Pennsylvania Protesters: Obama’s Comments Offensive

“[Obama] is definitely out of touch with the voters in Pennsylvania to blaspheme them the way he did,” said Hollidaysburg resident Ted Manna [at one of five protests statewide held on Sunday by union members].

WJAC TV reports on a protest Sunday in Altoona, Pennsylvania — one of five across the state:

Protesters: Obama’s Comments Offensive

ALTOONA, Pa. — While Sen. Barack Obama said he didn’t mean to offend anyone when he made comments about small-town voters last week, voters in the Alleghenies said they may be hardworking, but not “bitter.”

At a fundraiser with donors in California last week, Obama described small-town voters, like those in Pennsylvania, as bitter. He said they’re frustrated with their own economic situation and they cling to issues like guns, religion and immigration. …

“There are a whole bunch of folks in Pennsylvania and right here in Indiana, who are bitter. They feel like they’ve been left behind,” said Obama in a town hall meeting in Indiana.

However, the local people who were protesting outside his campaign office in Altoona on Sunday said if that’s what Obama honestly thinks, then he is not their candidate. …

Manna said everyone has their own beliefs, but it shouldn’t be up to a presidential candidate to tell them their beliefs are wrong.

“All the citizens of Pennsylvania should, rightfully so, be upset that he said we hide behind our religion and our guns,” said Manna.

Joseph Antal of Ebensburg said, “With all that’s been happening in our area, and in Johnstown with the flood, we rebound back from adversity.”

The protest was organized by members of various unions in the region. A union member said there were at least five other similar protests across the state on Sunday.

Probably not in Obama’s best interest to use the term “Left Behind”, if you know what I mean.

On the other hand, “Say it again, Barry.”

    questions that I have…

Political party D is electing a new leader for the 2008 election. Candidate O disses public H in location SF with public L against issue GGG, but cannot diss them in location PA with public H without losing election.

footage of candidate O dissing public H reaches location PA.

Candidate M is comfortable with issue GGG and will use it mercilessly to defeat Candidate O among Public H in location PA.

Party D should do which of the following:

    (A)Cower
    (B)Kiss Its Ass Goodbye
    (C)Keep digging
    (D)Blame Candidate C

Remember there will be more than one correct answer, in fact all of them are potentially true. Your job is to pick the best most complete answer.

  • Mel

Obama has the gaul to even bring up that people in Washington don’t listen and that is why people are bitter?

Well excuse me Senator Obama, in what fashion did you listen when Maytag was shutting down plants in your own back yard and the unions cried out for you to step in and help them keep their jobs?

Oh forgot, you were too busy appointing James Crown (director of Maytag) to your campaign finance commitee and pocketing all the money he bundled up so nicely for you!

When Lester Crown was asked of Obama’s plea to him about saving the jobs of the Maytag workers, Lester Crown responded “the subject never came up”!

So was Senator Obama speaking from his own experiences of small towns who lost their major employers and their feelings of a politician after they found out Obama’s actions on their behalf of doing nothing and thus the folks of those destroyed towns screaming out “JC that Obama we want to Shoot him”?

  • anna shane

He can’t get his explanation straight. In today’s SF Chronicle there is a report on how angry his campaign is that some blogger sneaked into his one grand a head fundraiser, where he thought he could speak candidly and off the record. Seems to me he should be thinking about his elitist and condescending and very inaccurate opinions, not about how bad it was someone told. First he says it again, then he says he made a poor choice of words, then he says he’s sorry ‘if,’ and then he blames Hillary for causing the story, and then he edits it and demands she and the rest of us accept what he really meant to say. And then he finds some old quote from Bill Clinton and says Bill’s worse than he, and now he’s blaming the press for reporting what he’d said.

  • OxyCon

    You know what is insane?
How Obama’s cultish followers break out in applause when he again says that people in small towns are bitter.
Where’s the applause line in that?
Since when does negative comments generate rousing approval?
Yeah! Whoopie! I’m down with that! We’re bitter! Hooray for bitter people!

  • kenoshaMarge

If only Obama wasn’t so arrogant he would just say that he misspoke and move on. But not the “ONE”. He’s sorry if you were offended by what he said, not for what he said.

It is apparent he believes that the media and his Left Blogistan Trolls will once again tell all us ignorant fools W.O.R.M. while he continues to pretend it isn’t what he said that was wrong but the silly people that don’t understand what he meant to say.

Got that? It isn’t his fault. Nothing ever is. And now let the chorus of Obaman Blogtrolls begin their favorite song: “It’s All Hillary’s Fault”.

