Why we should EVEN have Nancy Pelosi’s back…

Susan’s Note: This is my idea of 21st century feminism. We speak out against all sexism and misogyny towards women of all political types, from Sarah Palin to Hillary Clinton and, yes, even Nancy Pelosi — when she is attacked. We don’t insist on a political litmus test before we’ll defend a woman, unlike the 20th century feminists who were silent while Sarah Palin was attacked. As a reader commented about this story at The New Agenda, “We need to recast this in our minds: We’re not defending women who don’t deserve it. We’re attacking men who do.”

Score a victory for women! Within 24 hours of The New Agenda issuing a press release and action alert about the RNC’s below the belt “Pussy Galore” video attacking Nancy Pelosi, the RNC had the good sense to pull it down. As one member wrote: “See how little it takes to get people to stop doing what they know is wrong? Too bad we weren’t properly mobilized in January of 2008. ” Too bad indeed! But we’re ready now (remember to donate if you can while we build out our national infrastructure!).

Thanks to all the members who took the time to send emails or call the RNC and Michael Steele. But for all the members that were outraged by the “Pussy Galore” video and took the time to write or call – for all those that stood up for a woman that they did or did not like because the video had crossed the line, there were some who looked at it differently. For others, Nancy Pelosi was on their “list” and therefore she was not worth defending.

pelosiglamAnd let me tell you this – having the back of Nancy Pelosi was not easy for me either. I have seen Nancy Pelosi attack the first viable women presidential candidate from her own party which to me is inexcusable. I’ve seen her vitriol towards a VP candidate from the Republican Party. I’ve also seen her turn on women in Congress at her own whim. Suffice it say, she ain’t my fav! But the role of The New Agenda is to expose all forms of unfair and discriminatory treatment against women – not just our favs – all women.

And sometimes that ain’t easy: to defend a woman who has hardly been a friend to other women. In fact, since we started The New Agenda, I’ve had to do quite a bit of soul searching myself. One habit that I am proactively moving away from is my old fallback of keeping “lists” of enemies. My natural instinct was that since Pelosi turned on Hillary, I should turn on Pelosi. You know, Pelosi was on my “list”.

And I, like many women, was used to keeping lists. In my career on Wall Street, keeping lists was a survival mechanism. I recall a conversation with a colleague, Tony Cline, who was a 6′6″, 250 lb former NFL tight-end. Tony was having an “issue” with a client, so I told Tony to have the client call me – to which Tony replied: “He’s not going to call you. He’s scared of you. We’re all scared of you.” See on Wall Street keeping a list works.

But in the world of women on women, keeping lists can be an unmitigated disaster. If we hope to make this world better for women and girls, we need to start by finding a better way to treat one another. As I wrote earlier this month in my piece Not too Hot, Not too Cold, women are so darn hard on other women. Give it a rest sisters. None of us are perfect – either individually or as an organization.

Sometimes it seems that if we don’t get it 100% right, it’s time for destruction. Some might call this the “Mean Girls” Syndrome. Here’s some of emails in my inbox about our decision to speak out on the “Pussy Galore” video:

  • What’s APPALING is Botoxnan. She was horrid to Hillary and her supporters spreading untruths and sexism She is the biggest disappointment to millions of women, myself included.. She deserves what she is getting.
  • I’m sorry but I hate Nancy Pelosi! After how she treated Hillary, she is on my shit list! I don’t care what the RNC or ANYBODY says about this bitch!!!
  • IF YOUR ORGANIZATION HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH PULLING THIS VIDEO OF A SHAMEFUL WOMAN WHO CARED NOTHING OF STABBING HILLARY CLINTON IN THE BACK, THEN I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU.

So let me get this straight – because Nancy Pelosi does not support women, we should vilify her? We should allow an open season on sexism against her? What good does that do? Cuz the next time the RNC does the video, having got away with it the first time, the video will feature Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin or someone we like. Sexism left unchecked is like a weed that grows and flourishes. Well the good news is that it ain’t growing unchecked anymore. The New Agenda is whacking the weeds and now setting up a national infrastructure to get down at the roots and take those out too!

But if we are truly to succeed, we need to work together. When The New Agenda spoke out for Nancy Pelosi, we are modeling and rewarding the kind of behavior women need in order to move forward. Maybe Pelosi doesn’t get that now – maybe she never will. But we must remember this – that many women in this country have never been the beneficiary of having other women have their back, and so, they don’t know what it looks like. Well we know what it looks like, and TNA will walk the walk and talk the talk. Let’s hope Pelosi learns a lesson and next time thinks twice.

And as The New Agenda stood alone in defending and speaking out for Sarah Palin when it was unpopular to do so, so will we have the back of other women when they are victims of sexist treatment that crosses the line. A conservative women’s site called The Pink Flamingo wrote on their site:

There is a site called The New Agenda, that is “dedicated to improving the lives of women”. I did an archive search and have discovered that TNA did a very good job, and still does of supporting Sarah Palin because of the fact that she is a woman, not because of politics of political party. They are giving Sotomeyer the same treatment.

So for those of you that are disappointed with our decision to speak out about the “Pussy Galore” video, that is okay. Remember the old ad for Motel 6 about leaving the light on. The New Agenda is here, we’re moving forward and spreading our wings to fly. And we realize that some of you might not choose to be with us on every step of our journey. That’s fine too. But we’ll leave the light on and hope that you’ll come back to walk with us on this last mile to equality.

And as Cynthia Ruccia wrote in January that she was Eating Crow for Caroline Kennedy, well looks like I’ll be eating some crow for Nancy Pelosi.

  • ScottVA

I think Nancy Pelosi gets everything that is coming to her…and I’m a Democrat! She’s a petty out of control woman who lies through her teeth! I feel or see no need for anyone to defend her …she gets herself into this sh*t she can get herself out of it! Let her defend herself with more lies! LOL

    • getfitnow

Bravo, ScottVa. I’m sick of blind gender and or race/ethnicity support. My beloved grandmother raised me. When I did something she didn’t approve of, she would say, “baby, you may be mine, but when you’re wrong, you’re wrong.” We better start standing up for what we believe otherwise, we will get the alternative every single time. I’m just sayin’….

      • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

You bring up a good point.

We can condemn Nancy Pelosi’s past actions against Hillary Clinton at the same time that we condemn the RNC for a sexist attack. I’m sorry, but any video with the first word as “Pussy” in it is sexist at the level of national politics.

I may have framed my report differently than The New Agenda did — with a healthy dose of criticism for Nancy Pelosi — but I stand with them solidly in their condemnation of the sexist ad.

We are ALL learning. I am willing to consider this a “work in progress,” but I believe that we MUST welcome women from all political backgrounds.

If a Democratic senator used the “c” word against Kay Bailey Hutchinson, I’d condemn the senator, even though I have little or no regard for Hutchinson. It’s principle before personality. I would mention my disagreements with Hutchinson’s support for the Iraq War, etc., etc., but I could also condemn the senator.

        • Senneth

Great article, Amy. As a member of The New Agenda I applaud this stand and article. I, too, detest Pelosi because of her unfeminist behavior towards Hillary, Palin, and others. However, we’re either against misogyny and sexism and stand up when we see it happening, regardless of who is being attacked, or we cherry pick who we want to support. It’s pretty clear to me. Picking and choosing does not work. We need to speak out against misogyny and sexism as much and as often as we can when we see it happening, thereby educating the public as to what those words really mean and show the country that there is an organization who will step up to the plate and demand equal treatment. Thank you Amy and TNA for your great work!

        • Just Me

Granted, the ad is an abomination and should be condemned.

However, it is only one element regarding the critique of Pelosi.

Do not try to use the ad’s existence as an overall strawman to redeem Pelosi.

Two separate issues. The ad is deplorable, and Pelosi’s behavior has been deplorable (esp.re HRC, the primaries, no Bush investigations, etc.).

One does not excuse, negate, nor justify the other.

        • NoBamaNoWay

agreed, Susan; we can criticise Pelosi *and* the sexim.

      • ConstanceO

This isn’t “blind gender support.” It is nailing sexism.
And if we let this sexist ad pass us by with barely a whimper we won’t have much to stand upon when the next sexist ad has a picture of Hillary Clinton in it.
        The New Agenda is right.

    • Janis

I think Nancy Pelosi gets everything that is coming to her.

Let’s turn off the Euphemismo-Matic here and take a look at what this really says:

“I think that some men who sexually humiliate women are great!”

“I think some chicks got it coming!”

“I think rape, abuse, and degradation can be okay sometimes!”

“I support some men who would use disgusting sexual language to attack a woman instead of arguing with her opinions!”

“I need to learn who was raped before I can determine whether the rape was wrong!”

Okay? That make things clearer for you?

