MO, Pick a Cause and Run with It

Let me first set the context for what I am about to say. From the WaPo:

First lady Michelle Obama called her “current life” in the White House “a very blessed situation, because I have what most families don’t have — tons of support all around, not just my mother, but staff and administration. I have a chief of staff and a personal assistant, …

She didn’t stop there but went on to say this:

“and everyone needs that. Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants,” Obama said with a laugh as she spoke before a crowd of business executives meeting today during a “Corporate Voices for Working Families” conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Video below the fold.

Fine, she said it with a laugh and to a laughter from the audience. Funny comedienne, America’s first lady.

Seriously, what is the problem with the Obamas? They acted as if they were doing us a favor running for the presidency, and now they act like they are still doing us a favor. On top of that is their sense of entitlement and that we all owed them something. They have no concept of public service other than to manipulate that idea to win, and win they did.

Here is the simple problem I have with MO.

We, the taxpayers are not giving her a full time hair and makeup person to make her look pretty for the cameras. We give her that so she does not have to spend inordinate amount of her time on such frivolous things.

We, the taxpayers are not giving her a chief of staff or a personal assistant to make her daily existence easy. We give her that so she can do some good with the power, and the privilege given to her by her office.

She is not some corporate executive’s wife attending parties in her cocktail dresses. She is the other face of America. I would say to her “use it to the good of the community, the country, and perhaps the world.” She comes into this position empty-handed and with not even a sense of humility, responsibility, or desire to do some good and help others in need.

Remember this video/interview where she said “he hasn’t done anything yet,” when asked about Obama’s presidential bid?

Well, she has not done anything yet, either.

MO, pick a cause and run with it. They gave you all the power, the privilege, and the visibility to do something meaningful with your current station in life. It is not just enough to marvel how an AA woman of middle class upbringing can rise to the level you did — that is America for you — but to move beyond that in service to others who chose you.

One more thing, don’t believe all those patronizing words from sycophants around you — see Susan’s post on Sally Quinn’s idiotic display of such meaningless words published on the front page in none other than the WaPo (Quinn must have a backdoor entry there). It does not amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things.

Here is my problem with the MSM and the entire Obama issue: they keep jabbering that he is the “best president”, she is the “best First Lady”, they are fashion icons, historical icons, the “best” at whatever they say and do. No room for contemplation or criticism when the man has been president for a mere 4 months.

He has managed to break every campaign promise made so far yet if you listen to the coverage you would think that this was his original “plan”. He keeps much of the Bush policies on record and again the apologists fail to question but bend over backwards to explain that this too is part of the “plan”.

She runs around in $500 sneakers and is applauded and excused for being a little ostentatious in the face of a faltering economy while insisting that everything said and done by these two is meritorious.

Let them each sink or swim under their own weight for once since they each bargained for these roles and let the MSM step aside for once and become objective in the coverage. But insisting that these two are the “best” only strengthens my opposition as I see plenty there to criticize and question.

    • Patience

Well put PJ — my feelings exactly.

…see Susan’s post on Sally Quinn’s idiotic display of such meaningless words published on the front page in none other than the WaPo (Quinn must have a backdoor entry there).

What do you mean by “backdoor entry”?

    • FLDemFem

It means she gets published not because she is a good reporter, but because she is married to Ben Bradlee, former executive editor and current VP at large for the WaPo.

I thought that MO was supposed to be taking on military families as her project..what happened with that? Has she done anything for them, other than a photo op or two when she made the announcement? Has she done anything for the families of the wounded and maimed veterans who spend their lives trying to get medical care for their family member? Has she asked her husband, the Commander in Chief, to ease their burdens with an executive order telling the military not to diagnose TBI as pre-existing PTSD so they can get the help they need instead of no help? Has she done anything for any family but her own?? Anybody??

  • I’m a Linda too

You nailed it. But I do believe she feels blessed, she is just living the high life, nothing she normally would have, all on our backs.

She will continue doing what she wants and she doesn’t have to pay a penny or lift a finger to live the life of luxury. That’s what it was all about for her. Yes, she felt owed, but also, she know she is living way beyond her means, too.

