Michael Scheuer, Bat Shit Crazy? [Video Update]

Michael Scheuer likes to project an image of calm detachment, but lurking beneath that seemingly placid exterior is a disturbed man. Don’t know who crazy Mike is? He started off at CIA as an analyst in the European Division. He was at best a mediocre talent, which is the major reason he found a new career in the Counter Terrorism Center (CTC). Truth be told the CTC was a dumping ground, particularly for many analysts who could not succeed in the mainline divisions.

So Scheuer emerges today braying like a mule on crack, hurling insults and calumny at folks, such as FBI Director Robert Mueller. Scheuer showed up on The O’Reilly Factor tonight and said that Mueller was “either a liar or an incomptent.” Being called an incompetent by Scheuer is like Mother Teresa being accused of mass murder by John Wayne Gacy.

Why the venom from the craven Scheuer? Simply because Robert Mueller had the audacity to report the truth that conventional methods of interrogation succeeded in gleaning critical intelligence from terrorist suspects. Mueller is not offering an opinion. He bases this conclusion on the actual experience of FBI Agents–Ali Soufan, Dan Coleman and Jack Cloonan–who actually interrogated real terrorists. Michael Scheuer not only has ZERO experience on this front, he has never had any training in this matter.

Consider the following about Scheuer’s “illustrious” career:

At one time Scheuer was put in charge of the effort to find and kill Osama Bin Laden. How did he do? Well, Osama is still walking around. And who did Scheuer assemble for the task of catching a Saudi Islamic fanatic? He hired only women from the Soviet Division of the Directorate of Intelligence. Not an Arabist among them. Not a single expert in Islam. No one who knew or understood the culture. Friends of mine at the CIA tell me that Scheuer was nicknamed, Charlie Manson, because of the cabal of women he collected for the task of getting Bin Laden.

Scheuer also hated the FBI. Just a couple of years ago Scheuer said that FBI Counter Terrorism Chief John O’Neill and National Security Counter Terrorism Chief Richard Clarke were responsible for 9-11. Let that bizarre comment sink in. Neither man hijacked any of the planes on 9-11. Neither trained or funded any of the hijackers. Both worked tirelessly to try to stop Bin Laden. Yet in Scheuer’s alternate universe they carry the blame. Heck of a job Mikey.

Lawrence Wright, in his best sellar, The Looming Tower, reports that Scheuer’s bosses ultimately removed him because they apparently lost faith in his competence.

Today (Tuesday) Scheuer is given the platform of the Washington Post to continue spewing his vile smears:

Now, in a single week, President Obama has eliminated two-thirds of that successful-but-not-sufficient national defense troika because his personal ideology — a fair gist of which is “If the world likes us more we are more secure” — cannot tolerate harsh interrogation techniques, torture or coercive interviews, call them what you will. Surprisingly, Obama now stands alongside Bush as a genuine American Jacobin, both of them seeing the world as they want it to be, not as it is. Whereas Bush saw a world of Muslims yearning to betray their God for Western secularism, Obama gazes upon a globe that he regards as largely carnivore-free and believes that remaining threats can be defused by semantic warfare; just stop saying “War on Terror” and give talks in Turkey and on al-Arabiyah television, for example.

Americans should be clear on what Obama has done. In a breathtaking display of self-righteousness and intellectual arrogance, the president told Americans that his personal beliefs are more important than protecting their country, their homes and their families. The interrogation techniques in question, the president asserted, are a sign that Americans have lost their “moral compass,” a compliment similar to Attorney General Eric Holder’s identifying them as “moral cowards.” Mulling Obama’s claim, one can wonder what could be more moral for a president than doing all that is needed to defend America and its citizens? Or, asked another way, is it moral for the president of the United States to abandon intelligence tools that have saved the lives and property of Americans and their allies in favor of his own ideological beliefs?

Michael Scheuer’s certainty in believing a pack of lies is beyond simply sad and pathetic. His attack on Mueller crosses not just the boundary of decency. It is dishonest.

