First Mutt: Toons I Wish I Could Have Done

(Editor’s Note: Happiest birthday, Pat! Aren’t we all lucky she joined our motley crew of writers and added her highly creative cartoons that, like all good cartoons, speak volumes about an issue?)

webrpuppytoon_edited-2

This week marks my one year anniversary as a cartoon illustrator/writer for No Quarter. Over the last difficult 12 months there have been many cartoons I had hoped to create (e.g., Hillary Clinton: First Woman President!), but alas, now we have to make do with the President we have. This drawing represents one I wish I could have done about the First Family. Read my wished-for story below.

*********
Today Barack Obama’s family announced the adoption of a puppy from an animal shelter in Akron, Ohio. The Obama family had earlier announced their decision to do their part by providing a good home to a puppy that desperately needed one. Shelters from all over the country sent in photos and descriptions of available puppies that met the hypoallergenic requirement, given daughter Malia’s allergy to pet dander.

It was a difficult choice, but a 4-month-old mixed-breed puppy won over their hearts. “Phoenix,” as she is named, was flown in from Ohio to meet the family. “It was love at first sight,” said Michele Obama. “The girls are delighted. When she matures, she will be a perfect size for our living situation as well.”

Phoenix’s mother was a Poodle-Tibetan Terrier mix, and her father was a Miniature Schnauzer. These three breeds, along with over three dozen more, are designated as “hypoallergenic.”

At the much-awaited press conference, President Obama reminded Americans that now is a tough time for companion animals needing to be rescued. “Whereas many are unwanted and simply dropped off at shelters, increasing numbers are beloved pets that the owners can no longer care for,” Obama said. He also noted that families who have lost their homes often cannot take their dogs and cats with them because pets are not allowed or not appropriate to the relocation. The President added, “We have to remember that when people lose their homes, their pets lose their homes too. Anyone who can provide a caring and loving home for a pet needing a new family is encouraged to do so.”

The President, who once jokingly referred to himself as a “mutt,” has been widely praised for his decision. The role model provided by him and his family will surely encourage others to consider adopting a shelter or rescue cat or dog. “It required no new law and no vote by Congress, and yet the First Family’s decision pays tribute to the American spirit of helping those in need,” said Susan Symonds, an animals rights activist who has integrated several abandoned cats and dogs into her own family.

OK, that’s the story I wanted to write. In the real world, puppy mills are no doubt already pumping out Portuguese Water Dogs while shelter animals continue to languish.

Obama sucks, he lies, breaks promise, nothing/no one means anything to him, he is a scam artist and anyone who is hoping for anything good out of that racist, sexist, evil doer will be sadly mistaken!

P.S. the Obama’s wouldn’t have ever adopted a white dog. They are racists! They hate white. period. I do even believe they hate the White House.

    • Anon

That is why every time he refers to it, he calls it “the people’s house” so that he doesn’t have to say white house.

  • Peggy Sue

I like your “wishful dream,” Pat. I like the cartoon pup, too. That grin looks like one that one of my “very large” puppies might have.

In this case, I really do hope the Presidential pup works out for Bo’s sake and Obama’s daughters. The family may not be “dog people.” But kids, almost all kids, are doggy friendly and doggy wild by instinct. And why not? Unconditional love. Doesn’t matter who you are. A dog will love a serial killer as long as the animal’s basic needs are met. And often, even that’s not necessary.

We could learn a lot from our canine friends.

    Enjoyed it! Thanks.

Btw, congrats on your one year anniversary. Confetti, anyone??

    Hey Pat.
    Congratulations Pat!

Have you sold any of the art?

Maybe you could auction certain Obama pieces on NQ

    • Pat Racimora

      Thanks U.S. Moss.

Maybe someday we will do a fundraiser for No Quarter (it costs a lot to run this blog) and we will give away signed prints.

      • shep

Dibs on the one you did last year titled, iirc, “What Is it?” with Nancy P & a couple of others looking at a PUMA. I’d love to have a t-shirt with that graphic on it – bet it coulda been a top seller at the PUMA blogs!

