Yo Bitches, Wear that Hijab

(bumped up from yesterday evening)

Pander bear Obama stoops to levels previously only viewed by Dante as he descended into the depths of Hades. Now ladies, you who are regulars here at No Quarter, please let me know what you think about the following from President O. Did I hear wrong or is he making the case that countries like Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan are doing as good a job as the United States in creating opportunities for women.

My response? Are you shitting me!!

More prosperous countries have more educated women? Really? Didn’t realize so many women got to go to school in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. Just because they are forced to cover themselves and proscribed from driving cars does not mean life is not sweet for the chicks of Saudi Arabia.

I guess we must admit that the women of America are in the same position as the women of other places like, say, Somalia. Did you read this horror story dug up by Peter Daou? Daou introduces us to a 13 year old Somali girl (child?) named Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow:

13-year old Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was stoned to death in Somalia by insurgents because she was raped. Reports indicate that was raped by three men while traveling by foot to visit her grandmother in conflict capital, Mogadishu. When she went to the authorities to report the crime, they accused her of adultery and sentenced her to death. Aisha was forced into a hole in a stadium of 1,000 onlookers as 50 men buried her up to the neck and cast stones at her until she died. When some of the people at the stadium tried to save her, militia opened fire on the crowd, killing a boy who was a bystander.

A witness who spoke to the BBC’s Today programme said she had been crying and had to be forced into a hole before the stoning, reported to have taken place in a football stadium. … She said: ‘I’m not going, I’m not going. Don’t kill me, don’t kill me.’ “A few minutes later more than 50 men tried to stone her.” The witness said people crowding round to see the execution said it was “awful”.

Just remember Aisha. Barack backs your right to wear the hijab. You you can!!

If it was like his Great Race Speech during the campaign, he totally screwed up history and current facts in an effort to pander to a particular group of people. He still doesn’t know what the civil rights movement was all about.

This is what happens when young women don’t want to do what an oppressive father wants, they are murdered. Is Obama trying to get the full weight of the government to bring their killer to justice? Their mother is protecting the killer, their father and the police has been met with silence. This happened here in the US.

What message is our dear President sending to the young women of America?

    • Wisewoman

Tek commented: “He still doesn’t know what the civil rights movement was all about.” Yet he had no qualms in claiming his mother and father met during the march across the Edmon-Petit Bridge and “little Barack was born”. In fact he was born 4 years prior to the event. When he told that lie early in the primary process from the pulpit of a black baptist church, I knew then he was beyond help, had no character, and was a lying phony. I am AA and I was so offended I could not and never will vote for him for anything not even dogcatcher. I would wager that 99% of AAs do not know that he told this lie. The 1% who do (Jessie jackson, Clyburn of SC, John Lewis, etc.) are not talking. This is why I despise Obama and all of them!!

  • ConfusedAmerican

Amnesty International: Stop Violence Against Women
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdYhmcVgaYI

Every minute of every day all over the world, women are harassed, attacked and even killed just for being women, daughters, Sisters, mothers, children.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Amnesty International is working to stop it. Making a difference is easier than you think. The first step is making your voice heard, make some noise to stop violence against women. Take action at Amnesty Internationals’ website. http://www.amnesty.org/

He is not on women’s side, nor for their rights, nor for their Human Rights. Women are FULL Human beings…on the whole planet, the fact that some men oppress them doesn’t negate that fact. We Must Divest From Misogyny!

Is he even on our country’s side. Obama is really weird…

How about women who choose not to cover their hair? In the US, no problem. In Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, not to mention Saudi Arabia–toast! Somehow, Obama didn’t mention that in his “partnering” speech. And here I thought that pandering was against the law.

He really should have stuck to teaching–being a professor and forever pontificating about abstractions. Or a preacher. Those were his true callings. He is not cut out to govern–he is too wishy-washy about everything. It reminded me exactly of the entire campaign: he panders to whatever audience he is addressing to manipulate them. It’s so old.

