Just to be clear, what you’re saying is you only want people who agree with you to post comments on your entries? If you don’t like the absurd and insulting “metaphorical burqa” observation perhaps you should scold the person who originally posted it. It’s interesting that when challenged a number of people on this thread resort to foot stamping, namecalling and misdirection instead of debate. How ironic that when your ideas are criticized you tell the person to shut up and go away. I thought you were upset about the lack of open and honest media?

I will say this one last time. Read my original comment and perhaps Docelder’s comments to see where I was going with it. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. And don’t attribute that metaphorical burqa thing to me — I didn’t say it.

Exactly. Media control and censorship has actually been enforceable in the past, during the First World War for example, only because the number of outlets was so few and the space they operated in so narrow. When the only real mass media were newspapers and movies, even the STATE, here in America, not the Taliban or whatever, came just this side of censorship by implementing “voluntary guidelines” for the news media to restrict coverage. It was as sophisticated and comprehensive a propaganda dissemination as any modern advertising agency that the proliferation of viewing options has put utterly out of the question.

Maybe it is the propaganda model in eduction that is making everyone so gullible ? Pick up an official student newspaper on most campuses and you’ll find it a much worse offender of liberal bias than any mainstream commercial press.

Pook: pm317′s comparison of the American media to the Taliban is ludicrous. As you can see, the commenters who agree with her are growing increasingly more hysterical and appear to have run out of rational points to make, if they ever had any in the first place. I wouldn’t waste too much time thinking about it if I were you.

I think the reference is more to the totalitarianism and control… in that totalitarianism on the part of the Taliban or the media is still totalitarianism. Smiley face totalitarianism maybe… but still.

We have so many choices for media I wonder what makes people say the media has control? Seriously, I’ve tried every medium (blogs, cable news, dead-tree newspapers read offline on parchment, MSM newspapers read on the Internet, twitter) and in the end I get the most comprehensive and nuanced information from reading the dead-tree newspaper with no screen.

But today I noticed a CNN screen in an elevator and it felt so intrusive – is that what makes you compare the media to the Taliban? Cuz just wait until newspapers and the free press are gone. Then we’ll have the Taliban. You think it’s bad now? Just wait.

I missed that somewhere. The only thing I might add is there is really no difference in oppression through the use of force and oppression by way of power abuse. Both can equally oppress. The Taliban uses force and the media uses power. Are they the same thing… not hardly. Can they both be oppressive and totalitarian? I think so. We have seen it. But maybe if the Tea Party people were all women, this wouldn’t be such an issue?