  • JohnnyB

60 Million dogs in the U.S. The Pres. has to have a dog, even if he never has had one before. This is just to satisfy the electorate with another “I’m one of you”. The script writers will be fired soon, then we get another story line.

I think it is child abuse to have two young children in the White House away from their real lives and put into a fishbowl. So much for family values.

  • Linda Anselmi

    Love the toon Pat.

I too wish it was the real story you were writing about. What a positive example and inspiration for others the President and his family would have set had they adopt a mutt, shelter rescue or even a real breed rescue. My second wish would have been to at least pick a breed that was a bit more adaptable to the average busy family.

Congrats on your 1 year anniversary with NQ!!! Thanks for more chuckles and out right laughs then I can count. Keep’em coming!

  • oowawa

Pat, it has indeed been a pleasure enjoying your cartoons and reading your stories for the past year. Congratulations on your NQ anniversary! Your cartoons manage to convey kindness and compassion, even when you’re being critical.

As for the Obama pet situation: if there is anything that could soften my heart towards Mr. O, it would be if he convinced me he were genuinely concerned about the plight of homeless, neglected, and abused animals (and people as well, of course). Adopting a shelter mutt would have made me feel better about him. Oh well! Maybe he’ll eventually surprise me with a streak of genuine kindness and compassion that has so far not been apparent, as it is in your cartoons!

  • ClaraBarton

Great toon and diary, Pat. I’ll wager we won’t see that dog again for awhile.

One thing you wrote about has bothered me for days. Media shots of the happy family and their new puppy as they walk and get pulled toward their huge mansion don’t exactly do much for those poor people who have had to take their pets to a shelter or rescue group (or even leave them behind in an abandoned foreclosed home) because of hard times. They don’t have a home to go to or a pet to curl up with. The juxtaposition with the Obama happy family is bothersome to say the least.

    Happy Anniversary!

  • TeakwoodKite

Best Wishes Pat. You have made my life a brighter place. Thank you for that. Happy Anniversary!

Thanks NQ for giving Pat a forum for her wonderful artwork and thoughtful insights.

  • Patrick Henry

    What Teakwood Said..

    Ditto..Thanks Pat..

  • elise

Happy Anniversary and thank you for the toons and posts. Lovely fantasy story. Of course, if he and his team were the kind of people to do something like that, they wouldn’t be the people we have come to know and loath.

    Congrats, Tricia! Great year’s worth.

As for poor Bo. If they would let Malia take care of him, he’d probably make it. Sad, they went back on their promise of adopting one from a shelter. But then, isn’t that what he always does?

Poor Hillary….did you see her today trying to defend HIS position in the congress and getting beaten up over it?

  • Eastan

    Happy Anniversary, Pat.

Our four dogs and four cats want to know if you to portraits for hire. I, too, wish your story was true. I, too, am a dreamer. Maybe the electorate will wake up, demand a switcheroo and four years from now we will all take up a collection here at NQ to find a homeless Cocker to give to president Hillary.

    Shine on.

By Harry Nielson. The Puppy Song.

Dreams are nothing more than wishes
And a wish’s just a dream you wish to come true

If only I could have a puppy
I’d call myself so very lucky
    Just to have some company
To share a cup of tea with me
    I’d take my puppy everywhere
La la la la I wouldn’t care
Then we’ll stay away from crowds
With signs that say no dogs allowed
Oh we… I know he’d never bite me
    We… I know he’d never bite me

If only I could have a friend
Who sticks with me until the end
And walk along beside the sea
To share a bit of moon with me
I’d take my friend most everywhere
La la la la I wouldn’t care
And we’ll stay away from crowds
With signs that say no friends allowed
Oh we…we’d be so happy to be…
We…we’d be so happy to be together

But dreams are nothing more than wishes
And a wish’s just a dream you wish to come true
Dreams are nothing more than wishes
    (Your wish will come true)
And a wish’s just a dream (Your wish will come true)
You wish to come true (Your wish will come true)

  • I’m a Linda too

so true. And within 2 years, there will be a sh!t load of Portuguese Water Dogs abandoned and joining the other doggies in the pound.

