A Word from A Republican Lobbyist

I have friends who are lobbyists. Some are Republicans. Some are Democrats. I got this today from a friend on the Republican side of the aisle. I think it is instructive:

Today oil prices hit yet another record high. Food prices are soaring. In the United States, stores are beginning to ration the sale of rice, flour and cooking oil due to food shortages. The dollar continues weaken and inflation continues to grow and only threatens to get worse. 80,000 Americans lost their jobs last month, and tens of thousands of layoffs have already been announced this month. We are in the midst of a housing crisis, a mortgage crisis, and a credit and financial crisis. The Fed had to step in and rescue one of the country’s largest investment banks. Homeowners have had their home equity lines of credit shut down. Inventories are up. You can’t pick up the Wall Street Journal each week without seeing the words “recession, depression, or crisis.” The War on Terror is far from won and we continue to suffer major setbacks in Afghanistan. The US military continues to weaken, and the Army and Marine Corps are enlisting convicted felons in order to fill their ranks. People across this country from all demographics are genuinely frightened. Yet, the only thing the House Republicans can talk about is an earmark moratorium. Eliminating earmarks tomorrow won’t solve any of these problems. Arguably, it could make some of them worse. We all know this is a gimmick. Earmark money is not “new” money put in spending bills, so what programs are they going to cut from Bush’s request to create money for a proposed stimulus check? The time for gimmicks has passed. The country has real problems and needs real leaders with real solutions. How many more House seats do they need to lose in order for them to figure this out? Wasn’t the loss of Hastert’s seat a clear signal of what awaits them in November if they don’t start offering the country a real agenda?

I agree with my friend.  Earmarks, in and of themselves, are not evil.  I believe in full disclosure.  My friend’s point is that the Congress, particularly the Republicans, are fiddling while our nation burns.  Think any of these things will be issues in the fall?

  • rjj

Issues in fall? Not unless they ration gas.

Good post Larry..All will be important…I heard on NPR about US grain reserves going to the lowest point in decades and that we have drastically cut our usual contributions to the world food bank…Our contribution is dependent on a 1/3 surplus ratio and we keep in reserve the other 2/3 ration.
Been hearin on the BBC lots of intl’. food aid and UN folks complaining about the drop in US contribution. I think globally speaking of course are getting pretty hairy and reminiscent of the past ( only scarier )…I’m just sayin’

Earmarks, in and of themselves, are not evil. I believe in full disclosure.

Might I recommend the “Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act”?

Hidden, last-minute earmarks hide pork and add to wasteful federal spending. Senator Obama sponsored the Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act. The bill would shed light on the almost 16,000 earmarks that were included in spending bills in 2005. Under the bill, all earmarks, including the name of the requestor and a justification for the earmark, would have to be disclosed 72 hours before they could be considered by the full Senate. Senators would be prohibited from advocating for an earmark if they have a financial interest in the project or earmark recipient. And, earmark recipients would have to disclose to an Office of Public Integrity the amount that they have spent on registered lobbyists and the names of those lobbyists. Several of these provisions were included in the ethics and lobbying reform bill that passed the Senate in January 2007.

    Any guesses who sponsored this?

Excellent points – I think whomever the dem nominee is, all of those things should and will be brought up. Despite similarities (both parties use earmarks, etc.) there are clear and demonstrable differences between current GOP policies, McCain’s presumptive and expressed policy proposals and those of the Democratic candidates.

Clear differences that the voting public will be able to do fairly straightforward comparisons on.

Larry…Thanks for putting this up..Your Republican Friend is Right on all points..I just watched the business channel..The Euro is now at $1.60 and Oil was up $2 and the price at the pump hovers at $4.00

The problem I have is that All of this has Happened under a Republican Administration that also hade Control of the Congress..and the republicans have gone along with Bush on Everything to The War and Funding…to Cutting Taxs for the wealthy at the same time..and Increasing Our National deficit..

At some Point ..The moderate Republicans should have
sided with the Moderate democrats and gone beyond all this Partisanship that has Divided Our Nation and Done so much Damage..

How could the housing market have been so rosy and Raved about One Month and in the Tank the Next..?

Why Have there not be Increases in Profit Taxs on those Oil Companys ..or even a plan to subsidize the Truckers and transportation industry in light ofIncreasing Fuel Costs..

I cannt think of One good thing the Bush Administration Have done for damage control or stimilus or running a responsible govfernment that seems to Care what is really Best for the Nation..