      • lorac

I think perhaps you’re using the rape example as hyperbole, because no one here is talking about rape. Many here are very, very angry at Pelosi, and want her to “get what’s coming to her”. But I don’t believe anyone means rape. I think they want her held accountable for her lies and possible crimes, as well as for being a perpetrator of sexism. So, it’s hard for some people to defend her against sexism, when she’s guilty of it herself.

I think the more parallel rape example would be if a guy went around raping women, then finally got thrown in prison, and then he got raped himself by some guy(s) in prison. People might then say, I don’t care if he got raped, he’s a rapist himself! Because the crux of the Pelosi example is that she is both a perpetrator and a victim, just as this prison example shows. So, it complicates people’s already strong emotions. But Pelosi isn’t a rapist, and people aren’t advocating she should be raped.

I’m really angry at Pelosi (and have been since the Impeachment Off The Table pronouncement), but I do think that sexism must be labeled and decried no matter whom is being targeted, so I agree with you about that.

Although, I have heard that research shows that the most effective way to change people’s biased behavior is if a peer calls them on it. For example, if you’re with a group of friends, and one of them (female or male) makes a sexist statement, call attention to its sexism. Apparently, people are more likely to take in information when they hear it in their peer group, than when it comes from “on high”.

        • viking

I agree generally. I’d like to expand on your comment:

“I think they want her held accountable for her lies and possible crimes, as well as for being a perpetrator of sexism.”

I also want to see her held accountable for her lies and possibly, crimes. Sexist diatribe does not hold her accountable, it is merely an embarrassing and humiliating jab, not on the basis for which she deserves humiliation and embarrassment, but on the basis of her gender.

In this case, the real issues for which she deserves condemnation are sidelined while the sexist punch sucks up the oxygen on hand to criticize her and eventually the sexist punch dissipates over time plus gets backlash. She ends up skating away.

  • ConfusedAmerican

Not sure what the video was about but right is right and wrong is wrong. When it is wrong it doesnt matter who the wrong is against, it is wrong.

Hey I am far far from a fan of Nancy’s, but do know that what goes around comes around. Just maybe all this stuff about the waterboarding is what one just might call Karma.

Im really proud of the RNC.

Yet why do I have still have this feeling that DNC just might not be so mindful. Oh yea, I remember why….All the calls and letters for all the sexist things they did to Hillary just seemed to hit deaf ears…

This is MHO from a former Democrat.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

We can’t count on either party to not be sexist – we need to count on ourselves!

      • Ani

You are correct. Amy, I applaud your efforts to stand up to sexism in each case, but, as I abhor Nancy Pelosi, I still have to note one word where she is concerned: karma.

She had no problem when Hillary was on the receiving end of this crap and pretended it was not happening.

I wonder if, after this ad materialized, she will now acknowledge that sexism exists. She roundly denied there was any in the primary last year.

Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi will never get one tenth of what’s coming to her (in a non-sexist way) in terms of retribution for her biased behavior in last year’s primary. She was a disgrace to a wonderful candidate for her own selfish purposes.

Furthermore, she does not respect other women. What kind of example does this set for anyone else? When being interviewed by George Stephanopoulos in March, 2008, he asked what of the women who will be angry about Hillary getting pushed aside for the nomination? Her answer was “the women will fall in line.” Oh, will we now?

How are we supposed to move past all this old tripe of judging women differently, when arguably the most powerful woman in the country pretends there’s nothing that requires attention.

        • Senneth

Yeah, Ani, Pelosi’s an ass and deserves karma to happen to her; as does the DNC and all the other fine, upstanding creeps who gamed the caucuses, threatened us, name-called, race-baited, were horrific homophobes, etc. etc. Unfortunately, to end sexism and misogyny we all have to stand up and be counted for prevailing behavior to change. Hard work for all of us when so many of us are still wracked with pain from this past election and all that ensued.

        • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

there’s no easy answer Ani other than one step and one mind at a time. when women finally have each other’s backs, all the issues we face will take care of themselves.

if this was easy it would have been done. it’s a process – for me personally too -

it’s not to say we support their policies – but that we abhor sexism and double standards and we smack these down every chance we get.

          • Ani

Thanks so much for responding, Amy & Senneth.

By this logic however, in the same breath that we defend Pelosi from this particular sexist attack, we must likewise give her a clear smackdown for the fact that she pretended the misogynist horror show that happened last year was a fiction.

I’d love to be able to frame this defense in such a way as to say, “we are treating her better than she treated her sisters.”

            • Portia Elizabeth

Ani — thank you for refreshing our memories about Nancy’s treachery during last year’s primaries. She sold out her “sisters” then and as far as I’m concerned, she deserves no support from them now.
I have this quirk that prevents me, when someone has put a knife in my back, from helping them buy a new one.

              • Janis

She sold out her “sisters” then and as far as I’m concerned, she deserves no support from them now.

And the men who humiliated, abused, and degraded her DO deserve your support? Because that’s what you’re doing, you know. Let’s not mince words here.

                • Portia Elizabeth

You have an interesting and distorted way of misinterpreting people’s words. Are you a mind-reader? I don’t think so and i also don’t think you have any idea what I mean. My attitude toward Nancy Pelosi has nothing to do with a stupid ad and everything to do with the dehumanizing way she treated other women during last year’s primaries.

FYI: At no time did I say I supported the ones responsible for this attack on NP. You really should try to control your tendency to jump to erroneous conclusions.

                • Portia Elizabeth

FYI: at no time did I say or even imply I supported the ones who attacked NP. You really should try to control your tendency to jump to erroneous conclusions.

            • lorac

I, too, think that this approach is immensely important.

        • FranSC

I agree, Ani. When asked, Pelosi as well as Barbara Boxer denied any sexism in the primaries. I’m quite sure Pelosi may have seen the light in the last few weeks. Her philosophy apparently is that you have to be strong enough to play hardball with the boys, and if you are not you deserve to lose.

Any stands we take against sexism toward Pelosi should NEVER be interpreted as an ounce of support for her either. That, as well, must be made clear. Otherwise, we are compromising ourselves.

      • FranSC

Amy, I would have no doubt warmed to your suggestion sooner had you not pro-longed the “got your back”, “must defend all women regardless of whether we agree with them or not”, etc. etc. I would NEVER advocate sexism toward my bitterest enemy. Yes, it is always important to speak out against any form of sexism, misogyny, and particularly sexualized pictures, political cartoons, etc.

I can assure you I would speak out forcefully against it, but I would preface any such comments with my displeasure of the likes of Nancy Pelosi. That way, it gives more power to the denouncing of the sexist act if the perpertrators and others understand we do not otherwise support such women, but will not stand by and see even them victimized by it.

I really don’t see that as “supporting” such a woman or “having her back”. I see that as an iron fist against the sexism and not at all in favor of this woman. The words would have to be MORE about the perpertrator than the victim regardless of whether you liked and agreed with the woman involved.

Frankly, I was afraid you were getting ready to advocate not EVER being critical of such women. THAT I could not do. Particularly a woman in the case of Pelosi whose entire career has been to sideline other women.

    • Diana

When people cross the line we should speak up. When Oreo cookies were given out at Michael Steele’s speeches, we should have spoken up. When what was done to Liebermann was done, we should have stood up.

We stood up for both Hillary and Sarah, but apparently our voices weren’t quite loud enough. So we’ll just have to talk a little louder. A couple weeks ago on here someone called Nancy a nasty name, and I said something.

It doesn’t matter how we feel about a person personally, some attacks cross a line that should not be crossed. We can’t say it’s ok to personally attack this person based on their race, sex, or political preference, but it’s not OK to attack that person.

When we sit in silence, just because we don’t like a person, we’re just as guilty as those doing the attacking. Doesn’t matter which side of the table it is on.

  • Docelder

The New Agenda is to expose all forms of unfair and discriminatory treatment against women – not just our favs – all women

But, is the treatment Pelosi getting unfair? She is the one who keeps holding press releases and the shovel has her fingerprints all over it. She did just pretty much the same as call the CIA liars. Should she not have to account for her actions at all? She is third in line to be POTUS. Can she not handle this on her own? I don’t mean to be unnecessarily antagonistic, I just really don’t see the discrimination in this.

    • HC123

No, she shouldnt have to defend against a “Pussy Galore” video just because she called the CIA liars.

She should account for her actions, absolutely.

But lets knock off the BS attacks about her vagina.

I am sure Ms. Pelosi can “hold her own” but thats not really the point.

      • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

There is a reason that Lady Justice’s eyes are blindfolded. We must treat all equally.

And perhaps Nancy Pelosi will learn a humble lesson about the bitterness through the comments here, and the group’s efforts to speak up for her.

We must also learn a lesson: I personally despise Sarah Palin because of her views on wildlife. DESPISE her. But I will ALWAYS defend any sexist attacks against her.

