But mostly, I just thought it was a rather Freudian study of a man struggling to find his niche. I also wondered at the time how much James Frey-ism was going on with the treatment of the people from Obama's past. Turns out it was similar with all the composite "characters." I really wanted to be impressed with Obama after the speech at the 04 convention. I really wanted him to be the real deal. But on every level I have found him to be more like an Elvis impersonator than the real Elvis. In my opinion, he's not on the same level as past inspirational leaders like Bobby Kennedy or MLK. He's the Jayne Mansfeild to their Marilyn. What he has is a great branding machine behind him. I've written advertising for over 20 years and the marketing of this candidate has been tremendous -- from the rather Pepsi-looking logo to the HOPE posters reminiscent of Soviet propaganda or something out of THey Live.