If you want to understand how Christian men and women in Nazi Germany could efficiently manage death camps and calmly murder Jews–men, women and children–one need only watch the spectacle of a clown like Scheuer railing against people who believe in the rule of the law, the Constitution and the principle enshrined in the Declaration of Independence that individuals have fundamental, God granted rights that no man or law is entitled to snuff out.

In my opinion Scheuer needs some serious attention from a psychiatrist. I believe that Scheuer’s rantings are a stain on the CIA.

As I have written previously, there is a long list of experienced CIA Case Officers (the spies who actually work overseas) and FBI Agents who are repulsed by torture and know first hand that we can defeat terrorists and prevent attacks without behaving like immoral tyrants. Scheuer, who has no operational experience overseas, is in my view just a sadomasochistic voyeur who likes to talk tough but, when he had the chance to make a difference, dropped the ball.

    Larry,
So where do we go from here?
Do we have show trials that split the country and lead to endless tit for tat retributions and national suicide
    or
Do we just go forward and stop the apologizing and self loathing.

I know that 62% want to just move on…I’m a good example as I was originally against the war and never voted for Bush but now support our efforts in Iraq as conditions and events have changed.

O’Reilly makes my case very effectively and I would like you to comment on the fact that there were 4 heads of CIA to just 1 FBI shown on the board.

    • http://NoQuarterUSA.net Larry Johnson

Four heads of the CIA with ZERO, I REPEAT, ZERO FIELD EXPERIENCE. Four goddamn desk jockies who never got their hands dirty. For Christ’s sake, listen to the men who have actually been on the real frontlines. Not some wannabee back bencher like Scheuer.

And why didn’t O’Reilly bring on Ali Soufan or Dan Coleman or Bob Baer or Milt Bearden? He’s cooking the news and does not want anyone who has real experience to address the issue.

      • Seattle Moss

        Larry,
Thank you for that part of the answer…

        How about this part…

So where do we go from here?

        • andrew 191

Larry’s complete trashing of Mr. Scheuer has caused me to seriously reconsider the quality of people that are allowed into the CIA. If complete hacks like Scheuer are allowed in, I guess being in the CIA is no big deal, and no indication of significant personal achievement or integrity.

        Larry-

While I differ with many of your, may I say, “strong opinions”…I usually find myself in full agreement…Not this time, however. While I have no doubt, your assessments of your personal acquaintances, are right on target…I strongly disagree with your stance on interrogation methods…while your heart is in the right place…your stance of, enhanced methods should NEVER be used is not mine…I can understand your reasonings…but…this is a time never seen, in our nation….I want to see ALL the evidence…not PrezBo-Zo’s hand selected…and as I close with this last comment, I am certain I am speaking for the MAJORITY of the American people…here is my bottom line.

If ANY attacks were thwarted. If any American lives were saved. If more of the same will be accomplished, yet not using them cost ONE persons lives…then…GIVE ME THE BUCKET.

        NOBAMA!!!

        • http://noquarter foxyladi14

          i agree Larry.right on..

        • Phil Graves

If this is really the opinion of the majority of Americans (which I doubt) then Osama Bin Laden has won. His goal was to show the world that we were cowards who would throw away our beliefs if somebody bloodied our nose a little. You prove his point right here-our values as a nation mean nothing to you and you will throw away 240 years of world leadership and progress in human rights and resistance to tyranny in order to get revenge on some brown people.
Everything that the world admires us for has been thrown out by the Bush Cheney administration and the Obama administration is too lame to enforce the law. How would Germany have turned out if we had tortured people? Japan? See how Vietnam turned out because we did torture and abuse people. The torture didn’t even serve the crooked goals Cheney had for it, to justify invading the last cheap to produce oil fields left untapped in the world (production cost is less than 4.00 a barrel-you do the math). This weakness and cowardice and moral failure of Americans is the surest sign of our decline, not shaking hands with Chavez or the Saudis.

          • andrew 191

The polls do show that the majority of Americans don’t have a problem with enhanced interrogations. As for the rest of your post, I’m sure it resonates well with cretins, misanthropes, terrorists, progressive pinheads, morons, Democrats, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, and any other sociopaths that I left out.