All they have done is divide the People, the Nation ,
Create Alienation, and making matters Worse.

Now that we have a crisis, We Have the Choice of More of the Same or a radical Backlash..The above ALL are Issues on Peoples Minds Now, beyond the Campaign Talking Points that are Creating so much National Angst..that people are Relying more on “False Messiahs” and “False Hopes” than they are on Reality Checks..Conservatives and Right wingers will go Republican..even if the candidate starts sounding like Dr. Strangelove..

The Far Left has seen thier chance for a “COUP..COOP..CANDIDATE”..as a Backlash..who is Promising a “Workers Peoples Paradise..”..and the World will be One..

In the Middle is Hillary..the Rational Realist..

I go with “Rational” and “Realist”

    Vote Hillary

I wish you were as well… but we know how they like to go back to the same old playbook – regardless of how well the plays work anymore.

Hopefully, the people won’t fall for it this time…

    SHUCK AND JIVE

Clinton Supporter Andrew Cuomo, Referring To Obama, Said “You Can’t Shuck
And Jive At A Press Conference. All Those Moves You Can Make With The Press
Don’t Work When You’re In Someone’s Living Room.” Clinton-supporting New
York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said the thing that’s great about New
Hampshire is that you have to go out and meet people rather than “shuck and
jive” through press conferences there. Cuomo said of New Hampshire on an
Albany radio station: “It’s not a TV-crazed race. Frankly, you can’t buy
your way into it. You can’t shuck and jive at a press conference. All those
moves you can make with the press don’t work when you’re in someone’s living
    room.” [Newsday, 1/11/08]

MARTIN LUTHER KING / LYNDON JOHNSON COMPARISON

Clinton, Criticizing Obama For Promising “False Hope” Said That While MLK
Jr. Spoke On Behalf Of Civil Rights, President Lyndon Johnson Was The One
Who Got Legislation Passed: “It Took A President To Get It Done.” Clinton
rejoined the running argument over hope and “false hope” in an interview in
Dover this afternoon, reminding Fox’s Major Garrett that while Martin Luther
King Jr. spoke on behalf of civil rights, President Lyndon Johnson was the
one who got the legislation passed. Hillary was asked about Obama’s
rejoinder that there’s something vaguely un-American about dismissing hopes
as false, and that it doesn’t jibe with the careers of figures like John F.
Kennedy and King. “Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President
Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act,” Clinton said. “It took a president to
get it done.” [Politico, 1/7/08; Video]

Clinton Introducer Said JFK Gave Hope, But Was Assassinated. Clinton
introducer: “If you look back, some people have been comparing one of the
other candidates to JFK and he was a wonderful leader, he gave us a lot of
hope but he was assassinated and Lyndon Baines Johnson actually did all his
work and got the republicans to pass all those measures.” [HRC, Dover, NH,

    NELSON MANDELA

Bill Clinton Implied Hillary Clinton Is Stronger Than Nelson Mandela. “I
have been blessed in my life to know some of the greatest figures of the
last hundred years. [...] I go to Nelson Mandela’s birthday party every year
and we’re still very close. [...] But if you said to me, ‘You’ve got one last
job for your country but it’s hazardous and you may not get out with life
and limb intact and you have to do it alone except I’ll let you take one
other person, and I had to pick one person whom I knew who would never
blink, who would never turn back, who would make great decisions [...] I would
pick Hillary.’” [ABC News, 1/7/08; Audio]

    DRUG USE

Clinton’s NH Campaign Chair Raised The Youthful Drug Use Of Obama And Said
It Would “Open The Door To Further Queries On The Matter.” Clinton’s
Campaign Issued A Statement Distancing Themselves From Shaheen’s Comments
And Shaheen Issued A Statement Saying That He “Deeply Regret[s] The
Comments.” The Democratic presidential race took on a decidedly nasty and
personal turn, with the New Hampshire co-chair for Clinton, raising the
youthful drug use of Obama. Shaheen said Obama’s having been so open — as
opposed to then-Gov. George W. Bush, who refused to detail his past drug use
during his 2000 presidential campaign — will “open the door to further
queries on the matter. It’ll be, ‘When was the last time? Did you ever give
drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?’” Shaheen said. “There are so
many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It’s hard to overcome.” By the
end of the day, Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer had issued a
statement asserting that “these comments were not authorized or condoned by
the campaign in any way.” And Shaheen himself issued a statement: “I deeply
regret the comments I made today and they were not authorized by the
campaign in any way.” [ABC News, 12/12/07]

