Party Cracking Up? And Do You Even Care?

Marc Ambinder writes that the polling results show the Democratic party with deep fissures. Right now, I’m so disgusted with the party that I don’t give a damn if it goes down in flames.

These primary voters may get some SELF-satisfaction out of voting for Barack Obama because it makes THEM feel good, but they are not THINKING AHEAD to the general election — when John McCain will easily trounce Obama if he’s the general election nominee.

Here’s what Ambinder wrote:

Forget the horse race numbers for a moment: if the surveys are accurate, the polarization within the Democratic Party has reached critical levels. Nearly six in ten Obama supporters in Indiana say they would be dissatisfied if Clinton were the nominee — that’s (I believe) the high percentage of Obama supporters who have ever said that.

In both IN and NC, two thirds of Clinton supporters say they’d be dissatisfied if Obama were the nominee — I believe that’s the highest number recorded for that question, too.

The percentage of Clinton voters who say they’d choose McCain over Obama in a general election is approaching 40% in Indiana. Put it another way: in North Carolina, less than HALF of folks who voted today for Hillary Clinton are ready to say today that they’d definitely vote for Obama in a general election.

The basic demographic breakdowns suggest that the black/white split has widened as well …

Frankly, my dears, I don’t give a damn. If the primary voters can’t think far enough ahead to anticipate who has the best chance of beating John McCain, they deserve their fate.

I am disgusted.

I hope Hillary keeps fighting with all she’s got. She — and we — know that she is the only candidate who has a realistic chance of beating John McCain.

REASON ONE: She is vastly stronger on national security issues than Obama, who has ZERO national security experience or knowledge.

REASON TWO: She knows what to do about our economic crisis, and Obama doesn’t even understand the capital gains tax — illustrated in that last ABC debate when Charlie Gibson had to explain it to him.

REASON THREE: She has ten times the stamina that Obama has. He has looked worn out, bored, distracted, and his mind isn’t working sharply. She is sharper than ever, and energized.

God I wish people would stop voting for someone just because he has a skin color they like, or it assuages their white guilt, and use some COMMON SENSE.

I will soon be and independent if the Democratic party shoves Obama down my throat. I have never been racist in my life but today part of the party that I worked for calls me racist. I think people really need to educate themselves on what the word racist really means. It is certainly an energy charged, loaded word.
It doesn’t mean because you disagree with someone or because you don’t like someone who happens to be of another color.
We all have prejudices, preferences over ideals, etc. That doesn’t make a person a racist.
I am sick of that word. I haven’t ever heard it so much in so many ways and so out of context.

I have to agree with you there. If the party doesn’t let this election roll and count EVERY frigging vote, I’m registering as an independent and the DNC can forgot about my shitty little couple hundred bucks that I shell out every Presidential election cycle. If there are others out there like me, those little checks might add up.

I may be off-base, but in Hillarys interview by Joe S on his show yesterday morning, the question of the Gas Tax came up, and of course Hillary explained it brilliantly. I cannot remember all the dialog but Joe said he agreed with Hillary’s reasoning because it was not democrat. Hillary said something to the effect that this is where the dems have made a big mistake, for so many years – not adressing the concerns of the working person.

I know she and Bill have been essentially part of the core of the democratic party, but I just wonder if they would entertain the notion of a party change? A NEW party…. Basically having many of the ideals of the democrats, but then combine some of the practicalities of the Repubs… I know, I know shame on me for even considering… But SOME repubs aren’t too bad. Even Hillary seems to think so! The democrats have all but turned their backs on Hillary and I for one am fed up with all the stupidity going on. I say if they want Obama, then they DESERVE him! I for one won’t be around. Count me in for a new party!

I am disgusted at the monolithic black vote (91% to 93%). This isn’t just identity politics, it is racism – they know he can’t win in the GE, they know that the Clintons are not racist and still they rally around a man who is only half black and has completely ignored them. Also, Donna Brazile said on CNN tonight that the Democratic Party is changing and “we” don’t need the votes of working class people anymore. She stated the Party is younger and more educated and that is the New Democratic Party.

Personally I voted for Obama because I trust him much more. Clinton seems more of a “say anything to get elected” type. I also think that he has the type of personality and charisma to get things done that Clinton could not get done. If Obama gets the nomination my reason for not supporting him will have nothing to do with the fact that my candidate lost. It will because I do not support Obama. Plain and simple. He has no experience to be President. He is all talk and no show. And after three years, maybe less, he will get bored with the routine and want to move on to something else. Mr. Music. – I want to congratulate you on being one of the more civil Obama supporters that I have come across in the blogosphere. But I think you misjudge many people’s reasons for opposing Obama in the fall. We are mostly older and used to supporting candidates who are eliminated in the primaries.