    • Elle

Can hardly listen to her ongoing praise.Just like watching another castmember in a bad theatre play !

      • FranSC

Since Hillary had a front & center seat during Bill’s presidency, I’m *hoping* she has become the loyal SoS to 0zero simply because she understands better than most how important the loyal aspect is. Or, perhaps she thinks her chances to be president no longer exist and she is trying to accomplish great things in the position given to her by this POTUS. Even though I understand it, it is very difficult to take.

If Hillary had not done all this sucking up, she would be an observer and not a participant. I still firmly believe we cannot count her out. You would have to be a saint to be as forgiving as she and Bill have been to the people that would have just as soon stoned THEM to death as look at them. There HAS to be more to it than meets the eye.

        • FLDemFem

She loves her country, and she is doing what she can for it. There has to be one grownup in the group, right? And with Hillary at State, at least the foreign heads of state have someone they can deal with rationally and someone they trust. With Obummer, he says one thing one day and another the next, so they have a hard time figuring out what is going on, and what the US position on any given thing is. With Hillary they can ask and get a straight answer. I am glad she is where she is. Imagine one of Obummer’s minions in that position, we would be at war in a week. At least with Hillary we have a chance of getting through this nightmare with our foreign relationships more or less intact.

        • b mathews

  • HC123

I am much more interested in my right to not wear hijab. I thought his speech was complete BS.

    • FranSC

He understands women’s rights no better than he understands misogyny, sexism, or egregious disrespect of women.

Unfortunately, I believe ethnic and minority people, including the women, are so obsessed with the racism they have experienced that it is difficult if not impossible for them to process misbehavior toward women. This is especially true since complaints of such misbehavior often comes from well educated and sometimes even wealthy women.

Compared to the racism issues they have always had, sexism rings hollow. Michele Obama is a prime example of that kind of thinking, aka, her college essay on campus racism at Princeton.

Because of programs like Affirmative Action, many well educated minorities have gone on to become very successful in their professions, further distancing them from any understanding of the problems faced by women in business. To them it is primarily about education to lift them out of all their problems. Not so, if you are a woman whether minority or not.

      • NoBamaNoWay

add to that the fact that non-whites are often some of the worst offenders when it comes misogyny. non-white men want to be treated as equals, but we’re supposed to “respect their culture” and say nothing when they treat women like sh*t.

      • trixta

FranSC, as one of those minorities you speak of … well, let’s just say you can’t generalize. I, and many others like me, have seen the gender issue clearly as it played out with Obama and have not let the race thing get in the way.

        • FranSC

Good for you, trixta. I’m sure my generalizations do not apply to all because there were AA women in the women’s groups I worked with who had a full understanding of the gender problem.

If I were one of the minority women I am referring to, I suspect I would be just like them – constantly looking for and fighting racial bias and injustice because it is truly a dark side of our history with which we should NOT still be dealing.

One of the regular commenters here at NQ pointed out a few months back how she had known some very wealthy AA professionals and assumed they had long gotten beyond thinking about bias. She was shocked when they shared with her that it never leaves them even after their success.

Obama told the world that were no better than those barbaric countries and that we are at fault.

When I was living in a predominantly Muslim country we would go many weekends to a beach resort that was also a vacation destination for many Middle Easterners. I have a real hard time believing the wives happily made the choice to walk in the 95 degree heat covered head to toe in black, so only their eyes could be seen, while the husbands strolled along next to them in their Speedos and tank tops. The wives would either sit on the steps of the pool in their burkas or spend hours sitting off in the shade while the husbands and children played in the sun and water. (Sometimes they actually did look like they were having fun when they were riding the inflatable banana boats in the ocean and parasailing).