    :(

    • I’m a Linda too

Oh yes, Pat, please have a super Birthday!

  • JTomorrow

    Dear Pat,
Thank you for the tunes and great commentary! Happy 1st!

  • Pat Racimora

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments about my work. Much appreciated!

  • Rich

Beautiful cartoon! If they had found a dog that looked like this I am sure the children would have insisted on it, unless the children really did not have much of a voice as to what dog was going to be theirs.

The cartoon that I would have liked would have two dogs in it, one being a shelter dog that could look almost as cute as this dog and the other is a Portuguese Water Dog. In the cartoon the shelter dog is about to be put to sleep and the Portuguese Water Dog is saying to the other dog “To bad you are not like me.”

Another promise made, but not kept.

Late night thanks and congrats on your one year anniversary–I love seeing your work here!

  • jwrjr

As I remember it, the reason that the “doggie” search took so long was an allergy problem. So what did the Stoner-in-Chief get? An animated mop. (Despite appearances, I nave nothing against furry pets.)

  • Portia Elizabeth

    Happy 1st anniversary, Pat!

I always enjoy your cartoons, but that happy little puppy is especially poignant because of the dashed hopes he represents. As someone who’s done pet rescue and who donates to several animal orgs, I was extremely saddened when BO didn’t follow through on his promise to adopt a shelter dog. Some might accuse me of anthropomorphizing, but I believe shelter dogs understand when they’re rescued and try even harder to show their gratitude.

Two years ago we adopted a 9-year-old Malamute mix from a local shelter. He’d been there for months because most people don’t want an older dog. His story was that (after 9 years of being someone’s faithful pet!), he was a threat to their new baby. A total lie. He’s the gentlest, sweetest dog in the world. He’s also a strong defender of our family and a joyful companion. He even tolerates my cats.

    • Taylor

I wish Bo would have been rescued as well…too bad. It would have been a great example to set for the nation.

Glad to know your fighting to help rescue dogs and animals alike

Dogpile.com just launched a new site called http://www.DoGreatGood.com – and their donating a portion of there revenue to Petfinder and the ASPCA.

Great that theres a way we can help dog adoption programs at no cost.

Love the site – keep it up!!!

Congratulations on your 1st Anniversary, Pat. And, thanks for this. It is another brilliant cartoon and blog post. So true, so sad.

    Hi Sis
Congratulation on your first anniversary. The whole family is very proud of you and your talent.
As for the Obamas Im sad that they didnt let the girls expeirence the wonderful feeling of adopting a pet. As you, mom and I and millions of others out there know, opening your homes to an animal that would otherwise come to a horrific end is so heart warming. They make such a wonderful addition to the family.
    Love ya

  • Don X

Pat, Congratulations on a year of wonderful cartoons and accompanying presentations of issues. You are not only a creative cartoonist, but a writer who makes us think seriously about important issues. Your readers have the opportunity to comment and argue about controversial issuea. To be sure, some of the comments reflect a lot of rage and disappointment about the outcome of the election and dire predictions about the future of the country under present leadership. But there are some who feel that the President is making an honest effort to deal with the broad range of problems he inherited from the past asministration and doing the best he can with a bad deck. I think we need to give him some time to see what can be done to help rescue the economy and create an atmosphere for better international relations.

As for the pup, it seems he got an offer he felt he couldn’t resist. Nevertheless, his encouragement of others to do what he had said he wanted to do may actually stimulate more adoptions of homeless pets. I hope it works out that way.

may god bless the dogs and all animals. i think back to the hurricane that hit no last year. as i recall so many of the “owners” who left their dogs for transport never bothered to pick them up. what was their excuse??? i know there are many who may have real financial issues with their animals, but i have to say that the throw away mindset in this country apalls me.