It is more personal with Obama than with most others. I respect that Wright and Ayers are non-issues for you, but many of us are offended by Obama’s association with them, we have been insulted by his prominent supporters (Huffington, Jackson Jr, etc.) and have enough respect for Christians and hunters to be annoyed by his “cling to guns and religion” comment.

My personal biggest fear is that his non-universal health care plan will delay real universal health care by decades.

And McCain is not Bush – global warming, torture, and a balanced budget are just three of the many differences between them.

The caucuses alone were a major joke, but in addition to that, everyone knows Hillary could easily win a re-vote in the Michigan and Florida primaries. I find him, frankly, to be a bit stupid–he may be well educated, but he flunked common sense. The Ummming and Awwwing, the missteps when approaching foreign policy issues, the oddball friendships with incredibly “iffy” people, from Rezko to Ayers and beyond, his INSANE and way too close association with the Crown family, and his perpetually pissed off way of speaking–I just don’t think I can endorse that, and I think I’ll cut off the cable for four years if he gets in.

If Obama is handed the nomination, the only way I will not vote for McCain is if he chooses a right-wing nutcase as his running mate. If he does that, I will not vote for either one. Unfortunately, Arkansas does not allow a write-in; if it did, Hillary would get my vote.

How the DNC can think Obama can win in the GE is beyond me given the states he has “won”. Does Obama really believe that all those Republicans who voted in the open primaries are going to vote for him in the GE? For me, disenfranchisement of two states is a non-starter. Both jurisdictions have floated multiple plans that would have allowed revoting. When Barack Obama made his acceptance speech tonight, in front of his wide-eyed YES WE CAN! contingent……he talked about bringing change to Washington…he said he is the only one who can do this……his words were strong and confident……unfortunately, he does not have the resume to back his words up…..

For the last 20 years Obama has had a chance to shake the Chicago Political Machine, which has controlled Chicago’s neighborhoods for 77 years……he had a chance to stand up to the crooked Alderman….he had a chance to stand up against Todd Stroeger and the corrupt Cook County government…..but….he didn’t….in fact, he’s appeased, and appeases, the existing machine….he continues to allow alderman to accept bribes….he’s allowed our cities health care system to collapse……he’s allowed our vital public transportation system to deteriorate to a point of no return…….he’s watched a mayor destroy a city airport in the middle of the night, without permission…..he’s watched, and continues to watch Chicago’s county President abuse his power, and misuse our tax dollars…….which is hard to do, considering Chicagoans pay the highest sales tax in the country.

So, as we are still waiting for the results to come in from Lake County Indiana…because a city government is playing dirty politics…..keep in mind, this is nothing new…..as Chicagoans, this is politics as usual…politics that Barack Obama is quite familiar with, and all too willing to appease.

How can someone like Sen. Obama – who will duck a vote so he’s not forced to possibly endure *gasp* verbal or written “slings and arrows” – be realistically considered as Commander in Chief? In another words as POTUS he may have to ask those who have sworn to protect and defend the constitution – our armed forces – to possibly risk life and limb by being placed in in harm’s way.

Florida is full of middle of the road dems and republicans. We could very well end up being the swing vote in the GE. Question is, which way will we swing? Every dem. that voted for Hillary that I have spoken with is hell bent on one of three things if Hillary doesn’t get the nod. 1. Nader 2. Not voting 3. McCain. I have not heard of any that say they will hold the party line regardless.

This race is way too close to call.

if it were just obama being his disgusting self, i would not support him or vote for him, but would still support the party. however, the party’s complicity is so far over the line that i no longer wish to be associated with them.

I’m 40 with 4 kids, a mortgage, lots of bills, etc. My wife is 41.

We both voted for Obama because we feel he’s the best choice. Clinton and he agree on 99.99% of issues and CLinton herself will be working to elect him.

Then things that turned me off of CLinton were: the IWR, her voting against banning Cluster Bombs, the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, her comments towards Iran, her waffling on ‘exceptions for torture’, and her HORRIBLY RUN CAMPAIGN! I also want a clean break from the past (and the apparent duopoly of the past 28 years).

BTW, part of the reason the older generation supports her is because of the residual effects of racism. Segregation persisted until the 1960′s and MANY older folks (including my grandparents and godparents, God Bless THem) are uncomfortable voting for an African American for President.

Times are changing, though. The younger generation is far less xenophobic, and much more likely to embrace diversity.