        • ScottVA

You don’t honestly believe that Nancy Pelosi will somehow see Jesus and change her ways do you?… LOL She’s playing with the big dogs and she better be able to keep up or be forced out… that is the way it has been in politics forever… She wanted to get into the back pocket of Obama who turned around and screwed her by releasing those CIA records showing she was there during those briefings…. I guess she underestimated Mafia Leader Obama to be loyal somehow… LOL It’s all KARMA… what comes around goes around…

People need to realize that being in politics is no sunshine and puppy dogs… I’m sure Nancy sucked all of this up and moved on… WHY? because she is in a leadership position and the last thing you do is show your weaknesses…

        • FranSC

Susan, I think it would be the same for both Pelosi and Palin – we speak out against sexist attacks toward them, not speak up FOR either of them (as you said about Pelosi but not Palin). If you like their stands or views, THAT is another subject.

It never works to defend the victim of sexism because there are always going to be people who don’t like that woman, including other women. It must always be directed toward who said it, why it is wrong, and how it disrespects ALL women including THEIR mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

this has nothing to do with attacking her on the issues – if she screwed up there, so be it.

this was specifically about a RNC video comparing her the villainess in the James Bond movie called “Pussy Galore” – that is sexist and over the line.

      • Docelder

Very well then, to be honest I don’t have a lot of sympathy for her in any event. I wasn’t looking at it that way at all. I may be digging my hole deeper here, but if I were making an ad about her… it would involve flying monkeys and red slippers.

        • Portia Elizabeth

          LOL!
Granted the ad was too much, but after last year I will never defend her. She can pluck that chicken by herself.

      • http://noliinsipientiuminiuriaspati.blogspot.com/ adagioforstrings

I didn’t get to see the video, so I assumed it was about her crazy cat videos on youtube. I’m still reserving judgement, since denouncing something you haven’t seen or read is illogical.

  • HC123

    I agree with you Amy.

Lets not resort to the same old witch burning crap.

If we arent prepared to say NO when it happens to someone we dont like, then we dont deserve to win this fight.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Exactly. Hence my example of Sarah Palin above. It is excruciating to receive the reports on her attacks on wildlife, particularly wolves, but should she ever be attacked on sexist grounds, I will defend her.

  • catherine

I can’t. Pelosi contributed to the stealing of Hillary’s nomination even going so far as to force the super delegates to write down their choice early in the morning at the DNC Convention. This has NEVER been done before. The super delegate’s vote is always secret and the results are not known until the roll call IN FRONT OF EVERYONE!

This was a form of intimidation! There have been delegates who have since admitted that they WERE IN FACT INTIMIDATED.

To hell with Nancy Pelosi! She deserves whatever she gets. The Republicans and anyone else can feed her to the sharks as far as I care.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

separate it from her then…think of it that if we let this into the culture, it will continue and it will target women we do care about. we just have to whack these weeds when they grow – period!

    • Denise

Amen Catherine. Nancy, Claire, Oprah and Caroline can all go to hell. They were/are cruel, malicious, pathetic women. Their silly school girl crush on the pig selected and vicious treatment of Hillary are reason enough for them to get what they deserve. It certainly isn’t protection- what I hope happens to them can’t be printed.
Thank God I’ve stopped contributing to any and all groups. They always disappoint.

      • Janis

Nancy, Claire, Oprah and Caroline can all go to hell.

Let’s rip the band-aid off of your attitude:

“Men who humiliate, abuse, or rape any of these four women have my support!”

You’re cheerleading sexual degradation. I don’t give a crap who the victim is — whether she wore a short skirt, had a drink, was a serious asshole, or voted Republican. You are cheerleading sexual abusers. Stopworrying about who is the object of the abuse and concentrate on the people who are really responsible for this and who make the conscious decision to rape, humiliate, degrade, and abuse. Let’s just say it out loud.

        Some rapists are a-okay!

        Really?

And yes, that IS what you’re saying when push comes to shove. Period. SOME ABUSIVE MEN are just fine by you.

      • FranSC

Yes, I got this email today supposedly from James Carville to Hillary supporters inviting me to contribute to the democratic congressional campaign fund and, get this, win dinner with 0 and get my photograph with him.

After the response I sent flying back to them, I’m sure my name will be removed from that list. Among other things I said, “I can hardly bear to see him on TV much less be in his actual presence!”

        • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

Oh, my thoughts exactly FranSC. I’ve asked to be removed from their emailings but still get them.

I figure now the emails give a snapshot into the status of all things DNC.

If they are trotting Fauxbama out THIS soon, they are running scared. The fact that the big ZERO made a fundraiser to NV with N Korea shooting off missiles, says they are losing ground.

    • Janis

And thank God there will always be sharks. Um, rapists. Uh, sexual abusers.

      Sharks. Yeah. Sharks are good.

Do you even realize that these “sharks” of whom you speak as if they were blameless and impersonal as the weather are actual male human beings who made a conscious decision to target someone based on the one characteristic you share with her? So you have a litmus test that determines whether you think a man should get away with sexual degradation: was the object of his verb someone I dislike?

Well, that sexual degrader’s got a litmus test, too — does my intended victim have a vagina?

You are cheerleading sexual abusers. If that’s what feminism has become, then leave me out.

      • catherine

Oh good grief! Where did I EVER suggest that Pelosi or anyone else should be raped?!?!?

You’re out of line taking out of context my words! And that’s something an 0bot is very good at doing.

The sharks I meant were her critics, bullies, mockers.

The most powerful woman in DC remained a silent accomplice to the most vicious, sexually degrading comments “jokes” and YES threats leveled at Hillary and Sarah last year and you not only expect me to come to the aid of that Judas of Sisterhood but you presume to stand on a soapbox and lecture us …US about the ugliness of misogyny!?!?! We shouted ourselves hoarse last year pleading with Nancy to speak up and decry the vicious sexism against Hillary and it fell on deaf ears.

        To hell with Nancy Pelosi!

        • FranSC

Not only did Pelosi turn a deaf ear to the pleas to speak up about the viciousness being leveled at Hillary, but she and the rest of the mafia party leadership ignored the thousands of reports about the caucus fraud (2000 complaints just from the Texas-two-step-caucuses). All of my life I’ve defended our lawmakers when people accused them of being crooks. I surely knew there were examples of it, but felt they were rare and our legislators worked really hard.

What a rude awakening I had in 2008 when the people I had always admired became the worst of the worst. It was devastating. I really don’t ever expect to recover from it. Worst of all I’m wondering if I can ever trust any of them again.

      • Janis

Yeah! I guess rape CAN be a good thing sometimes! I guess feminism’ll have to recast it’s opposition to sexual humiliation — sometimes it comes in real handy!

We’ll have to let them men know who to degrade if they want a free pass. Otherwise they might get confused and fizzy and … oh, I don’t know … rape, degrade, or otherwise sexually humiliate someone we like.

        • FranSC

You know, Janis I’m beginning to think you are an 0bamabot. You are saying the most offensive things about this subject. How old are you? 15? I bet you are not even female. Janis is never spelled that way. Where the hell did you get the idea that rape was acceptable to anyone here. I believe you are at the wrong site. Go away!

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

well next time – if we allow stuff like this to happen – hillary will be the target- or someone else we like will be the target.

the point is we need to fight sexism when it rears its ugly head…it’s not about pelosi

      • catherine

But Hillary WAS the target and Nancy NEVER ONCE came to her defense!

Let Nancy have just a small taste of what she allowed other women to be subjected to. She may learn a thing or two.

        • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

again – don’t think of it for pelosi – think of it that we can’t allow this type of thing to be permitted. if we let “some” women get attacked, it continues.

just like palin was attacked for not being smart – that worked – now the other party is using it on sotomayor.

we as women and like minded men have to stand up and say “no more” to sexist treatment.

          • FranSC

I keep hearing these comparisons that Sotomayor, like Sarah Palin is being criticized for not being smart and not being qualified. I have not heard either of those things even once except the reports of them here! I have continually heard all about her superior education and her professional credentials even on FoxNews. But I’ve also heard her on video tape say things that have given me pause and the reason I can’t do cart wheels over her nomination and start defending her because she is a woman. I am reserving judgement on her until I hear more and especially how she feels about many women’s issues since there is no evidence of that so far. Some are assuming she shares our feminist views and I’m not at all sure that is true. As a minority woman she has had a different perspective, but not necessarily the perspective I prefer she have.

        • ConfusedAmerican

Its like the little kid who says….But mommy Billy did it first so I did it….

Dont matter….Remember we are trying to leave some values for our kids. Hell I think Nancy, Obama and most of thier DNC associates are the worse people for my kids to look up to….But we need to go beyond that.

Sorry but Im still reeling from all my democratic friends telling me that what Obama did was ok because of Bush…No its not ok…
Sexism is Sexism no matter who the target is, Stealing is stealing no matter who did it first or who you are stealing from…

Hey I might not leave this world rich in a monetary sense but I damn well plan on leaving this world know I did my best to be the best I could….Remember the golden rule “treat others as you would want to be treated”…..

