Barack Obama, Foreign Policy Lightweight

This is more than a gaffe. This is inexcusable. And yet, despite a mistake that would disqualify any other presidential aspirant, Barack is getting the kid glove treatment. If this continues, it will be to our nation’s peril. Here is the video of Barack’s comments last week in Cape Girardeau, Missouri talking about the situation in Afghanistan.

Jesus Christ!! The man thinks that we are in trouble in Afghanistan because we have a limited number of Arabic translators and they are tied up in Iraq. Arabic is not the language of Afghanistan. Pushto and Dari Persian are the main languages. If you didn’t realize that Arabic is not the mother tongue in Kabul, no big deal–you ain’t running for President.

But a man who has been running for President for more than one year must know these facts cold. A man who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and chairs the subcommittee with responsibility for NATO, who is playing a major role on the ground in Afghanistan, must know this information. A man who touts his superior judgment on the war in Iraq, but does not understand basic, fundamental facts about the language and ethnic composition of Afghanistan, deserves to be challenged about why he knows so little. It calls to mind the line from the movie, THE FLY. Geena Davis catches Jeff Goldblum in the sack with a sweet young thing and warns her, “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

Let’s see the link to Clinton’s error!

Did you see how many empty seats there were on the stage behind him? I bet if you pulled back, there weren’t 1,000 people listening to him. Any applause? Not that I heard … for such a “moving orator, he makes Bush sound eloquent at times, doesn’t he?

Maybe he should have held a couple of committee meetings. He’s not going to Kentucky. Maybe he should do one Monday or Tuesday when he’s losing his ass to her — again —

The world leaders who see this stuff must just sit there and laugh their asses off. Iran? They are muttering “bring him on!” don’t you think?

I am so embarrassed for my party. He is such a stunning example of someone not ready.

  • Ellen D

I believe Hillary’s campaign knew that and knows even more but they can’t be the ones to reveal it or she gets bashed for fighting dirty.

Pashto and Dari (Afghan Persian/Farsi) are the official languages of Afghanistan. Pashto was declared the National Language of the country during the beginning of Zahir Shah’s reign, however, Dari has always been used for business and government transactions. Both belong to the Indo-European group of languages. According to recent US government estimates, approximately 35 percent of the Afghan population speaks Pashto, and about 50 percent speaks Dari. Turkic languages (Uzbek and Turkmen) are spoken by about 11 percent of the population. There are also numerous other languages spoken in the country (Baluchi, Pashai, Nuristani, etc.), and bilingualism is very common.

Since you are presumably sitting at a computer, there is really no excuse for your stupidity. At least Barry can be excused for speaking off the cuff where he is always at risk for saying something stupid (57 states) or being confused (MSM personality’s name who is interviewing him)

Bill tells Kentucky voters Hillary’s not beaten yet
By Steve Lannen | Lexington Herald-Leader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Former President Bill Clinton on Thursday gave no sign his wife’s presidential campaign is ready to fold up its tent and return to New York.

Sen. Hillary Clinton is widely expected to win Kentucky’s Democratic primary election on Tuesday, but she trails Sen. Barack Obama in the number of delegates needed to land the party’s nomination.

Clinton, however, used his appearance Thursday afternoon at Butler Traditional High School in Louisville to tell people not to listen to the media and others who have written off his wife’s chances of becoming the Democratic nominee. He emphasized her blowout victory earlier this week in West Virginia and said she has won several swing states thought to be key to a Democratic victory against Republican Sen. John McCain in November.

“They’ve tried to bury her more times than a cat’s got lives,” Clinton said.

I think the trolls have been lulled once again into a false sense of security. They think their hundreds of comments on the “Whitey” video articles somehow stopped the video from existing or the billionaire and his million dollar bounty from existing. They also think the upcoming “mission accomplished” will actually work. They can ask Bush if that worked for him.

    Three points.

    1. But they have, for the most part, lived in Afghanistan for over seven years. Most of them likely speak the local languages by now.

    2. The principal use of translators is to question locals for information about Al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents. Questioning suspects at a central location requires far fewer translators.