        • elise

I was thinking about the Drudge pic last night, Teak. Remember the questions whether it came from Hillary’s campaign, The New Republic or Obama? Since he is now embracing his Muslim heritage, I suppose it no longer matters. Maybe the repeated badgering of Hillary by Steve Kroft no longer matters. How many times did he ask her if she believed Obama was Muslim? And how many times did she say “No”? Personally, I never thought he was and still don’t. As Larry said, Obama panders and I doubt he has any deeply held convictions.

          • jwrjr

Yes, as I posted elsewhere, the little ladies ought to be happy with a little pocket money (those fabulous micro-loans, so they can buy some reeds for basket-weaving or beads for jewelry), just as long as they can “choose” to dress traditionally or not.

Nothing about stoning them, raping them, forcing them into subservient roles….

And where was Meechelle? Didn’t join him on the Turkey trip, and skipped this as well. Starting to see a pattern related to those Muslim country trips.

There were so many cringe-worthy moments woven into this speech, along with reams of historical inaccuracies, but the MSM and most ignoramuses are lapping it up.

What he actually said in the video you posted:

“I am convinced that our daughters can contribute just as much as our sons”

    • sandi78

That’s the line that pissed me off. After great consideration he has come to this conclusion.

What was wrong with “women’s rights are civil rights”? Didn’t somebody say that some years ago in Beijing?

This is obviously yet another issue he doesn’t give a damn about, but he had to read the words.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhXA3fXpCFk Woman Voter

  • sjc-tx

I’m VERY disappointed in Hillary. She has to see thru all this crap… In my mind, she doesn’t truly stand up for any women’s rights , until she stops pandering political with obama… One could see the disappointment and almost bewilderment in Greta’s face tonight as she questioned Hillary.

    • Ladydawnelle

      AGREED!

    • lorac

I saw those looks on Greta’s face, too. And I’d forgotten how it feels to hear Hillary mention how great Obama is all the time – his speech was wonderful, it will be historic, etc.

Why does she need to do that? SHE is the one being interviewed, and she’s being asked questions about what SHE is doing. They even had his little picture in the lower right hand part of the screen on and off. Why, why, why?

      • elise

I saw Greta tonight also, lorac, and I was reminded of her own foreign policy position which he has for the most part adopted and they were policies I agree with. For example: Easing the embargo on Cuba, a two state solution for Israel and Palestine, diplomatic efforts in Iran and North Korea and reaching out to the Middle East in general. You and some others are confusing the messenger and the message and there is another thing some people don’t seem to realize. Hillary would NEVER have supported McCain and Palin because she is more left than right. It is delusional to have ever believed she would have left the Democratic Party. She has worked within the system since her graduation from college and it’s the politically uniformed who think she could criticize her boss and keep her job. And I, for one, want her to stay right where she is. The 3am phone call hasn’t come yet and when/if it does, I want her voice to be heard. Most of us who supported her believe she is the most powerful voice for Women’s Rights we have ever had and even though she has been SoS for four months, she is already moving to change things and never fails to bring the issue up in her speeches. We all need to get it through our heads, he is president and even if he isn’t someone’s puppet, they don’t ask Hillary’s advice on his pandering and babbling. If she were president, there would have been a different speech or no speech at all. BTW, Greta is asking Rush Limbaugh to be a regular on her program and interviewed Cheney and his daughter the other night. I’m grateful to her for her defense of Hillary and Palin, but Greta has been a big disappointment to me.

      • Scout

When Hillary called his speech “brilliant” all I could think about was her 1995 speech in China on behalf of women rights.

She was detailed, heartfelt, passionate. His talk about women was bland, vague, and insipid (if not insulting.) But it is nice to know that B0 will go to mat for a womans right to wear a hijab-not!

After comparing the two, I must say, it was disappointing to hear Hillary call him brilliant.

Watching it again right now I can’t help wondering if she used this opportunity to bolster him with some of her gravitas.

        • elise

What if she did Scout? In the end, it is her policies and her goals. If her vision can only be accomplished through this stupid person, she has no other choice now except to resign. That might make you feel better, but what about our country?

I’ve never walked in her shoes and I doubt I’m strong enough to endure what she has for many years without saying to hell with it. There are people in both parties who would just like her to go away and relinquish all power forever to make it easier for them to say she is a quitter and never deserved the position.

Even if tomorrow proof surfaced that would destroy his presidency, she would never say I told you so. Anyone who knows her history would know that is true.

          • Scout

What if she did? Nothing, really? I was just speculating on her specific motives. He has had a somewhat lukewarm reception on the ground there. She, on the other hand, seems quite beloved and respected around the world. Her reception generally is extremely positive–world leaders meeting her on the tarmac with red carpets and troop reviews. I think she was in damage control mode, as I said, lending her gravitas to an inexperienced president who is not bowling over the Middle East as expected. If people know she is really behind him, I think they will be reassured about American positions, and will look beyond his deficiencies.

It was also clear from her comments how intrinsically involved she in the conversations going on now around the world. She took ownership of the process and let everyone know she’s in the thick of it. Personally, that’s about the only thing that lets me sleep since B0 was installed. I don’t want her to quit unless that’s her choice.

But is it grating on my ears to hear her discuss his “brilliance.” Yes, it is.

          • lorac

But I’m not seeing it that black and white, Elise. I’m not saying that her choice is to praise or to condemn. I’m wondering why she can’t find a place in the middle, where she talks about her job without having to do a PR commercial for BO. I hadn’t thought of what Scout said, though, so maybe that’s it. Although, if Hillary ever does break away (not to stop being a dem), they will hold all her platitudes for BO against her, and say she is politicking.

Clueless. Disgusting. Deplorable. I guess Obama was too busy being horribly discriminated against as he was growing up (doing drugs, going to private & ivy league schools, being driven in a golden chariot all the way to the presidency) to learn about the hardships of people like Aisha.

Obama using the part of the bible “do onto others as you would have them do onto you” from the most corrupt political figure in American history, thus telling the world it is ok to be corrupt on others, look I did it!

Strange for someone lecturing on womens rights, his wife is nowhere to be found, do as I say, not as I do continually from this idiot! Why isn’t MO there not wearing head garb, it is er coice, would make a statement, but alas big mouth has once again been silenced as floppy lips is out campaigning for office!

HA! TOTUS had BO chokin on the phrase “child and maternal health” @5:10. Does TOTUS have a sense of humor? Or just a mean streak

What is remarkable in a Rosarch kinda way is he said he wanted to talk about womens issues but they mentioned only in the context of being a prop for his speech…

also in the same Rosarch mindset…did he just co-opt every talking point of Senator and Bill Clinton?

It dam well sounded rhetorically like was for the Clintons is fact. I hope BO understands that Bill isn’t “getting in the way”. What framework of contacts does BO think is using?

Microfinancing? So Auchi’s banks in are getting a stimulus package?
I just want to know, with offense intended to other humans on the planet,
    1) Why are we spending money we do not have to make BO larger than the life size blowup doll his speech writer owns?

Guess MO learned the hard way people just don’t give a sh*t about them, or maybe Leona saw the lousy table manners the Obama’s have in that waffle house during the primaries and felt eating with the likes of them would make her vomit…lol

Ok, so now I hear BO went to the Pyramids and said a 4600 hundred year old carving of a man named Carr(?), who Obama said was his “ancient twin”… it was the size of the ears.

He was the “overseer” of the Pyramids…

Ya can’t make this up and as a fan of Stargate, BO has no clue. :) Correct me if I am wrong, but did not an overseer drive slaves to thier death?

If I have the wrong name of BO’s overseer twin and there is an Egyptoligist in the house please correct me.

Thank you for your posts tonite, Larry. There was a lot of really weird stuff in the messiah’s speech that MSGNY seems to have missed. Their ears must have been plugged with pony sparkle dust or something. Here’s one excerpt:

I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles – principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings

Note the last line line…justice, progress, tolerance, dignity of all human beings

So, what are we supposed to take from this line? Every single day in Islamic countries, there are cruel injustices against women, gays & non-muslims. Maybe they’re just not considered to be human beings.

