The Shot Heard `Round the World

Hillary stopped off at Bronkos Restaurant in Crown Point, IN over the weekend, had some pizza and a beer, and spent an hour or two visiting with locals.  Morning Joe discussed it a bit yesterday – take a look…

It’s also gotten a fair bit of coverage in the press.  Roger Simon (Politico) had this to say yesterday…

When I saw a video of Hillary Clinton downing a shot of Crown Royal whiskey in Bronko’s Restaurant and Lounge in Crown Point, Ind., on Saturday night, I was delighted to see that she has finally learned what campaigning for president is all about.

He went on to discuss Obama’s remarks at that high-dollar fundraiser last week, and Hillary’s reaction to it once the story broke.

But Clinton’s statement was not as important as her downing that shot of whiskey.

Presidential campaigning is about image making, and there is no better image than being a man (or woman) of the people.

What is important is their image.

Which is why the whiskey that Hillary threw back could be the Shot Heard Round the World if handled right.

If I were her campaign manager, I would be making the ad already:

Video: Barack Obama in a tuxedo at a fat-cat fundraiser.

Audio: “Barack Obama drinks Chateau D’Yquem and eats artisanal cheeses.”

Video: Hillary Clinton throws back a whiskey at Bronko’s Restaurant.

Audio: “Hillary Clinton knows how to drink like a real American!”

Video: Clinton slams her shot glass on the bar and wipes her mouth with the back of her hand.

Audio: “I’m Hillary Clinton and I approve this ad. I also approve Jell-O shots.”

Video: Clinton grins and motions to the bartender for another.

Audio: “Hillary Clinton. She drinks like you do.”

Source

Then there’s this article, which I absolutely love.  I wanna meet this bartender and shake the guy’s hand – maybe buy Russ Panning a pint.  Seems he’s a minor celebrity now – folks really want to get the dirt on Hillary’s visit, and of how she “threw back” that shot – multiple shots (?) – of whiskey.  He set them straight and said she had one with a beer & pizza, and sipped her shot.

Bartender describes Clinton’s shot, beer
April 15, 2008

That’s what we do here, we sip our shots with our beer.’

“They said, `You don’t sip shots, you toss `em back.’ I told them they don’t know what they’re talking about, and they told me I was getting combative,” he said.

Snip

She spent a lot of time talking to just about everybody in the restaurant. She sat down and had dinner.

Snip

She spent about two hours here,” he said.

Sen. Barack Obama has accused Clinton of pandering to the working class with her stop at the Main Street eatery, telling a crowd in Pittsburgh on Monday that candidates will do anything for votes, even “come around, with TV crews in tow, to throw back a shot and a beer.”

But Panning said the entire scene felt genuine.

“I just asked her if she wanted a shot, and she said, `Sure,’ ” he said. “Nobody suggested I offer it to her or anything like that.”

So BO’s accusing her of pandering with this stop for dinner eh?  Well here’s what Hillary’s campaign folks had to say in response to that nonsense…

“With all due respect, this is the same politician who spent six days posing for clichéd camera shots that included bowling gutterballs, walking around a sports bar, feeding a baby cow, and buying a ham at the Philly market (albeit one that cost $99.99 a pound). Sen. Obama’s speeches won’t hide his condescending views of Americans living in small towns.”–Clinton Campaign

Ok I’ll be fair – I played a clip of Hillary hanging out with regular folks so here’s a clip of Sen. Obama at the bowling alley.

Ok so this is a little tongue in cheek.  I can’t believe people are giving her shit for stopping off for dinner and talking with voters about the things they care about.  Beer & pizza… that’s about as genuine as you can get where I come from.  And from what I’ve heard of Hillary pizza’s about all she gets to eat on the campaign trail so this is hardly a departure for her.  It’s not like she’s eating salads full of arugula or anything ;o)

YES it would be NICE to have a PRESIDENT that is NOT a “known” alcoholic like W or drug abuser like BO.

I am so sick of the race card. Since when did elitist mean uppity. Elitist means he thinks he is socially superior, and he does think he is socially superior. I don’t give a damn what color he is. He is a horse’s ass. He is not qualified to be president.

He is not qualified to be president.

Only reason Obama is mad about it is because Clinton put a drink in her mouth while Obama keeps putting his foot in his mouth on camera and Clinton talks to people wjile Obama talks down to them!

