Taliban Surge Pakistan

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

NWFP_redmap_04142008.jpgTaliban on the march in the fine Spring weather in the Northwest Frontier.  The spotty reports from Pakistan point to a surge of Taliban aggression ever since the failed state leadership at Islamabad ceded control of the Swat Valley to the jihadists.  The surge is not headed to Kabul and the American legions but rather toward Islamabad and the nuke armed Pakistani legions at Rawalpindi.  Sunday 26 I will speak to a roundtable of Ann Marlowe, Bill Roggio, Tunku Varadarajan and Larry Johnson on the AFPAK border region turmoil and the Obama administration war-fighting plans. There is no contingency that I have heard for a Taliban takeover of Pakistan. The reports are grim:

“If the Taliban continue their advances at the current pace they will soon be knocking at the doors of Islamabad,” said Fazl-ur-Rehman, who leads the Jamiat-e-ulema-e-Islam, the country’s largest Islamic party, in remarks to parliament on Wednesday.”

Washington hears the fire alarms:  StateSec HRC said Thursday: “this insurgency coming closer and closer to major cities does pose… a threat.”

Bill Roggio reports in his comprehensive Long War Journal:  ”Pakistan has reportedly rushed paramilitary forces into Buner today, but some units were attacked by the Taliban stationed there…. The Taliban advance on Mansehra and Haripur takes place at the same time they are moving on the districts of Swabi, Mardan, and Malakand. The takeover of these five districts would essentially cement the Taliban’s control of the province”

Pakistan, the Taliban and Islamabad: Is Anyone Out There?

    Beating a Dead Horse

If I am getting tired of talking about the same thing, then people must be getting tired about reading about the same thing. This situation was once a dangerous thought, then a dangerous development, and now it is seemingly an extremely dangerous reality.

Slowly but surely, as discussed in this blog ad infinitum, the Taliban is moving towards Islamabad and a de facto takeover of the government of Pakistan. Much like Hitler was appeased by France, the UK and the Soviet Union in the 1930′s when he was allowed to take Czechoslovakia, the Taliban has been appeased but does not seem satisfied by what they were given either.

What will be the result if there is a full takeover of Pakistan by the Taliban, and more importantly the weapons that Pakistan controls. The world, as the saying goes, will be up a very brown creek without a paddle. There have been questions all along regarding the current government of Pakistan in terms of it’s allegiances, and that is who we are counting on to put down this dangerous, dangerous situation…

It’s gonna be funny when at the end of the witch hunt, Nancy Pelosi and 3 other Democrats are hanging at the end of the noose.

If you haven’t seen the video of Nancy trying to rewrite history regarding her participation in the meetings about the techniques that will be used, take a look. She stutters as badly as Obama ……………….

No Obama fan but you can blame him for the dents in the fender that got put there by the last 5 owners.

The Reagan Administration let Pakistan go nuclear. They thwarted congressional effort to stop it. They funneled billion of dollars through Pakistan during the Soviet-Afghan War. They sold Pakistan 30 or 40 F16′s. Dubya just sold them replacement a few years back.

Pakistan’s head nuke scientist has made a career out of spreading nuclear technology and components to rogue states. They sold NK the component and expertise required to enrich Uranium.

Bush’s claim that hew would go after Osama and fight terrorist anywhere stopped at the Pakistan border. He stopped our special forces from going after him in Tora Bora.

    • Carol HAKA

I believe we gave Pakistan billions of dollars to go after them so that we wouldn’t piss off the terrorists further.

Musharaff is in position to stage a coup

Is that irony or what? He stepped down to avoid impeachment and now he needs to step up and both stage a coup and save the backsides of our “ass clowns” in charge at the same time. He ought to get Al Gore’s peace prize if he pulls this off.

  • Ulysses S. Moss

    Israel
    Please hurry!

    • Docelder

Hey U.S., And like we are to believe that this just “happened” yesterday? Excuse me, but these “ass clowns” have been in charge for months now and have traveled the world together all 500 of them as a gaggle apparently and meanwhile the Taliban gets this close to nukes before anybody gets overly concerned about it? We have been sending drone planes into Pakistan for months… and nobody had any idea, no idea at all this was coming? Right.

      • Ulysses S. Moss

The enemy has figured out our tactical strategy. Obama has said for months that he would divert troops from Iraq to Afganistan. The logical thing for the terrorists to do is occupy another state.

Terrorists in just a few short weeks will have nukes.

      • chris from Chicago

Our resident genius President Obama is not a proactive kind of guy..his cabinet is the gang that can’t shoot straight…
he will wait until he has no choice but to act…
by that time it may be too late….
But maybe that is his game plan…after all..I certainly do not think that America is close to his heart, not the way he has been abusing and debasing her…
In these trying and dangerous days we have a POTUS who is arguably not trustworthy to do what is best for this country…I think his allegiances are divided…

      • cynic

Some forget Barack Obama stated back in 2007 that it might be necessary to send U.S. troops into Pakistan, even without that government’s permission. He was called naive for suggesting such a thing.