Mark Penn, In Trying To Defend His Campaign Over Bill Shaheen’s Obama Drug
Use Comments, Used The Word “Cocaine,” Drawing A Rebuke From Edwards Adviser
Joe Trippi. Mark Penn, defending the Clinton campaign in light of Bill
Shaheen’s comments about Obama’s drug use, repeatedly referenced Obama’s
cocaine use. Edwards adviser Joe Trippi accused Penn of dropping the word
“cocaine” deliberately. Mark Penn said “Well, I think we have made clear
that the — the issue related to cocaine use is not something that the
campaign was in any way raising. And I think that has been made clear. I
think this kindergarten thing was a joke after Senator.” Joe Trippie
responded and said “I think he just did it again. He just did it again. …
This guy’s been filibustering on this. He just said cocaine again.”
    [Politico, 12/13/07; Video]

    FAIRY TALE

Donna Brazile Lashed Into Bill Clinton For Comparing Obama To A “Fairy Tale”
And Said “It’s An Insult… As An African-American” And That His Tone And
Words Are “Very Depressing.” Donna Brazile lit into Bill Clinton over his
insulting comments of Obama, where he called him a “fairy tale” and said “I
could understand his frustration at this moment. But, look, he shouldn’t
take out all his pain on Barack Obama. It’s time that they regroup. Figure
out what Hillary needs to do to get her campaign back on track. It sounds
like sour grapes coming from the former commander in chief. Someone that
many Democrats hold in high esteem. For him to go after Obama, using a fairy
tale, calling him as he did last week. It’s an insult. And I will tell you,
as an African-American, I find his tone and his words to be very depressing.
… I think his tone, I think calling Barack Obama a kid, he is a United
    States senator.” [Politico, 1/8/08]

It will follow the same pattern, high now, then they’ll lower prices, than push them higher, the
old guy concept of psyching the consumer.
But really, I don’t think they have any notion of how this affects the economy as a whole, this has to be about the stupidest group of oil, and economy people I have ever seen.

Clinton understands the dynamic, McCain is afraid to make waves, plus pledged to lobbyists, and Obama doesn’t know that oil and gasoline are related products, he votes as his oil owners wish.

While informative, that was just really, really, depressing. Hillary has been focusing so much on the real issues, but the media is still pushing that guy who “inspires”

Obama would have been a good type of candidate to follow Bill Clinton, when the economy was rosy and the consumer confidence was fine. But in light of the global problems we face, he is wrong, wrong, wrong. Inspiring someone to vote for you doesn’t mean jack shit when it comes to getting the job done.

I honestly that if a Democrat gets elected in November, believe it or not, many of the issues our economy is having will be repaired through good old fashion consumer confidence. If you recall, it dipped horribly when Bush was (s)elected in 2000, then continued the slide when he was (s)elected in 2004. The republican economists are foolish to believe that economic health and growth comes from the top down. It ALWAYS comes from the bottom up, from the spenders. And when they don’t feel confident, they don’t buy. And when the investors don’t feel confident, they don’t create new growth.

I think the CCI will get a bump regardless of who pulls up in that moving van in January — but the only sustainable and measurable bounce will come from a Democrat, and most notably Hillary.

One solution, the Economist said was in the offering, dealt with micro farms, food grown more locally by small farmers, as in the old days.

On the plus side, this is healthier, and global warming is reduces as food doesn’t have to be transported around the globe.

So possibly a scenario of reinvestment emerges, which might help in terms of solving hunger, and strengthening local economies.

But much of that also is dependent upon highly corrupt governments, who have been known to forsake their people.

This true for House, but I would not limit it to the Rebulicans or else Pelosi would have called for impeachment and killed the funding for this occupation of Iraq.

In the struggle for “global economies” and corporate domination on a global scale, the American economy will be brought to it’s knees. This is a necessary requirement to advance a the globalist corporate theocracy. It has been in motion since before the advent of the atomic bomb, but has accelerated rapidly since.

We had the “three amigos” of Mexico, Canada and the US actively participating in a way of ending the underpinnings of national sovereignty. They are using eminent domain to build a super highway like a stake through the heart of Texas as we speak.

It involves a multi-pronged approach over time, to dilute the government via contracting, the gutting of all “civil” institutions including the DOJ like some quasi-motto rendition. Controlling media and information…

The odds of ‘red teaming’ this successfully via the electoral process are grow larger by the hour.