    3. Sen. Obama corrected himself later. Why the knee-jerk defense of his earlier error.

Arabic (الْعَرَبيّة al-ʿarabiyyah or just عَرَبيْ ʿarabī), in terms of the number of speakers, is the largest living member of the Semitic language family. Classified as Central Semitic, it is closely related to Hebrew and Aramaic and has its roots in a Proto-Semitic common ancestor. In ISO 639-3, modern Arabic is classified as a macrolanguage with 27 sub-languages. These varieties are spoken throughout the Arab world, and Standard Arabic is widely studied and used throughout the Islamic world.

    Hi Larry,
Thanks for posting this. I hope all is well.

Almost no service members spoke either Dari or Pashto, the two main languages of Afghanistan. The Pentagon, and many of the nation’s universities, had been focusing on Russian and other languages from the Cold War.

Within a couple months after Sept. 11, the DLI created the Emerging Languages Task Force, in an effort to quickly train students to speak some of the more obscure languages and dialects. Carson says in the beginning it was difficult to find teachers and books.

In order to build up its library, soldiers who were deployed to Afghanistan and other areas brought back any materials they could find. Carson says graduates of the institute’s course in Farsi, the language of Iran, were run through a four-month crash course in Dari. Dari is closely related to Farsi. She says that’s how the DLI got its first Dari linguist.

Now, about 200 students are pushed through the Dari and Pashto courses each year. The emerging language school is now looking at the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh and languages of other countries that might be needed in the future.

    Idiot

They sum you up perfectly. You have added not one thing here today. We have talking about disenfranchising the voters in Florida and Michigan and you said nothing. We have asked about his vote for the Bush/Cheney energy bill and no response. All you can do is call names and allege that people are “not REAL Democrats.” I got a belly full of that as a Clinton supporter over at Huffington Post. So. You can say that all you like. The people there were far smarter and exceedingly more clever than you and didn’t resort to “troll” or “idiot” until at least the fifth or sixth response and then they just took away my posting privileges. Barak Obama will never be POTUS. There are too many Hillary Clinton supporters — millions not even reflected in the caucus numbers — who will never vote for him. Surely they aren’t all Republicans. Have a great time election night if he’s the candidate of shame for the Democratic party. Lots of us will be campaigning hard against him. For the sake of our nation and the FUTURE of the Democratic party — one without Dean and Pelosi. Then people take on the real phoneys like Kennedy and Kerry. Their seats aren’t safe … and not from Republicans, but from young middle of the road Democrats who WILL push for universal health care and policies that benefit the American working class.

Just imagine how I feel!!! I am middle class, I am doing all right for myself but I am in no means ‘rich’, and Obama calls me ‘rich’ over an over again.

Additionally, in my small business (oh thats why Im rich because I run a small business and some number on my income is over some predefined notion of what a ‘rich’ person is, never mind I don’t take home any more money than any other normal person) and I can directly see the positive impact the the tax refunds are having on my economy at least. Yet the likes of DailyKos and Huffington post both have a daily diatribe against ‘rich’ people like me being the main beneficiaries of the Bush tax cuts. OMG, and you wonder why people think lefties are crazy…

For the record, I drive a hybrid, and I make and sell soy bean candles in a tiny chain of stores that also sell antiques(wait does that make me basically a hippy?). It is a small company that I (and my sister)inherited from my Mother.

Obamas plans for taxes on rich people will DESTROY my business, and destroy any hope of passing this tiny little company onto my children (or my nieces).

When I look around Michigan, it is small tiny little businesses like mine that are the only glimmer of hope in our state economy. But you guys apparently don’t think we pay enough in taxes.

    Gee thanks…

I read the comments on the rev. wright stuff, but didn’t watch myself.

Do you think that the comment about “putting on armor and not crossing the line” could be a
thinly veiled admonation to the congregation (damn that rhymed) to not give up the Michelle Obama whitey tape?

And that wright being there- but apparently not talking- could have been there as a threat figure.

He showed up at Maya Angelou’s birthday and I always thought he did that to attemtpt to intimidate her
    because she supports Hillary.

I’m thinkin 500k -after taxes- buys a condo in florida and starts an IRA. Nice change from just gettin by in Chi. (damn, rhymed again)

He plainly said, ‘And obviously they don’t speak Arabic, but the other many dialects.’. Where’s the gaffe? it was corrected. How is this worse than McCain implying Iran is training Sunni militia and continuous mistaking alQaeda as an ‘obscure sect of Shi’ites’… His errors were larger, repeated and took longer to be corrected. I won’t say anything about Sen. Clinton’s gaffes, because, again they pale in comparison with McCain’s crucial errors.

