Obama Surrogate Tom Daschle Lectures Philadelphia Mayor Nutter on the People in his State [Two Updates]

Question of the Week: Are Barack Obama’s demeaning labels of white Pennsylvanian voters eventually going to be remembered as his “Macaca Moment”? Now, here’s the video of Tom Daschle — from South Dakota and now an inside-the-Beltway D.C. lobbyist — lecturing Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter about the people of the state of Pennsylvania:

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter has been one of Hillary Clinton’s most staunch and effective surrogates in Pennsylvania. He is a highly able mayor and leader, which makes former senator Tom Daschle’s treatment of Mayor Nutter today, from my viewpoint, particularly condescending and presumptuous. Here’s one portion of the transcript that infuriated me — you’ll hear the remarks about half way through the above video of the interview this morning on Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace:

WALLACE: Senator Daschle, Obama already had a problem reaching out to white working-class Democrats, the so-called Reagan Democrats. Aren’t these comments going to make it even harder?

DASCHLE: Just the opposite, Chris. I really think Mayor Nutter ought to go to his own emergency room. He ought to go to the unemployment lines today in Philadelphia where people are standing in line without the hope of a good job.

They ought to worry about the jobs being displaced and being sent overseas. You know, obviously, people are — want to be hopeful, and that’s really the message of the Obama campaign, why the Obama campaign has such traction, because he talks about hope.

But you know, if things are so rosy, why change? Let’s just have a third Bush administration. That’s really what…

    How dare Daschle, from South Dakota, lecture Mayor Nutter on his own City and State? And frankly, how dare he attack another Democrat by saying that she’d be another Bush? So Daschle is going the Nader route? You know, the nuclear option that a vote for Hillary (Gore 2000) would be a vote for Bush (Bush 2000.)

    No, Mr. Dashcle, HIGHLY PAID LOBBYIST, a vote for Obama would be a vote for another Bush term (McCain 2008) because he cannot beat McCain.

Perhaps the most notable of these was L-3 International, makers of an airport x-ray security machine which the U.S. Department of Transportation was forced to buy in large quantities despite it being declared ineffective by the department’s Inspector General and on at least one occasion leaking dangerous amounts of radiation.       He’s a popular mayor in one of the most difficult cities to run. I moved to Philly to go to school about 2 weeks after Mayor Rizzo bombed 1 house and 6 city blocks burned to get rid of MOVE, 3 weeks into a garbage strike where the garbage was piled up 9 ft on the sidwalks, and during the coldest winter to hit the city in decades 15000 mentally ill patients were given a bus ticket to either Philly or Harrisburg because St. Reagan and acolyte GHWB had cut federal funding to mental hospitals. There was a purge of the mafia with the arest of Scarfo and there was a serial killer on the loose in North Philly. Sen. Daschle don’t know dick about governing a city like Philly. I grew to love the city and the state. One thing I could guess, OBAMESSIAH would not be able to cut it in a city like Philly and Nutter knows it. Rendell know it. They are effective politicians doing a hard job in a hard state. To them he is a candy ass.

      Precisely Uppity, as I said above, I’ve got two words for Tom Daschle, “Jim Thune”.

      And trust me I know South Dakota pretty good. I have roots up there that are historic.

      My family settled in Michigan first when they came from Bohemia. They then moved over to South Dakota and were given land by deed under Grover Cleveland. They established much of what is now Chamberland SD and still live in the Brule Co. area and surrounding counties. They have worked that land for 8 generations and are fairly conservative.

      Daschle is a lot like Harry Reid, smug liberal assholes in glowing shiny face Politically Correct bullshit. No freaking backbone, no real charisma, and certainly no leader.

      Let’s remind ourselves that he went from being the Senate Majority Leader to a hasbeen that had to scrub his run at the Presidency because he knew the response before he started, “go home Daschle”.

      Maybe he’ll spend his remaining days hunting pheasants, a popular sport in the fall in South Dakota.

      I just listened to this video.
      My first thought is that I admire Mr. Nutter very much. Geez, now there is a man I could vote for!

      Second, Mr. Daschle, who has his ass in South Dakota was very condescending to Mr. Nutter when he instructed Mr. Nutter to visit some emergency rooms within his city, etc. It’s just another example of an elitist attacking someone that he can’t even begin to relate to.

      Third, I did hear the “Mayor Nutty” comment at 2:59 in the video. I would call that a Freudian slip if there ever was one! Sorry Mr. Daschle if someone with the high intelligence of Mr. Nutter disagrees with you!

    Oh.. and I was going to comment on what a courageous guy Mayor Nutter is (which he is.) Then I realized how freakin’ sad it is that we have to think in those terms about a Mayor of a US city, or a Rep. from any of our States, etc, who chooses to support Hillary Clinton. All because they do not have the same color of skin as Hillary. Think about it. It’s heartbreaking that it’s come to that.

            When I used to walk to campus early in the morning, there was a guy who practiced Bag pipes in full regalia once a week at that little park right before Locust walk. I miss watching the sculling on the river, That great Jewsh Deli on Locust walk where the uncle who was 109 yrs. old corrected your order for you cause you didn’t know how to order proper….I miss Fall in Philly when the city is so beautiful…Redding Terminal…South Street…White Dog Cafe…Le Bus and those incredible salads…Philly pizza…Bookbinders…When I went to school there City Hall was under renovation…I still have my FREE WILLY PENN FROM BONDAGE T-SHIRT…Thanks, it’s nice to hear some nice shit about Philly.     I found Daschele contentious and argumentative. I cannot for the life of me find anything “distorted” in what Mayor Nutter said about the comments made by Senator Obama and he was insulting to the Mayor. Apparently the decision has been made not to apoologize but rather to yell that Obama is right and everyone else is wrong. I am curious to see how well that works. Pennsylvania will be a good first look at what I believe is wishful thinking substituted for good political thinking. Perhaps candidate Obama is not interested in an apology to the voters and so by just spinning that once again, it is somehow our “fault,” he thinks he can weedle his way out of this has he did with the lies he spoke with regard to hearing questionable sermons at the feet of Reverand Wright.