Could it be that Obama doesn’t like the difference between Clinton’s being genuine and Obama being genuine as to how their two messages become so different, after all, they are both Democrats and should be telling people the same things!

    • truthtelling007

Yes, and his supporters also put their feet in his mouth. You know, ever since I launched the YouTube channel to help out the different bloggers who use the clips, i’ve been very fortunate to get all sorts of comments that show me exactly what this, “End of Politics of Destruction” aka ‘Obama’s better way’ will look like.

Today I got the following comments related to the post about Union workers protesting him:

“are you just going to go off on what Clinton is saying that it was at some closed off event. “

I pointed out to this immature chap that this was very assumptive about how people make their conclusions.

You do realize that people make conclusions without needing Clinton to say something first? I’m seeing supporters from all camps accuse others of taking their thoughts from their candidates and this just isn’t so. It may be true that some folks follow their candidate’s views word for word, but frankly as an independent, I resent the notion that I was offended because Clinton said anything. I get offended, bothered, irritated long before any of these three candidates speak.

So please, before you write stuff like this again, think about whether you would like to be told that your thoughts start in Obama’s head, or whoever you support, before you have them yourself. This is completely condescending and you just lent agreement to those who accuse Obama of being condescending and to his followers or supporters as being condescending.

If you truly are 23, i’m about twice your age and I really do think for myself whether you can see that or not. thank you.

how does this little obamabot respond? More of the same:

First of all, I was responding to the accusation that Obama is some snobby elitist. The comments may sound elitist but Obama is no elitist. And the only person calling Obama an elitist is Hillary Clinton. John Mccain himself has said, “no Obama is not an elitist, I know him, but his comments did sound elitist and I dont know where those views came from”. Clinton is pushing this elitist label like it’some unequivocal truth, sorry but I wouldnt trust her with anything she says. The fact is that Obama’s history is a far cry from an elite, and given the fact that some of her own surrogates have said he is not (look it up youtube). So you can take his actual comments however way you want. But this label that he was saying the things he said because he was in some closed off liberal elite gathering is complete bunk because he has said similar statements in other venues, that people vote on wedge issues like gun-rights, religion..etc, because they know that no matter how many promises a guy makes economically, they always renig and leave small town americans high and dry. That is the spot these “Reagan Democrats” are put every election. You have a democrat they support economically but the republican they support socially (ie. religion, gun-rights, anti-immigration) and why dont they ever vote economically?…because the democrat or the republican for that matter never come through for them. He has said this on numerous occasions, on tv and on the stump before, I will agree he sorta mangled it in these statements but I knew what he was saying. You can disagree all you want, but dont take your talking points from Hillary, especially when the republican nominee has diagreed, her own supporters have disagreed, and Obama’s history shows otherwise.

      To which I responded:

This is my whole point. How dare you assume that people take their thoughts from talking points. DO you take your points from talking points? I can see right through your assumptions because I’m not a Democrat, nor am I a Republican.

You are projecting and you missed the whole point of my message to you. You have no idea how I take his comments, and I haven’t told you how I take them. I have told you that I found him condescending, but I didn’t say it was because of these comments, or these comments alone. I find most politicians condescending by their very nature.

I run this channel so that a series of blogs can use the clips for commentaries. And time and again people assume they know my personal politic by what I put up here. Most of them haven’t considered that I’m doing this as a planning for a good defense on behalf of the candidates featured. Oh no, that wouldn’t be so obvious now would it.

But I know what I think, where it comes from and when you project all your assumptions in your message, and now you’d done it again, I can see where you are off. If I were to project on you that you were a gradeschool drop out who couldn’t get ahead, exactly how long would it take you to figure out that this isn’t correct? Shouldn’t take but a second if you know you didn’t drop out of school. But you so quickly bark out lines like “don’t take your talking points from Hillary”. Think this over carefully before responding.

“the only person calling Obama an elitist is Hillary Clinton. John Mccain ”

Not true at all. I deal with many people who are not for any of these folks and they just called him “elitist” too. They are independents who are way outside the Republican/Democrat duopoly. So you are still missing the point and need to BROADEN YOUR VIEW.

You really need to examine your comments again before responding. You’re barking up the wrong tree. And I can see right through your assumptions because I know where I stand, what my thoughts are, that I haven’t ever lived by “talking points” and to say that to me or others is arrogant. You are saying that YOU DON’T TAKE YOUR COMMENTS FROM TALKING POINTS, but that OTHERS DO. Give me a break friend, reassess and write back.

