With Edwards Relevance Trumps Respect

[ADMIN NOTE: This is a new story, but in deference to Larry's extremely important story, we are keeping his on top of the page for now. - Susan at 7:00 p.m. PST]

John Edwards committed a mortal sin. He joined the gang of liberal elitists busily sharpening their long knifes. He chose sudden relevance over democracy. He threw universal health care out the door without bothering to consider the consequences. Edwards will pay a steep price for this betrayal. Plenty of us will not allow the American people to forget what he did and with whom he aligned. Count on it.

Edwards’ endorsement reeked of sexism. But that should come as no surprise considering the multitude of sexist comments coming out of the mouth of Obama and his supporters. It was only yesterday that Obama called a woman reporter “sweetie”, a derogatory term that people with respect don’t utter.

Just listen to Edwards’ endorsement for proof of his complicity in the sexism that has unfortunately become so acceptable in the Democratic party. Of all places.

John Edwards endorses Barack Obama

“There is one man who knows and understands that this is a time for bold leadership. There is one man that knows how to create the change, the lasting change, that you have to build from the ground up.”

One man this and one man that. Sounds like an endorsement for the same old politics as usual to me. Surprised? Not me.

The pundit speculation is that Edwards’ endorsement was sought because Obama is having some real issues relating to ordinary Americans. And since Edwards is the “son of a millworker” they hope that the association will bode Obama well.

The backing from Edwards, the son of a millworker, could give Obama a significant boost not just with a key demographic but also with the party leaders and elected officials who ultimately are expected to determine the nomination through their status as superdelegates.

It’s amazing that the Obama campaign seems to believe it is ok to allow someone else’s associations with you matter if the consequences of that association reflect positively on you. But should known associations with unscrupulous and dangerous people cause others to have a negative reaction then the associations don’t mean a thing. Just more of the same old sexist double standard.

I remember well when Edwards and Obama tag teamed against Hillary at the YearlyKos Convention. They reveled that they were able to beat up on a woman in public and get away with it. Oh, they laughed. I’m sure Kos did too. They followed through a few more time as other debates. Then Edwards decided to criticize Hillary on her clothing choice during one debate and Obama decided to let her know she was likable enough in another. Real nice fellows these two. Swell chaps.

Rumor has it that this endorsement was bought and paid for. Obama surely hasn’t been shy about spreading the cash around to potential voters. He learned that Chicago style politics trick long ago. What else explains how people with no connection whatsoever to the Edwards or Obama suddenly received e-mails from Edwards asking them for money on the very same day that he made his endorsement public. And the only connection that people receiving these e-mails had in common was the DNC. So should we assume that the DNC has been bought and paid for by Obama’s non-stop money making machine? They did strike a money sharing deal.

It is ironic that Edwards chose to make his endorsement in Michigan. After all, both he and Obama denied the people of Michigan an opportunity to vote for either of them. With any good fortune the smart people of Michigan will see past this obvious pander fest and remember who it is that has been fighting for them. And it isn’t a man.

  • Linda C.

Well the all of the sudden e-mails and where did you get my address is certainly making the rounds. Nothing will go unnoticed. No clue if it will ever have any meaning. I have the audacity to hope that most people are not as stupid as these politicians

I also discuss how there could be a backlash and any good Edwards MIGHT have wanted to achieve via his project may not happen as people refuse to donate money because of his ill-advised, ill-timed endorsement.

Edwards is irrelevant at this point, in my opinion. He put himself out there, but he’s taking heat for it as well. He’s earning his place at the table, I guess.

He wasn’t able to sell his own populist message, and he sure isn’t going to sell it for Obama, either.

Kentucky will disabuse everyone of that idea.

This flurry of attention is short-lived.

Why would John Edwards cash in all of his political good will to distract the nation for 30 minutes during the evening news?

That’s what his endorsement was all about – an evening of distraction. Let’s not listen to hundreds of thousands of West Virginia voters. Let’s listen to John Edwards tell us how much he cares about the poor and universal health care while he endorses the candidate whose positions favor neither.

Of all the endorsements, this one was the cheapest…. why would he hold out so long to offer up his endorsement in the cheapest of manners. I hope he enjoys feeding at the trough with Richardson.