Clinton’s former SECRETARY OF LABOR – ROBERT REICH… has a few words to say…
Will you listen – or just continue your OBAMA-BASH-FEST?

    http://robertreich.blogspot.com/2008/04/obama-bitterness-meet-press-and-old.html

Excerpt …We’re heading into the worst economic crisis in a half century or more. Many of the Americans who have been getting nowhere for decades are in even deeper trouble. Large numbers of people in Pennsylvania and across the nation are losing their homes and losing their jobs, and the situation is likely to grow worse.

Consumers are at the end of their ropes, fuel and food costs are skyrocketing, they can’t go deeper into debt, they can’t pay their bills. They aren’t buying, which means every business from the auto industry to housing to even giant GE is hurting. Which means they’ll begin laying off more people, and as they do, we will experience an even more dangerous downward spiral.

Bitter? You ain’t seen nothing yet…

…Eighty percent of Americans know the nation is on the wrong track. The old politics, and the old media that feeds it, are irrelevant now.

Please read the entire article – unfortunately, this blog lately sounds too much like the “old politics” of which Robert Reich speaks.

  • Catriley

And lest we forget the subprime queen, Penny Pritzker of Superior Bank, who is a major player in his campaign. How about that phone interview with the woman who lost everything when Superior collapsed? I imagine she’s seething right now at his latest comments about the “little people”

  • Nag

Here’s another front page story dated today:
    http://tinyurl.com/6xblm4

It’s from the Scranton Times/Tribune. It’s about Hillary campaigning in Scranton yesterday and her remarks focused a lot on Obama’s big statement. Here’s the money quote:

She said Mr. Obama had gone from attacking her for raising the remarks on the campaign trail to admitting he was guilty of poor word choice to deep regret.

“But what people are looking for is an explanation. What does he really believe?” Mrs. Clinton said. “How does he see the people here in this neighborhood, throughout Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina and other places in our country?”

There’s also a video of Hillary talking about the danger of the Democrats to be labeled “elitist” yet again.

You know, in spite of the spin in the blog-O-sphere that says this is a non-issue, get over it, it’s not going away. People were insulted, deeply, by Obama’s petty little remarks. I’m pretty sure that the Democratic party doesn’t want to bring such division down on the party. Why won’t he apologize? Because he believes what he said is true? Really?

how angry his campaign is that some blogger sneaked into his one grand a head fundraiser, where he thought he could speak candidly and off the record

You know I REALLY appreciate her courage. I’ve been concerned for her since finding out how it came out.

  • Shibam8p

Obama’s remarks was so unfair to small town folks who are already struggling with loss of jobs, and with calamities.

Obama comments was worst than what Jessie Ventura’s remarks in 1999, who said that:
“Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers”.

I thought, he wants to be the President.

  • Catriley

So many words in your post, and yet somehow you manage to completely MISS the point of what made Obama’s comments completely offensive to those he chose to speak for.

I don’t need to click your link to know that economic times are hard. The folks that Obama stereotyped can tell you that.

The point, because you’ve obviously missed it, is that he said their REACTION to the bad times was “clinging to guns and religion”, and went on to describe them as bigots. Just as they don’t need a lecture from Obama, they (and we here) don’t need a lecture from you on the economy. We get it.

Not only did Obama reduce them to a ridiculous Archie Bunker stereotype to the amusement of the oh-so-urbane folks at his fundraiser house parties… he slammed (in a full-on lie) Bill Clinton’s economy at the same time.

He began his dissmissive comments with telling the fabulously fabulous people at his fundraiser that the small town people “don’t get him.” On the contrary… we “get him” alright. He’s a backstabbing snob.

  • http://www.eat4today.com katiebird

He and his rich buddies LAUGHED at voters. It’s beyond elitism — it’s the smug self-satisfaction.

It’s not a gaffe — it’s nothing you can apologize for.

When he got off his Pennsylvania Tour Bus and went to San Francisco — he deliberately set up a laugh-line for he and his friends to share.

Watch it again and cry with me.

  • scott

Forget the polls, they don’t matter.
    Barry is going down.

  • Aeon

Catriley – guess you didn’t “need to read” what Robert Reich said after all…

We humans are quite capable of walking around believing one thing — while the facts continue to prove us wrong.

Cognitive dissonance occurs when one way of “knowing” is at odds with another way of “knowing”.

WE THE PEOPLE can not fix things – unless we call it what it is - Edwards called out the Corporate owned Government and was squashed. Now we see that Obama is trying to discuss HARD TRUTHS.

Reading, discussing, and thinking about MULTIPLE OPINIONS … matters in a TRUE DEMOCRACY. Reading former LABOR SECRETARY under CLINTON — Robert Reich… matters too.