Greed is not concerned with the nation state. The “new world order” has been a goal for some time.

Compare it to the incremental creep with Roe v Wade…nibble until it is gone.

Oh Goody, 1968. And they are complaining about not wanting to go back to the 90s.

  • Kevin

ummmmm… Pat, WTF are you babbling about? “don’t even under the “Girl” comment do you…”

were you trying to actually make a point? Just checking… since I’m “so Sexist”, please cite an example. I’m tired of being accused of things I haven’t done or said.

  • rwc

The lobbyist is spot on and a lot of those issues he mention will be quite topical in the GE.

They ought to be now but since both sides are pandering to their respective bases economic issues get little if any attention.

I don’t know if it is by willful design or more of an organic process that is greed and the human need to control one’s suroundings.

Our Constitution was designed to be a perpetual Phoenix. Look around the planet and then look with in our own boaders…the masses of humans are being equalized.

Congress and monetary policy caused this problem and that’s what’s required to fix it. The GOP Congress deregulated the banking industry in the 1990s. That set the stage for the subprime slime. Monetary policy set by Greenspan held interest rates too low for too long. Deregulated banks took advantage of the situation and offered subprime loans to those least able to afford them. That caused a housing bubble to form. Builders went hog wild, creating a housing surplus.

As the economy grew, interest rates went up. Thanks to the idiotic fine print in the variable rate mortgage loans, interest rates suddenly went up and borrowers suddenly found they were unable to pay the new rates, thus rapidly increasing the default rate.

As banks fared poorly, the Fed had to rapidly lower interest rates to prevent a banking crisis. This had the effect of reducing the value of the dollar, thus making oil more expensive.

To make things a lot worse, this admin made the brain-dead decision to turn food into gasoline. Using corn to stretch gasoline, food prices are dramatically higher. Brilliant.

Food prices are higher because fuel costs more because of a weak dollar and the use of corn-based ethanol. All of this leads to inflation and suddenly we find that businesses need to cut costs, so they lay off workers and the unemployment rate rises.

One thing leads to another but it all starts with Congress and monetary policy. The banking industry needs to be re-regulated. What people need to know is that Republicans are incapable of governing very well. They tend to screw everything up in their greedy quest for power and wealth. Democrats can govern but we’ve also seen how they can screw things up in Congress.

    Bottom line

It isn’t up to the president to fix this mess, it’s up to the Congress. Hillary warned about this mess over a year ago. She knows full well what needs to be done. If she were president, she’d be able to give Congress its marching orders. There’s a whole, long list of things that need to be done but that’s just for starters.

  • Patrick Henry

Nobama….Good Comments..I found that interesting..and Insightful…you are right about the Role and responsibility of Congress..but like the Nation..It has been divided and Paralyzed all during the Bush Administartion took its greedy and irresponsible Path to IRAQ..through lies and Deception …and has Not provided any Leadership to Break deadlocks and Division in Congresws for the Good of the nation..or only continued to Support the Destructive Policy of the Republicans in Spite of the Burdens of the war and its Cost..

NO responsible Leadership..like that provided by The dems and president Clinton..I’m talking about the economy, The Markets, the Dollar and Domestic policy…

As you pointed out..Rightfully…If The Bush administartion and rep[ublicans had really cared about whats best for the United states under the Circumstances ..it would have been to enact some Regulations and controls…Did They..NO..

Why Not..$$$ All the Matters is ..Who has the Power\
and WHAT THE $$$$$$” BOTTOM LINE” is..to hell with the Poor and Middle class..
But that would have been the responsible thing to do..if we had Reasponsible represenatives..

  • Kevin

Obviously yes… and considering the initial rioting reference(s) were to the ’68 convention – I’d have to ask what are you babbling about Hope?

Also – do you have any idea as to what the reasons for the Watts riots were, as opposed to the ’68 convention and by extension the “riot” Larry and others are expecting at this convention?

    LOL

  • Jeff

“If she were president, she’d be able to give Congress its marching orders.”

Yeah, ordering Congress around like that really worked well for Jimmy Carter.

Senators and Representatives actually don’t respond to well to “marching orders”. That attitude was the whole problem with Hillary’s health care plan, and would be the whole problem with her presidency, if it ever came to pass. She unfortunately has really poor managerial skills. This fact was in evidence in 1993, and it has been even clearer during this campaign.

Executives actually have to be able to bring people of opposing interests together. She’s godawful at that.

