Apparently the International Red Cross says it, on several occasions, personally informed Powell about torture conduct.

Let us not forget Pollwell's first cover-up: the My Lai Massacre.

When Powell disobeyed Bill Clinton's directive on "don't ask don't tell," Clinton should have done a Truman and fired his ass on the spot, and once Powell was told to cease and desist, he ran to Congress and the media, selling his oath to obey the lawful directives of the commander-in-chief down the river. Frankly, I think for a scrambled egg level officer that constitutes treason.

Sorry, but we should have never been in the place to "break it" at all. The fact that we are lies squarely at the feet of Colin Powell who sold out to the Bush/Cheney cabal.
Incidentally, doesn't "making Iraq a democracy" mean that the PEOPLE OF IRAQ should decide HOW they want to be governed regardless of the wishes and influence of the US government?
Unlike Germany, after WWII, Iraq has no real history of a functioning democracy. Even during the Imperial days, Germany had a parliamentary system and the members of the parliament were responsible to an electorate.
And, unlike Japan, after WWII, most Iraqis don't necessarily want to emulate the US. The Japanese (although they did have a parliamentary tradition prior to the war) viewed the US and its systems as being superior due to the American victory, so they were more willing to emulate America in nearly every way. (Prior to 1945, the Japanese saw their own victories as a type of proof of Japanese superiority over others--whether the Russians in 1905, the Koreans in 1910, the Chinese in the 1930s or the French, British and Dutch in 1940.) The other difference, though, was that the Americans didn't force their ways on the Japanese (just as they hadn't on the Germans), allowing the Japanese to retain much of their own native customs and traditions with the major exception of treating the Emperor as a God.

I'm curious as to the relationship [or lack thereof] now between Powell and Wilkerson. Since his former Chief of Staff, Col. Wilkerson is speaking out pretty bluntly and honestly on what happened, does Powell acknowledge him in any way? Do they have a relationship, or is Powell refusing to speak to him? To me, that says a lot about Powell, right there.

I have never forgiven Colin Powell for saluting smartly and colluding in a conspiracy to commit this country to war based on lies. He knew full well the intelligence was being manipulated, because he knew Cheney was over there every day--an unusual occurrence, and Cheney was NOT Powell's friend.

Yes, Colin Powell, knew his role, and he knew he was going to blame intelligence for it from the beginning--that's why he insisted that Tenet sit in camera range right behind him while he lied at the UN, after all.

At least Wilkerson is openly acknowledging it.

It was surprising. After Powell's presentation to the United Nations did anyone have a doubt we were gonna invade Iraq at any moment? The logistics alone dictated that it had been planned for quite some time. The most pathetic part was watching the Fawning Corporate Media prepare for battle also with the "embedded journalists" during the march to Bahgdad. They thought they were soldiers also, reporting the "we" did this and that, like they also had been through basic and were fighting alongside our soldiers. The fall of the statue of Sadam was their PR, right alongside the Administration's propaganda campaign.

very informative piece Mr. McGovern... You're correct, probably the only guy who could have perhaps prevented the Iraq invasion from happening was Colin Powell. How did Powell not have the courage, moral or otherwise, to tell the truth to the American people, after his experience with wars, lives lost and maimed , extraordinary costs, etc.? Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and Powell lied to us to make the case to invade Iraq and then bungled everything, to make matters horrifically worse. It is appropriate to point to the hypocrisy.

well I'm glad there's an accord, more OT, sorry Mr. McGovern:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124398585843379259.html
"A federal appeals court in Chicago ruled Tuesday that the Second Amendment doesn't bar state or local governments from regulating guns, adopting the same position that Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court, did when faced with the same question earlier this year."

It would appear that Blagojevich opened a door to have Obama's association with Rezko revisited.

Note: To Rezko and Blagojevich:
