Losing Las Vegas

webvegas-4_edited-1

As I put together this illustration, Obama was on his way to do a fundraiser for Senator Harry Reid in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So why isn’t the state’s governor willing to meet with the President of the United States? And why is the Las Vegas Mayor demanding that Obama offer an apology?

Well the brohaha started out last February, as Obama rallied against excesses, in little Elkhart, Indiana.

Here’s what President Obama said that caused Las Vegas to flip its chips:

…Look, we understand that the banking system is fragile right now and even though those folks made bad decisions — could bring down the entire economy, and it affects towns like Elkhart, so we’re going to do something strengthen the banking system. But, you know, you are not going to be able to give out these big bonuses until you’ve paid taxpayers back. You can’t get corporate jets — you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers’ dime. (Applause.)

Tourism, of course, is how Las Vegas survives. Without people to fill up the rooms and the gambling tables, the whole area would soon be in ruins. The Republican Governor Jim Gibbons claims that Obama has single-handedly cost the Las Vegas community $100 million dollars and has caused a wave of convention cancellations.

In all fairness, Las Vegas has seen its luck drain away for at least a couple of years now.

Here are some stats:
Commercial building permits — down 57 percent.
Commercial building permit values — down 72 percent.
Passengers at McCarran International Airport — down 14 percent.
Gross gaming revenue — down 18 percent.
Visitor volume — down 10.9 percent.
Convention attendance — down 4.9 percent.
Gallons of gasoline used — down 5.3 percent. (That is an indicator of out-of-state visitors and transportation of goods.)

So it seems unfair to blame the recent free fall of the Las Vegas economy on our President

However, I have one question. If the President is so concerned about excess, how come today he got on to Air Force One and flew to Las Vegas on that tax payers’ dime?

  • ConfusedAmerican

Maybe Obama has been listening to Biden talking too much. LOL

  • lightacandle

Because he’s The Holy One Who Must Not Be Questioned.

  • mel

Well you see Pat, when Obama flushes the WH toilet, he only craps around Washington, but when he flushes the toilet in AF One, he craps on everyone!

  • Ferd Berfle

LMAO. Very nicely done. I’m glad I’m not in the flight path.

  • Seattle Moss

    I think I wrote a post once…

Sensationalized news and the death of capitalism.

Obama is facilitating the rapid decline of our economic system. The marxist media is complicit in this destruction.

Even my wife says capitalism is dead….

    Thanks NBC!

  • Ferd Berfle

Pat, Pat, Pat. You know that TOTUS has been working a lot of overtime lately and needs a break. POTUS is just along for the ride.

  • MrMike

The only thing I take form this is Obama hasn’t thrown Reid under the bus … yet.

  • JustMe~~

He’s off to gamble with just a little more of our money maybe?

  • IndieDogg

So, what do we think….. will he bet on BLACK or RED?

A case could be made that he’s already bet (his political future) on both.

Just thought I’d try to start something and liven up the afternoon.

P.S. the punch line is: “It doesn’t matter; it’s not his money.”

  • oowawa

Pat, your ‘toon is really striking because the giant Mighty O looks so natural standing in front of the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign, much like the giant Paul Bunyan looked natural standing beside the “Welcome to Brainerd” sign in the movie Fargo. There isn’t another city in the country that fits the colossal O as well as Las Vegas, and that includes Chicago, which, besides the political corruption, also has “Da Bears” and Mike Ditka, broad shoulders, and stockyards. But Las Vegas is the capital of glitz, glamour, hucksterism, fleecing the public, and razzle-dazzle. Our leader has found his true spiritual home in your ‘toon. Good job!

  • Animal Control

    What Ferd said!

  • JustMe~~

and they take pictures at the same time!

  • Animal Control

    Pat,
What a great visual political commentary. The Washington Post followed your lead with a sentence in “The Fed Page”.

President Obama flies to Las Vegas this afternoon to headline (my emphasis) a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid…at Ceasars Palace

So the Post is confirming that he is all show and no substance, since when is a politician/president a headliner–change–what a joke. Any bets that Michelle wants to be compt.

  • Clara

I think he craps on all of us no matter where he is.

  • postmaster

I read earlier that Obama wanted the Governor to meet him at the airport for a quick handshake. I would have declined that ‘oh by the way’ offer too. Jerk

  • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

Harry’s in a ton of trouble with the good voters of Nevada. He has around a 30% approval rating.

I’m not sure Obama going to do any good.

If Pelosi and Reid go in 2010 ( then we’d all know there really is a God) the ballgame changes rapidly.

All I can say is too bad Harry. You should have put your money on 27.