If we are going to pull Nancy down lets do it the right way, because she is a lieing piece of …………(fill in the blank yourself).

        • Senneth

Agree with Amy. Separate it from Pelosi. If those of us who are angry about Hillary’s and Sarah’s treatment and stood up for them, then we have to continue to stand up and say no to misogyny and sexism, no matter who is the target. An eye for an eye leaves the whole worl blind, to quote Ghandi.

          • ConstanceO

And isn’t there another saying that says something like this:

And when they came for me there was no one left to fight for me….”

            You know the one, right?

Well, I am still fighting. The ad with Pelosi in it was sexist.

        • Janis

Yeah. Sexual humiliation can teach some women a few lessons!

Thank God for rapists, huh? They can come in handy when they target women we don’t like!

          • lorac

With all due respect, no one here is advocating a woman being raped, a la Sarah Bernhardt.

          • catherine

            Go take your medication. NOW!

          • Ferd Berfle

Oh, goody! Another obamabot possessing an IQ that has less digits than her shoe size. Can someone contact Obamabot HQ and see if we can get some trolls worthy of our time?

      • ScottVA

Apparently you know nothing about politics Amy… I’m sorry but if women want to be in a role of power like Ms. Scalosi is… then you have to be able to run with the big dogs. There is no niceity about being where she is…. not for a man and not for a woman… If one cant stand then heat then get out of the kitchen!

This is one reason why I love Hillary and I hope she comes back and bites Obama in the balls in 4 years. She understands this and she takes whatever comes her way without whining and complaining about it!

        Bottom line Amy… when you’re a politician you’re neither a man nor a woman… you’re a POLITICIAN!

        • lorac

But the heat is supposed to be coming from the stove, not from the fridge. If there is heat coming out of the fridge, you have to get it fixed.

If the criticisms are of your policy, then, yes, you should take the heat. But if the criticisms are of your gender, something totally irrelevant to your cooking, you shouldn’t have to take that heat – it’s that particular heat that needs to be fixed, not the cook.

And also – when do we hear male politicians ridiculed for their gender on TV or a party ad? Have we EVER heard the MSM say “he takes it up the *ss” all the time, so he’ll go along with that bill. Or, “he’s a dick”, or, “that politician doesn’t have big enough balls to pass that bill”, or “his balls are sagging, it’s time for him to retire”, or “he’s so incompetent, he probably needs Viagra at home”.

Why should female politicians have to take the heat for things that male politicians don’t have to? Yes, politicians should take heat for their actions, but not for their gender, and not just one gender.

          • NomNomNom

            great comment lorac.
I’m about ready to start retaliating in kind, I am so sick of this crap, every freaking day.

            ScottVA, you have been pwned.

        • NomNomNom

          BAM!

      • FranSC

Unfortunately, Amy, you are making this sound like “protecting” Pelosi even if it is ONLY protecting her against sexism. Saying, “it is not about Pelosi” is not getting it. Many at NQ literally hate this woman, and you sound like we need to rally around her somehow. I know that is NOT what you are trying to say. You seem to be focusing more on Pelosi than the sexism against her and your point is not getting through.

  • Karma

While she kicks the ladder out from underneath her….I am supposed to support her?

    No thanks!

She has lied repeatedly about what she knew when she knew it. While trying to smear the Republicans with that same info.

Then as an excuse for not dealing with what she now view as torture. She states that she was focusing on the election where she stole my vote from me….more than once!

I don’t care if she is a woman. The lying wench doesn’t deserve my support. I am too busy taking the knives out of my back she keep plunging into it.

    You can keep her!

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

if she lied, then she must go. we’re not standing up for that.

what we are saying is that we need to zap sexism when it rears its ugly head.

      • Just Me

Then change the title to “Sexism, and sexist diatribe must go! Regardless!”…as it must.

Drop the “Got Pelosi’s back aspect”!

Support for victims of sexism, in any form, should be generic, and a given, regardless of the victim’s status or situation.

Pelosi is no more deserving of support than the waitress/server at your local diner.

Besides, the waitress/server is probably a better person than Pelosi, and most certainly less empowered.

  • deathlrow

FUCK HER! Lying, steeling, fraud aiding shithead!

  • HC123

So being a really unpopular and scumbaggy Washington politician and a woman makes it ok to crack vagina jokes about her?

    Great.

I am really shocked that women arent rising to the top.

Saying this treatment is over the top is not the same as saying you condone Pelosi’s actions or like her as a person and politician.

Its just saying knock off the sexist BS attacks. Not the legitimate ones.

  • KmX

I saw the video and found it to be not offensive. No way Nancy Pelosi could ever be a James Bond gal. BOnd women are very attractive, brilliant and highly trained spies. We all know what Nancy thinks about the CIA.

If we want to be treated as equal as men, we must be able to defend our position pro or cons without first resortng to gender. Nancy is the most powerful woman in America. SHe is not above criticism however harsh.

Nevertheless, the RNC whimps that they are, perhaps did the right thing knowing that the Media will twist it.

    • http://noliinsipientiuminiuriaspati.blogspot.com/ adagioforstrings

Thanks for summarizing the video since I didn’t get a chance to see it before it was censored for attacking the wrong people. I suppose the RNC thought they were being cutting edge & hip by spoofing James Bond after he’s been around for 40 or so years….

  • HC123

Well, I guess there nothing like a witch burning.

Humans simply do not progress over time.

    Its the same old crap.

And no, I dont like Pelosi. But that doesnt mean anything goes. Or I guess it does.

    So disappointing.

  • FLDemFem

I will not defend Nancy Pelosi against sexist attacks. She claimed there was no sexism in the attacks on Hillary by the Democratic Party and their chosen candidate. We all know that was either a lie or deliberate blindness. Let her find out what it’s like to be attacked in the same disgusting ways that Hillary was. Then let her say there is no sexism. She made her bed, let her lie in it. She seems to lie very well.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

if we let this stuff into the culture and don’t speak out, it will continue…it’s not about pelosi, it’s about speaking out to the RNC and saying this is not appropriate. attack on the issues fine – but this crosses the line.

    • getfitnow

Right FLDemFem–she said she was “busy” with work in the House and wasn’t aware of it. She’s a big girl and can defend herself. See this is what happens when you run rough shod over people. The sympathy meter goes down.

    • Janis

I will not defend Nancy Pelosi against sexist attacks.

You and every frat boy I’ve ever known would agree then that some chicks have it coming.

      • FLDemFem

As someone who was once the victim of an attempted rape, I can assure you that I do not think any woman has it coming. But Nancy Pelosi seems to think it’s ok to have that attitude. So I say let her see what it’s like to sit in the hot seat, be attacked like Hillary was, and say it isn’t sexism.

By the way, my attacker ended up in the hospital with my knife in his gut. Otherwise, I would have been a victim of rape because I weighed 98 lbs. and he weighed 250 or so. The cops patted me on the head and told me I was a brave girl, I was 24 at the time, and then took my knife away. The perp was out on parole for another rape. So, I have been there, done that. But thanks for your comments and assumptions about me. I found them rather amusing.

  • Craig Della Penna

    Amy:

This is a tough one. On the one hand I think you are spot on attacking the pond scum who perpetrated this sexist attack on Pelosi.
On the other, Pelosi certainly is hoist on her own petard, she gave no quarter in her vicious attacks on Hillary and her shameful manipulation of the democratic process and the Democratic Party to unfairly benefit Obama.
So, I say keep up the good work outing the misogynists but try to pick more deserving victims if you can.

  • http://www.missmalevolent.com Miss Malevolent

Well, God Bless you guys, cause I don’t have the stomach NOT to be a hypocrite when it comes to the maltreatment of Nancy Pelosi…I can’t stand that bitch.

Besides, she wouldn’t appreciate your defense of her as she seems to believe there is no such thing as sexism in politics.

But once again, I salute you guys for speaking out against wrong when you see it even if you don’t give wit about the person your defending.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

thank you miss malevolent – it ain’t easy for us either for the same reasons you cite…but it ain’t about pelosi – it’s for the greater good of women.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Very cogent remarks, Miss M. As I said above, Lady Justice’s eyes are blindfolded. We must point out sexism any — and every — time we see it. It is the ONLY way we will overcome it.

I also said elsewhere in this thread that I might have personally framed the statement differently — with a healthy dose of criticism of Pelosi to begin with — but there is also the critical importance of “principles before personalities.”

I admire The New Agenda’s courage in sticking its neck out. I stuck my neck out last year when I was supportive of Sarah Palin against innumerable sexist attacks, even though personally I was devoutly opposed to many of her political positions. It was personally very difficult for me. But — having seen what was done to Hillary — i knew that I had to stand up for EVERY woman.

Pelosi may never appreciate, or know, that women who oppose her politically have stood up for her against a sexist attack. But I will know. And so will the women who participated in the group’s effort.