  • Nag

Don’t you understand that it was the tone of the comment? Robert Reich can bite me. Everyone knows that the economy has been circling the drain for some time now. The last thing we need in Pa is for Barak Obama to make fun of small town Pa in front of his exceptionally wealthy donors. He wasn’t trying to dissect the economic woes of the lower classes… he was trying to explain why he’s not winning in Pa to his donors. It was incredibly insulting. I grew up in small town Pa. I took retirement after 25 years of teaching. I consider myself a lifelong liberal, I honor my country, enjoy a little gardening. I don’t go to church or hunt. No one in my family has ever hunted. Obama called us a bunch of rednecked bigots who love guns and god. I’m beginning to wonder why it is that Obama keeps seeing bigots everywhere?

  • Mel

For starters, Obama is not trying to discuss HARD TRUTHS, Obama is trying to get elected POTUS on a record of do nothing!

We “THE PEOPLE” know Hillary’s plans, we agree with them and we know Obama has copied them for the most part!

As for We humans are quite capable of walking around believing one thing — while the facts continue to prove us wrong.

You tell us how Obama will fix things, when he tells tales of “bitter” small town USA, the same sorts of small towns he ignored when Maytag was closing their doors and shipping jobs away, while when Obama was asked to help by the unions, he did one thing, gathered bundled money from the directors of Maytag and said nothing about the plant closings to them?

This your saviour, hardly one to any normal thinking human being, only to ones who believe in ONE THING, even when the FACTS continue to prove you wrong!

  • John

The jackass filling in for Bill Press this morning spent several minutes telling us that Obama was “absolutely right” in his criticism of gun-and-bible-toting Pennsylvanians. Then he accused Hillary of being drunk at a fundraiser and said “lets go to a live feed of her speech”– and proceeded to play a tape of a Clinton speech slowed way down. Haha, Air America is soooooo funny- and evenhanded.

Later, Lionel played a clip of Bill Clinton talking about meeting with a hospital patient, to which Lionel interrupted “never happened. I promise you, he never met with anyone like that. Never happened.” I can promise you that neither Lionel nor any other Air America host has EVER questioned the varacity of anything Barack or Michelle Obama have ever said.

What a fucking joke that station has become. It’s all Obama-licking, all the time.

Oh and POTUS has it’s usual Monday Yucks with John Zogby, who has never even been close with most of his predictions this year. Naturally he has Clinton up by only four in PA, which I take as an excellent sign.

  • salo

    No he’s not.

Edwards anger was BAD according to the Media and the pundits.

Obama’s anger OTOH is a GOOD according to those same pundits.

It’s all very mysterious. What happened between here and Iowa?

Obama does not addres the issues, if you read the fine print he actually offers no reforms.

Teh election in November will boil down to:

McCain wanting 100,000 troops in Iraq and Obama suggesting it should be 60,000 troops in Iraq.

He can’t run on the good economy of the 1990s, he can’t run on Bosnia, Northern Ireland, he can’t even offer UHC. And he’s going to say patronizing things continously because he keeps getting away with it now. The patronizing drone and cultural baggage will infuriate moderate Republicans who previously considered voting for him.

Aeon, you’re still not getting what The One laid down. The economy’s about to hit hard, folks are nervous, small towns have eviscerated, but that’s not what Barry said that pissed everyone off and cost him any chance he had of being elected POTUS.

They cling to religion and guns and are anti-immigrant and are against free trade and they don’t like people who are different from themselves.”

Short Obama: “They are little people with little hearts and little minds.”

That’s what he said that just ended his campaign, and perhaps his career as a national politician. His spin is transparent to anyone who bothers to open their eyes or ears.

  • Mawm

    Aeon,
He wasn’t trying to give us “hard truths”. He was in no way doing anything courageous. In a setting he thought was totally private, he was telling a bunch of rich San Francisco liberals how it wasn’t his fault he was not connecting with PA voters. Instead, it is the fault of small town people who are bigotted and bitter. THe really vile thing to me was when they laughed when he said people didn’t trust him because he is a 46 you black man.

No amount of lipstick will make this pig any prettier. Start supporting Clinton or live through another 4 years of Republican rule!

  • PMS

Aeon, the power of freedom of expression is standing up for what you said, not sniggering about “the rural yokels” behind their backs to the Elites in the Bay Area, and then when your “private” comments go public, not spinning what you said so fast the NOAA has to issue a tornado warning for all of the Midwest.

Just like Randi Rhodes (ahhh… San Francisco, that toddlin’ town), it’s not a matter of “Freedom of Expression”, it’s a matter of judgment and accountability.

Interesting how he always talks bad about the “people in Washington” and he is one of them.

  • salo

    That’s what I thought.

None of what he says makes much sense.

Obama’s talking about a primary between two dems.

Democrats in that Primary are not selecting Obama or Clinton based on Guns, God and Gays.

If anything it’s the opposite–they are competing among liberal voters right now.

Obama is blowing smoke up the backside of his California donors about his flagging numbers in Penn and he’s stupidly stereotyping Penn Democrats.