  • beebop

Don’t you have boots or an ass to lick somewhere?

I mean, Senator Obama has so much managerial skill. He couldn’t manageone committee meeting for Afghanistan because … get this …. he’s too busy running for president. Also, on Feb. 15, 2007, Obama also missed a committee hearing on U.S. ambassadors to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Guess he’s just a little too good for his current job!

  • beebop

It is a shame that you are refusing to read. Sadly, there are real people who can’t. Those news reports are out there. You’re not a superdelegate, so I really don’t give a shit about your flippant comments.

  • Nobama

It’s up to the president to lead, to provide the tone for the administration. It’s up to the president to tell Congress what’s expected of them on behalf of the people they represent. The people, the voters, are hurting because of a gross lack of leadership and the enactment of damaging policies.

Hillary can turn all of this around. She can set the agenda. The people who voted congress into office will demand that their representatives listen to her.

At the time of Hillary’s 1993-’94 healthcare efforts, she was just the First Lady. She wasn’t a member of congress or the president. Enormous insurance interests were allied against her and a certain Jim Cooper, now working for Obama. It’s no wonder Obama doesn’t have a plan for universal healthcare for the foreseeable future.

  • tzada

In my opinion based on research Obama has ties to terrorists, some domestic some foreign. Among them is Hamas. Hamas is a branch of the Muslim brotherhood, whose memo declares they will destroy America from within.

The Arabs have vast amounts of money, they have the oil. They can manipulate our oil supply and price thus driving the cost of everything in America UP. Thus dragging our country DOWN. Making someone whose promises with words as cloying as honey about CHANGE and HOPE. They can tip our election in favor of a person they have reason to believe is on their side.

Obama also has Penny Pritzker, a white woman as the mastermind of his campaign finance.
We also know she was on the Board of Superior Bank a Chicago-area thrift that was seized by federal regulators after it ran into problems with sub prime lending.

The sub prime mess is also driving the economic distress in the U.S If you traced today’s sub-prime crisis back to its origins, you would come upon the role of the Pritzkers and Superior Bank of Chicago. This has pushed thousands of homeowners toward foreclosure today.

It would be accurate to say the Pritzkers ran a very large nation-wide predatory lending operation. They targeted the very core of Obama’s supporters, blacks. Ms. Pritzker’s role in the bank failure, should undermines this candidate’s criticisms of sub prime lenders who target low-income borrowers.

    Yo Jeff!

Guess how many fingers I have up for you?

None! I’m just scratching my nose.

I’ve spoken to many people in the last few days just out of curiousity to see what they thought of Obama’s Fikle Finger of Fate.

Every person I spoke to knew exactly what he was doing.

But I understand one has to be purposely daft in order to support Obama.

Sort of the way that Obama played purposely daft about whether or not his past is a racist pig who hates America.

Hmmmm…..Simontoo, what do you think about global climate effecting crop yields….I mean this is seriously effecting yields due to both an increase of crops susceptable to pests and viruses as well as the problems with land use. Europe has rejected US genetically engineered crops and we still don’t know how well these seeds and genetically engineered species will do in Asia. They seem to do well in Africa where those micro farms policies are making inroads. I’m still quite a neophyte in this…I never paid much attention until about a year ago….I just see a gathering of storm clouds..and they could be over food and water instead of energy resources….Hmmmm…….

  • workingclass artist

Well….You would have to factor in the dust bowl….Thank god that we haven’t seen something like that even though we have had drout throughout the southwest and I think this is why we have a national grain reserve. What I’m concerned about is the international political instability as it seems perhaps many of the more stable western countries will become increasingly isolationist….I mean say the countries that are reliant on buying food from the west cannot buy in the qty. needed because thee countries are either low yielding or isolationist and protecting reserves….Egypt is having serious climate change problems and land use that is effecting yields….They are the tradtional bread basket to large portions of Africa and the middle east. Egypt is in trouble
    agriculturally speaking….

  • workingclass artist

I think that the recent riots in Haiti are an important indicator. We have a retty serious problem and I think the country will swing isolationist no matter who is in office. I think it may be unavoidable, but will most likely be temporary, until the reserves are rebuilt here and in Europe. I think the 3rd world as we have known it is going to be in serious trouble…..At least more than usual.

  • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

    Probably none of the above.

The public has a six week attention span.

Whatever happens between September 15 and November 4 will be the issues upon which the Presidency and the Congress are determined.

That’s just the way it is.
