Cutting Through the Nonsense: 10 Reasons to Vote for Hillary

Pennsylvania’s primary is tomorrow, and TV ads are reportedly running round the clock, aimed at swaying undecided voters.  Unfortunately, many campaign ads are not truly informative.

This morning, I thought again about why I support Hillary — reasons beyond the intelligence, warmth and wit that would make her a great Happy Hour  partner.  I thought about what she will bring to the White House and how our nation will benefit in practical ways from her knowledge, skills and perspective.  Ten of my reasons are below.

1.  Hillary grasps economic concepts: knowledge a president will need in January — given our nation’s debt, job loss, credit crunch, recession….

2.  Hillary has a plan to get us out of Iraq, a plan that the 34 flag rank military officers who endorsed Hillary also find impressive.

3.  Hillary has a health care plan that offers broad coverage for Americans.

4.  Hillary’s Senate committee assignments encompass a wide array of issues — including veterans affairs, education, military issues, labor, health, and the environment — which give her a solid  foundation from which to help shape public policy.

5.  Hillary understands foreign policy and has dealt with officials from dozens of other nations.  This will be useful, as our nation tries to solve problems with nations of the Middle East, Africa, South America, Europe….

6. Hillary has broad support among American voters, evinced by her wins in the primaries of big states (e.g., California and New York) and swing states (e.g., Florida and Ohio).  In short, Hillary’s in a good position to compete with John McCain.

7. Hillary has demonstrated concern for fellow Americans — starting with her civil rights activities during college and her work during the seven years after college, which she devoted to public service (instead of taking her Yale law degree straight to lucrative arenas).

8.  Hillary has broad life experience. As well as public service, she has experience in private law practice and the corporate realm, which gives her the perspective needed to help reconcile our nation’s many competing interests.

9.  Hillary has learned how to get things done in Washington, both as a second-term senator and as a First Lady. For seven years, she has worked with members of Congress, some of whom had been nasty to her family.  Hillary put aside the personal stuff and worked on getting things done.

10.  Hillary is strong, resilient, and tenacious.  She has faced more scrutiny
and ugly attacks than most politicians, yet she’s still standing.  Better than that, she’s still fighting.  That’s the spirit a president needs in order to solve the many grave problems our nation faces.

I have more reasons for supporting Hillary, including many Senate votes of which I approve, but I promised only 10 reasons and don’t want to strain eyes.

Various pre-primary polls are conflicting again — this time over the Pennsylvania primary.  For example, a recent Quinnipiac poll has Hillary 7 points ahead of Obama, while Gallup has her 2 points behind. My poll comparisons from yesterday are here.

If you’re in Pennsylvania, don’t let the polls persuade you that there’s no point in voting.  Whoever your candidate is, please get out and vote!

Memeorandum has commentary.

Obama Predicts Clinton Win on Tuesday
    By NEDRA PICKLER, AP
    Posted: 2008-04-21 15:43:15

SCRANTON, Pa. (April 21) – Barack Obama predicted Monday that Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton would get the critical victory she needs in Tuesday’s Pennsylvania primary, but said his goal is to keep it close. …

  • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity

Mr. Yes We Can has predicted a Clinton win. Wow. That was a hard one.
    http://news.aol.com/elections/story/_a/obama-predicts-clinton-win-on-tuesday/20080421114809990001

I guess he figures all those praying hicks with guns are going to vote.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

I should add: Besides trying to set expectations for how Hillary has to do tomorrow, he’s also got another excuse all ready to go — it’s those “typical white people,” the “bitter” ones who “cling” to guns and religion who are so bigoted they can’t see past his skin color and vote for him. I can already hear Olbermann and Matthews spinning that.

I love CNNObama. When Obama is ahead by four points, they call that a margin. WHen Hillary is ahead by 7, it’s a Slim Margin.

Good news though. They accidently let slip that the preponderance of the 7 percent undecided are mostly Catholics, which favors Clinton.