    TOM DASCHLE, FORMER U.S. SENATOR: Well, Chris, first of all, you’ve got to remember that this is a man who was raised by a single mother, who chose — who volunteered to work in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Chicago, who spent his whole life working with the disenfranchised. This is a man who understands when you go into an emergency room and you see people lined up in the hallways, there’s something wrong, who understands that we’ve got 80 percent unemployment on reservations, who understands that 81 percent of the American people think we’re on the wrong track.

    I found myself shouting at my poor laptop screen about the disenfranchised in Michigan and Florida …but of course, that is “different.” There were “rules.” I guess it is silly to ask …

      Obama was raised by his college educated mother, grandparents and step father. His mom remarried when he was young so she wasn’t single for a long time. His grandmother was a VP of a large bank. He went to the most exclusive, expensive prep school in Hawaii.
      I am sick and tired of hearing that Obama had it hard as a kid. Not that being abandoned by his father was a piece of cake, but the media tries to make it sound like he grew up economically disadvantaged which is not the case. It hides his elite background.
      This is as fake as Bush’s rancher routine which the media let slide, too. They hardly ever mentioned that Bush bought his ranch after he decided to run for president so that he could mimic Reagan. At least Reagan really could ride horses. Vincente Fox made fun of Bush in his book for being afraid of them. It was all play acting for the benefit of the media.

    the biggest problem, even bigger to my mind than his dismissive and classist remarks about PA voters is that he’s a know-it-all, and he thinks he has nothing to learn. How does this ‘moment’ square with his notion that he has nothing to learn on foreign policy? My goodness, for him Pennsylvania is apparently foreign and he hasn’t done well with his great knowledge about PA voters. In contrast to his self-appraisal I’d say that only Bush had more to learn than he, and that’s just a guess, who knows what his know-it-all attitude will create across borders. he nees a primer in listening and not jumping to negative conclusions about ‘some folks’ motivations. Hillary is not only qualified, she has a huge number of foreign policy advisors, what makes him presume that those who choose her over him must be motivated by bitterness and prejudice? His high self-esteem is only rivaled by his hubris. If he’s out nom, he’s best pick a very qualified vice president who has some empathy and some humility.

    Daschle put forth the single mother again as a credential. The correct statement would not be so supportive of the concocted BO biography. His parents married February 02, 1961. He was born August 04, 1961. His parents divorced in 1965. His mother remaried in 1967 and moved new family to Indonesia. He moved to live with his maternal grandparents in Hawaii in 1971.

    I checked sources for over an hour and never found the actual date of the second marriage. Interesting in all the sources however is a theme of general information, dates change across stories and the actual facts are difficult to find.

    I was looking at the contributors for Obama and was suprised to see a few friends of mine who are on the list, who are full blown Republicans and who have given the max for Obama, so I called one of them I know extremely well asking why did he cross the line?

    Answer was simple, he didn’t cross the line at all, Republicans have lost twice to Clinton’s, you think we want to go through that exercise again another two times? Obama is beatable and every Republican knows he is so how do you win an election, you stack the deck!

    His last comment was a real simple one, the base of the Democratic Party is eroding thanks to its leadership, you never saw the Republican leaders who are not fond at all about McCain but they never would dream of acting towards McCain like the Democratic leaders are towards Clinton!
    Add to the mix that they basically have ignored two major and importnat states in the GE and seating them after Super Delegates decide as Dean says in June is not going to turn those two states into Democratic lovers again, it will piss them off even more! Democrats are basically handing the GE to the Republicans on a silver platter. The gravy for Republicans is that Obama implodes in ways that Clinton cannot bite on, but McCain will destroy him if he makes it to the GE! He even laughed that the Democrats will likely give control back in the Senate to the Republicans as well when all is said and done!

    Daschle sure doesn’t know much about PA. Most rural Pennsylvanians, regardless of party, don’t like Philadelphia very much, and they’re the ones who were the targets of Sen. Obama’s remarks. His time might have been better spent listening to Harrisburg’s Mayor Reed and some of the other mayors of PA’s smaller cities and towns. Don’t think he would have liked what he would have heard, though.

    BTW, workingclass artist, the bomber dude was Mayor Goode, not Mayor Rizzo. Big Frank had much to answer for, but torching West Philly wasn’t part of it.

    This whole thing really works in Clinton’s favor, both in the remaining primaries and in the GE to come.

    In the GE she won’t have to face that ‘elitist’ tag that they hung on Kerry (and to a lesser extent Gore). The ‘elite’ of the Democratic party put up their candidate and Clinton defeated him. The Rethugs will have to face her without their only remaining weapons — patriotism and ‘the Dems look down their nose at you’. They’ll be left with nothing to fight with but their wonderful success in Iraq and the high-flying economy.

    A strong Clinton victory in PA will continue to deflate BO’s balloon, so expect the screams that she should quit to become overwhelming following her victory there. But the smart Dems will start the move back toward a candidate who can win in November.

But since a Philly Cheese steak resturant just opened in Hemet Ca where i live and i just had a good one. I shall return to my Phila roots and say to Daschell and Obama UP YOURS// You two would not make pimples on a smart politician’s ass. The people of Pa have always given to this country and are proud Americans. Philadelphia helped start this country. What would either Obama or Daschell even know about that.