      • http://! stodgie

the truth is susan very few people besides the democrats in congress will stand up for pelosi. there won’t be a groundswell for her. watch and see! she is not hillary and has no great love built up for her.

  • KmX

And by the way Bill CLinton said in an interview that some blacks ask him to forgive them for calling him a racist and their treatement of hillary. They said it was jutst all politics and they really wanted to win. Bill said all is forgiven and he knew it was politics. He even went on to say how they gave him a big hug.

The audcaity of some people to do that to the CLintons.

    • candymarl

I wonder how those black folk in the car dealership business feel about Obama now?

According to one website (forget the name) as many as 32 black car dealerships are on the chopping block. Maxine Waters expressed her concern about the matter in a Congressional hearing the Chrysler executives.

She appeared to be blaming them but, according to sources inside Chrysler, the pressure to close dealerships came from the WH.

I wonder if she’ll ever admit that.

    • lorac

I wish that Bill could have politely let them know that we all “hope” for “change” in politics, that lies and cheating do NOT have to be a part of it. Maybe told the young’uns that winning at any cost isn’t really winning. Maybe a quick little lesson on personal integrity. I guess maybe he knew that Chicago Style wouldn’t “get it”, and just moved on…. I grew up reading children’s books that stressed these higher order values – I guess the kids just don’t get the same learning with video games….

  • candymarl

After Nancy “impeachment is off the table” Pelosi dumped on Hillary that was the last straw,

    Or so I thought.

I didn’t see the video so I can’t comment on it.

However, you can criticize a woman or a man without referring to their private parts.

Ms. Pelosi deserves her share of criticism. Just not this kind of criticism IMHO.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

agree her criticism on the job is fair game.

our mantra is “issues are fair game. sexist treatment is not fair game.”

      keep it in bounds!

  • Diana L. C.

    Amy,

I agree with you. You can attack and woman on what she says or does, but do not attack her in any way that puts her down as a woman, because she is “just” a woman.

It’s the only way we’ll get past sexism and its negative effects.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

thanks Diana – we need to defend all women – even those that we need to hold our noses while doing!

      • FranSC

I do not see this as “defending all women”. Perhaps we are splitting hairs here. I would never call speaking out against that horrid-sounding video as an egregious attack on Pelosi. I would characterize it as an attack on all women everywhere. Not one word would need to be said for or against NP.

Amy, I feel like you are still trying to sneak “support” in there for Nancy Pelosi. It reminds me of crap I used to hear N.O.W. say. I have been told that was not always the case in other states. In my city, the members of N.O.W. did not work through political channels to change things. It was knee-jerk reactions that never seemed to win respect for their causes. I do not want to be seen as a woman that merely supports a woman because she has ovaries. I have no problem denouncing sexism about anyone, but I will under no circumstances ever look like I am protecting women like NP. In my mind there is a world of difference.

  • helenk

I understand what you are saying. Fight the attack mode against ALL women.
Axis Sally Pelosi would not do that for other women but we have to be better than that. It will not always be Axis Sally under attack. The attacks must be stopped here and now. If not us, the who?

WOMEN WITH INTELLIGENCE AND EXPERIENCE,MEN WHO SUPPORT THEM AND COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS

    PUMAS,BUBBAS,EQUALISTS AND THOSE PEOPLE RULE

  • imustprotest

Did anyone ask Nancy if she wanted to be defended on this? Afterall, she saw NO SEXISM in the 2008 primary/caucus fraudshow/thugfest. Maybe she doesn’t think the video is sexist or offensive?????

    • lorac

But it’s not FOR her – it’s for the future treatment of all women. It would be all of us saying that this treatment is sexist – it wouldn’t be us saying that Nancy thinks it’s sexist…

And if she doesn’t like us doing it – well, that’s just icing on the cake…heh heh heh…

  • arran

Somehow, Amy, some things you write make me angry.

I am a 20th century feminist and the feminists at Tennessee Guerilla Women site were NOT silent about the attacks on Palin. Some supported her and some didn’t. The blog owner said it best as she didn’t support Palin’s policies, but she wouldn’t criticize her. Hillary and Palin set an excellent example by not attacking each other.

You need to specify which feminists were quiet: NOW or NARAL, maybe?

It’s self-defeating to divide feminists up in 20th and 21st century feminists, and trashing the earlier feminists. Feminists owe their movements and successes to the first and second waves.

    You’re welcome.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

First: Tennessee Guerilla Women is one of the best feminist blogs on the entire ‘net. Shakespeare’s Sister is another favorite.

Why must Amy provide a history of sexism, and which groups were silent? Most of us know that already. I surely do. (But I’ll leave that to her to answer.)

As I’ve told many people, NOW, NARAL and people like Gloria Steinem are 20th century feminists — they remained silent when Sarah Palin was attacked.

Although I found it personally difficult because I reject and/or despise many of Sarah Palin’s political views, I realized that this must ALL STOP. ALL OF IT.

This blog defended Sarah Palin every day during the election. Sometimes I had to grit my teeth, but when I wrote about Palin, I did it for the sake of all women in the public eye, and in the hope that what happened to Hillary Clinton could never happen again. No Quarter can hold its head up high for all it did for the sake of sexism. And we plan to continue.

    • NomNomNom

I will not under any circumstances condone any form of sexism. I do reject the Pelosi video, the sexist coverage of Palin and all other women with whom I have no political similarity and for whose ideology I have nothing but contempt in exactly the same way that I reject the sexist coverage of women whom I admire.
But one must also point out when these same women undermine our rights as women. Every time they do so. To not criticize their failings in these matters is to tacitly condone their complicity in the subjugation of women.
I do not vote for, donate to, or give verbal support to someone, woman or man, who does not consider my rights as among their priorities. That includes Pelosi and Palin, and many more besides.
The idea that I should support a woman who wants to take away rights I already have, and has no interest in furthering those I don’t have, is asinine, immoral, and dangerous.
This constant trashing of women as not real feminists when they will not support the neocon agenda from a woman anymore than from a man, really truly seriously pisses me off.
I support those who support me. It is not my job as a woman to be a whore: I do not accept all comers. The idea that women must all get along and support each other– a requirement never directed at men– is as infuriating as it is impossible and undesirable. I do not get along with or support anyone who wants to curtail my rights.
AS for NOW and NARAL, I think their decision to support any of the candidates in the general was a huge mistake. Some chapters, like that of NOW headed by Pappas in NY did not agree with the decision. Both organizations supported Clinton all the way through the primaries into September. No one suggests that a pro-life political organization should support a pro-abortion candidate for the reason that she is a woman, yet the reverse is frequently true: NOW and NARAL are routinely taken to task for not supporting Palin and thereby McCain, both of whom are anti-abortion, even though abortion is a central part of their platform as political organizations.
This double standard directed towards pro-abortion women must also stop. Sarah Palin did not support Hillary Clinton. Do not suggest it is Clinton’s, or my, job to support her or women like her. I have no interest in a political party that does not support abortion or any other of my rights.

      • NomNomNom

 oops, I was not attempting to attach this to any post, sorry arran!

  • Seattle Moss

Pelosi was in on the fix which has destroyed many good lives.
Pelosi precipitated this collapse by playing politics on the very day that we needed consensus.
On that date which will live in infamy Pelosi proclaimed to the world and the markets that the United States was in a Great Depression. Pelosi played partisan as she excoriated the republicans while denying passage of the stimulus despite having the votes.Pelosi blamed the republicans for not passing the bill despite many democrats that she could have persuaded with a little leadership which is what she obviously doesn’t have.

I judge people by their actions and beliefs.
I’m free from making decisions based on race and gender. I only want the best to lead!
However, When a qualified woman runs for office I tend to show bias Because I believe women have been unfairly treated in the work place,at home and by the media. I guess you can say it’s one of my causes considering I have benefited from having strong women around me.
    Here’s a breakdown
Hillary gets my vote not because she is a woman necessarily, but her pragmatism experience, values and strength made me understand that she was by far the best choice
    Obama…Radicalized views,arrogance and lack of experience..No vote
    Caroline Kennedy..You know it’s a no vote.
Sonia Sotomeyer..Not a heavy weight intellectual like Kagan, however a caring woman that should advance women’s causes. Not a threat I believe to undermining the constitution.
    Pelosi….Disgusting…Needs to resign!

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

okay then don’t support pelosi politically – fair enough…

i’m just saying we can’t allow sexism…we have to whack it down when it rears it’s ugly head!

      • Seattle Moss

Pelosi didn’t have Hillary’s back that’s for sure.