Do good? HA! MObama? The lady who used her husbands Senate Seat to get him to propse legislation to benefit her hospital and then double her salary? Surely you jest. MObama is lining up her next money after the White House. Patrick Fitzgerald better get those phones calls a listening to.

  • Tom Cat “wodie j” Jefferson Esq

excellent post! The Obama’s haven’t a clue what it’s all about and neither do their followers or they would not whine and cry every time they are justly criticized. As they say “birds of a feather, flock together”….

spending $328k on a photo op, and all this other party crap when people are hungry and losing their homes. What’s wonderful about that??

I personally know some very wealthy individuals — and these particular people do for others more in the morning than MO has done in her lifetime.

One works tirelessly for animal welfare and human welfare — a hospice in particular plus other projects. She is a leader and through her leadership a lot of good works are done. (Sort of like Cindy McCain).

Another example — one couple makes sure that the poor children on a Caribbean island have Christmas gifts and a party. They also quietly support other projects world wide.

Then there are the “newly rich” folk like the Obamas — who brag about their “stuff” and their “staff”. They are mean — just like MO. I would HATE to be on her staff — I expect that she has an attitude like the diva Oprah. I’ve seen how these newly rich behave.

MO and 0zero have no depth — they are strictly surface phonies. Like the article last week — they are the “Obama” brand.

They are exactly like their 0bot supporters — self centered & shallow. I expect that the tax returns of 0bots show very little charitable giving.

What bugs me most about these two parasites is that they can’t even fake empathy for others — that’s how far out of touch they are with reality.

My rant yields the 0 description — Parasites.

I am sick of them both…
they have not done anything of import..
and yet they have been in our face and shoved down our throats..it seems forever…
Although, many would argue to the contrary..the Obamas exemplify the banality, and inane quality of our culture. They are brands, and they are presented to us in little snippets, like commercial ads on tv…
I do not get a sense of a protracted devotion to service..instead..
I get a sense of photo ops..designed to present a picture to cover reality!
In this time of severe financial woes, if the Obamas see fit to party and serve imported Japanese Steak, and wear 550 dollar running shoes to feed the homeless at a food bank..do you really expect one worthwhile cause to get her attention..
the whole lot of them are riddled with the ADHD that their misbegotten power allows!

    • PJ

Absolutely on the mark! These two would not have a clue of what real “sacrifice” entails. And they are so busy shoving their lifestyle in our faces and expecting us to get all excited about it just makes me dislike them as people more and more each day.

The press insists on painting this man something he is not or has yet to achieve. Mother Theresa never experienced this much “love” and she at least was actively out there doing something.

      • FranSC

The 0bamas are much more interested in being role models for AA. It is all about being AA for them and ruling in the WH as well as for their supporters. The white supporters like Sally Quinn can’t get enough of that either – it’s like humoring a child, an old person, or an alzhimer patient. It is patronizing.

The AA’s are beside themselves with joy, in fantasy land about this new president and family, and it does not matter what they believe in or whether they agree on things. That is the unimportant part. That goes for the wealthy, the poor, the liberal or conservative AA. It’s about being AA and in the WH. That’s what it is about for even the likes of Colin Powell. That should be humiliating to someone of his statue to stoop as low as he stooped to make his comments about the rupublicans and Rush Limbaugh yet not offering any suggestions on how the republicans can improve themselves. It is defensiveness about the AA POTUS.

I find it curious that the Obamas want to appear humble and giving to rogue nations and dictators, but make every effort to appear almost over-confident, arrogant, and in charge to the citizens of THIS country. They are a disgrace to this country and to the WH.

She just wants everyone to know she has servants in all areas of the job of First Lady. What an incredibly s-t-u-p-i-d thing to get up and tell *business* women. Did she think she was helping them out by telling them arrogantly, “This is the way you handle trying to do it all.” Get yourself what I have!

In fairness, perhaps she was trying to say something more appropriate, but it fell flat if that indeed was the case.

When you bring people in who have worked in very recent history with organizing people on the streets of Chicago, what can you expect. They were both right when they said in 2006, “We are not ready for that.” Indeed they were not and it shows.

I am under the impression the pay for the hair stylist and make up artist is paid by the personal income of the Obamas, not a tax payer expense. I bet though they are being charged greatly reduced rates.
Even so, it’s kind of a smack in the face how people who are in desperate straights & are in the food line are given a pep talk by Mrs Obama about how she feels their pain while wearing her $500 sneakers after having her hair done by a professional and her children taken to school by a chauffeur.

Frankly, Mrs. O should do her own hair and makeup and that thousands of dollars a year spent on styling professionals should be donated to charities that help those less fortunate. Frankly, I think that’s putting her money where her husbands mouth is with all his crap about how we must all sacrifice for the good of the country. When I see the Obamas actually make a sacrifice, then I’ll believe they are sympathetic to what the country is going through.

This was my point when we were discussing her law degree, which she just put aside. I believe the public–or her school–paid for her education, and she is STILL doing nothing with it.

The new version of the 50′s stay-at-home mom is designed to ingratiate her with the latte liberal moms who, as Chris Tingle pointed out about her, made a choice to stay home. They walk around feeling so superior about their “choice,” when they could not have made that choice if their husbands weren’t making enormous amounts of money.

Well good for them, but most mothers nowadays on our shrinking middle-class incomes don’t have that choice and must work. The O’s don’t seem to understand that and don’t care about the majority of Americans.

    • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

I believe the state of Illinois helped her make the decision to put aside, or in legal parlance, surrender her license to practice law about four years after she graduated.

It seems there was a problem with some illegalities with insurance, otherwise known as fraud.

      Google it. It’s there.

    • pacificisland

Sorry, but I know many, many women (and some men) who stay at home and they do go without to live on one salary to raise their kids. And, yes, some of them have spouses who are professionals or have a business, but they are far from “rich” – they don’t get new cars every year, they don’t all have housekeepers or gardeners, they don’t all live in McMansions, they don’t eat out every night, or wear furs and diamonds. The working-out-of-the-home spouse often works long hours, and is not available to help with household chores (which the stay-at-home spouse manages) or to help with the kids.

They do try to save for their kids education and retirement, pay for own health care, pay off student loans, etc., all that and just living day to day makes them far from wealthy – even if the working spouse has a “good” income. If both spouses worked they would make far more, but the kids would be raised by nannies or spend long days in day care.

Maybe when they are about 50, they can start making more money (student loans paid off, etc.), but that comes after years of sacrifice and hard work. I guess this will all change under Obama – tax receipts are falling off a cliff (down 30%) – whey work and sacrifice so much for 20 or 30 years, just to give it away to others who have no interest in work or sacrifice for anything – themselves or their families.

      • Diana L. C.

But I know many women who do not sacrifice much when they make that choice. They still have it better than most women have.

Yes, as the child of a 50′s/60′s stay-at-home mom, I know the blessings of having a mom at home. And I do know also how much more stuff I could have had if she had decided to work.

What I am saying is that she is displaying the lifestyle of a very few–those who can make the choice to quit working, while still enjoying an affluent lifestyle (not just AS affluent as they might otherwise have). It’s an elitist lifestyle.

    • pacificisland

Remember she did not ‘put aside’ her law degree. She was asked ‘politely’ to put aside her law degree by the Illinois Bar Association.

      • Diana L. C.

In the last thread about this, I didn’t see proof that this happened, so I won’t go there.

What I did see is explanation about why she might choose to put it aside. That is, she could then avoid having to do what it takes to renew it and to be able to quit paying malpractice insurance.

What I didn’t see is any feeling of responsibility on her part to make use of an education that some other affirmative action AA might have liked in her stead, one who would use it for good.

Everyone wants “socialism” (not everyone, but those who think it’s a good idea) until they get a taste of what is means to be PRIVILEGED, and then socialism or redistribution of wealth applies to everyone but them. The Obamas are no exception. They are finding out how nice it is to be special, go to the most expensive restaurants and order the most expensive food (on other people’s money) and buy expensive clothes and have adoration at their doorstep. The Obamas are major hypocrites. Would they give up their expensive dinners so the homeless person down the block could eat? Not in this lifetime, nor any other.

  • jbjd

I vividly recall what MO ‘looked like’ during the primary campaign, before her ‘makeover.’