I’m not sure Edwards ever recovers from this politically ….

    • llilytoo

politically he’s cooked, but he was already. However I believe Axelrod had something on him….or maybe knew how to play on his ego…Lord knows.

      • http://www.writehillaryin.com jm

yeh llillytoo, this rings true. edwards doesn’t need cash and it seems his wife, who did not appear for the endorsement is opposed to it. Blackmail sounds like the logical explanation – everybody has some dirt and the campaign made of dirt is practiced at slinging it (but only behind closed doors.) So could be edwards just wrote off his political life and causes to cover some dirty little deed.

Anyway, as you say, ever since obama’s crushing defeat in WVa we are looking forward to a repeat in KY. Trouble is, what’s their secret plan for his coronation on May 20 about??? Larry, got some ideas on that?!

Anyone with a few moments, go to NARAL site and let them know what you think of this pro-choice women’s group endorsing obama! For those who don’t know, they spent last evening joining the “stealing Hillary’s thunder” effort by making phone calls to huge mailing list effusively announcing their obama endorsement.

I pray Fitzgerald has a way to go for this campaign at the throat soon. If anyone can, think it could be this Rezko (former Gordon Liddy) prosecutor who might help save our day.

Tuesday, Hillary Clinton achieved an amazing feat. Outspent as per usual, and with less campaign offices than Senator Obama, and despite the added obstacle of George Stephanopoulos, Bob Schieffer and company electioneering on national television, on voting day no less, saying “the nominating contest is effectively over,” West Virginia voters showed up in record numbers and Senator Clinton shellacked the ‘presumptive’ nominee to the tune of 41 pts.

I should call Senator Obama the presumptuous nominee. That is truly all he is – an arrogant, empty suit. Of course, it was too humiliating for “the One” to let her victory stand. He could not even be bothered with a concession speech or have the decency to acknowledge the voters of West Virginia and instead allowed them to be called illiterate and irrelevant on national television by cretins the likes of Chris Matthews.

Today, Senator Obama, continuing to show his classless sore loser/sore winner behavior, delivered another outrage as the boys’ club had to gang up on Hillary yet again.

In order to steal the victorious news cycle from her, John Edwards allowed himself to be ill used by picking today of all days to endorse Senator Obama. I wonder if Edwards received a large contribution to his own foundation?

John Edwards has shown himself to be likewise nothing more than an empty suit and a hypocrite. His unfortunate actions have reduced him to the $400 hairdo that negatively characterized him earlier in this campaign. Edwards clearly said on national television weeks ago that he would only endorse the candidate for Universal Health Care. Well, that is Hillary and Hillary alone. Even Elizabeth Edwards voted for Senator Clinton. How disrespectful to his wife and everything she works for and stands for.

Furthermore, Senator Edwards allowing himself to be used this way by Obama and stabbing Clinton with this horrible timing is cruel and I hope will backfire, because once again it looks like the boys are piling on. This is heartbreaking for another reason. After John Edwards dropped out of the race, Obama blew his meetings with John and Elizabeth. They saw him I’m sure, as I see him: an inexperienced, arrogant know-it-all; a dissembling shape-shifter under corporate control.

People stand with Hillary because they believe in her, not because they have been bought off. Edwards now raises all those questions again of his sincerity to work on behalf of poverty while operating from his multi-million dollar mansion, and allying himself with a corporatist, who spits on Democrats while praising Reaganomics. I wonder if Elizabeth Edwards will have the courage to stand up for what is right and come out and endorse Hillary Clinton – the only candidate who truly gives a fig about the working class and health care for all. Senator Clinton actually does what Senator Obama can only pontificate about.

I am not sure how much weight John Edwards’ endorsement carries at this point. It simply looks low and tacky to me. After all, this is a man who was not even able to carry his own home state in 2004, so I am not sure how far his coattails will carry the insincere and elitist Senator Obama with working voters. If there is any justice in the world, it will not carry far at all and it is sad that John Edwards in one moment has thrown his own credibility out the window.