  • elise

I don’t know what he’s doing. If I thought his travels and speeches would change the way the world works, I would be inspired to hope for a better world. Bush lived in a world several degrees separated from reality and so does Obama. Bush believed he could change the world by force and Obama thinks he can change it with words. I hated the militarism of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and I’m sick of words and speeches. Whatever happened to the art of diplomacy? Do you remember, Larry, the patient and cautious way breakthroughs have occurred in the past? The foreign service officer meeting with their counterparts in other countries and moving up another level to a place where senior diplomats could assure a SoS or President the groundwork had been laid and there would be no loss of face or embarrassments when the high level talks began.

JFK made a beautiful speech at the Berlin Wall, but he got nowhere and as much as it pains me to admit it, Nixon and Reagan accomplished more with China and the USSR. If JFK had lived, it might have changed and to give him credit, he was strong when he needed to be, but taking the talk to the people is a dangerous game and could backfire in a nasty way ( see tapes released by Al Zawriri and Bin Laden in the last two days ).

That’s the problem with excessive ego. He can’t see his limitations. His casual remarks about Women’s Rights are not surprising. It would have taken guts to tell the Saudis women are human too and should be able to dress as they choose, drive a car if they want and even make their own decisions about their sex lives without being stoned or imprisoned. And may I add as Hillary did in Beijing in 1993 in spite of opposition by the Chinese government.

Larry, the truth. Am I living in the past thinking things should follow well established rules which have worked before? My personal dislike of Obama aside, will this work for him or will it come crashing down on our heads in a few months or in the next four years?

  • http://www.sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

Obama always chooses the back door to get where he wants. He can play dumb/inexperienced about the true hardships and oppression of women in this part of the world and all WE can do is blather on incredulously. There is NOTHING we can do to stop him and he knows it. My bet is he knows exactly where he’s going with this.

Wherever and whatever it is, folks, it is only for his personal gain, not for our nation’s–or any women’s–benefit.

I actually believe you are the bigot.. “the bigotbasher”.

I am writing to this here, because there is no way I would ever give your blog, your democratic underground journal, or any of the other blogs that you frequent the benefit of a single comment more than you deserve but I have noticed your determined attempts to link every criticism of your messiah to racism or bigotry and it is sad and pathetic. Recently you tried to link Cinie’s blog to being homophobic, and completely missed the point of the satire as you so often do.

Your behaviour is despicable because you are trying to provoke hatred against people who are not racist by dishonestly trying to link them to people who are.

You cry racism at every opportunity and NEVER address the issues. I think YOU are a bigot, who hates women, as are your friends.

I did not find Obama’s speech to be very coherent. Listening to it, there were a couple of parts that really stuck in my craw:

Agree totally with a previous commenter: “I am convinced that our daughters can contribute just as much as our sons???? He actually said that. OY!”

Programs to bring more Muslim students to study in America. I hope that doesn’t take precedence over insuring that all Americans who want higher or vocational education have the opportunity.

Overall, my impression agrees with other comments, namely, pandering, BS, drivel, arrogance.

Didn’t watch Hillary, but it’s hard for anyone to criticize platitudes such as those offered by Obama. I still think Hillary is walking a tightrope. She apparently thinks that she can accomplish more good where she is than leading a revolution. There seems to be an enormous amount of corruption in American public life. Nobody seems to have the answers.

Aisha Ibrahim Dahulow – may she rest in peace. I don’t know what else to say except that it would help to hear a true Muslim leader publically express some outrage and support for the people who tried to save her.