Lawrence Wright, in his best sellar, The Looming Tower. One of the best books I have read in a while on this piece of history.

Mr. Johnson, is there a nick name among intel folks for when someone goes “24″ on you?

“the blond” was in the Sudan?

  • J

    Larry,

What’s driving me bat-shit is DNI Blair’s purported ‘ease’ regarding torture. I read where Blair approves of torture and I said ‘Whhhaaaatttt’?

  • TeakwoodKite

The integrity, intellect and reputations of Judge Michael Mukasey, Gen. Michael V. Hayden and others have now been besmirched by Obama…

Mr. Johnson, he starts his article with the romantic notion that we will have the perp in custody. If nukes go off, it will be cause we don’t.

Do you know what he is talking about in the quote above?

OT; Hayden reminds me of a James Cagney character. “You dirty rat…see?

And what is up with Mukasey? As the judge in the first WTT boming, I wonder why he was made AG. He reminds me of Elmer Fudd.

There, they have now been besmirched. oops. See? (nervous tick) see?

He reminds me of Elmer Fudd. There hav

“Mr. Johnson, he starts his article with the romantic notion that we will have the perp in custody.”

I read that too. I thought that it was sort of pervy, given Scheuwer’s infatuation with bin Laden.

  • Hot Librarian

Torture can not work if the tortured does not know much. Plenty of captives in this category.

But of the truly knowing ones – just phone the Vatican. They have al the records of the Inquisition .

Torture worked a treat for them -& the Pope is still God’s rep on earth.

    Howzat?

Thank you Larry for giving us some detail in Scheuer’s career. That part about Bin Laden and not having an Arabist, an expert in Islam or someone who knew or understood the culture is sheer incompetence and is ‘bat shit crazy,’ but to take it further by blaming Clarke and O’Neill for 9/11, it is a wonder Scheuer has any credibility as an expert for O’Reilly or the Washington Post.

It is strange to me to see such a fuss over an independent investigation into the torture abuses. Under Cheney’s/George W.’s/Rumsfeld’s watch, military personnel following orders were investigated, prosecuted and sentenced to prison terms for torture and inhumane activity at Abu Ghraib. Why was this perfectly acceptable then, and yet to simply investigate torture memos and policies now, will destroy our country and cause a civil war? Was torture wrong and illegal when the Abu Ghraib torturers were prosecuted under Bush Administration Justice, but torture is no longer wrong and illegal to investigate now?

Too bad the voices of distinguished persons such as yourself, Pat Lang, Robert Mueller, Ali Soufan, Dan Coleman and Jack Cloonan are being drown out by the likes of those Scheuer and others, as you say, who have zero experience or credibility.

Larry, I would love it if you could start a vacation service based on “Fantasy Island” only it would be “Torture Island” instead. Free vacations for all those who don’t believe waterboarding is torture, and believe that torture is no big deal, as guests for a frolicking week of sadomasochistic pleasure, in the fashion you described in an earlier post, abductions, waterboarding and more.

I’m with you CG. Any one can call me what ever they want but I am tired of the MSM telling me when to move on. Give the bankers who destroyed our economy a pass, but strip search my neighbor for a parking ticket? Give Jeff Imelt (GE) a pass after he goes on national tv to sucker Americans into buying GE stock? Has anyone looked into what Imelt did with his GE stock during the two weeks that followed his promise to pay dividends?

Last week I read about the travesty of universal default (if you miss a payment on one credit card every card you hold can up your rate in punishment). How did that become ok? No wonder my neighbor had to start going to the food shelves last November and every time I turn on the tv I hear that kid singing about what happens if you default on your credit card.

I wish all Americans would get together and default in unison, in solidarity, it would be patriotic in my opinion. When a universal default law can be passed there is no one, and I mean NO ONE standing up for us.

…and yet to simply investigate torture memos (banking abuses, pork spending, congressional corruption, etc.) and policies now, will destroy our country and cause a civil war?