I’m not going to sell you out to such an ignorant view. I could just ignore you, but I don’t think you have thought this out very well. And you’re talking to someone who has been voting for over two decades as an independent.

Feedback if you wish, but stop the damn projection. You can do better than that.

But wait, the glowing example of Obama’s youth vote got better:

ok first of all you need to calm down…this is youtube for crying out loud..this isnt exactly the place for political fodder…second, I was actually on a political chat room and someone sent this link (a clinton supporter) and I assumed automatically you would be the same or at least a mccain supporter. And looking through your video selection doesnt exactly deter from that observation. Every other video I see has Karl Rove on as the picture for crying out loud. And did I say this is youtube?…where character limits pretty much make discussion useless to the point where any comment is useless and generalizations are easily made due to other posts by other members. Give me some credit here, I could have made the usual youtube BS comment that will either be marked as spam or deleted all together. And I am sorry for offending you, but I dont think you should be offended by commments made by someone(me) who has no idea who you are, no idea what you stand for, half the time is on youtube for no practical purpose at all, and just making in the moment haste comments that are often regretted 2 minutes later or completely forgotten at all. The fact that you actually messaged me is the only reason I even remember this whole episode…I dont even remember what the video was even about! So I am sorry if I “projected” anything towards you, am just shocked you actually care…believe me, I’ve been called worse on this site and just laughed it off…

Oh, so now I should calm down and just ignore what people say on YouTube, ok…coming from such an experienced political pundit as this guy it must be so!

“ok first of all you need to calm down”
wow, you just can’t help but project can you. Want to tell me what else I need to do? What are we up to now?
      1. don’t buy into what Clinton says about a closed event
      2. don’t buy into talking points
      3. calm down

you must be some sort of amazing genius to be in a position to tell others what to do. This is why I said you were, and your candidate is, condescending. You don’t have questions, you’re all answers.

Give you some credit? for what because you didn’t act like the worst of assholes? What sort of plea is that? If you want credit act with some integrity and quit projecting. You’re still doing it in every word and then making excuses.

And you’d have to do a lot more to offend me, don’t be so damn dramatic. I’m pointing out that you have political blinders on. If you’re too puffy in your ego to see that you don’t see so well, then so be it, wander off into the blind.

It explains your voting preference and your yapping off at others.

Don’t be shocked that I would care to write you. I don’t usually take the time to do so. Be thankful that someone took the time to call you out on projecting your biases and prejudice on others. You walk up and tell people what they think, what they buy into, what they should do, and what do you expect?

I’m not at all surprised that you’ve bought into Obama. I promise you, one day you’ll understand why its called, Youthful Idealism. Enjoy your daydreaming.

And never tell people, “you need to calm down.” That is the social equivalent of throwing kerosine on fire. And you didn’t have the respect to ask, “are you calm?” In fact, you don’t show much respect at all.

      —————
so there we have it folks, the condescending little pricks of Obama’s camp can dish it out, but can’t take it. They can tell you that YOU are buying into talking points, they can tell YOU that YOU don’t get it, but when you show them that they are full of shit…they want credit for not going completely stupid or want you to calm down because they know what’s best for you.

In all, i’m not surprised Obama has attracted these neophytes. It won’t stop any time soon either. They just keep on knowing much better than YOU or I what is best for us. Aren’t you so glad you have them available to keep you from harming yourself?

      • John

“Just calm down” is the last refuge of a person who knows he’s lost an argument. It’s a real favorite among the Obamabot crowd- “Oh shit, you’re right, I have nothing left to respond with, so I’ll make it all about you and your emotions.” It works with little children- and weak-minded Obamabots- but not with Hillary supporters, who have the FACTS on their side.

    On Hardball.

Sen. MacCain, when asked about Obama’s “typical white People” remark. He ducked the question. He was very careful and afriad saying a thing, he dance around the question. But when ask about having a shot of whiskey, that was funny to him and laughed about it. That reminds of the lady that asked him, “how do you beat that beach, refering to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. He laughed too! That showed you how most men treat women. The sad part of it is other wemen are the worst offender.

  • AF catfish

My mom who is a total partier thought Hillary was “pandering” by taking shot of whiskey. I think Obama got to mom and implanted that thought in her head.