  • Linda Mac

There is just somthing so fitting about BO being in Las Vegas. I have claimed for months that every day I can go without seeing or hearing BO or MO a single time is a good day. It is getting more and more difficult to avoid them. Thank you for the splendid cartoon. Linda

  • postmaster

Obama should stay in Washington DC and pay attention to the mess we’re in instead of flitting around campaigning for every Tom, Dick and Harry.

  • kbdabear

Obama : OK Joe, now there are house rules, and the first rule is they don’t like to lose. Now face cards are good. Now, if you see a face card you bet ONE chip, OK?

    Biden: Face cards are good

Obama: Now, you bet TWO chips if there aren’t face cards.. you follow me?

    Biden: I’m an excellent driver

It’s not just Vegas who’s been hurt by his callous comments. Event production jobs are down especially here in Chicago. I’ve been bootstrapping my internet start up company through being a freelance lighting tech at an event production company. Our business started to fall off badly back in November and it has never recovered.

November is one of the busiest times of the year for us yet businesses started to pull back on fund raisers, product launch events, sales meetings, etc. which is our bread and butter. The company I work for has been decimated since January. They’ve let go of just about all of the production and warehouse crew and are barely hanging on by a thread and this is the 2nd quarter busy season!

Big time concert-like multimedia corporate events have been on a huge growth spurt for the past several years – until now. Now only the big, multi-office companies are weathering the storm ok. Everyone else is holding on for dear life to dinky life preservers in the middle of a raging sea with no land in sight.

  • lorac

But I don’t think a cartoon of BO is ever complete without the two teleprompters.

  • lorac

    LOL

  • Don X

Love the cartoon, Pat. Obama plans to remain in Nevada Wednesday for a visit to Nellis Air Force Base for a tour of the facility’s solar electric plant, the largest in North America. Does that help him justify the use of Air Force One? I don’t see how he justifies using it just for fundraisers. The Repubs will be all over him for that!

  • Rich

Very nice catoon, and I really like the way you draw Obama. Just because you tell the truth does not mean that everyone will like it.

    Rich

  • Dani

Pat – thanks for the article and the fantastic
cartoon. That about sums it up in a nutshell!

  • arky

But honey, that’s all he knows how to do…campaigning. All talk, no substance.

  • Diana

I would have thought Nevada would have been complaining before now with all the Casinos going up all over AZ and CA. They had to have been loosing some money…With the high cost of fuel, I’m sure many decided to gamble within their own home states.

We have some really nice ones going up here in CA. I like the buffets. I’m not really a gambler, my husband enjoys it, but I take $20 with me and when it’s gone; I’m done. My son in law also likes entering the poker tournaments. They gamble. My daughter and I along with the children eat and shop.

  • Baba Rum Raisin

Compared to Las Vegas’ native dirtball political class, Obama and his Chicago Thugs look like Cub Scout Pack 32.

And I say that as an 18 year Southern Nevada resident, and with all the love in the World!

  • Baba Rum Raisin

If Obama and Gibbons (The Empty Fluit Suit, or Governor Zero) had a contest to see which one was the bigger asshole, it would take the ENTIRE American College of Proctologists to determine the Winner.

  • jiminycricket

Because he flies EVERYWHERE on the taxpayer’s dime! Even if it’s just to go home to Chicago with MEcHELLe for a bit of Valentine’s lovemaking. He just grooves on the perks of the job and thinks he deserves it all!

  • jiminycricket

Forgot to say…great toon, Tricia! Only one comment…you have to raise his head so that his chin is up…you know, to achieve that “I’m the most important person on the planet” look that he always has.

  • Baba Rum Raisin

    >>> I would have thought Nevada would have been complaining before now with all the Casinos going up all over AZ and CA.

Who do you think manages those casinos for their (paper) owners, trains their help, builds and services the gaming equipment, designs the buildings and interiors, etc?

    Companies from Vermont?

Ever hear of a Hotel graduate from, say, University of California at Barona? Or Pala State University?

Skim City OWNS the Gaming business in the entire USA aaaaaaaand Texas, as Gabby Hays used to say.

I checked how much money Nevada is getting from CA’s casinos. The owners of casinos in CA and Nevada. I couldn’t find any company in Nevada getting a share of CA or AZ’s casino money. I did find this.

Experts Debate How Much Money Nevada Could Lose to Tribal Gambling
    December 14, 2000

By John Stearns – Reno Gazette-Journal

It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when — and how much.

This area’s projected lost revenue to tribal gaming hinges on a number of factors. Among them:

How quickly will the California Indian casinos build? How swiftly will existing tribal casinos expand and improve?
What will be the quality level of the unbuilt or expanding facilities?
How many slot machines ultimately will wind up located next door in California, encouraging Nevada’s neighbors to the West to stay home and gamble?