What he said is that if you have your Arabic interpretters in Iraq they are not available in Afghanistan …

They he went on to talk about the dialects.

    He over simplifies everything.

Its kind of like saying this …

What the superdelegates are afraid of is that with all of the national guard units deployed to serve in the Middle East, there won’t be enough of them to protect the Democratic convention in Denver if the party riots when one candidate is picked over another one … see? Over simplification can be very dangerous. ;)

I could be a message to BO’s followers not to be misled into believing it’s over for BO. To stick with him until the end. Putting on the armor is another way of telling his supporters not to listen to anything negative about BO…to keep their guard up around them so the “arrows” don’t penetrate.

It’s taking scripture from the Bible literally and applying it to his battle to become POTUS. You can find the reference to the armor of God in Ephesians 6:11 and 6:13.

Reference to these types of scriptures were used a lot in the 80′s when Jim Baker’s church was under investigation to fool believers and lead them mentally into a “spiritual battle of good and bad” in the name of God.

And I must stand back in awe of the mediocrity from the 110 iq who developed the system, and who feels, 5 years down the line, it can still somehow be effective, despite losing three wars, and failing to understand the larger objective.

you Obamabots are crazy — too bad Ray-gun closed all the nut houses in California.

This is a discussion about Obama’s extreme lack of preparation and knowledge about the WORLD.

Obama seems to be morphing into another George Bush. Or is it Ray-Gun that he’s trying to be? Ray-Gun was an actor and he could deliver his lines very well — even in early stages of Alzheimer’s disease in the later part of his Presidency.

Gee I thought that messiah Obama told his followers to make nice to Hillary’s supporters? That is too much to ask of the zealots.

“There was NEVER a need for Arabic translators in Iraq because there was never a need to be IN Iraq.” I don’t think you’ll find too many people here who disagree with that. However, the question is not about what should have happened then, the question is how we should move forward.

The simple fact is that most of us do not trust Obama to be the one to lead us forward. We believe he is to much of a milquetoast to stand up to tough adversaries. We think he is naive and fear that he may have divided loyalties, at best.

The translator gaffe is trivial. It is merely an excuse to mock a candidate who has already earned our scorn.

According to Mrs. Obama — all white folk are rich rich rich — and all black folk are poor.

So what color is Mrs. Obama — color her a racist.

GregA — you do have a point — we need MORE small businesses not fewer.

One of the great things about Universal Health Care is that this will be a huge asset to small businesses.

I know many people who have not started a small business because they don’t want to lose their health care insurance. And I have friends who started a small business and they have no health care. It’s hard work to be ones own boss.

Obama is a light weight on so many issues.

Those materials are very rarely translated in the field. They are flashed in an instant via satellite to a secure location where they can be translated without danger to those doing the work.
That being said, perhaps some Arabic translators are needed in Afghanistan so the question is, why didn’t Obama propose legislation to that effect? After all he could have added it as an amendment to all those Iraq Murder Spree bills Bush wanted that he voted for.

OK he’s an empty suit. There’s no argument there. However, I don’t think our real foreign policy problem lies in Obama or his advisors.

Our real problem lies with the American people.

It is simply beyond my comprehension that they do not realize that we are about to walk into a shitstorm, the magnitude of which we have not seen since 1929 – 1945.

    (1) The world energy supply is on half a tank and that exists in the most at risk areas of the globe. (2) China and India will one day wake up and discover each other: At that stage they will wonder whether they should geld us before having a go at each other. (3) The climate is turning on us with unpredictable and severe weather leaving one notable catastrophe after another in it’s wake. The shortage of food (caused by bachelors one and three) , notably rice, is breeding conditions congruent to those which existed in Paris amongst the Sans-culottes in 1789: No government can withstand it’s population not eating for three days.

And what do these mad fucks want to do?

There was an NPR story a couple of months ago about an American teacher who on one fine day took a walk outside of the small town where he taught English. He wandered along the shore for a while, noticed the tide coming in and clambered up the nearest wall. He walked to the nearest building, knocked on the door, and spent the next day or so being interrogated by PRC Intelligence.