Last month we saw a YouTube of Hillary and Mary Steenburgen having a beer on the plane. I think she was just relaxing on a Saturday night.

    • Catriley

Ah.. you might want to point your mom to that article up there about the bartender who took it upon himself to ask if she wanted a shot. It was unrehearsed, unstaged. You might want to mention to Mom that if you don’t drink beer normally, you cannot drink a few mugs of it, even for a campaign stop. Hillary is a midwest girl by way of Arkansas. Definitely the real thing.

      • beebop

I guess people got so used to a president that didn’t drink in public that seeing a candidate who does is a surprise. Calling it pandering is a slam on the people she was kicking back with. I bet most of them would be offended.

I can’t believe it (or maybe I can), there is an article tonight on Yahoo’s front page. It’s from Beth Fouhy of AP, one of Obama’s favorite scribes. She reports on a “white supporter of Obama” who told him in a Town Hall meeting that she was deeply offended that Hillary has called him an elitist. The white supporter told him he should feel offended because to her what Hillary meant was “uppity”!! And he should reject that and force an apology or something.

This is getting WAAAY out of hand. God save us from the white Obamacrats who are overidentifying with the AA community. I used to see that a lot on DU I(before I kicked DU to the curb because of the OBamacrats on attack there.) To Obama’s credit, he told her he didn’t think it was about race. However.. it was HIS campaign (and leaked memos) that outlined how to play the race card against Hillary and her surogates. They set up this atmosphere of hypervigilance about race, and it’s coming back to haunt him — turning his supporters into cartoon characters.

  • kenoshaMarge

I think Obama’s response to her having a “shot and a beer”, like his calling her “Annie Oakley” shows that he simply doesn’t get it.

He wants to portray her as some phony pandering to the people. He says she does that when she talks about her dad teaching her to shoot a gun and taking her duck hunting a time or two. Common folks calling Obama, that’s an experience many girls in the mid-west have. The only thing phony is the Obama camps faux outrage to something fairly common in our world.

Then he wants to make an issue of her stopping and having a shot and a beer. Not being from the midwest and not being a real man of the people is starting to show up real big.

See most of us don’t care that the Clinton’s have made a lot of money. That’s called the American Dream. And when some phony talking head that’s making millions of dollars a year, calling Tim Russert, shows faux outrage at their success it’s pathetic.

Pander all you want Senator I had a single mother and I go to church, some things look phony because they are phony.

Which makes me want to pat myself on the back because I thought Obama was a slick talking phony from day one. It’s always nice to be right.

I think Obama’s response to her having a “shot and a beer”, like his calling her “Annie Oakley” shows that he simply doesn’t get it.

Yeah, I think you’re right, and it again points to Obama’s lack of familiarity with the middle and working classes.

Which makes me want to pat myself on the back because I thought Obama was a slick talking phony from day one. It’s always nice to be right.

      Quote of the day! :D

Folks have that “gut feeling” that something isn’t right about Obama. Can’t define it, but you just know he’s not what he’s portraying.

Better to have a candidate with a past that has been hammered through for a decade — and vetted — than a candidate with a history, that is as absent as the young senator’s vote on the senate floor!

Empty suit doesn’t even describe the guy, he’s more like shed snake skin.

No heritage. No history. No body.

Does anyone know if Larry has two websites? Dkos had a Larry Johnson link this morning which goes to noquarter.typepad.com which I thought was the old site. I was surprised to see a link at Dkos and checked it out –different content.

Hillary pulled it off effortlessly–she was the belle of the ball–or should I say bar? Look at her mingling and kicking back. Juxtapose that image of Obama sauntering aimlessly in similar sports bar, then finally settling in a seat by himself to nervously sip the beer he so obviously hated the taste of (looked like he was sipping piss) and survey the crowd from a safe vantage point.

    Must reads up at Stop-Obama.org:

Lies, damned Lies, and Opinion Polls.

Obama Blatant Lies about Poverty, Hardship.

  • ebonyscrews

If Mr. Obama is going to tell the tall tale of having grown up, or at any point having been poor- voters are entitled to knowing the truth:

Obama at no point grew up poor in any economic or commonly understood sense of the term.

He may have been born to two flaky college students, so there were inconsistencies in the amount of attention he received at various points in his life, but both these students hailed from the top of the social ladder, and their son would only climb higher – never lower.
For most of his life, Obama’s status can be characterized as ELITE.