Obama has been saying for the past two years that the critical areas are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Military strategists had been warning us for even longer that the job in Afghanistan was being neglected; they told anyone who would listen that a dangerous Taliban resurgence was building. That warning went unheeded.

Pakistan has as many as 100 existing nuclear warheads.

As it turns out, naive may not have been an entirely appropriate word regarding Obama’s comment. A better one might have been prescient.

        • elise

cynic do you think it’s a good idea to send US troops into Pakistan without that governments permission? I’ve never believed you were so reckless in your support, but this is seriously suicidal. Iraq is not a picnic in the park, but what you are suggesting is insane.

          • Benjamin

Another question – where would these troops come from? We still have 140,000 in Iraq and we’re adding 17,000 in Afghanistan. Our volunteer force is overextended as it is, so it might require a draft in order to send enough troops to Pakistan. It also might be too late for a military intervention. We have to pray there is some sort of contingency plan whereby Pakistan could hand over their weapons if Islamabad is about to fall.

            • cynic

One would hope a multi-national task force could be assembled to remove or destroy the Pakistani nukes. Failing that, I’d favor some rapid reprioritizing. I never wanted US occupation forces in Iraq in the first place.

          • cynic

I generally dislike the idea of sending US troops anywhere. I tend to think of war as a failure of reason. But think for a moment what it could mean if the Taliban’s uniquely virulent brand of militant Islamic fundamentalist extremism got together with a pre-existing collection of nuclear warheads and a fully functional delivery system.

We simply cannot allow a band of medieval religious lunatics to get their hands on the keys to 100 existing nuclear weapons. Compared to these psychos, the Iranian and North Korean governments seem rational and fairly predictable.

          • lorac

I understood that he hs been bombing Pakistan since he took office.

        • Benjamin

For God’s sake, can we stand by and allow the Taliban to get control of a nuclear Pakistan? And I think the figure is 60 warheads, not 100. There was a link on memeordandum.com that showed the Taliban cutting off the heads of suspected spies…

The question is not what Obama said in the past, but what the hell is he going to do now? I think it’s 3:00 AM.

    • TeakwoodKite

      Israel?

You look at a map of late?

They need over flight and they won’t get it. Seriously. Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, refuel over the drink or skirt Iran?

They would be picked off of on radar before inbound from Lehore? Afghanistan?

The Pakistan government made a deal with the Devil more than once, and I’ll be dammed if we are the ones to pay the tab!

I would think that Iran would be required to re-inforce her border with Pakistan. Unless the devil they broke bread with is Iran. I have to wonder were the logistical support is coming from.

I think this strategy of getting a jump on the Pakistan forces and fighting a entrenched gerilla warfare saps the resolve of most modern forces. If I was a Taliban, I would take as many lessons away from the US experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I leave you with the gem of the week.

WASHINGTON — Just back from a visit to Pakistan, Sen. John Kerry says the Obama administration’s plan for that volatile country, rolled out last month with great fanfare, “is not a real strategy.”“Pakistan is in a moment of peril,” Kerry, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said during a session with USA TODAY reporters and editors. “And I believe there is not in place yet an adequate policy or plan to deal with it.”

      .

      You still have my vote.

      • Docelder

        not a real strategy

Where is a real strategy to deal with anything? I mean anything? It is all smiles, one liners and campaigning. Endless campaigning. He is not a strategist. He is a community organizer. He does not solve problems he creates them where none existed before. Why can almost nobody get that?

      • Seattle Moss

You look at a map of late?

        Teak
I knew you would catch that..I actually know the map very well, but was only wishing beyond hope as Obama will do nothing to prevent the terrorists advancing on Islamabad from getting the bombs.

        Israel,
        I’m still waiting on Iran
        What’s the hold up?

When you can only depend on Israel to save the world you realize just how bizarre this country has become.

        • Docelder

Or, Musharraf can take the country by coup and save the nukes. If so, Obama can go bow to him. Because at least he would have done something to deserve a bow.

          • Seattle Moss

            Right on Doc!

        • andrew 191

It would only take an indirect blessing from 0bama for Israel to move. Don’t hold your breath.

        • TeakwoodKite

If Iran is distracted on her eastern border, Isreal might take advantage of it, or least make Iran spread out some.

Kerry can shoot his mouth off but he is not a complete fool. I guess he just wants to remain relevent, but the shot across BO’s bow is un-mistakable.

I still would really like to know what part of the ISI is not loyal to Pakistan and is feeding the Taliban arms and intel.
