One would hope a multi-national task force could be assembled to remove or destroy the Pakistani nukes. Failing that, I'd favor some rapid reprioritizing. I never wanted US occupation forces in Iraq in the first place.

There's uncertainty about the actual number of Pakistani warheads. As of 2006, estimates range from as few as 90 to as many as 250 weapons. They have a missile delivery system with a range of almost 3,000 miles--long enough to drop a warhead on London.

I generally dislike the idea of sending US troops anywhere. I tend to think of war as a failure of reason. But think for a moment what it could mean if the Taliban's uniquely virulent brand of militant Islamic fundamentalist extremism got together with a pre-existing collection of nuclear warheads and a fully functional delivery system.

We simply cannot allow a band of medieval religious lunatics to get their hands on the keys to 100 existing nuclear weapons. Compared to these psychos, the Iranian and North Korean governments seem rational and fairly predictable.

Pakistan, the Taliban and Islamabad: Is Anyone Out There?

Beating a Dead Horse

If I am getting tired of talking about the same thing, then people must be getting tired about reading about the same thing. This situation was once a dangerous thought, then a dangerous development, and now it is seemingly an extremely dangerous reality.

Slowly but surely, as discussed in this blog ad infinitum, the Taliban is moving towards Islamabad and a de facto takeover of the government of Pakistan. Much like Hitler was appeased by France, the UK and the Soviet Union in the 1930's when he was allowed to take Czechoslovakia, the Taliban has been appeased but does not seem satisfied by what they were given either.

What will be the result if there is a full takeover of Pakistan by the Taliban, and more importantly the weapons that Pakistan controls. The world, as the saying goes, will be up a very brown creek without a paddle. There have been questions all along regarding the current government of Pakistan in terms of it's allegiances, and that is who we are counting on to put down this dangerous, dangerous situation...

I believe we gave Pakistan billions of dollars to go after them so that we wouldn't piss off the terrorists further.

It's gonna be funny when at the end of the witch hunt, Nancy Pelosi and 3 other Democrats are hanging at the end of the noose.

If you haven't seen the video of Nancy trying to rewrite history regarding her participation in the meetings about the techniques that will be used, take a look. She stutters as badly as Obama ...................

No Obama fan but you can blame him for the dents in the fender that got put there by the last 5 owners.

The Reagan Administration let Pakistan go nuclear. They thwarted congressional effort to stop it. They funneled billion of dollars through Pakistan during the Soviet-Afghan War. They sold Pakistan 30 or 40 F16's. Dubya just sold them replacement a few years back.

Pakistan's head nuke scientist has made a career out of spreading nuclear technology and components to rogue states. They sold NK the component and expertise required to enrich Uranium.

Bush's claim that hew would go after Osama and fight terrorist anywhere stopped at the Pakistan border. He stopped our special forces from going after him in Tora Bora.

Another question - where would these troops come from? We still have 140,000 in Iraq and we're adding 17,000 in Afghanistan. Our volunteer force is overextended as it is, so it might require a draft in order to send enough troops to Pakistan. It also might be too late for a military intervention. We have to pray there is some sort of contingency plan whereby Pakistan could hand over their weapons if Islamabad is about to fall.

For God's sake, can we stand by and allow the Taliban to get control of a nuclear Pakistan? And I think the figure is 60 warheads, not 100. There was a link on memeordandum.com that showed the Taliban cutting off the heads of suspected spies...

The question is not what Obama said in the past, but what the hell is he going to do now? I think it's 3:00 AM.

cynic do you think it's a good idea to send US troops into Pakistan without that governments permission? I've never believed you were so reckless in your support, but this is seriously suicidal. Iraq is not a picnic in the park, but what you are suggesting is insane.

Some forget Barack Obama stated back in 2007 that it might be necessary to send U.S. troops into Pakistan, even without that government's permission. He was called naive for suggesting such a thing.

Obama has been saying for the past two years that the critical areas are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Military strategists had been warning us for even longer that the job in Afghanistan was being neglected; they told anyone who would listen that a dangerous Taliban resurgence was building. That warning went unheeded.

Pakistan has as many as 100 existing nuclear warheads.

As it turns out, naive may not have been an entirely appropriate word regarding Obama's comment. A better one might have been prescient.