“We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we’re asking young people to do,” she tells the women. “Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.” Faced with that reality, she adds, “many of our bright stars are going into corporate law or hedge-fund management.”

    http://www.qando.net/details.aspx?Entry=8001

Leaving corporate law for MO meant, working at a community hospital at the pay rate of $316,000 (http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2006/09/hospital_offici.html)For BO, this meant, collecting $8,000 retainer from Robert Blackwell while a part-time IL state senator. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-killerspin27apr27,0,6789688.story

As to MO’s pointed advice to her audience of young women not to work at a law firm or hedge fund… Recall that HRC worked for the Rose Law Firm for several years; and Chelsea is a hedge-fund manager.

    • jbjd

Sorry, that was $8,000/month retainer BO got from Robert Blackwell (of Killerspin fame)…

    • lusitania

of course, that is why MO said what she did about being a hedge fund manager, corporate lawyer…to draw a comparison depicting HRC as greedy, while the Obama’s were more honorable for making the great sacrifices they did. BS…BS…BS.

  • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

And remember that 316,000 salary came AFTER Barack secured some favors for the hospital.

They are a product of the current American Idol culture. Appearances are everything, so don’t bother to look behind the facade to see what’s really there. How can they be talked about as being the “best of”, when he has only been the President for 4 months? It’s ridiculous. One can only hope that such a fast rising star, will not have any staying power, since it has risen, soley based on ill conceived beliefs. I still say there is no there there and these idiots, such as Sally Quinn, will not be able to continue their worship, based on what they want to believe, versus the reality of what the Obamas are really about. They are self serving, no nothings, who do not do the hard work, wouldn’t dream of doing the hard, and believe they are so deserving/entitled to all the perks the office of the Presidency has to offer. How long are people going to continue whining about an election that didn’t go their way? Get over it! This happens to a significant portion of the population once every 4 years. It has been since the country was founded. Life is too damn short to spend 4 years depressed and angry. Depression and anger accomplish absolutely nothing.

I wasted 8 years angry and depressed about the obvious fraud that was George W Bush. I kept wondering when people would finally wake up. All I got was 8 years of anger and depression, and 8 years older. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether anyone actually awakened or not.

Politics seems like a delusional state by its very nature. It’s something that takes over in place of rational thought. We should be talking about real problems and actual solutions. Instead, we do politics.

    • Diana L. C.

The election didn’t go our way because we had a “selection,” not an election. The fact that the election was not really run as it should have been run makes it not an election at all. So we are angry and depressed because we miss our democracy, and that is not something we should get over.

I was angry over the last two Bush elections and got over it.

I was angry over the elections that put Reagan, and Bush I in the White House and got over it.

I was angry when Nixon was put in office and got over it.

I was angry many times before, but I always got over it because I had not been convinced that the democratic process had been seriously undermined, and so my anger was directed more at the general public who voted for candidates I didn’t think were right–especially, “W.”

I don’t think this perpetual candidate that we have in the WH is the right person either, and it makes me angry at the uneducated who voted for him. But I am also, and more importantly, angry because I do not believe that he would be there if some serious fraud had not occurred that totally undermined the democratic process.

If you believe otherwise, leave this site and go somewhere else. Most on this site believe as I do.

I may be depressed a little about this, but the denial and unfounded sense of superiority you display makes me feel sorry for you that you have to come here to justify yourself to yourself.

What the hell are you talking about? We are having fun here. UBM has the best comment, don’t you think?

    …is CAUSING a little grumpiness

The grumps have been out the last couple of days.

Is it the undercurrent of unrest among the average Joes and Josephines that’s making those with embedded issues unable to get some humor in their lives?

Fun. Get some before it’s outlawed.

    outlawed or worse TAXED……..

    LOL!

Just bought Il Divo tickets for a ladies night out. I think fun is already being taxed.

But, I’m sure Obama will find a way to fund his government on the backs of the citizens.

The entire time MO is lamenting that all women don’t have her personal assistants and entire support crew, she’s telling us that she knows how hard it is for a working mother. I beg to differ with her because she doesn’t have an effin’ clue. She, with her $300K plus salary, with her private/lab school right there by her work, with her mother and husband and a million dollar plus house is crying about how tough it is. Give me a break.

Because her comments are crass and uncouth. Why not talk about the money they make as the first couple? They are nothing but low-class parvenues!