Pelosi was just another member of the sexist cabal that wanted to gain power by exiling the Clinton wing. The only way to defeat Hillary the natural choice was to play the gender card.
The Cabal turned on her because they thought that in Obama they had somebody they could control.
Yes They are controlling Obama with their utopian socialist agenda which has a complete disregard to past 230 years of this countries principles and views capitalism as the villains to be degraded and destroyed.
The cabal didn’t realize that they were supporting a radical who views America as the enemy and watch in horror as we all do at the destruction of the existing economy and an assault on our liberties and freedoms by
        Hugo Obama’s dictatorial regime.

    • NomNomNom

“Sonia Sotomeyer..Not a heavy weight intellectual like Kagan, however a caring woman that should advance women’s causes.”

You keep suggesting this, in spite of her rulings against abortion rights activists and in favor of abortion protestors. Please elaborate what this is supposed to do for me.
Also as a woman I view guns as the great equalizer, I am not too thrilled with her lack of enthusiasm for the 2nd amendment either.

      • FranSC

I was so angered by NARAL’s endorsement of 0 over Hillary in the primary, I couldn’t care less about abortion rights although I am pro-choice. I will leave it to NARAL and NOW to fight for that cause. I do think that the far left is going to be quite surprised to find that abortion is not going to be one of Sotomayor’s top priorities.

That is one of the major differences in an ethnic/minority woman and a caucasian liberal woman. The caucasian liberal can be counted on to insist on justice for ethnic/minorities – white guilt if nothing else. That is not necessarily the case with the other two groups.

There seems to be lots of evidence that this judge has bias at least against caucasian men. She can’t help herself because that “rich history” of a Latina woman she speaks about is about bias she identifies with. So far, this does not seem to be anything for women to get excited about.

  • arran

0bama had a hand in silencing these women’s groups with promises, or threats, you can be sure.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Just as he made big promises to the wildlife groups that are now fighting frantically to prevent Ken Salazar from destroying endangered wildlife species protections.

  • bart

I think the best that I could do would be to say something like this:

Nancy, I understand you don’t support women against gender-based attacks, that you are an opportunist for Obama, that you don’t believe any sexism occurred during the 08 presidential campaign.

I understand you thought neither Hillary nor Sarah Palin worthy of higher office although clearly you were leadership material.

I’m offended the RNC used “Pussy Galore” in a commercial designed to undermine your authority as Speaker of the House. I’m offended that someone thought using a sexist double entendre was appropriate and that my antipathy for you would make me brush it aside.

It stinks. And so do you.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Wow. I hope you send this to Nancy Pelosi.

    • lorac

“It stinks. And so do you.”

      Perfect ending!

  • EWard

    Amy

With all due respect, Pelosi does not deserve protection just because she’s a woman. She is a crook. Pelosi helped pass a bill that protected her husband’s business in American Samoa. It shielded Paul Pelosi’s company from paying higher wages to Star Kist/Del Monte employees. Pelosi owns $17 million dollars of stock. FYI, please look it up on NQ, Google, or Puma Pac. And, we all know about her giving the finger to Hillary during the election.

Let me ask you this, should Jim Wright the former speaker been protected because he was a white male? Pelosi should be held to the same standard as the men are. She must be held accountable.

Obama, Pelosi, Acorn, etc. all need to be impeached or booted out of office for the massive corruption taking place in government today.

  • ConfusedAmerican

Guys Guys we are already leaving our kids, grand kids a huge federal debt—Cant at least we try to leave our kids our moral starndards …..

  • HARP

She can do the same as Hillary and Sarah did. Put on her “big girl panties” and deal with it.

    • Ani

      “Big girl panties!!”

I’ll have to remember that one. :)

Ah, a term used often where I come from. Big Girl Panties.

Nancy gets what she deserves. Karma has a way of visiting in direct proportion to the lesson needed to be learned. Why should we stand in the way of Nancy’s karma? She created a hell of a mess for herself.

As for sexist references, yeah they need to go.

Women are going to need to teach the new ways of looking at them to the world.

So what’s it gonna be, ladies? Whining or putting on the big girl panties?

Personally, I think Hillary put hers on everyday and I’ll take her lead, thanks!

        • http://! stodgie

          good post betsy!

    • lorac

On the one hand, I agree.

On the other hand, though, it will guarantee that many other women will have to “deal” with it, when they really shouldn’t even be subjected to it, in the first place.

I think the better strategy is to think past Pelosi, and work to make society, the MSM, and the political class stop using sexism to criticize women.

I did participate in a little karma today – Barbara Boxer sent me an email asking for money to fight back Phyllis Schlafley’s attacks on her (which I hadn’t even heard – but I am very aware of whom that woman is). I emailed Boxer back and reminded her that she wasn’t there for Hillary, so I’m not going to be there for her. Of course, I won’t help Schlaffley, either.

      • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

I think the better strategy is to think past Pelosi, and work to make society, the MSM, and the political class stop using sexism to criticize women.

lorac…amen. that is exactly what we are trying to do at The New Agenda! speak out loud and clear – it works – whether you agree with speaking out on the rnc video or not – they pulled it when our members bombarded them with calls and emails – sh*t works!

    • Janis

Yeah. “Some chicks have it coming.”

Whoops, channelled my inner frat boy there for a sec, sorry.

  • mel

Amy, everyone is basically in agreement with your stance on sexism.

But the problem is when this whole thing started.
It began with those who now occupy the WH (forgot the Iowa victory song Obama played?), and all those who continued to support said candidate, continually using every low life tactic (including sexist remarks and more) to win. Now those tactics they used to win are simply taking on a reverse roll against them.

The country has taken on an acceptance of this sort of behavior as exhibited in the election results last November.

To simply speak out now against it happening to those who use it today isn’t the answer, the answer is to take a serious look at every public person who condoned it during the last election cycle and speak out against them, from politicians to actors and meida people. When their actions are continually exposed and cause them grief, then you might see some change, but so long as they getaway with it and no harm no foul towards them, then it will continue!

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

mel…i wish we could go back…and i wish The New Agenda existed in 2008 because we would never have put up with the sh*t that hillary endured – we did our best with sarah but we were a month old. but we can’t go back…history will judge…all we can do is blaze the path forward so the next time the likes of a qualified woman runs for pres or any other office, she gets judged on the issues and not butchered to pieces.

      • mel

Ahh but Amy you can go back in certain instances, such as Letterman who used sexism jokes last year and is still making a living and enjoying no harm from his insulting remarks last year, same with other actors and shows like SNL.

If you don’t go after the messangers who profited from such usages, then who will really listen?

If say Letterman was held accountable for his words last year and that caused him to drop bigtime in his marketshare and was pulled off the air, then people might wake up, but if not, then most people won’t really care much!

        • lorac

I wish someone would go after Bill Maher – he is such a womanizing, objectifying so-and-so, and he called Hillary the “c” word. Someone needs to call these people on the cognitive dissonance they don’t face up to – he’s supposed to be some big liberal liberatarian (sp?). Yeah, he’s liberal on legalizing drugs (self-interest), but his “progressiveness” does not extend to women’s rights, as women not being chattel, one-night stands, or put here for his sexual amusement in general. Like BO, he gets away with behaving one way, but claiming a different label.

  • AnneinPa

I agree with you Amy. What I think is interesting is
Hillary said nothing and ignored it (sexism) and Sarah after the election spoke out about it happening to her.
Neither one spoke in defense of the
other, or do I have that wrong. I know Hillary is a feminist and speaks out wonderfully on women’s rights
internationally, but never about political women.
Did she and am I wrong? Did Sarah?
Do we blame Pelosi for not speaking out, when her opinion was anything goes as long as Obama wins and she becomes more powerful?

    • CentralMass

Hillary did have some gracious comments about her during the campaign.

      http://www.npr.org/blogs/politics/2008/08/hillary_clinton_on_sarah_palin.html

“Hillary Clinton released the following statement on McCain’s selection of Palin:

“We should all be proud of Governor Sarah Palin’s historic nomination, and I congratulate her and Senator McCain. While their policies would take America in the wrong direction, Governor Palin will add an important new voice to the debate.” ?

      • AnneinPa

        C Mass
I remember that quote, but it was halfhearted I thought with that “wrong direction”
quote she ruined a maybe compliment. Politics!

Taking a trip to Ipswich in a couple of weeks.
        Lynn is my father’s hometown.

        Taxachussetts!

      • Diana

Hillary also came out and publicly and stated that she would not be an attack dog for the Democratic party against Palin. Both women said some very nice things about each other and their accomplishments.

They had different political viewpoints in several area’s, but they never attacked each other on a personal level. Both President Clinton and Hillary had some wonderful things to also say about McCain, even though they disagreed with some of his political viewpoints. Just because we disagree with someone’s political viewpoints doesn’t mean we have to stoop to the levels that many did during this past election.

Like the old saying goes, “It’s a lot easier to allow yourself to be drug down to someone else’s level, than it is for you to pick them up(or bring them up) to your level.”

    • Ani

Both Hillary and Sarah were gracious to each other and never resorting to attacking one another.