Tonight I want to share my feelings about the Democratic Party. Let me give you a very brief biography about myself to put my experience in context. I’m a newly naturalized American citizen from Canada. Since I voted in my first election in Canada in 1984, I have voted NDP. The NDP (New Democratic Party) is the social democratic party that first brought socialized medicine to Canada in the province of Saskatchewan under the leadership of Premier Tommy Douglas. I’m from the prairies myself, Manitoba to be exact, and we often had an NDP provincial government. I can remember when the national NDP held enough seats in Parliament to be a formidable minority. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m used to having a viable third party candidate to vote for.

Being an ex-Canadian, I am intimately familiar with American culture and politics because the Canadian media is inundated with them, to the extent that there are laws mandating at least a small sliver of Canadian content on television and radio lest we lose our cultural identity altogether. I have lived in the United States through two Presidential elections, which I followed somewhat closely although I couldn’t vote. I was disgusted by the media’s fascination with the “Dean scream” and even more disgusted by the “Swift boating” of John Kerry. I often yelled at the television when George Bush came on and told his whoppers with his lopsided grin and folksy drawl and was amazed at how little he was called to account by the talking heads.

Even after witnessing all that, I am flummoxed by the way Hillary Clinton has been treated during this primary season, both by the media and by her own party. I find I was wrong about many things, not least the Democratic party itself. I was honestly shocked by the amount of sexism that has been demonstrated by the mainstream media. There are numerous egregious examples from all the news networks, and it continues to this day, but from the Democratic party we have heard not a peep in protest.

From the Obama campaign we also hear nothing. Not one word from the candidate. Zero from any surrogates, and from campaign chairs, nada. In fact, Senator Obama has made several comments himself that feminists like myself take exception to, although they pale in comparison to raging misogynists like Matthews and Olbermann. I guess to them he’s just one of the good ol’ Hillary hating boys. This is not about the media bias, mind you, which is in itself a bit puzzling to me, as I suppose I expect a tad more integrity in my journalism and at least a nod to fair play.

Speaking of fair play, I am writing this as the results are coming in from Lake County. After seeing at least one example of verified electioneering by Obama’s campaign today, and after reading numerous accounts of illegalities at caucuses in Texas and Iowa by the Obama campaign, and after attending the laughable Washington state caucuses, who knows what’s going on there. It doesn’t matter anyway, because no one cares. Not the media, not the DNC, and not Democrats excepting those supporting Hillary. A win is a win.

A win is a win, in 48 states. In Florida and Michigan a win is not a win. On television, in the newspapers, in the blogosphere, Florida and Michigan votes are not counted. The idea that those states “broke the rules” and are only getting their due is promoted endlessly by the media and by the DNC itself. We know that is not true. We know that Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire also “broke the rules” and we know that they were arbitrarily given a pass just as Florida and Michigan were arbitrarily punished, just as North Carolina was arbitrarily given more delegates, a fact revealed on CNN today by fatuous Credentials Committee member Donna Brazile.

I have been a Democrat a very short time. I proudly signed my voter registration card at my naturalization ceremony on December 19th, 2007 and registered as a Democrat. I can call myself a Democrat no longer. I can’t be part of a party that disenfranches voters. I can’t be part of a party that condones misogyny. I can’t be part of a party that sanctions election fraud. I can’t be part of a party that demands a viable, compelling, thoroughly electable candidate step aside in favor of another while she is still competitive, something that is, by the way, unprecedented in recent history. I can’t be part of a party that doesn’t share my values.

I still support Hillary, but from now on it will be as an Independent.

Marc Ambinder writes that the polling results show the Democratic party with deep fissures. Right now, I’m so disgusted with the party that I don’t give a damn if it goes down in flames.

Which is why I’ve took a holiday from politics. When partisanship is so deep it’s up to the eyebrows (and common sense goes out the door due to extremism), it’s time to find another activity. These breaks help to not get bogged down on the “daily fill” of BS; and to keep the eye on the prize — not on wild goose runs.

What is turning me off of this race, unlike the 2000 and 2004 elections, is the nitpicking that is straying off the message. Loosing focus on 1001 things makes good “bylines” for blogs and the MSM, but it has little bearing on what IS the candidate’s position. I don’t need a the daily “fill” to tell me about Hillary, nor about Obama (who I have to turn the channel when he’s on or I’m afraid mom will destroy the TV — she REALLY goes ballastic seeing him!), but I do want to know about pending policies of the candidates and their associations. Ayers should’ve been a main focus, laser beam like, but nooooooooo every other detail was harped drowning out this potential “Manchurian Candidate” associations (but this time groomed by 60s terrorists and their fellow travellers).

And because of these 1001 dead ends, Dems now will have to face up with losing yet another presidential election. McGovern showed by how much, too.

I started reading the comments on this commentary because it started with several women my age, 65, who said they will leave the Democratic party & register as independent. Put me in that group.