Thanks Jeremiah! You miserable poor excuse for a man of God, you.

This from a National Review article by Byron York:

“I could tell you I’m going build you a house, and I’m going to do everything you want,” a man named Bernie tells me. “I’m going to put everything in it just the way you want it. And then you give me your money, and you find out I’m not a carpenter.”

It correctly sums up why not Obama. Bernie is a smart guy. Why Clinton is not a difficult question as your blog shows.

(april 21, 2008) Obama Superdelegate Margaret Campbell – Montana DNC, Changes to Uncommitted (Missoulian News Online)

    ——————————————————————————–

Politico’s superdelegate watch listed in today’s update that Montana DNC Margaret Campbell was being switched to uncommitted. Here is a link to the article

    Excerpt:

    Quote:
Although she expressed support for Obama’s candidacy, she also called one of his staff members later in the day to make it clear she was not ready for a public endorsement. She said she needed more time to speak with voters.

The staff member tried to dissuade her, said Campbell.

Later in the day, Campbell was told a national press reporter had already moved forward with the story of an endorsement. “The New York Times jumped the gun,” she said.

Meanwhile, Clinton had also been in contact with Campbell on Sunday, following a weekend of rallies, dinners and fundraisers in Montana by both Democratic presidential candidates.

Clinton called while Campbell was driving back to her home on the Fort Peck Reservation. Clinton thanked Campbell for the gift of a star quilt – Obama also received a quilt – a tradition shared among Great Plains tribes.

“Like all Montana Democrats, I was extremely excited on Saturday night by the speeches of both candidates and the change they offer after seven and a half years of failed policies of the Bush administration,” said Campbell. “And I was proud to present both senators with gifts on behalf of my people.”

While on the phone, Clinton discussed Campbell’s superdelegate vote. “She said she knew I had a tough decision to make,” said Campbell.

Campbell said she realizes she is in a unique position, given that she is one of three American Indian superdelegates nationwide. She said she feels it is her responsibility to take more time to listen to voters, including leaders in Indian Country.

waited until 3:44 (central) and made a $44.44 contribution to hillary. went to my email to check for receipt (not there yet – maybe they’re a little slow due to massive contributions coming in? hope so).

what i found was another of those howard dean emails wanting money. text of my reply is below:

I just made another contribution to Hillary Clinton.

I will NEVER give a dime to the DNC, because of the DNC’s blatant, unforgivable maneuvering to force an unelectable, un-presidential, un-Mmerican candidate on us.

If Obama is nominated, I will immediately start contributing to the RNC.

I’ve been a completely loyal democrat all my adult life (4 decades). You have changed that.

If you want me back, and millions like me, you will stop your efforts to nominate Obama and stop your efforts to fool democrats into thinking you have our best interests at heart. You will have to earn me back.

I see no indication that you intend to even try, so I guess I’ll have to become a McCain democrat. Your doing.

have sent similar replies every time they ask for money. never get an answer. they keep asking so i guess they’re not reading my messages. will keep trying.

“Why can’t I just eat my waffle?” he said, when asked a foreign policy question by a reporter at the Glider Diner.

Obama: ‘Why can’t I just eat my waffle?’

Every time he’s asked questions he seems to complain. You’d think he’d be used to it by now.

  • beebop

ABC website has the announcement that Barry doesn’t want to debate in NC again, so it has been cancelled.

Call it what you will … he looks totally frightened to face any media scrutiny or to take on Senator Clinton.

Debate Cancelled For Obama posted by OxyCon

We can’t let Barry Obama look bad, can we?
This is the debate that Obama defiantly said he would not attend, after he got his clock cleaned in Philly.
    —————–

North Carolina Democratic Presidential Debate CANCELLED

We regret to inform you that the proposed Democratic Presidential Debate scheduled for April 27 has been cancelled due to time constraints and logistical issues associated with such a large, national event.

You have shown tremendous passion and interest in being a part of history as Democrats are poised this year to elect the first female or African-American President. However, there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity.

