Bill Clinton Is Still A Little Upset About 2008

Holly Bailey

The New York Times is out this afternoon with a preview of a profile of Bill Clinton running in its Sunday magazine this weekend. Written by Peter Baker, who covered Clinton’s final years in the White House for the Washington Post and who now covers President Obama for the Times, the piece is all about what the former president has been up to lately now that his wife is Secretary of State. There’s plenty of interesting scenes in the piece, starting with the opener: Clinton, looking at handbags and jewelry in Peru, confesses that he likes picking out gifts for his friends’ wives and girlfriends. The former president, who has now been out of the White House longer than he was in it, is an expert at craft stores around the world “and can tell you the best ones in Hong Kong or Arusha,” Baker writes. Thus goes the life of a former president.

But it’s the underlying tension between Obama and Clinton that still lingers from the campaign that’s most telling in the piece. While it appears Obama and Hillary Clinton have made nice, Bill Clinton is still upset about the campaign. He’s still mad that he was trashed for making racially insensitive comments about Obama."None of them ever took seriously the race crap," he says. "They knew it was politics." And according to those close to him, Clinton hasn’t forgiven Ted Kennedy or his niece, Caroline, for endorsing Obama. Ditto for Bill Richardson. Clinton tells Baker that he’s only talked to Obama once or twice since Inauguration Day, though he talks to VP Joe Biden weekly and sends memos to Jim Jones, Obama’s national security adviser. “I try to stay out of their way,” Clinton says. “I’ve got plenty to do. I’ve got a full life here. If I come up with an idea I think that’s helpful to them, I give it to them.” If his wife asks for advice, he gives it to her—though he notes that it’s harder for him to get in touch with her these days. (Her cell phone doesn’t work at the State Department.) “She used to look forward to me coming home from wherever I’ve been,” he says. “Now I’m afraid I’ll be second fiddle to whatever world leader she’s just met.”

While Clinton may still have issues with those in Obamaland, it’s been well documented that he’s made peace with other former foes includes conservatives like Richard Mellon Scaife who trashed him while in office. As we know, Clinton and George W. Bush made peace, too—and the 42nd president offers Baker some details on how that went down. “You know, I’m a Baptist,” Clinton tells Baker. “We don’t give up on anybody. We believe in deathbed conversations.”

It’s Not About Bill

"People close to Clinton said he has largely got over his resentment at Obama but not toward Ted Kennedy and his niece, Caroline Kennedy. As Clinton sees it, they say, he did so much for the Kennedys over the years that he felt they became almost family. Nor has he forgiven Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who endorsed Obama even though Clinton appointed him to two cabinet posts. And the man once called the “first black president” remains deeply wounded by allegations that he made racially insensitive remarks during the campaign, like dismissing Obama’s South Carolina win by comparing it with Jesse Jackson’s victories there in the 1980s.

“None of them ever really took seriously the race rap,” he told me. “They knew it was politics. I had one minister in Texas in the general election come up and put his arm around me.” This was an Obama supporter. “And he came up, threw his arm around me and said, ‘You’ve got to forgive us for that race deal.’ He said, ‘That was out of line.’ But he said, ‘You know, we wanted to win real bad.’ And I said, ‘I got no problem with that.’ I said it’s fine; it’s O.K. And we laughed about it and we went on.” The other side is moving on, too. Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, who once recalled an angry Clinton berating him on the phone for criticizing the former president’s campaign rhetoric, is letting bygones be bygones, at least publicly. “No fence-mending is needed,” Clyburn said through a spokeswoman.

Yet if Clinton has a powerful memory for slights, he also has a remarkable capacity for reconciliation. He is likelier to find peace with people who hate him the most than with friends who betray him..."

James Carville still likened Bill Richardson to "Judas" even after the 2008 election was over:

Obama's "Deliberate Haste"; Democrats Vow to Pass Bailout for Auto Industry; Interview with Sarah Palin

Aired November 12, 2008 - 17:00 ET

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: "Let's get some more now on what Zain just reported. Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico as a possible secretary of state. We're joined by our CNN contributor, the Democratic strategist James Carville. He's joining us from beautiful New Orleans. And from New York also, a beautiful place, Republican strategist Rich Galen.

James, you and Bill Richardson, you know, you weren't necessarily pals during the campaign when he endorsed Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. You likened him that the point as all our viewers remember to Judas. What do you think about him becoming secretary of state right now?

JAMES CARVILLE, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Me personally, I've not changed my opinion of him. I don't know -- I understand the Hispanic leaders have endorsed him. They're perfectly right to do that, but my sense is he doesn't have his support is not very deep for that position. We'll see what the president-elect does.

BLITZER: Are you still angry at him?

CARVILLE: I haven't changed my opinion of him. You know, but the election is over. I think the same thing I did as when he did it. But the president-elect has to make his choice. I don't sense that there's a lot of support for him. You know, I can understand the Hispanics have endorsed him. I think when he looks it over, so far, he's made very competent appointments. I suspect that tradition will continue..."

