Rezko May Cut A Deal In Federal Corruption Case

Mike Parker CHICAGO (CBS) ― The prosecution is preparing to rest its case as the politically charged corruption trial of Antoin “Tony” Rezko rolls toward its climax.

There’s speculation Friday that Rezko could be ready to cut a deal.

CBS 2′s Mike Parker reports prosecution witness and real estate developer Ali Ata spent another day on the witness stand. The longtime friend of Rezko claimed Rezko got him a job running the State Finance Authority in return for big money campaign contributions to Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

“After Stuart Levine, Tony Rezko had a lot to be thankful for, and his lawyers did a great job,” said CBS 2 legal analyst Stuart Levine. “Then comes Ali Ata, the last major witness and I think the roller coaster is going the other way right now. He was a tremendous witness for the government.”

Rezko’s defense attorney, Joe Duffy cross examined Ata Friday and asked him about being questioned by the FBI after the Spet. 11 terrorist attacks. Duffy asked him if his name was the same as one of the attackers, Mohammed Atta.

“Similar,” Ata said.

Duffy: “Of course you had nothing to do with the 2001 attacks.”

Ata bristled: “Come on, Mr. Duffy, let’s not go there.”

Duffy: “I’m not going there.”

As the trial winds down, speculation is rampant that Rezko may yet cut a deal, plead guilty and tell the government everything he knows.

“If Joe Duffy and Tony Rezko knew that Ali Ata was going to be a witness in the case to bolster the testimony of Stuart Levine, that would have been a major consideration before this trial even started,” Miller said.

Ata’s testimony, perhaps the last in the government’s case, should come to an end Monday.

Then comes a defense case attorneys say will be brief.

The judge says she wants closing arguments to the jury a week from next Monday, May 12.

Thanks so much for revisiting the chicken-shit aspect of Obama. I was thinking about it just last night.

Maybe Obama should agree to debate Hillary with one caveat, she allows him to send a surrogate as a substitution: a brick.

At least with the brick:

We won’t hear any deception nor misdirection nor propaganda.

The brick will be more interesting, original and won’t answer only by stating “I agree with Senator Clinton.”

The brick won’t try to deflect the Ayer’s controversy by claiming Ayer’s is Mr. Rogers, just some guy in the neighborhood who likes to darn a cardigan while wearing sneakers.

And it won’t keep repeating “…in no uncertain terms…” to appear to be eloquent and prove more intelligence than an amoeba.

But Simon, what would it mean that Rezko cut a deal with the Gov.? On the one hand here would be no doubt in public he is guilty. But politically what else would unfold from this?

How can we trust someone who is too afraid to debate one-on-one with a candidate, to stand up to the despots of the world? It takes alot of spine to look someone you disagree with in the eye and tell them where to go. It is gallingly apparent that Obama doesn’t possess that spine.

If Rezko’s deal includes testifying, it could be … interesting … for Obama.

Obama contends that 21 debates are enough. I disagree. Only 4 debates (if you include the “compassion, religious” debate) have been between HC & BO. He was content to debate when he had all the “boyz” around him to gang up on HC and deflect the heat from him.
At least one more debate between the two, before the next primary, is essential. I think a Lincoln-Douglas debate without a moderator is a great idea. No gotchas, no bias, no preferential treatment.
A President has to think and act quickly in many instances. In those situations, critical thinking and good instincts are paramount. There are no telepromptors, no surrogates, no prepared talking points or campaign guidebooks.
I want to see HIM react under pressure without anyone else telling him what to do or say.

I read that the judge and “other” interested parties have made concerted efforts to keep information from the public. Obama’s name has come up several times regarding relationships between witnesses on both sides. Not in terms of corruption, but in an intertwined web of associations. The testimony leaves no doubt that BO knew and had associations with most of the parties involved.

Obama met Ayer after Michelle met Bernadine Dorhn at law firm she joined. Dorhn a senior at firm joined in black separatist/liberation marxist theology and political action. Friendship with Ayer was part of the political cred necessary to make it in Chicago politics.