  • simon, too

He also ducked out of a NC primary with Clinton.

That, um, man is a wuss.

    He can’t fight, period.

Let the man eat his waffle! posted by OxyCon
    04.21.2008 – 3:58 pm
    From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan

SCRANTON, PA — Chomping down on sausage and waffles at Glider’s Diner in Scranton today, with his Pennsylvania BFF (Sen. Bob Casey) at his side, Obama avoided commenting on former President Jimmy Carter’s meeting with Hamas.

Asked by a reporter if he had heard that Carter reported a positive outcome from the meeting, Obama looked sternly at the reporter in question and said, “Why can’t I just eat my waffle?”

Asked again by the reporter, Obama bit — not at the question but into a butter covered bite of Glider’s specialty over-size Belgian waffles. With a wink this time he said, “Just let me eat my waffle.”

  • Hillary is the Best

    LOL

Well I hate to insult chickens by calling Obama one of them, but he is.

This after our Democratic governor asked him to please consider doing the debate.

Obama is all about Obama, oh well.

Another great talking point to use with undecideds, Obama too chicken to debate. Debated all these other places, but totally dismisses us here in NC!!!

I know for sure of one person that is wavering who this will definitely be a deciding factor….I’m actually thinking this is a good thing, his chicken shi**edness!

    He doesn’t.

We let Bush get away with it, because everyone thought he was stupid.

At least Rove made him look OK.

Obama just looks like a big fat wuss, chickening out. Here, he’s supposed to be the Harvard grad, so brilliant, and he can’t fight Clinton intellectually, he can’t even spin his issues away, improvising, face to face, the wuss, he can’t think on his feet.

Yes yes I see the brilliance…Maybe that’s what looks smart to Kos, I don’t know…

And seriously, if he’s afraid to debate Clinton, and he is, hands down, this was a BAD move, how the hell is he going to handle a foreign power, one who is highly intelligent, JUST LIKE CLINTON.

    He won’t.

    He can’t.

What, did he really think the run to the White House would be as easy as his “race” in the Senate?

His half wit wannabes, Axelrod and Pfouffle, would take down Clinton?

    Stupid provincial wussies.

It seems odd to me that Obama would want to leave voters with that pathetic performance as a lastword on his debateing skills. I know the next time could be worse, but really, how bad could it get? I guess Hillary could body slam him and that would be embarassing.

I just find it awfully strange that we are left with this picture of how he will stand up to scrutiny in the future. Maybe Hillary will let him wear one of those things Bush had up his shirt in 2004. He could get a zap every time he said something stupid.

You can add then to the list below!!!

    1. As a young woman, Hillary Rodham worked as a babysitter both after school and during her vacation breaks, sometimes watching the children of migrant Mexicans brought to the Chicago area for itinerant work

    2. She worked at various jobs during her summers as a college student, once in a canning factory in Alaska, in 1969.

    3. Hillary Clinton volunteered at Yale’s Child Study Center, learning about new research on early childhood brain development, as well as New Haven Hospital, where she took on cases of child abuse and the city Legal Services, providing free legal service to the poor.

    4. Perhaps the most successful component of her accomplishments as First Lady was initiating the Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997, a federal effort that provided state support for those children whose parents were unable to provide them with health coverage.

    5. She also successfully sought to increase the research funding for illnesses such as prostate cancer and childhood asthma at the National Institute of Health.

    6. The First Lady also gave voice to the illnesses that were affecting veterans of the Gulf War, with the possibility of their suffering the toxic side effects of chemical “Agent Orange” used in warfare.

    7. In the spring of 1974, she returned to Washington as a member of the presidential impeachment inquiry staff advising the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives during the Watergate Scandal.

    8. She cited the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 as the achievement she initiated and shepherded that provide her with the greatest satisfaction. Beginning with an article she wrote on orphaned children in 1995, through a series of public events on the issue, policy meetings with Health and Human Service officials, private foundation leaders, the drafting of policy recommendations, and eventually lobbying with legislators led to its passage.