Besides Hillary’s statement directly below, Palin made a speech about feminism in CA, I believe, and she praised Clinton at that time as well.

    • http://noliinsipientiuminiuriaspati.blogspot.com/ adagioforstrings

I recall Palin complimenting Hillary Clinton, either in a sincere or Machiavellian manner. I couldn’r remember any off the top of my head & when I googled, I just found articles declaring how evil Palin &/or Clinton are/is. I then remembered Palin’s speech giving props to Clinton for creating cracks in the glass ceiling, somewhat akin to Newton standing on the shoulders’ of giants.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

hillary never spoke out about sarah in a sexist way – nor did she go after her personally. i was at an event after hillary dropped out, and it was quite clear that the DNC wanted her to go after sarah personally, but she refused. hillary said she would go after her on issues, but no at her personally.

that is admirable in my book!

    • Janis

Do we blame Pelosi for not speaking out?

More to the point, do we give the men who humiliated her sexually a free pass?

Do we let some guys rape, as long as they pick on women we don’t like?

Are SOME RAPES okay (metaphorical or otherwise)?

Do we need to know the object of that verb before we stand against sexual degradation and humiliation? Do we need to know the object of that verb before we decide if the abuser, humiliater, or rapist was in the wrong?

That’s one litmus test that we don’t need — especially since the only litmus test that the creators of that video had was, “Look, she’s got a vagina!”

And keep in mind that even “undeserving” women pass THAT test.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Well, nobody can ever say that No Quarter shies away from controversial subjects! All the comments are fascinating, and I’m impressed that everyone has presented heartfelt views pro and con.

  • postmaster

I say stop the sexist remarks and attacks on women…matters not who is doing it. Then I say, get rid of Nancy Pelosi, she is a liar, she is in it to win at all costs, and let this be a lesson to her. She showed no mercy to Hillary, none was shown to Palin. Pelosi did not as much as say ‘knock it off’…….nevertheless………….

    • http://! stodgie

postmaster, it is often women who are enabling the insults or even hurling them as well. pelsoi at best is an enabler. i won’t “have her back”. let her deal with the mess she has created.

      • Janis

Yeah. Some chicks have it coming.

Whoops, was that the patriarchy talking? Sorry about that.

I guess even feminists think that some women ask to be raped nowdays. Funny how that word’s changed lately.

Thanks Ani for the memory jog. I enjoy your articles
    lots.

  • Portia Elizabeth

Amy and Susan — I applaud you resolve and have to add that you’re better than I am because you can overlook the person and defend the objectionable concept. I can’t separate Nancy from her misdeeds. But it means everything that the two of you have expressed your position and defended it without resorting to hurling insults and derision on those who disagree. Thank you!

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

this did not come easily…it’s only over consciously working on it that i got there. i’ve spent a life keeping lists and i’ve had to really reprogram myself to speak out for pelosi on anything….but i’m not doing it for her – i’m doing it to make this world a better place for women and our daughters.

  • Cathy in Ks.

Thanks Amy. You are so right! I too do not like Pelosi. But as you said this is not about Pelosi. It’s about the rights of all women. We cannot select and choose which women deserve respect. All women and for that matter all people deserve respect. As you and others have pointed out, respect is not the same as being in agreement with what that person has said and done. It’s a matter of principle. When we can lay aside our differences with another human being, no matter what they have done, and defend their “inalienable human rights” it says more about us than it does about those we are defending. Maybe Nancy Pelosi will never appreciate what The New Agenda has done for her. It doesn’t matter. As a teacher long ago told me “virtue is its own reward.”

    • lorac

“When we can lay aside our differences with another human being, no matter what they have done, and defend their “inalienable human rights” it says more about us than it does about those we are defending.”

I agree – and that informs my beliefs about torture, as well. (although the “laying aside the differences” isn’t quite the way I would word that part, but I think I understand how you mean it)

  • lorac

You know how in the old days the kids would throw around the insult “your mother wears army boots”, or something ridiculous like that….? The standard reply was that if you had to make personal (and untrue) accusations, then your ideas had run out.

I think we should start doing that when people use sexist attacks. We should very loudly start asserting that their ideas have run out, because they have nothing real to say, just scuzzy sexist attacks. Put them on the defensive.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

agreed lorac…that was what we said in our press release:

“Debating a woman political leader based on the issues is thoroughly appropriate. Attacking her based on her gender is a sign of desperation. Our country has seen enough of this to know better. Women aren’t taking it anymore. Sexist attacks are a galvanizing force gathering more and more support for women. The New Agenda is a perfect example,” said Siskind.

      • lorac

LOL Amy, I swear I didn’t steal your thought! Must be a “great minds” thing :)

        • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

          you go girl!

  • http://! stodgie

i won’t put common sense and my own personal integrity before sisterhood if it means i am supposed to have pelosi’s back. let her deal with the problems she has created by BY HERSELF. we would in essence reward her for stabbing hillary in the back and then acting the fool for selfish partisan purposes.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

but that doesn’t help…because if we let the rnc get away with releasing that video once, then they will do it again…and next time could be (likely) aimed at hillary or someone that we like.

we have to stamp out sexism and not let this stuff stand….

      • http://! stodgie

amy to each his own. BUT LEARN TO PICK YOUR FIGHTS!

        • http://! stodgie

there too many important needs and people suffering to waste your time on a woman who betrayed women, democratic principles and in my personal view the future welfare of her country. and she will do it again without blinking an eye. one thing you have to learn in this tough old world is to be tough yourself. you won’t stamp out sexim. sorry! you can be part of an important change in viewpoints, etc. i once considered suing a man who made sexual remarks about me in a business sense. i consulted an attorney and was told i had a case. i chose not to do it it because it did not serve my purposes. time and the school of hard knocks teaches one many things. i wish well in your efforts.

        • lorac

Stodgie, I can’t stand Pelosi, either. Can’t stand her.

But I don’t think this fight has anything to do with Pelosi – she just “happens” to be the current target for sexist attacks.

I think the only “fight” is the one against sexist attacks – no matter which woman is the target.

What I’ve seen in my former party, the dems, over the last year, is a real penchant for “it’s a sin if they do it, but it’s okay if I do it, because I’m in the right”. But if the behavior is wrong, it’s wrong. Now I’m watching for it everywhere – the hypocrisy.

I agree with Ani above – that the best approach when defending Pelosi from sexist attacks (not from legitimate criticisms) is to also mention that she participated in sexism, herself. I want to address the sexism thrown at her, but I certainly don’t want to give her a free pass for the “throwing” SHE did.

          • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

neither party stands up for women…we need to stand up and take care of ourselves!

        • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

My dad always told me that when I learned that there was someone always bigger, meaner, and smarter than me, I would learn to pick my fights. That’s been extremely helpful advice.

I have found that karma has a way of creating retribution without me lifting a finger.

Example: Nasty, nasty, sexist male boss and no route at that time to fight back. The man suffered a round of bad nasty cancer and died. Me and about a thousand other women well…we probably all sighed a collective sigh of relief. May god send him back as a concierge in one of Leona Helmsley’s hotels.

          • PainkillerJayne

My mother always said there is a special place in hell for women that didn’t stick up for other women.

            I think this rings true.

      • TeakWoodKite

AMy, you raise an important strategic point. While I tend to agree with stodgie on letting Nancy twist in the wind, I am also complicit in enabling the same resident evil. Is no room for a healthy cultural while I take pleasure in rubbernecking the rendition of reality that is Nancy.

It is an old question. To be or not to be…

        Penny: Hey Nancy…
        Nancy: Hello Penny.
Penny: I have this candidate I want too run for president.
        Nancy: Really? Who?
Penny: BO from the windy house of Slytheren.
Nancy: Ok. What is in it for me?
Penny: the office of the Speaker.
Nancy: no I meant how much money…
        Penny: For who?
        Nancy: Me.
Penny: well you would have to stab Senator Clinton in the back and undermine her campaign.
Nancy: What do I care about another women having more power than I do?
Penny: Well for one, I have more power than you do, but you would be hanging another woman out to dry.
Nancy: Like I said, what’s in it for me?

So I ask Amy, how do we start changing pattern of gender on gender violence?

        • http://! stodgie

how do we change it? one nightmare at a time! i am convinced that one of women’s biggest issues is low self esteem. there are many bad and terrible things that spring from that. prostitution, accepting violence as her due, etc!

          • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

Teach girls and women to be Elizabeth Swann (Pirates of the Caribbean) instead of Brittney Spears!

            Besides, it’s more fun!

  • Dutch

Some may have disagreed with Sarah Palin and therefore remained silent about her treatment. However, Sarah Palin did nothing to provoke the rabid attacks on her. Nancy Pelosi was vicious in her disregard for the sexism that was played out in 2008 and that puts Pelosi into an entirely different category from Palin, who was a victim. Pelosi was a perpetrator. Personally, I didn’t see any sexism in the ad. I thought it was clever and direct. Until the New Agenda pointed it out, I wasn’t even aware of what character was in the background. In any event this pales in comparison to what Hillary and Palin were subjected to and doesn’t warrant any “action”.