Economic impact estimates range from virtually zero to outright painful.

Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. of New York has offered a worst-case scenario.

Citing Reno’s lack of must-see attractions, its location and quality of its casinos, Bear, Stearns estimated that Reno-Sparks is the Nevada market with the most to lose from Indian gaming: as much as 21.6 percent, or $231.6 million of gaming revenues by 2004-05. Bear, Stearns estimated that $355 million in other revenues, including lodging, shopping and recreation, also could be lost.

That’s how much the rate of growth is likely to settle out over the next few years, not an immediate cut off the top, said Bear, Stearns gaming analyst Jason Ader.

“For Reno casino operators, it’s a risk,” Ader said.

For slot machine manufacturers or casino operators doing business in California, it’s an opportunity, he said. “But nevertheless, it’s coming. To ignore California would be . . . imprudent.”

For Lake Tahoe, Bear, Stearns estimated that gaming revenues lost to Indian casinos would amount to 15.4 percent, or $50.1 million, and there would be a loss of $241.9 million of other revenues.

Nice Cartoon Pat, wonderful representation of LV and the Pres.

Convention business is down all over the country and the world. Yes, Pres. Obama should not have said that, but as I remember, there was a JP Morgan convention scheduled for Las Vegas and was pulled prior to this statement. Surely, the Mayor of Las Vegas would be the first to realize that when people have lost money in the stock market, or their retirement accounts, or that their homes are “underwater” that there will be less people willing to throw away their money in LV casinos.

And to Baba Rum: Did your wife also think you
were a man? Your statement should not be printed here.

  • FLDemFem

Well, why do you think the DNC moved heaven, earth and all the rules to make sure he got in? They wanted him for his fundraising ability. And that email list. He refused to share his email list during the campaign, and refused to fund down-ticket candidates. He wouldn’t do a speech in support of a candidate unless they contributed to his campaign fund. Now that he is President, and de facto head of the Democratic Party, he has to do some fundraising for the Dems. And you can’t really blame them for getting what they can out of him. After all, they subverted the political process for him, the least he can do is raise some money for them. Right?

And I think it’s great that the governor refused to participate in a photo op for Obummer. No picture with the caption, “Nevada’s governor welcomes the President to Las Vegas.” It should bring home to Obummer that words do matter, especially when they affect peoples’ livelihoods. Perhaps he will be more careful in future.

But both unbridled capitalism as facilitated by Bush/Obama corporatist policies have brought this country to its knees. That is, greed and corruption are the toxic economic cocktail that have brought us to this point.

Hey Pat, Is there any truth to what I am hearing about Rezko and his family being threatened by AA thugs in the prison? Apparently they are upset that he may spill some beans about Obama that would be ‘unsettling’ for BO and his ‘transparent’ administration??

  • b mathews

As a las vegas resident, i was invited to attend(actually to pay for the privelege)of attending that fundraiser at ceasers palace. i told the caller they would have to pay ME to attend. harry reid is my senator and i have written him numerous times to ask about his support for a COLA freeze on social security payments until 2013. since las vegas has a large senior population who contribute enormously to the economy here, a COLA freeze would undoubtedly be detrimental to our economy. so far i have not recieved a reply and neither i, nor most senior citizens here will be voting for harry reid.

  • Pat Racimora

I haven’t heard about that one. My guess is that Rezko may be another Gordon Liddy and will keep quiet about anything he might know.

  • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

It’s my understanding that Rezko hasn’t been sentenced, yet. Did I miss the boat? AA’s may be doing that where Rezko is being held.

Fitzgerald asked for a delay of sentencing in order to keep Rezko singing.

My personal hunch is that Rezko and Blagojevich have more than enough facts and information to bring on the downfall of Obama. Frankly I hope they do the right thing and sing, sing, sing.

My guess is there’s a three legged stool in Thugland. One leg is Blago. The next leg is Rezko and who would fit the bill for the third leg, given what we know?

Why Miss Michelle could even be one of the nails holding that stool together…

It is being reported that Bill Clinton is still a little upset with some people who betrayed him in 2008 by endorsing Obama over Hillary:

Bill Clinton Is Still A Little Upset About 2008

    Holly Bailey

The New York Times is out this afternoon with a preview of a profile of Bill Clinton running in its Sunday magazine this weekend. Written by Peter Baker, who covered Clinton’s final years in the White House for the Washington Post and who now covers President Obama for the Times, the piece is all about what the former president has been up to lately now that his wife is Secretary of State. There’s plenty of interesting scenes in the piece, starting with the opener: Clinton, looking at handbags and jewelry in Peru, confesses that he likes picking out gifts for his friends’ wives and girlfriends. The former president, who has now been out of the White House longer than he was in it, is an expert at craft stores around the world “and can tell you the best ones in Hong Kong or Arusha,” Baker writes. Thus goes the life of a former president.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/31/magazine/31clinton-t.html

But it’s the underlying tension between Obama and Clinton that still lingers from the campaign that’s most telling in the piece. While it appears Obama and Hillary Clinton have made nice, Bill Clinton is still upset about the campaign. He’s still mad that he was trashed for making racially insensitive comments about Obama.”None of them ever took seriously the race crap,” he says. “They knew it was politics.” And according to those close to him, Clinton hasn’t forgiven Ted Kennedy or his niece, Caroline, for endorsing Obama. Ditto for Bill Richardson. Clinton tells Baker that he’s only talked to Obama once or twice since Inauguration Day, though he talks to VP Joe Biden weekly and sends memos to Jim Jones, Obama’s national security adviser. “I try to stay out of their way,” Clinton says. “I’ve got plenty to do. I’ve got a full life here. If I come up with an idea I think that’s helpful to them, I give it to them.” If his wife asks for advice, he gives it to her—though he notes that it’s harder for him to get in touch with her these days. (Her cell phone doesn’t work at the State Department.) “She used to look forward to me coming home from wherever I’ve been,” he says. “Now I’m afraid I’ll be second fiddle to whatever world leader she’s just met.”

While Clinton may still have issues with those in Obamaland, it’s been well documented that he’s made peace with other former foes includes conservatives like Richard Mellon Scaife who trashed him while in office. As we know, Clinton and George W. Bush made peace, too—and the 42nd president offers Baker some details on how that went down. “You know, I’m a Baptist,” Clinton tells Baker. “We don’t give up on anybody. We believe in deathbed conversations.”

Tag(s): Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, bill clinton

Here is the main quote in the New York Times article that is being referred to in the Newsweek article:

    It’s Not About Bill

    BY PETER BAKER

    Published: May 26, 2009

“People close to Clinton said he has largely got over his resentment at Obama but not toward Ted Kennedy and his niece, Caroline Kennedy. As Clinton sees it, they say, he did so much for the Kennedys over the years that he felt they became almost family. Nor has he forgiven Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who endorsed Obama even though Clinton appointed him to two cabinet posts. And the man once called the “first black president” remains deeply wounded by allegations that he made racially insensitive remarks during the campaign, like dismissing Obama’s South Carolina win by comparing it with Jesse Jackson’s victories there in the 1980s.

“None of them ever really took seriously the race rap,” he told me. “They knew it was politics. I had one minister in Texas in the general election come up and put his arm around me.” This was an Obama supporter. “And he came up, threw his arm around me and said, ‘You’ve got to forgive us for that race deal.’ He said, ‘That was out of line.’ But he said, ‘You know, we wanted to win real bad.’ And I said, ‘I got no problem with that.’ I said it’s fine; it’s O.K. And we laughed about it and we went on.” The other side is moving on, too. Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, who once recalled an angry Clinton berating him on the phone for criticizing the former president’s campaign rhetoric, is letting bygones be bygones, at least publicly. “No fence-mending is needed,” Clyburn said through a spokeswoman.

Yet if Clinton has a powerful memory for slights, he also has a remarkable capacity for reconciliation. He is likelier to find peace with people who hate him the most than with friends who betray him…”

James Carville still likened Bill Richardson to “Judas” even after the 2008 election was over:

Obama’s “Deliberate Haste”; Democrats Vow to Pass Bailout for Auto Industry; Interview with Sarah Palin

    Aired November 12, 2008 – 17:00 ET

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: “Let’s get some more now on what Zain just reported. Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico as a possible secretary of state. We’re joined by our CNN contributor, the Democratic strategist James Carville. He’s joining us from beautiful New Orleans. And from New York also, a beautiful place, Republican strategist Rich Galen.

James, you and Bill Richardson, you know, you weren’t necessarily pals during the campaign when he endorsed Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. You likened him that the point as all our viewers remember to Judas. What do you think about him becoming secretary of state right now?

JAMES CARVILLE, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Me personally, I’ve not changed my opinion of him. I don’t know — I understand the Hispanic leaders have endorsed him. They’re perfectly right to do that, but my sense is he doesn’t have his support is not very deep for that position. We’ll see what the president-elect does.

BLITZER: Are you still angry at him?

CARVILLE: I haven’t changed my opinion of him. You know, but the election is over. I think the same thing I did as when he did it. But the president-elect has to make his choice. I don’t sense that there’s a lot of support for him. You know, I can understand the Hispanics have endorsed him. I think when he looks it over, so far, he’s made very competent appointments. I suspect that tradition will continue…”