I wonder if he was aware, when he made his announcement today and mentioned Hillary’s name to compliment her, the nasty Obama supporters booed her, and though John Edwards was gracious enough to stop them, the man behind him – the one running for President of the United States – smiled at their rudeness, once again advantaging himself by their tasteless behavior, and showing his true self. I hope John Edwards has an opportunity to view this footage and see clearly with whom he has just made his bed.

One can only hope he hangs his head in shame tonight.

    • http://deleted AnninCA

Of course, but how much shame is there, considering the shellacking he got in the primaries.

      He’s a nice guy.

but ovbiously, a bit of a weenie.

    • Madame President

      “Presumptuous nominee” – I love it! :-)

Pat should do a cartoon with just John’s hair. Maybe just his empty hair, talking about why he threw away his future for three pieces of silver, I mean, a co-vice presidency :-b.

  • Andy

If you haven’t seen this it’s amazing…how can

“There is one man who knows and understands that this is a time for bold leadership. There is one man that knows how to create the change, the lasting change, that you have to build from the ground up.”

And ever since 2003, I thought that man was John Edwards. I feel I’ve been lied to once again. So I wrote to Edwards in response to an email I received today. I told him how sad and disapointed I was re:his endorsement. And I said I could not support his foundations or another candidacy of his again.

    • IndayHill

Share with us John Edwards e-addy. I like to tell him that he is a phony & he wasted the taxpayers money for making us believe in him. That he had a similar health plan as Hillary’s. Now he turned his back on us.Another Judas?

SHAME ON YOU, MR. PRETTY BOY!!!

  • Viktoriya

    After Gore, what more?

Hillary Clinton will be in the next President of the United States.

So why am I glad Al Gore is endorsing Obama on May 21? Why was I glad to see John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Jimmy Carter endorse Obama and try their hand at forcing out the popular vote leader, Hillary Clinton – it proves our point: she is ready today to stand up against the good ole boys club.

Thank you Al Gore for traveling to Florida to endorse the candidate who got more delegates and less popular vote. You have plenty of experience you can share with Obama. Hey, why not have Obama blame Ralph Nader and hanging chads for never winning a big state primary?

Facts: June 3, Puerto Rico, Hillary will finish the primaries as the undisputed popular vote winner. Obama will have enough superdelegates to start his MoveOn.org victory tour. The Republicans will unleash the dogs and by the time the convention arrives enough superdelegates will switch for Hillary.

And at that convention, when Al Gore, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Jimmy Carter and Obama all line up in the bathroom and finish throwing up, they’ll share a few breath mints and go out to salute that “tough and patriot American, Hillary Clinton.”

Her nomination will be history as will the political clout of the backroom boys, whose very names will be history…but for all the wrong reasons.

Now, I should give Obama credit. Al Gore is the second most powerful Democrat and after Kentucky he is one big endorsement away from completing the fix. But somehow, I don’t think the top prize — the last two-term Democratic President in our lifetime is going to help team Obama.

Bill Clinton after all, has to prepare to be the First Gentleman.

    • llamajockey

I have heard nothing about Gore endorsing Obama from Al Gore or anybody close to him. Where is your evidence?

However, it is very true the the Obama campaign has been circulating rumors of an endorsement for the last 5 months.

That however does not make it true.

It just means that the Obama campaign is sleazy.

    “Obama’s non-stop money-making machine”

Yeah, I’d like to know where all that money is coming from. I find it hard to believe it’s all from a netroot network of small-scale donors.

Who are Obama’s REAL donors, and what do they want in return for the $$$?

  • gorgonica

Everyday I am awestruck and amazed by Hillary Clinton’s campaign. In a tough situation, she is the lioness I’d want at my back. She’s Leonidas at Thermopylae and John Ephialtes Edwards betrayed health care, the hopes of working class women and men in America, and his honor.

I can’t speak for others but for me I want to stand strong for her. In a world of spineless politicians, she is a Spartan. I want to save something vital and important about our vision of the Democratic party, a party where men and women of every color, every culture, every collar, and and every class are equally welcome at the table of democracy and not spurned for a zeitgeist of a weak-willed wannabe king and his sycophants.