My guess is that most primary voters there are self identified liberals.

  • jwrjr

But unlike Obama trolls, he doesn’t make use of that freedom.

  • beebop

And let’s not forget the lovely Mrs. Obama — or as I have begun to think of her “Thenevertobefirstlady” Obama:

“We live in isolation, and because of that isolation we fear one another.

Because Barack Obama is the only person in this race who understands that. That before we can work on the problems we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation.

Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual; uninvolved, uninformed.”

Personally..I root for whichever one of the Democrat candidates seems to be down in the polls for the moment.

I want to see the civil war go on and on..

but then.. I’m a McCain supporter.

Face it losers… both of your candidates are damaged goods…and neither was EVER a decent candidate for President.

Either one would now lose to McCain in November

It feels like an immeasurably or indefinitely long period of time just to slog through the more obvious points of your post. Would that it were that easy to explain to you what is offensive (other than you) …

Speaking ill of people not there to dispute your tormented logic in front of a large group of people predisposed to look down upon you is pretty much of a no-no. When the first group is expected to vote for you and their air waves are being infiltrated using money donated by the second group, that is really a bad idea. Does that explain it any better for you, Iceage?

    god, guns and bitterness

    (IN THAT ORDER, please):

it seems to me that the emphasis is on the wrong syl-LA-ble with respect to obama’s comments last week linking “bitterness” among small town and rural americans with “clinging” to “god” and “guns”.

obama’s profound ignorance of those americans’ lives and communities is evident in that comment.

obama says that these ameicans cling to god and guns due to bitterness at economic loss.

    not so.

god and guns were there before any one of those “bitter” folk was born.

church membership and church socializing go back genrations, to the every beginning of most of these communities.

so does gun ownership, self-defense, and hunting.

of course, if you only know these folks thru political polling, sociology articles, or movies,

you might assuume just what obama assumed (and said),

that they cling to god and guns BECAUSE they are bitter at economic.

    but you would be wrong.

    to repeat:

“god and guns were in those communities before any one of the “bitter” folk was born.

ao let’s not let obama off the hook by saying, as some of his apoligists have been desperately saying of late:

“oh, come on. some folks ARE bitter.”

    no doubt, some are.

but that has nothing to do with persistance and practice of religion or the support for gun ownership and use in samll towns and rural communities.

what obama has revealed in his silly assertion is just how ignorant he is of how americans in those communities have lived their lives for generations.

You still don’t get it do you Aeon? The point is not whether or not people are worse off now than 7 years ago (depite Obama trashing he Clinton years) but the fact that he said the people’s bitterness and frustrations make them cling to religion and guns: get it not?
We can intellectualize Reich’s article and anything else in an objective discussion about economics. But this is NOT what Obama said nor what he meant.

  • Andy

    Aeon:

Obama has every right to stereotype and demean the people of PA and IN and many other Americans (yes that’s free speech) but don’t expect those people to elect him President then. He is not “another intellectual doing a sociological comment” He is a politician running for President. Get it?
What he said is insulting and he just as he has the right to say it we have the right to judge him for those words; which as he sustains: matter, words matter.

  • Catriley

And did you notice that some people behind him were already nodding their heads when he started with his first few words… all he started to say was “people in small towns….. ” and these people are nodding their heads. Interesting how he always talks bad about the “people in Washington” and he is one of them

    There in lies his curse.

He was quite happy running scams in Chicago with Rezko and assorted Alderman and Emil. My reading leaves to believe with 20 years of spews on pews Obama goes to Washington thinking he can ride herd on the bulls in the senate. He spends time with Lieberman because Lieberman, always the opportunist, saw the freshman candy first.

Then the bulls caught whiff. Obamas’ thinking he can run scams like the ones he ran in Chicago and is punked. This serves to re-enforce the ‘New Nation of Islam’ selfish, arrogant sense of entitlement, antagonizing his childhood loneliness.
After all, the freshman senators are expected to carry water for the bulls of the Senate, but not big bootstraps Obama, he is to good for that.

He refuses to play the “game is fixed” and is lacking any self motivation that does not have something in it for him. Insult, injury and plagerism are only tools his self absorbed warp perception of reality.

Had Obama been able to relieve himself of his own self-loathing, imbued by years of percieved parental neglect, he might have had a chance.
    But now?

Really don’t mind if you sit this one out.
My words but a whisper — your deafness a SHOUT.
I may make you feel but I can’t make you think.

I’ve come down from the upper class to mend your rotten ways.
My father was a man-of-power whom everyone obeyed.
So come on all you criminals!
I’ve got to put you straight just like I did with my old man —
    twenty years too late.
Your bread and water’s going cold.
Your hair is too short and neat.
I’ll judge you all and make damn sure that no-one judges me…