    9. The First Lady led a second effort, the Foster Care Independence bill, to help older, unadopted children transition to adulthood. She also hosted numerous White House conferences that related to children’s health, including early childhood development (1997) and school violence (1999).

    10. She also supported an annual drive to encourage older women to seek a mammography to prevent breast cancer, coverage of the cost being provided by Medicare.

    11. Hillary Clinton was the only First Lady to keep an office in the West Wing among those of the president’s senior staff. While her familiarity with the intricate political issues and decisions faced by the President, she openly discussed his work with him, yet stated that ultimately she was but one of several individuals he consulted before making a decision.

    12. She persuaded Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to convene a meeting of corporate CEOs for their advice on how companies could be persuaded to adopt better child care measures for working families.

    13. With Attorney General Janet Reno, the First Lady helped to create the Department of Justice’s Violence Against Women office.

    14. One of her closest Cabinet allies was Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Following her international trips, Hillary Clinton wrote a report of her observations for Albright. A primary effort they shared was globally advocating gender equity in economics, employment, health care and education.

    15. During her trips to Africa (1997), Asia (1995), South America (1995, 1997) and the Central European former Soviet satellite nations (1997, 1998), Hillary Clinton emphasized “a civil society,” of human rights as a road to democracy and capitalism.

    16. The First Lady was also one of the few international figures at the time who spoke out against the treatment of Afghani women by Islamist fundamentalist Taliban that had seized control of Afghanistan

    17. One of the programs she helped create was Vital Voices, a U.S.-sponsored initiative to promote the participation of international women in their nation’s political process. One result of the group’s meetings, in Northern Ireland, was drawing together women leaders of various political factions that supported the Good Friday peace agreement that brought peace to that nation long at civil war.

    18. Hillary Clinton was also an active supporter of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), often awarding its micro-loans to small enterprises begun by women in developing nations that aided the economic growth in their impoverished communities. Certainly one of her more important speeches as First Lady addressing the need for equal rights for women was international in scope and created controversy in the nation where it was made: the September 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.

    19. Also like Eleanor Roosevelt, she authored books during her tenure. For the spoken word version of her book regarding family policies, It Takes a Village, Hillary Clinton was the recipient of the recording industry’s Grammy Award.

    20. Hillary Clinton sits on four Senate Committees with a total of eight subcommittee assignments: Senate Committee on Armed Services with three subcommittee assignments, on Airland, on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, and on Readiness and Management Support;

Senate Environment and Public Works Committee with three subcommittee assignments on Clean Air, Wetlands, Private Property, and Nuclear Safety,

    on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water and on Superfund, Waste Control, and Risk Assessment;

the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, with two subcommittee assignments, on Aging and on Children and Families; and the Senate Special Committee on Aging.

    21. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center in downtown New York City, Senator Clinton worked to secure $21.4 billion in funding to assist clean up and recovery, to provide health tracking for first responders and volunteers at Ground Zero and to create grants for redevelopment.

    22. In 2005, she issued two studies that examined the disbursement of federal homeland security funds to local communities and first responders.

    23. Senator Clinton visited American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq during the U.S. war in those nations. She became a national advocate both in public and in her Senate work on behalf of retaining and improving health and other benefits for veterans.

    24. As an advocate for her state, Senator Clinton led a bipartisan effort to bring broadband access to rural communities; co-sponsored the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act

    25. included language in the Energy Bill to provide tax exempt bonding authority for environmentally conscious construction projects; and introduced an amendment calling for funding of new job creation to repair, renovate and modernize public schools.

    26. Senator Clinton won an extension of Unemployment Insurance, which passed on the first day of the 108th Congress. She was a vocal opponent of the Bush Administration’s tax cuts.

    27. Rodham Clinton has received many prestigious awards, including the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service,

    28. the President’s Award of the League of United Latin American Citizens,

    29. Role Model of the Year, by the United Steel Workers of America;

    30. the Martin Luther King Jr. Award from the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and

    31. the National Association of Elementary School Principals Distinguished Service Award.