It's my understanding that Rezko hasn't been sentenced, yet. Did I miss the boat? AA's may be doing that where Rezko is being held.

Fitzgerald asked for a delay of sentencing in order to keep Rezko singing.

My personal hunch is that Rezko and Blagojevich have more than enough facts and information to bring on the downfall of Obama. Frankly I hope they do the right thing and sing, sing, sing.

My guess is there's a three legged stool in Thugland. One leg is Blago. The next leg is Rezko and who would fit the bill for the third leg, given what we know?

Why Miss Michelle could even be one of the nails holding that stool together...

As a las vegas resident, i was invited to attend(actually to pay for the privelege)of attending that fundraiser at ceasers palace. i told the caller they would have to pay ME to attend. harry reid is my senator and i have written him numerous times to ask about his support for a COLA freeze on social security payments until 2013. since las vegas has a large senior population who contribute enormously to the economy here, a COLA freeze would undoubtedly be detrimental to our economy. so far i have not recieved a reply and neither i, nor most senior citizens here will be voting for harry reid.

But both unbridled capitalism as facilitated by Bush/Obama corporatist policies have brought this country to its knees. That is, greed and corruption are the toxic economic cocktail that have brought us to this point.

Well, why do you think the DNC moved heaven, earth and all the rules to make sure he got in? They wanted him for his fundraising ability. And that email list. He refused to share his email list during the campaign, and refused to fund down-ticket candidates. He wouldn't do a speech in support of a candidate unless they contributed to his campaign fund. Now that he is President, and de facto head of the Democratic Party, he has to do some fundraising for the Dems. And you can't really blame them for getting what they can out of him. After all, they subverted the political process for him, the least he can do is raise some money for them. Right?

And I think it's great that the governor refused to participate in a photo op for Obummer. No picture with the caption, "Nevada's governor welcomes the President to Las Vegas." It should bring home to Obummer that words do matter, especially when they affect peoples' livelihoods. He refused to share his email list during the campaign, and refused to fund down-ticket candidates. He wouldn’t do a speech in support of a candidate unless they contributed to his campaign fund. Now that he is President, and de facto head of the Democratic Party, he has to do some fundraising for the Dems. And you can’t really blame them for getting what they can out of him. After all, they subverted the political process for him, the least he can do is raise some money for them. Right?

And I think it’s great that the governor refused to participate in a photo op for Obummer. No picture with the caption, “Nevada’s governor welcomes the President to Las Vegas.” It should bring home to Obummer that words do matter, especially when they affect peoples’ livelihoods. Perhaps he will be more careful in future.

Nice Cartoon Pat, wonderful representation of LV and the Pres.

Convention business is down all over the country and the world. Yes, Pres. Obama should not have said that, but as I remember, there was a JP Morgan convention scheduled for Las Vegas and was pulled prior to this statement. Surely, the Mayor of Las Vegas would be the first to realize that when people have lost money in the stock market, or their retirement accounts, or that their homes are "underwater" that there will be less people willing to throw away their money in LV casinos.

And to Baba Rum: Did your wife also think you
were a man? Your statement should not be printed here.

I checked how much money Nevada is getting from CA's casinos. The owners of casinos in CA and Nevada. I couldn't find any company in Nevada getting a share of CA or AZ's casino money. I did find this.

Experts Debate How Much Money Nevada Could Lose to Tribal Gambling
December 14, 2000
By John Stearns - Reno Gazette-Journal

It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when -- and how much.

This area’s projected lost revenue to tribal gaming hinges on a number of factors. Among them:

How quickly will the California Indian casinos build? How swiftly will existing tribal casinos expand and improve?
What will be the quality level of the unbuilt or expanding facilities?
How many slot machines ultimately will wind up located next door in California, encouraging Nevada’s neighbors to the West to stay home and gamble?

Economic impact estimates range from virtually zero to outright painful.

Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. of New York has offered a worst-case scenario.

Citing Reno’s lack of must-see attractions, its location and quality of its casinos, Bear, Stearns estimated that Reno-Sparks is the Nevada market with the most to lose from Indian gaming: as much as 21.6 percent, or $231.6 million of gaming revenues by 2004-05. Bear, Stearns estimated that $355 million in other revenues, including lodging, shopping and recreation, also could be lost.

That’s how much the rate of growth is likely to settle out over the next few years, not an immediate cut off the top, said Bear, Stearns gaming analyst Jason Ader.

“For Reno casino operators, it’s a risk,” Ader said.

For slot machine manufacturers or casino operators doing business in California, it’s an opportunity, he said. “But nevertheless, it’s coming. To ignore California would be . . . imprudent.”

For Lake Tahoe, Bear, Stearns estimated that gaming revenues lost to Indian casinos would amount to 15.4 percent, or $50.1 million, and there would be a loss of $241.9 million of other revenues.

A hoot!

My ex-wife didn't need a book to accomplish this, although she WAS Geographically-challenged: she thought that Cooking and F***ing were cities in China.
