be reminded of or perhaps they do not want to confront what could be construed as Pandora’s Box i.e. a post-9/11 American paranoia.

Have the candidates thought about this issue?

Have they thought about the proof e.g. an emphatic call for increased security and the trend toward isolationism via, in particular, Bush Administration privatization?

So, why don’t have candidates have the answers that constitutes what Carter is actually DOING?

Larry is probably right about Barak Obama’s lack of foreign affairs experience. However, I am still waiting from a release from the clutches of what is politically correct. I am waiting for innovation, vision and hope from the candidates e.g. how about an American Department of Peacebuilding or an UN resolution for a global peacebuilding initiative?

This is a very good point. The fields in Shanksville, PA — not a particularly large city — were the final resting place for the heroes on United Flight 93. So it struck me — and I don’t live in Pennsylvania but rather in nearby Ohio — as patently anti patritiotic and insensitive to a fault. But it is in keeping with the garbage that he has listened to apparently without much question in his church in Chicago. If you see “white America” as Reverand White does, then the impersonal “they” discussion is not that much of a leap. Where I can’t agree with Larry is that there is somehow time and experience that Obama can add that will change or add to his slim resume and defeatist view of Americans who are unlike himself. I just don’t see it.

First let me emphatically state that there is just no way this statment could be remotely true:

If anything, I am firmly convinced that first and foremost you are one of the very RARE real American patriots. While you may personally not get all you wish for in an election, you are also superbly well-trained and dedicated to your country. I believe would publicly remain pretty much neutral, unless there were very real and compelling reasons for speaking out. The very fact that you are allowing your site to promote facts in this election year, tells me much, and has inspired me to dig even deeper than I normally would.

If you recall, way back in December, I was NOT a Hillary supporter. However as a New Hampshirite, I do have a strong sense of fairness and right and wrong. Until about the end of January I did feel as you state:

This in spite of the facts he had a bunch of rowdies invade our state, deliberately violated two laws with his robo-calls, insituted “vote buying” among our youth, and left a mountain of trash, which, from Central NH north, is just becoming visibile as the snow melts. So I do not expect “perfection” from out of state candidates. Our standards are obviously much higher for in-state officals.

However I am now convinced to the core of my being that Obama is central to the biggest international money laundering and fraud schemes ever known. And yes the mystery intigues me, which is why, and others on this site continue to search.

On a domestic front, the issues that have firmly put me personally in the NO WAY IN HELL camp, are the viscious attacks on Geraldine Ferraro for saying exactly the same thing Obama said in 2005, his allowing LAWS to be broken in this case and his unbelievable attacks against Mayor Nutter which I am convinced rise to the level of terroist acts, his constant use of the race-card and mysogyny. Wright and the other garbage is just frosting on a very putrid pile.

For me, and many of us, your site is a graduate level seminar, which enlightens and teaches us to think in different ways. At times you generously post, as you did above, something to reach the “saner” Obamzoids.

Character is the first and foremost criteria for me in any Presidential Candidate. Obama, as I have learned, is totally morally and ethically bankrupt, with NO redeeming attributes. Hillary’s strength in the face of the dirtiest and most viscous campaign I have experienced, in 40 years of adulthood, has won me completely over to her side. Hillary also will give me some of what I would like to see in governance as well as policy.

So while you may persist in trying to reach the less intelligent, I am DONE. In fact, let me pointedly state two things.

If Obama is anywhere slated for an executive position, I will NOT vote Democrat for the very first time in my life. My conscience and own values preclude any sort of compromise at this point.

And the second reason is fairly straightforward. We all choose to live in whatever neighborhood for the quality of life it offers. I am no different. If any Obamazoids come into my neighborhood, you can bet the bank, I WILL have them picked up by the police. Further, if they leave anymore trash, I have enough people I know to ensure that the “rule of law” shall be fully applied.

Lastly, my enduring gratitude for you and Susan being the people of Character that you are, and for the opportunities provided by this fantastic site. Thank You sounds trite – but there are not adequate words in English to express the depth of gratitude.

Larry, if you were a Republican (and I’ve always gotten the impression that, if anything, you’re an independent–at least, up until the 2008 primary season), you would zip up and watch the Democrats walk off that cliff with Obama!

It was a little disconcerting to me early on that so many conservatives spoke so highly about Barack Obama. For instance, David Brooks may really want a Democrat winning in November, but that seems pretty strange from one of the New York Times resident conservatives. Like many of the other conservatives who have rallied around Obama, “concern troll” Brooks seems to believe that Hillary Clinton has “too much baggage” to win in November. Call me cynical, but I just do not believe that all these conservative “concern trolls” are suddently interested in seeing a Democrat in the White House. And all that “baggage” that Clinton is carrying around is accompanied by the reality that people were doing MUCH better when Bill Clinton was president than they have ever done under George W. Bush! Add to that the fact that there is little that the GOP can throw out about Hillary Clinton that will be “new dirt”. Sadly, we seem to be finding out “new dirt” about Barack Obama every single day, and the GOP has not even gotten their slime machine geared up yet!

I am one of those Democrats who really resisted supporting Hillary Clinton because I feared the baggage that she was carrying as well as the sexist bigotry in this country. In addition, I must admit that I was a little disenchanted with some of the things that Bill Clinton did while in office–from Bill Clinton’s failure to achieve any meaningful healthcare reform to Clinton eventually signing onto fairly punitive welfare reform. My first choice was always John Edwards, and when it became increasingly clear that Edwards was not a realistic choice, I was actually leaning toward Obama. (Like Kevin Phillips, I do not care for these political dynasties.) But instead of reflexively choosing the viable “anti-Clinton” candidate, I actually listened to the debates and read the proposals of BOTH candidates (Clinton and Obama). So I actually came to support Hillary Clinton somewhat reluctantly, but she really won me over! Clinton has outperformed Obama in EVERY SINGLE debate, and her proposals are far more thoughtful, substantive proposals for change than Obama’s.

I can certainly understand the anger that many liberal Democrats harbor toward Hillary Clinton over her vote on Iraq (and that abominable bankruptcy bill in 2001 as well). But I must admit that it is hard for me to comprehend how ANY thoughtful Democrat could read the respective proposals from the Clinton and Obama campaigns and follow the debates, and yet, follow Obama like sheep to a slaughter! I will give Obama his props for his massive organizational skills in building such a large, grassroots movement for his campaign. But it’s going to take more than grassroots organization and massive fundraising to deal with the “baggage problem” that Obama seems to have accumulated.

i enjoyed your post. but i don’t think you can give obama credit for managing much of anything. that is being done by others just like with bush. what is their reason? money and power of course. some of them have shown up it seems! some of the so called “dim” leadership who fear and hate clinton power. perhaps some corporations like insurance companies are supplying funds because barry “understands” them.

I don’t think time will make Obama a viable candidate. What will change? He came this far by using his skill set of disabling his opponents and running a one person race. This doesn’t even touch on the fact that he has some political and business relationships that show his lack of foresight and judgement. I personally would not ever vote for him. He has sullied his chances by being arrogant, selfish and stupid in his associations. I just don’t understand how he can “grow” from all of this baggage. I still laugh so loudly at the thought that he will EVENTUALLY unite us Democrats/Independents. HOW? By magic?

Today Wolf Blitzer said Obama had humble orogins. I emailed to ask what he thought was humble about having college educated parents, living with a grandmother who was a VP of a large bank, going to the most elite, expensive prep school in the state of Hawaii, then on to elite Ivy League univerities.

The articles mentions that there could be the fear of riots if Obama doesn’t win the nomination. Well, what does that say about Obama’s supporters? There are thugs among them.