      • Baba Rum Raisin

        >>> Last week I read about the travesty of universal default (if you miss a payment on one credit card every card you hold can up your rate in punishment).

They pulled that crap on me and wouldn’t back off. One card (AMEX) to whom I didn’t even owe any money, cut me off.

I proceeded to run ALL of them up to the limit (except my Credit Union card) within the Law and then took Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Cost those bastards in excess of $60,000 to try to screw me once for $244…and my car is paid off and Mortgage was/is in good shape.

Cost to me? 40 FICO points.

F**k them. F**k them one and all…the Easy ones Twice!

A superbly informative post, Larry. Thank you.

  • Katmoon

Thank you Larry. IT is necessary for anyone wanting to truly understand this situation, to not cherry pick the revealing of the facts involved. The media does not all of a sudden become credible in fact sharing, when they insist on pushing the inexperienced to support their arguments. To simplify, I don’t work on my own teeth, and I don’t go to a banker to work on my teeth, I go to the Dentist. Same with the experts on understanding the effects of torture versus interrogation, I prefer experience over mouth pieces searching to find a way to stroke a bruised ego. Your consideration to explore this problem to help us have a fact set to understand, is very needed and appreciated.

  • Elliott

The torture apologists are becoming unhinged. Those that are involved or have been gleeful supporters of this obscenity are reaching the point where they have to change their mind with all of the evidence showing it never works except in the mind of Dick Cheney, or continue and become pariahs. Many of us are not going to put up with their loony $(!# any longer and let them shout us down. I think some will be recanting soon. The lawyers are looking at disbarment.

An amazing and informative blog post, thanks!

Hiring no arab language specialists, no arab culture specialists, just soviet specialists in the unit tasked with finding Bin Laden!? That is just astonishing; it’s comical, laughable, chilling.

  • Peggy Sue

Wow, Larry. I’ve listened to this guy. Scheuer is always trotted out as “the” CIA expert and is quick to give his creds–the go-to guy on all things jihadi. To discover he’s a lame blowhard is just another nail in the coffin for what press coverage we’re getting.

We’ve clearly gone through the looking glass. Actually, it makes me feel a bit queasy.

    Thanks for the continuing information.

  • Elizabeth

The first few times I saw Scheuer after 9/11, he made some sense. Now he comes off nothing more than a deeply weird, cynical isolationist ranting about the Holocaust, condemning Israel and the American Jewish lobby louder than a remarkable, “resistance fighter” bin Laden ?? Little wonder he was never caught.

Being a Ron Paul supporter doesn’t help either, but advocating sealing off some Middle Eastern borders and ours with Canada and Mexico…Childish tantrums to go against environmentalists, womens’ rights activists, Jay Leno’s wife…(really, really weird…)…The guy is simply unhinged.

    • termo

There is also something disturbing about someone who feels that must address everyone as “Mr.” or “Ms.” rather than by their given name. You get a sense that the man is, like you said, “unhinged.”

  • http://despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

    This is deja vu.

I was attracted to this blog while vetting Scheuer.

I had checked out a copy of “Through Our Enemies’ Eyes, read part of it, determined it was worth a few bucks and ordered a copy of the paperback.

Wow, the second edition was a real door stop. Evidently the book sold so well that he was able to browbeat his editor into including all the superfluous crap which made the original readable. So I decided to find out more about the windbag.

“Scheuer also hated the FBI. Just a couple of years ago Scheuer said that FBI Counter Terrorism Chief John O’Neill and National Security Counter Terrorism Chief Richard Clarke were responsible for 9-11.”

It pisses you off even more when you note that the only way O’Neill got information out of Scheuer’s group was to smuggle the documents out in his pants.

You can also get downright livid when you reflect that John O’Neill is still somewhere under the WTC.

  • Brian

    Hello.

Any thoughts on why Scheuer testified before a Congressional committee to the effect of being happy that ex-FBI counterterrorism expert turned WTC security agest John O’Neill was killed? He said in his superblunt style and it went by without comment.

    thanks.