  • James Guglielmino

No, Larry, he isn’t making the case that nations, mostly theocracies, do as much for women as we do in the United States. But, you knew that a guy married to a strong and independent woman like Michele Obama wouldn’t try to make that case. One wonders why a man of your obvious intelligence doesn’t recognize the case that Obama *is* trying to make, that we cannot cudgel and strong arm, other nations into doing “as good a job as we do.” We have to work with them in a manner that somehow works to “accentuate the positive, and eliminate (as far as we can) the negative.” Thus, we, ever so slowly, may move forward.
Well, actually, one doesn’t really wonder because your agenda is generally to discredit Obama and you will look hard for reasons to do that, often finding yourself making fallacious and specious arguments because of that agenda.

    PANDER BEAR OBAMA!

The Empty-Suit Jerk Dear Leader had the nerve to go to a muslim country that needs a push in its human rights agenda and preach about WOMEN’S FASHION!

In what way is he promoting Equality by stating the obvious. In Western countries they have the option to not wear/wear it.

Angela Merkel of Germany and Sarkozy of France think he is a “joke” and either ignore him or tell him to shove it. He asked them for military help. They said “get lost”.

More prosperous countries have more educated women?

    Umm… no. Obama said,

“Countries where women are more educated are far more likely to be prosperous.”

There’s a huge difference. Just because a nation is prosperous doesn’t mean that its women are educated. Logic 101: The converse of a conditional statement is not always true.

Moreover, what is your problem with Obama’s statement above? I would argue that the contribution of women to the workplace in the United States since the 1960s has virtually doubled our productivity and made us the most prosperous nation on the planet.

Secondly, many American Muslim women wear the Hijab by choice. What does this have to do with the evil stoning of an innocent rape victim in Somalia? The act you describe is horrendous beyond belief, but do you disagree with Obama’s statement that women who choose to cover their hair can have full equality under the law?

I’m having a hard time discerning exactly where you disagree with Obama’s two points, unless you believe that more education for women generally does not lead to greater prosperity for a nation, and that a women who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal than one who does not.

Hillary is going to be on Greta again tonight.

  • Peggy Sue

Well, my main objection to this clip is the statement that he objects to those in the West who claim that a woman who covers her hair is unequal.

    Who claims that??

The argument is: that a woman should be free to cover her head.

    Or not.

Her choice, her individual choice without religious or political pressure, to dress as she pleases whether she lives in the US or anywhere else. If she cannot dress as she pleases, her educational choices are irrelevant. Because she won’t have a choice about anything, education included.

So, Obama offers a false premise and calls it good or progressive? And then we’re suppose to applaud?

Rubbish. The man talks in dizzying circles.

Pro-woman? Think again! For God’s sake, think. This is empty, hollow rhetoric. Pandering to the crowd.

Honor killings, anyone?? Or as Larry reminded us: stonings for a rape victim.

    • oowawa

Peggy Sue, I think you are correct, the argument should be that a woman is free to decide to cover her head OR NOT. Of course, this decision is too often made for the woman by the dominant males in her life (abetted by any female authority figures who subscribe to the party line).

I find the commandment to wear head coverings particularly odious for children and youngsters living in western cultures, where the hijab signals them out as outsiders from the mainstream. I know, it is a matter of faith. Whose faith? It is a “matter of faith” when Jehovah’s Witness children are forced to become social weirdos in the classroom because they are taught they must not salute the flag. I think it’s very hard on kids.

      • oowawa

In my my mind I imagine being forced to wear a hijab as synonymous to “submitting to the He-Job.”

  • Margaret

Thank you for this piece Larry and for your usual incisive analysis that I have come to rely on to stay sane during these insanely troubled times.

It is so beyond disgusting that Barack Hussein Obama would suggest Arab nations provide any opportunity at all to women, never mind as much as the U.S. Deplorable in every way. So, being laid on a table and cut as a girl, being imprisoned in your home, and being murdered (“honor” killing) for being with a man outside the one you are arranged to marry (read: sexual slavery), this is opportunity?

And your story about that poor young girl is beyond heartbreaking…