    • lorac

You’re right, she WAS a perpetrator. But I’m wondering if by calling her on it, while at the same time defending her from the current sexist attacks, might provide huge dividends – I think there are a lot of people who don’t realize that women can perpetrate or allow sexist attacks against other women. By calling her out and defending her against the attacks on her, what “sexism” IS might become clearer in many people’s minds. Some may think it only means a woman being passed over for a man in a job situation. They may not understand that it can also mean attacking a woman for being a woman, not for her ideas or behaviors.

      • http://! stodgie

lorac, that is creative thinking and commend you for it. but please remember we are dealing with the american idol generation. hmmmm!

it does my heart good however to see young women wanting to stand up and fight for themselves. many of us who were in the original fight often wondered if we were taken for granted or worse forgotten. while viewing the terrible sexism and slams at hillary this summer i wondered where were the young women. i have my answer. thanks! best wishes

        • lorac

Oh, I’m second wave! But I hope with you about the younger ones!

  • elise

It’s difficult to defend Pelosi, but I agree with The New Agenda and Amy. The harm sexism does to the ambitions and expectations of the young women who attacked Hillary and Palin must be illustrated to them in a way that will reach them and stoke the fires of self respect and pride in themselves.

Those fires blazed in the 1970s. I always loved this song from Helen Reddy:

“You can bend but never break me
’cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
    Not a novice any longer
’cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul”

How can we inspire others if we don’t protest the sexist attacks against women we don’t like?

As for Pelosi, I am not aware of Obama rushing to defend her against the sexism or her present troubles with interrogation techniques. I think she will find more support among women who don’t like her, but have had enough of misogyny to last a lifetime. I believe Sec. Clinton and Gov Palin would also oppose this video. They more than most would understand how offensive this is.

  • viking

    I don’t understand the problem.

One can, in the same breath state, “We do not support nor could we disagree more with Pelosi or her tactics, but an attack against any woman of any political stripe on a sexist basis is unacceptable.”

Wasn’t it Patrick Henry who pointed out that while he may loathe your words he’d give his life to defend your right to speak them?

Its the same distinction, one need only be clear about it. Standing strong for a principle does not translate into support of an odious person.

  • http://deleted Betsy Buzz Ross Latte

No one can hurt me without my permission.

    -Gandhi

A few moments of existential reflection on the depth of that statement would serve many.

Agreed Viking. Stand up for the principle.

    • viking

The Gandhi quote is a good one. Speaking only for myself, principles are the one thing in this life that I know will never fail me. That’s a life worth living!

      • ConstanceO

Fighting for principals is worth fighting for. Pelosi is just in the cross hairs on this one.
This is an ad idea reserved for women only.

  • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com Uppity Woman

Remember the old ad for Motel 6 about leaving the light on. The New Agenda is here, we’re moving forward and spreading our wings to fly. And we realize that some of you might not choose to be with us on every step of our journey. That’s fine too. But we’ll leave the light on and hope that you’ll come back to walk with us on this last mile to equality.

I have to conclude and I mean this sincerely. You’re a better person than I am Amy. So I wiil cry Uncle on this one. I know in my heart you are right.

  • basil

Pooplosie deserves everything she’s getting and more.

NOT only because she betrayed the top woman of the decade, the best person for the job – not because her own gender jealousy and intention to hold on to the queen bee role of house Speaker – but because as a fellow HUMAN she didn’t raise one finger to correct the injustice against HRC.

And for that I hope she crashes and burns, the sooner the better. That’s the same way I feel about Axelgrease, Deadfish, Cryburn, Kennedy, BO, Meesh and all the others who tortured HRC.

And Poopsie’s supposed gender has nothing to do with it. She’s a nasty, hypocritical, egotistical POS.

And, BTW, I thought the pussy galore clip was very funny.

  • http://www.sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

I agree with you on this one, Amy. I hate the comments about hair and botox (I actually think Nancy Pelosi is beautiful) and that stupid video. The RNC wasted a perfectly good opportunity to be substantial–they are morons.

As for Pelosi’s policies–now those absolutely repulse me!

  • ConfusedAmerican

I will say I would not go as far as Cynthia Ruccia said she would in her article. If I lived in Nancy’s district I would vote for anyone but her, even Mickey Mouse.
I think there is a point at which you have to look at the person and not the gender, race or ??? Hey look at how we got into this mess in the first place. Too many felt we needed a black man in office, Not a good black man, just any black man they could find on the streets.
SO no I would not just willy nilly vote and/or support any woman like Cynthia Ruccia seems to think some should do.

  • marktarheel

Pelosi is a hack……….always has been….always will be……she loved waterboarding…even suggested the cia do more of it……..thats much worse than the use of the word pussy……..not even close

  • mountainaires

No, I won’t have Pelosi’s back. Not. Ever.

But, I can strongly object to sexist and misogynist ads from ANY political party. And, I do object strongly to the RNC ad–it’s clear sexism.

I can’t just support someone because she’s a woman. I wouldn’t lift a finger to support DONNA BRAZILE either.

I don’t support gender preferences in any form; nor do I reject someone based on gender. I’m more a person who supports a PRINCIPLE or rejects it, as the case may be.

For that reason, I get annoyed by these arguments by New Agenda and others.

    • lorac

“But, I can strongly object to sexist and misogynist ads from ANY political party. And, I do object strongly to the RNC ad–it’s clear sexism.”

Unless I’m misunderstanding something, this is exactly what the New Agenda is trying to do. They aren’t trying to support Pelosi. They’re speaking out against sexist attacks, no matter the target. But it’s not about “having Pelosi’s back”.

And I personally feel that any mention of the sexism being used against her, should also mention that she has been sexist herself.

  • Peggy Sue

As much as I dislike Pelosi, I was appalled by the Pussy Galore attack. It never ends! And it will never end if we don’t say: Enough already.

I don’t agree with Sarah Palin on much politically but I found the vicious attacks on her and her family disgusting. Most of those attacks were spearheaded by “liberals” and “feminists.” Flip the coin and the conservatives go after Nancy Pelosi. And just watch, Sonia Sotomayor will be next. I’ve already heard comments about her “looks.”

We either fight sexism against all women, even the ones we personally dislike, or we accept the fact that when “any” woman regardless of her qualifications, competency and intelligence [ie: Hillary Clinton] advances in her field she will be subjected to the same sort of vicious nonsense.

It broke my heart to see Hillary ripped apart during the primaries. And she, more than any woman in politics, has been stomped on repeatedly since the 90s. But damn, she keeps on going. And I suspect, even Hillary Clinton, who has a lot more reason for disliking Pelosi, would not support sexist attacks on friend or foe.

We have to fight it across the board, not selectively. Otherwise, nothing will ever change.

So brava, Amy. This is one where you have to hold your nose to do the right thing. Sexism is wrong, always. Even when it touches a Nancy Pelosi.

[that was hard to write :0)]

  • Chris

It’s one thing to have someone’s back because they got undeserved criticism and mockery, it’s quite another when that person has brought it on herself. NP has been more than critical in her voiced opinions and attacks on a number of women and she has a viscious streak of power hungry self protectionism. I would never defend her and I am a woman. She showed more misogny than alot of the Washington men. She’s too pig-headed and egotistical to do the right thing and resign her Speakership. I have no sympathy for her at all. It’s the same premise as voting for a candidate because they are your party’s candidate, even though that candidate is totally wrong for the office. Kinda like Obama’s kool-aid gang. Look where that’s gotten us.

    • http://thenewagenda.net/ Amy Siskind

it’s not political cover that we are encouraging…it’s speaking out against a sexist attack. if we don’t stop this, then it will happen to politicians and everyday people that we do support.

  • Peggy Sue

Okay, here we go already on Sonia Sotomayor. This is G. Gordon Liddy on his radio show [this guy has a radio show???] making comments about Sotomayor:

“Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.”

This is a grown man, talking on the airways like a stupid Highschool jerk.

And then, when he’s not offensively sexist, he apparently finds racism a good alternative:

“I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, “the race.” And that should not surprise anyone because she’s already on record with a number of racist comments.”

They should tape this guys’s mouth shut! Hey, it worked for the Dems. Guess the Republicans want to take it for a drive: sexism and racism. A winning combination.

    Disgusting!

    • NomNomNom

I hate that putrid terrorist POS. Amazing how the media, usually entirely in the tank for BHO, avoided mentioning his backing of McCain and all of McCain’s appearances on his show, even after he had said he named his shooting targets after the Clintons. It was one of the deciding factors for me in not voting for him.

The New Agenda spoke out about Harry Reid in Sept 2008 – one of the first things we did as a young org – when we went after Sarah Palin. See our press releases.