The cycles of history return so that we can turn the wheel and navigate to better waters. I want Hillary as my Captain. She can steer the ship of State through these treacherous waters and weather us through coming storms.

I don’t intend to fall. Obama, if he falsely secures the nomination through money-greased palms and back room deals gains only a Pyhrric and short-lived illusory victory.

To take liberties with an ancient inscription:

To Hillary at the Cumberland Gap
“Go, stranger, and to our Candidate say
That here, obeying her behests, we stay”

Though weaker allies may falter and betray
We stand with you and fight another day

  • llamajockey

Look Edwards endorsed because of unrelenting pressure on him for the last 3 months to do so. Like I have already said, next week when Obama gets stomped in Kentucky, Edwards will be roundly faulted for not endorsing him earlier. Edwards will just be another one thrown under the bus for letting down the Dear Leader. Hell now the Obamabots are going after Al Gore for not endorsing.

When I watched the Edwards announcement the expression on Obama’s face seemed to seeth with resentment and anger that Edwards had taken so long and was so solicitous and admiring of Hillary Clinton when he finally endorsed.

For the most part Edwards has been very respectful of Hillary Clinton. The one comment about her colorful suit at the one debate not withstanding.

The Obama candidacy is now simply incredibly lame. It is a complete shambles that rests upon the mere testimonials of others who have drank the kool-aid.

It has all the crediblity of one of those late night “Extenze” infomercial. You may claim “Extenze” makes it bigger, your girlfriend and wife may go along in claiming it is bigger but that don’t make it so.

The same geniuses behind “Extenze” are wrong for Alexrode.

Edwards could have retained the respect and admiration of millions of Hillary voters by simply keeping his mouth shut. Being a politician he was naturally unable to do that.

If he was under pressure to endorse Obama and he caved to that pressure then he proved that he wasn’t strong enough to be president.

Obama has shown over and over again that he’s a wimpy, whiny little man. Hell if you want a really strong candidate, elect his wife. She may not be “likable enough” to many but she seems to be a fighter at least.

The perception of John Edwards as being “effete” will not help Obama. Until Obama does something to show that he’s a fighter he might as well have a big target painted on his forehead for all the Republicans to zoom in on come the GE. And I don’t think he can do something to show he’s a fighter because I don’t think he has it in him. You can’t turn a poodle into a pit-bull. It just doesn’t work.

Now our Hillary, there’s a pit-bull. She’s a fighter. She’s smart. She’s hard working. She knows her business. She’s loyal. (Has Hillary thrown anyone under the bus?)

It’s easy to see why so many millions of her supporters want her to be the nominee. It’s also easy to see why Obama supporters hate her; she makes him look like such a wimp. And a John Edwards endorsement is not going to change that image one tiny little bit.

  • Madame President

Great article, Pagan. Yeah, Edwards definitely has problems with women, one of them much publicized last year.

He drove that “my dad is a millworker” thing straight into the ground. Because he is so prissy, that doesn’t have as much clout as it might otherwise.

I would say the vast majority of the superD’s that are left aren’t stupid enough to fall for this fake.

    • No_Obama_Trolls

Yeah, Edwards definitely has problems with women, one of them much publicized last year.

      Can’t remember, what was it?

I’m glad you asked! Here’s an excerpt that describes the situation last year, following rumors of an affair by Edwards with Rielle Hunter, who worked with him on his campaign:

One of the stories cited by [20/20]―the National Enquirer account of Democratic candidate John Edwards allegedly fathering a “love child” out of wedlock―was denied but not disproven. Despite its reputation as a supermarket tabloid, the National Enquirer is the paper that broke the story, which was confirmed, of Jesse Jackson having an illegitimate child. Hence, the paper’s exclusives cannot be dismissed out of hand.

Until this ABC report, the mainstream media had not touched the Edwards story. However, the British newspaper The Daily Mail media ran a story citing Edwards’ denial of the affair [see below].

The timing of John Edwards’ endorsement was decided to take away Hillary’s West Virginia victory. The treachery and duplicity of Edwards is unforgivable. I rather vote for John McCain over Hussein Obama, and I am a lifelong Democrat. Hillary is the only viable and electable candidate we have.