    32. In 2006, she led the fight to kill the anti-gay Republican constitutional amendment that for the first time would have added laws to the Constitution that would INCREASE discrimination

    33. She was one of the key Senators who fought to give our military badly needed raises and increase in benefits. For being such flag wavers, it was the Republicans and Bush who resisted these attempts to show our military how much we value and appreciate them.

    34. Voted YES on $100M to reduce teen pregnancy by education & contraceptives. (Mar 2005)

    35. IN 1988 Instituted gender diversity Report Card within the American Bar Association, which sets standards for lawyers in the U.S

    36. Voted YES on adding violent crimes based on victim’s sexual orientation to definition of hate crimes.

    39. Voted to Require DNA testing for all federal executions. (Mar 2001)

    40. Voted YES on spending $448B on education & debt reduction instead of Bush’s tax cut for the rich. (Apr 2001)

    41. Voted NO on drilling for oil in the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve on national security grounds. (Apr 2002)

    42. Voted YES on targeting 100,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2010. (Jun 2003)

I don’t waste my time on CNN blogs. Cafferty was just having one of his fantasies with his hands under his desk again. He said if Obama does an upset tomorrow, the Democratic party would be telling Hillary to go home and bake those cookies. Why on earth would I even bother trying to have one of my messages actually make it to that pig’s blog? How would you like to be married to that. At least if he weren’t so freaking ugly and shriveled looking, you might overlook his problem with women, particularly his mother.

I bet that most of the memories that live longest in his mind never really happened.

  • Shainzona

Susan: Did you see the NC debate is “cancelled” because the NC Dem Party is concerned it would undermine party unity? Dooh! Another way to say it, “We’re concerned Obama will look stupid – again!”

So who do we think the corporate Dems want to win?

    Can we say BO?

Gotta love BO’s remote viewing skills.

On the remote chance that anybody can view any of his skills.

    oops
1)He takes pride in being remote.
2)His ability to view things is non existant
    3)He has no skills.

Senator Hillary Clinton is qualified, intelligent, kickass person, who KNOWS where the closet AND the skeletons are.

I’m reading polls and it looks like women in PA are going to help Hillary kick that sexist pig’s butt. But like one of his trolls said the other day, ‘We don’t need you to win”. All right then. We are going to take you up on that.

  • TeakwoodKite

I still hear Mr Johnson saying there two stories being “sat on” ….

Wonder if the timing is close to being right.

Mr.J? 3 months of suspense long enough? :)

  • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity

I did see a piece where the PA people were complaining that he is all over the TV allllll the time and they didn’t like it.

  • LA Confidential Pantload

It’s a tough crowd here – first you bust on BO for being a waffler; then when he actually, y’know…waffles, you’re all up in his grille.

I’m in PA (Philly) and I’m not a Dem, so the primary isn’t particularly important to me. Seeing the city plastered with BO posters has me puzzled about a few things, though. I really don’t get the BO phenomenon when I see things like:
    1. The posters that just read “HOPE.” What’s Hillary running on? “DESPAIR?”
    2. The posters that read (and the commercials that recite) “Change you can believe in.” First of all, the only change that I for-sure believe in is the kind that jingles in my pocket. Any other kind of “change” needs to be followed by bullet points in clear English before I’ll even think about believing it. And why am I supposed to believe it? Is there some sort of track record that will make a believer out of me, and, if so, where is it?

I usually come to NO QUARTER for stuff on the GWOT, so I’ll be relieved when this election is over. I’ll be especially relieved when tomorrow is over, as the barrage of political ads has reached the level of white noise.

happened in texas. i tried just tuning in sports, but it was even there. so i gave up. would just watch a game if one was on (and change the channel if an obama commercial came on), then turn the tv off entirely. guess obama cost a lot of channels some ratings points. too bad so sad….
