It’s Yellow and Round – *Open Thread*

And it will make you smile.
Okay it doesn’t hurt that it’s paired with a catchy tune.
Still, I’ll bet you can’t play this only once.

But Keepon, the little yellow spongiform “peeps” looking robot, has developed a more serious side – dealing with autism.

Keepon was originally created by Marek Michalowski at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, US, and Hideki Kozima of the National Institute of Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan to be a less robotic, robot. And as the video above shows it would be hard to find a more engaging, human friendly robot. Which is why Keepon is one of many new robots being employed by researchers to study and possibly provide therapy to children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

From Robots to Fight Autism

Children with ASD often have trouble with the “dance” of body language and facial gestures needed to have successful conversations and social contact with others. Both reading the intentions of others and knowing their own emotions can be a struggle, and children often become stranded both emotionally and socially.

One baby in every 150 born today in the U.S. is diagnosed with ASD. Treatment involves a combination of therapies — behavioral, educational, physical, occupational, and speech — that is costly and not always effective. After finding that children with ASD interact more easily with robots than with people, researchers began developing expressive and interactive robots that can assist them in studying and creating effective therapy for the children.

Keepon’s gentle boogieing and its simple, innocuous appearance (five inches tall, rubbery, resembling two tennis balls stacked one on top of the other) make it perfect for interacting with socially withdrawn children. Armless and legless and only possessing two eyes and a nose, Keepon expresses itself mainly through its four movements: nodding, turning, rocking and bobbing.

However, Keepon does have a camera behind those eyes and a microphone hidden in its nose. Researchers Michalowski and Kozima have studied preschool children with ASD in Japan and have found that interacting with the robots draws the children into a range of new social behaviors. Videos of those encounters show the children feeding Keepon imaginary food, giving it imaginary medicine when it has a Band-Aid on its head, and protecting it against abuse by other children.

The most striking video shows one girl slowly forging a relationship with the robot. At first she refuses to even directly look at Keepon, but as the days go on, she draws closer to the robot, eventually touching it with a xylophone stick, then her hand. After weeks, she can be seen looking into Keepon’s eyes, putting a hat on it, and even giving it a kiss, an action she rarely performed even towards her own mother.

So what made you smile today?

    I want one!

I don’t care what they say about vaccinations and Autism I believe there is a link. I’ve seen with my own eyes children that are developing normally then go to a doctor for their vaccinations and come home and within a few days are living in their own world. I’m very surprised they haven’t caused some type of super disease in one of these infants.

They’re inoculating these infants/toddlers/children like they’re going into the military. 4, 5, 6 shots then 2 weeks later 4, 5 or 6 more. I made my children inoculate their children the way they were inoculated. No more than 2 at a time and at least a month apart. My grandchildren have the same pediatrician that my own children had when they were growing up, so they’re very lucky. At first she gave my daughter a hard time about it, told my daughter that there has never been a proven link between vaccinations and autism.

My daughter said, “Famous last words, maybe not today, but we don’t know what they will prove tomorrow. Did you vaccinate me like that? No. You’re not going to do it to my baby. There is some reason why Autism is on the rise and it didn’t begin rising until pediatricians started giving our children these vaccinations 4,5,6 in one visit. These aren’t adults. Their bodies are not fully developed. Grown adults get sick when they go in the military and have all those vaccinations at once. Their bodies are fully developed. I don’t know why they ever thought it would be safe to do so to children. Or is it because they can’t speak or fight for themselves? Well not my children and besides if I let you do it my mother would come unglued and you know how she is.”(I trained that child well. ;) )

      I want one too Diane.

The vaccinations sure seem to be a link. It may not be the only thing. Just wish they would discover what. Its heartbreaking for families.

That little guy is hard to resist. Who wouldn’t fall for him?

My parrot is making me smile this AM. Lola is like living with someone suffering from Tourette’s. I never know what’s coming out of her mouth, but I’m pretty sure it’ll make me laugh.

    • Linda Anselmi

Good job Lola. Thanks for sharing PE.

For me, it always seems a better day if I can find a good laugh or two.

Very interesting! Thanks for bringing us this story, Linda.

This seems to be the robot equivalent of the “happy face.” It will be huge–just what we need in the coming depression!

