I think you completely missed the point if you thought this what the tea parties were about. Bloated, corrupt government, spending into oblivian, generational theft by both parties was what I heard the most coming from these parties.

IMHO Perry was playing to his audience. We Texans just love to talk about secession, about how we were clever enough to include that item in the deal to join the Union. We love to boast about how we could survive as a nation if we seceded because, hey, we did it already. Yeah, we love to talk big. Or just talk period.

And we love to hear that kind of “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” talk from our politicians. Nothing stirs a Texan’s blood or brings a tear to his or her eye faster than talking about why Texas is special. Because all Texans know they were blessed to be born in the Lone Star State (so don’t try to convince them otherwise).

But Texans don’t really want to secede. We’d have to give up those bragging rights if we did. And bragging is not a thing we’re ready to cede.

I agree. But focusing on what one guy said distracts from what these tea parties were really about. A LOT of people (not right-wing extremists) are worried and concerned about the direction the government is taking this country (under BOTH parties). Spending is like a runaway train, with little accountability on where our tax dollars are going.

The talk of secession is a way Texans have of expressing that anger and frustration, but the feeling is “real” all across the country right now.

Guys, I hate to say it, but a ton of people want to “secede” from this country now. How many people do you think have moved their businesses and/or residents out of America? I know tons of them and it’s only going to get worse. Welcome to Venezuela, friends.

So what’s the big deal if Texas doesn’t want to go down the toilet with Obama? Perry is a hero. Unless and until more people make stands against Obama’s slimy, dirty paws in our privacy, rights freedoms and bank accounts, then we’re not going to survive him. By the way, he’s not the only Governor asserting his state’s rights under the 10th Amendment. And I predict more to come. ImFedUp: I share your sentiments and your political history, and I am so sick of the talk of the “evil” Republicans I could scream. I stood hand in hand with those “evil” folks in November to try to keep Obama out of the White House, and I found them to be well-mannered, non-confrontational to those like me who oppose many of their views (as opposed to the many “get in your face” in my own party), and just as frightened as I at the scenario of Obama in the White House. I have many friends in both political parties, and I have lost many more Democratic friends in the past year than Republican ones. Maybe the tea parties have shown us that when matters in Washington become what we consider unacceptable, we all become Americans first. I hope so.

Speaking of Democrat Party fraud, Obama is going to Iowa next week to promote Iowa’s wind energy “industry.” It’s one of the campaign favor paybacks for the IA Dem Party ignoring the campaign fraud and corruption – like bussing people (probably ACORN and SEIU members) in to caste votes in the caucuses. Without IA allowing and, in some instances, enabling that to happen, Hillary would be president now.

I admired Ann Richards so much and the campaign GWB ran against her for governor was as nasty as his first presidential campaign against John McCain. I don’t like it when anyone tells me to keep my opinion to myself because I am very opinionated and it’s too late to change.

Hey, I’m all for Tea Parties and non-partisan movements, but that does not absolve GWB and what he did to this country and its treasure. Obama is certainly worse with his obscene bailouts, etc., but as someone pointed out yesterday, Obama did not emerge from a vacuum. If in 2012 or 2016 the Republicans offer up a candidate that continues on this corporatist path, this country will surely crash and burn — if it hasn’t already. The media spun the Tea Parties as ‘being just about not paying taxes’.

The real reasoning is that the Democrats have shown themselves as no different from the Republicans when it comes to ignoring the wishes of the majority of Americans.

People are tired of it. They’re tired of being lied to and politicians doing the opposite of what they say they’ll do.

Does anyone really think Obama and crew will prosecute Bush et al? This is the same group of Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, that ‘took impeachment off of the table’.

This is why there is a rise of people registering to vote as Independent. My sister was ahead of the curve. She became an Independent at least 15 years ago. I should have followed her lead.

Governor Perry is running for re election. This is just Texas local politics. But I don’t blame him for letting the Obama Administration know about the 10th amendment.

I totally agree about Molly Ivins, rest her soul. And she loved Ann Richards, too. I used to read Texas Monthly religiously, but even that venerated mag began to get much too political for my taste. I know they take on all sorts of topics, but I didn’t want to read any more crap about Obama drama there.

And I just want to point out, for anyone who missed me saying it 100 times before: Dubya was born in Connecticut. He is NOT a native Texan. I can understand why he wants people to think so, but he’s just another carpetbagger to me.

Maybe the best thing to come out of the tax Day Tea Parties will be the emergence of a new, strong third party — one that represents all the centrists. I think there are more people in the US who are moderates, but they reluctantly choose either Dem or Rep because they don’t feel they have anyplace else to go.

So if Texans care so much about the democratic process and want things to be better, why aren’t they investigating the fraud in the caucuses in Texas? Why haven’t they indicted ACORN for voter intimidation, fraud, etc.? Where are the indictments against Obummer’s campaign for their blatant election fraud? If Texans care so much, why aren’t they doing more to defend the Constitution and the fairness of the electoral process?

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?

1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas. (We will control the space industry.)

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States.

3. Defense Industry.. We have over 65% of it. The term, “Don’t mess with Texas,” will take on a whole new meaning.

4. Oil – we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states? Sorry about that.

5. Natural Gas – Again we have all we need and it’s too bad about those northern states. Al Gore will figure a way to keep them warm.

6. Computer Industry – we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications. Small places like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD,
Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Semiconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, etc., etc. The list goes on and on.

7. Health Centers – We have the largest research centers for Cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world and
other large health planning centers.

8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: UT Texas, A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston, Baylor, Texas Women’s University. Ivy
grows better in the South anyway.

9. We have a ready supply of workers. (Just open the border when we need some.)

10. We have control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. We don’t have an army but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an army in 24
hours if we need it. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over a couple of Texas Rangers.

12. We are totally self sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables; and let’s not forget seafood from the Gulf.
And everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. Don’t need any food.

You are dead on right about that. Unfortunately, that is the very reason the North could not allow Texas to leave without a fight. Tanks would roll on Texas. It happened in Waco to a bunch of religious kooks and it would happen to Texas. It brings to mind for me the civil war itself. In the South, it was all about states rights. It was about the North taking resources from the South, i.e. cotton… making goods in the North from them and selling those goods to the South at outrageous profits. The North can act righteous about Southern plantations all it wants in retrospect… but at the time having all that cheap cotton sure was nice for the North. Sounds like modern day “globalization” when you think of it that way. It has always been about greed. Nothing has changed… yet.

BTW, there’s far more precedent for Texas to secede than what the Blue states wanted to do back in 2004. This is about an out of control government not simply because Bush was re-elected President.

It may have been greed for the North, but my family was fighting for their homes. Tennessee had more battles than just about anyother state. My great-great grandfather was a lieutenant in the Confederate cavalry. Because he was an officer, he was disenfranchised and they lost their farm. From a beautiful home to a log cabin in Texas in one generation.

Yes, the plantation owners had grand homes… I would imaging the folks who run maquiladoras in Mexico also live well compared to their peers… but not nearly as well as the CEO’s who outsource labor.