Indiana and North Carolina Democrats, your help is needed to avert a trainwreck awaiting us in Puerto Rico. In the U.S. territory, citizens do not vote in presidential general elections, but they are given a voice in the Democratic primary.

Puerto Rico’s Democratic party decided, on March 8 of this year, to hold a primary rather than a caucus to allocate it’s 55 delegates. This decision was made after it became clear that in a close contest, the total popular vote — no matter how skewed a figure, due to the mix of primary and caucus states — would become an important number in discussions about the nomination. States that had already had their caucuses, in full accordance with the rules established before the primary season began, did not have the re-do option.

Colorado and Puerto Rico have been allocated the same number of pledged delegates, 55. With Puerto Rico holding a primary with an expected turnout of at least a million voters, its popular vote will likely equal the total caucus votes of Colorado PLUS the primary votes of South Carolina, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Utah, combined. Puerto Rico will thus have a popular vote equivalent vote strength of 160 pledged delegates, rather than their allocated 55.

If the perception is widespread that Obama won the delegate count but lost the popular vote, it will weaken our Democratic nominee and cause feelings of resentment among Clinton supporters. Our best hope of winning in the fall is with a strong nominee who was fairly chosen because he won the most pledged delegates and the most popular votes. What is interesting to me in this election is how the american main stream press has dictated what change is = Obama.
Clinton represents change as well and yet she is portrayed as status quo. Within the party long time democratic members react to Obama as both an agent of negative change by virtue that he also seems to represent the old power brokerage of the Left. Clinton’s supporters like how reminiscent she is of past party heroes and in today’s politics she seems to offer the change back to what the party used to be.
The ironies in this election continue to build….I prefer to look at some positives. Clinton has reawakened interest in the political process and a renewed respect for wonkiness. Obama while initially generating excitement has exposed a ruinous flaw within the party. This flaw he has exploited for the reason of winner take all at what ever the cost. In this primary Clinton supporters seek the change they desire by seeking to preserve the principles of the party. A true conundrum…No?

From the day she announced her candidacy, I’ve been convinced that HRC cannot win the GE. Any polls that show Clinton beating McCain today are just as accurate as the polls 6 months ago that indicated Clinton would get 60+% of the vote in the primary.

Limbaugh et al. have deliberately held their fire. If HRC is nominated, there will be months of ranting about the violation of the spirit of the 22nd amendment to install the Clinton co-presidency for a third term. Among many other rants.

Given the virtual certainty the Obama will lead in pledged delegates after June 3, even after seating FL and MI delegates as selected at their state conventions (a net 60 for Clinton), large numbers of Obama supporters will feel cheated and betrayed if Obama is not the nominee. HRC will not have enthusiastic support among some core Demo voting blocks, if she wins the nomination without coming in first place in the contest for earned delegates. It will make it even more imposible for her to win, imo.

As an Obama supporter, I think that Michigan and Florida must be counted. The voters cannot be punished for the antics of their politicians — not if the Democrats want to have a chance to win in FL and MI in the fall. I hope and expect to see this happen in June:

It is my expectation that Obama will end the primary season June 3 with a pledged delegate margin of about a hundred votes.

Shortly thereafter, the DNC and Obama’s campaign will announce they will recommend that the credentials committee seat the Florida and Michigan delegations selected at their state conventions, giving Clinton a 60 net delegate gain. Obama will continue to lead the total pledged delegate count by about 40 votes.

A few hundred superdelegates will announce their committment to vote for Obama at the convention. Obama will be the presumptive nominee, AND Michigan and Florida will have been counted in the total.

If the situations were reversed, and Clinton was ahead by any number of pledged delegates, she would be the nominee. To do anything else would leave her supporters feeling severely alienated and cheated. The Democrats won’t do that to either side. Since Obama will almost certainly be in the lead, he will be the nominee.

I hope that the Democrats can then unite around Obama, our nominee, and win in November.

When the primaries are over, Hillary would have won more popular votes than any other candidate in the race. Therefore, if Obama is the nominee, it will be HILLARY supporters who will “feel cheated” – because they WOULD HAVE BEEN CHEATED.