    • Linda Anselmi

I agree, we’ll probably need giant sized Keepons.

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Taliban seized control of another district in the country’s northwest just 70 miles from the capital after consolidating their hold on the Swat Valley, according to local government officials and residents.
The latest Taliban advance into the Buner district has spurred fears that a controversial peace accord, which allows the militants to enforce sharia law in Swat, has emboldened them to expand their influence.
Militants have been moving into Buner since the Swat peace deal was signed with the government in February. But starting Tuesday night they seized control of the entire district, which has a population of more than one million people, local government officials and residents said. Heavily armed militants, streaming in from neighboring Swat, occupied government offices and set up their own checkposts. Terrified residents fled their homes.
Dozens of hooded fighters carrying rocket launchers and machine guns ransacked the offices of international aid and development agencies working in the district and took away their vehicles. Some employees of the agencies were also briefly taken hostage. The militants set up their headquarters in the town of Buner after driving out government officials…..

This would be extremely upsetting if I didn’t know that our leader has been to Pahkistahn 20+ years ago and so knows how to fix everything.

          Hello Paula Revere…
Tom Cat Jefferson and Portia Crockett

How are my favorite Patriots today?

          • Paula Revere

Hey USMoss, I am great today. Loving being a patriot and ready to save our country LOL. You???

            • http://www.marklevinshow.com Ulysses S. Moss

              Hey Paula!

I’m ready to defend those that have kept us safe.
Levin is going to represent the lawyers for free. There will be no mercy for those out to prosecute for political reasons. Every fact will be made public per Levin’s demands. The trail will ultimately lead to all those that wanted to be protected including revisionists within the democrat party.
Very messy and destructive to this country but as Levin says bring it on.
After the show trials are over and Obama and his henchmen are out of power Levin and others will carry on prosecuting the traitors by bringing civil suits that will lead to their collective demise.
This whole event will lead to the destruction of Obama and all those pigeon headed revisionists that would tear down this country and apologize and give secrets to the enemy.

              • Paula Revere

Me too USMoss. Sickening what is going on. Everything I hear about what Obama is doing scares the hell out of me, and no one gives a damn. It’s all about prosecuting the Bush folks. I can’t wait until we get to prosecute the entire Obama Sadministration too! Pelosi might not look too good in orange LOL.

                • http://www.marklevinshow.com Ulysses S. Moss

Obama his minions and all the wimpy revisionists fail to realize a simple fact

Republicans and wealth producers hold all the strings.
The administration of Bush/Cheney are just waiting for the right moment to expose all those who were supportive in regards to keeping the country safe.
The amount of power that Cheney still has is enormous and will be growing with the advent of the library they are building. Almost like a shadow government in exile.
Combine the fact that Obama only won by 7% despite a unpopular president and you have the makings of a huge backlash
Centrists and republicans will be up in arms if prosecutions go forward.
The mobilization will be profound throughout the country and all those that have been trashing this country and pushing their Statist immoral agenda will be labeled the new Villains.

My suggestion to the new villains

                  Run and hide!!!

                  • Paula Revere

Yeah, it’s a really great time to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, if not more, on trials that will go nowhere. WTF is up with that? And, I guess the courts will start clogging up anyway, since there’s no such thing as a “war on terror” and every murderous bastard that attacks us will be kept warm and safe, given three hots and a cot, and coddled with a free defense attorney, on us. Great country.

                    • http://www.marklevinshow.com Ulysses S. Moss

                      Paula,

This country still is great because all centrists, republicans and libertarians will be mobilizing against all those that would sacrifice American lives to protect a known terrorist responsible for thousands dead.

The shoe is on the other foot now!!

Anybody who still takes this IMMORAL stand is now classified as a Villain to the people of the United States of America.

I’m very hopeful now that the tide is turning against these anti-American scum.

                      Have a nice day

                      Will be back on later

The Joe Cocker video was funny. And Well done. I doubt if I will ever hear that song again with out “hearing” some of the alternative words instead. Thanks for sharing Lyn.

Years ago there was a a big fuzzy puppet that therapists could purchase to work with autistic kids. Mic and camera also in its body. Never heard much about it since.