As for the Democratic Party or any political party, can you not see that this is what’s wrong with this country. We have operated with this two party system for years and finally they have pretty much merged into one corrupt, self serving party. The hell with We the People”.

To the elected ones party is everything. Year after year I have watched our Congress, especially, bring up bills for a vote and more often than not it’s strictly along party lines. The hell with We the people and what’s best for the country.

I read a number of comments in this column that address “for the good of the party”. I think it’s time we said the hell with the party (all of them) and go independent. Let those select few flounder on their own and see how far they get without We the People.

Sorry Kevin but only the CBS/NY Times poll shows Obama easily beating McCain (and consider the source). All the other McCain/Obama polls split evenly and are within the margin of error. Meaning that the election will come down to swing states where Obama is rather weak. If it’s any consolation, he could possibly win the popular vote (unlikely) but has no chance of carrying the electoral college. Clinton fairs slightly better in the polls and is much stronger with the demographics necessary for an electoral college win. Clinton must win or McCain will be president.

CW suggests that Obama will lose the entire election if he can’t eke out better numbers there. Generally these three states determine the end result.

Yes I am being honest. I worked for and voted for Jesse Jackson. Hillary Clinton is the best to beat McCain and lead our Country in these trying and yes, dangerous times. Obama has no experience and is part of the dirty Chicago style politics run by Hizzoner, Mayor Daley. This Chicago machine is a stain on the Democratic Party. I wouldn’t vote for Nancy Pelosi – she is a white woman. I wouldn’t vote for Elizabeth Dole – she’s a white woman. But, I would vote for Elizabeth Edwards!

I won’t address every issue individually, but every statement in your first paragraph is false. The most egregious is your assertion that Obama has run a clean campaign. Obama has, in fact, run a campaign based not on ideas (because he has none that are not borrowed from someone else); his campaign has been based on hate and division — racial division, hatred of women and hatred of the elderly. He has alienated every group necessary for him to win the GE should he end up with this nomination. His ego makes the Clintons look like a couple of Mother Teresas. I don’t care how charming he believes himself to be, just the votes of AAs and the Ivory Tower guys will not be enough for him to prevail; and that’s all he would get.

And the scare tactics of using Supreme Court appointments just won’t overcome the knowledge that Obama would simply be another George W. Bush should he be elected. Factoring in Obama’s hatred of women, he would be unlikely to ever appoint anyone who would preserve what is left of a woman’s right to choose. McCain is thus a draw on that issue and actually preferable on others.

Howard Dean should be ashamed to show his face in public for what he and his protege are doing to this party.

Kevin, many of us have already vowed never to vote for Obama should he get the nomination, but many others have not yet made that determination. So anyone with any sense who supported Obama might think this was a good time to act with a little dignity and sportsmanship. Most black people would never admit they voted for Obama because he is black. Give me a break. That would make them racists and we all know only white people are racist.

When, consistently, every state to date, he wins the AA vote by 80-90+%, makes it quite obvious to anyone with a brain that they are voting for him because he’s black. Rev. Wright meant nothing to them. Know why? Because they agree with Obama and Rev. Wright. This entire election, since SC, has been about race. Pure and simple.

Washington, DC – The latest Ipsos poll conducted over the weekend shows that on the eve of the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has taken over the lead in popular support from Democrats nationally. Among Democratic supporters across the country, 47% say that if the 2008 Democratic presidential primary or caucus was being held in their state today, they would choose Clinton, while 40% would vote for Barack Obama.

These results are in contrast to a poll conducted by Ipsos from April 23rd to April 27th and released last week which showed that Obama had a forty-six percent to forty-three percent lead over Clinton on this same question. Democratic support for Clinton remains highest from women (51%), who have a high-school education or less (58%), and very low income respondents (57% among those with an annual household income of $25,000 or less).

Americans were also asked for whom they would vote in a Presidential contest between Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate John McCain, and between Barack Obama and McCain. The good news for Democrats is that in either case the Democratic contender would have a slight edge on McCain. In a Presidential contest between Clinton and McCain, Clinton would garner 47% of the popular vote, with McCain picking up 42% of the vote. Should Barack Obama go up against McCain in November, 46% of Americans say they would vote for Obama compared to 42% who would vote for McCain.

What you are failing to acknowledge is that black voters are not letting down Hillary Clinton. They are letting themselves down. If they really want to experience poverty and hardship, they should consider what would happen if Obama got the chance to put one of his Rezko-like buddies in charge of Health & Human Services. Fortunately that nightmare will never happen; although if Hillary doesn’t get the nom, President McCain will probably appoint someone almost as bad as Obama would.
