The true disease is international exploitation. Piracy is merely a symptom. It’s virtually a risk-free resource swap in a criminal land without any form of real government. Somalis collect up to $100 million a year from pirate ransoms and the Europeans and Asians poach $300 million a year in trawled fish from Somali waters. Piracy is an acceptable way of taxing the real hypocritical lawbreakers, and so it becomes their right.

Is Clinton going to take the ‘incentive’ out of Somali pirates by telling them to attack the fishing vessels and take them as hostage and keep the fishing vessels for their own use in feeding their people?

That was tried for 10 years and failed. Because there is no money in seizing fishing vessels that’s why. The Somali’s discovered that it is far more lucrative to take cargo vessels and hold them for ransom which the foolish countries continue to pay without doing anything to stop further attacks.

Without seriously addressing the driving factors of chronic poverty and weakness of the Somali state that has encouraged piracy in the first place these initiatives are going nowhere.

It’s a disgrace that this has been going on for as long as it has. good luck getting other nations to help, it’s always left up to the US to fight and eradicate these criminals. Most people don’t like war and violence but it is often times the only way to deal w people such as this. If it weren’t for brave men and women throughout history fighting in wars, protests (for womens rights), people in this country would not be free. What is that they say…”freedom isn’t free”….and it isn’t.

In any case, Hillary is on it. Gee, and she didn’t need a teleprompter to tell her what to say.

In case you didn’t notice Obama has already raised taxes. How? By eliminating some deductions which means you’ll have to pay more.

Hillary is the Secretary of State. Not the POTUS or head of the Treasury. Raising taxes has nothing to do with her.

Talk about grasping for straws.

Hillary Clinton explains the piracy situation well and is on the right track with her 4-point proposal. I love organized thought in communication. Obama can learn a thing or two from her.

As Larry J pointed out in one of his posts, she needed to explain that the US does not make concessions or pays ransoms to terrorists/pirates, but they will talk (“negotiate”) a way if necessary before military action can be taken.

“But let me underscore this point: The United States does not make concessions or ransom payments to pirates.”

Good. It had to be said in this way.

The issue of raising and lowering taxes isn’t something you can even quantify. But its a very good question. Hillary would approach it like she is. By getting several countries to each send ships to combat the pirates. The more armed the ships are the less chance the pirates have.

You also need to provide jobs in the areas that use piracy as a means to survive. It may take a decade or 2 to actually turn the country around.