While Hillary Clinton did indeed enjoy a privileged upbringing, she has never said otherwise, and in fact ended her Texas debate speech with an admission that she wants all Americans to have the same privileges she grew up with. This is an ambitious, and I dare say sincerely noble, goal. I would be the last to object to a world, in which everyone can have the best education, best parenting, best public services, and the best protection from corporate, social, or individual abuse.

Unlike Clinton, Obama is flat-out lying and misleading the American people into believing he is a self-made rags to riches story, of utmost modesty and pristine moral character. Not only has Obama never encountered any “no” to even the slightest caprice, which is reflected in his brat-like arrogance, his economic history is that of a spoiled boy pampered on a tropical island!

For Obama to speak of hardship, poverty, privilege and opportunity, is stunningly amoral!

At the lowest points in his life, 90% of American’s did not know the opportunities Obama knew.

At its peaks, 99 % of American’s did not know the privileges little Barry was born into!

“Hillary Clinton. She drinks like you do.”

    God, I hope not!

A slight bit less than I do would be good. Anyway, gotta love this woman. We finally have a candidate that isn’t uncomfortable in their own skin. Can’t wait to see her tonight at the debate!

    • simon, too

“Hillary Clinton. She drinks like you do.”

No that would be Cheney, and McPeak.

Clinton doesn’t have a drinking problem.

      See the difference?

      LOL.

The front page USA Today article is headlined: “Obama tied to lobbyists, but boasts of not taking money.”

Very interesting link, and shows the extent to which big business runs our government.

But big business is comprised of some very untalented, mediocre thinkers, resulting in this mess we have today, from PR firms shilling for the President, to three wars that have been lost.

Remember all those business and communications, IT majors from college, the ones everyone disdained?

They reached their level of incompetence.

      Unfortunately, it’s in Washington, DC.

We need have a posting on Rev. Wright’s 1.6M mansion. I just saw the video in foxnews.com. Not only is he going to live in luxury, the mansion will located in a white dominated locality with a golf course.

    • Eurogirl70

and isn’t interesting that Mr. Afro-centric decided to build an English Tudor style-McMansion.

The “man” isn’t keeping Rev. Wright down. He is the “man”!! The sooner that people in this country, of all races and ethnicities learn that the great equalizer is money, the better off all of us without huge sums of money will be.

People in this country fall into (2) categories, those with money and those without. It is usually those with money who take it upon themselves to try and divide the rest of us, knowing that it is better for their own long-term goals! When will people stop buying into this snake-oil crap!

It was funny, but how far the disconnect goes between the MSM and real Americans.

I point to the writers of The Jon Stewart Show. They chose to use Clinton’s choice of shot, Crown Royal, as a joke about her being an elitist (why just like Obama!) … it would have been funny if it had not been so off.

Crown Royal for elitist? Holy hangover Batman!

My FIL is a flipping elitist? That Scranton native WWII veteran who lives in a double wide and won’t shop anywhere else but Sears?

Writers of the Stewart show obviously grew up somewhere else. My father, uncles … all had a bottle of Crown Royal. All were low-wage earners who lived a simple but dignified life.

And yes, we still have a purple sack somewhere we last picked up at FIL’s.

Me? I drink beer. Strong German or Canadian if you please. Just like my pappy taught me. He may have been classified poor, but he did not scrimp on the beer. RIP dad. I’ll drink a llave (Becks) for you tonite.

    • ginaswo

who was it that used their purple sack for their gun again?

    • ChrisXP

In all fairness, what would’ve scored better was a shot of Jack Daniels (whiskey) or Jim Beam (bourbon). For the ladies, perhaps, Southern Comfort. Not MD 20/20 or White Lightning (or malt liquor) of the really poor, but clearly the working man’s bar drink if he was drinking name brand shooters (most are fine with the happy hour special instead!).

Never drank Crown Royal. It’s always been Jack or Jim (or for my dad, Canadian Mist for liquor; and the #1 beer during the Korean war [complete with can opener], Pabst Blue Ribbon, for “beer call”).

True to form MSNBC diminished the whole episode. Andrea Mitchell’s true colors showed when she called it the “bar scene from starwars.” I would suggest she was insulting everyone in the bar on BO’s behalf or at least trashing Hillary and the rest of the patrons because she can’t help it.

If she’s still covering Hillary during the PA election it looks like we’ll be seeing Andrea looking very sour (shades of Texas).