He’d wandered into a Chinese Nuclear Sub Base.

    Who knew?

Americans think the Chinese are still trotting around in rickshaws.

    And the answer is………..

because he has been to busy running for an office he is not qualified for rather than actually doing the job that the people of Illinois actually hired him to do. Also, the fact that he is a political opportunist with no legislative ability, creativity or understanding of how things work in the real world doesn’t help.

His favorite words are UMMMMM and UNHHHHHHHH.

His favorite phrase is “I would be happy to have a debate about that” and he usually pulls that out of his ass when he would NOT be happy to have a debate of any kind.

He’s an idiot with a pamphlet of phrases. And his followers are so stupid that they believe his attempt to “Berlitz course” and “Evelyn Wood Speed Read” the foreign policy issues.

I suppose he figures we need “Brazillion” interpreters in Brazil. And “Chilly” interpreters in Chile.

George Bush wasn’t the only nitwit who went to Harvard and ran for the Presidency, apparently. I’d say between George, Barack, and Alberto Gonzales, Old Harvard has some fucking ‘splainin’ to do!

  • Clinton Fan

How much is Barry paying you? Are you one of the four hundred?

No, Clinton has NOT made “similar” errors. She knows where they speak Arabic, and it ain’t in southwest fucking Asia.

    Jesus.

I suppose if one’s only exposure to other lands is a couple of recent CODELS and a tour at an Indonesian nursery school, one can’t be expected to know one’s ass from one’s elbow. And that’s FINE–for a private citizen or a politician focused on domestic matters.

In this day and age, though, we need a president who actually does know his Afghan ass from his Arabic elbow. And Obama ain’t it.

  • Ulahane

And we’ll just be begging for a ride if Obama has his way.

  • Clinton Fan

It would probably be accompanied by headlines that say “Silly woman gets confused” or “Give that GAL a BLENDER or A MIXER–she’s mixing her Afghans and Arabs, OH MY!” And they’d pound it, and play it, day after day after day after day. Because they are, I’ve come to realize, sexist assholes. Misogynists, clutching their shrivelled tools in abject FEAR. What they are afraid of, I’ve no clue. Electing a man isn’t going to make them any stiffer. Or larger. Or more attractive. It just isn’t ABOUT them, though they apparently think so.

This was a MASSIVE mistake on Obama’s part. Anyone who has spent five minutes in Kabul knows the diff. Anyone who has studied the frigging region knows that Afghanistan is NOT part of the “ARAB WORLD.” I’ll bet that fucking idiot thinks Iran is, as well, and that they speak that Arabic lingo in Iran, and maybe even Turkey, too!

Good grief–it’s like he is taking foreign policy lessons from….GEORGE BUSH!!! The guy is about as sharp as Bush in the brain department, which is not saying much– he simply does better with a teleprompter. Now, he needs to take “Guy I want to have a beer with” lessons from George, and he’ll be all set….

  • S. Markom

Obama has made many errors in judgment when it comes to foreign policy. His latest was in response to the recent appeasement issue he said in regard to election in Lebanon Obama said that it was not the job of the U.S. to promote political freedom. Really???

But it began with his comment almost a year ago during a CNN debate when he made the statement that he would meet with Iran without pre-conditions. We recall how Hillary called him naive.

But it is worth noting that Sen. Joseph Biden responded in an interview that the idea of a president meeting with Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and others was “naïve.” “World leaders should not meet with other world leaders unless they know what the agenda is, so you don’t end up being used,” Biden said. “When I went to meet with Milosevic before the war, the condition I met with him was that no press would be available, I’d only meet him in his office late at night, and I wouldn’t dignify being seen with him.”

More importantly, the great endorser of Obama, Chris Dodd said: “Diplomacy is essential both to repair our nation’s fractured world relationships and move forward with a more global perspective to our foreign policy. However, there are some leaders – like Iran’s Ahmadinejad, who denies the Holocaust ever took place – which cannot and should not be diplomatically rewarded with visits from the American president.”

His quote, in reference to Israel being a “constant sore:” (From the Atlantic)

No, no, no. But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy.

He referred to Israel as an open sore, it was the first picture brought to his head when asked the question, there are no worm moments to explain this away.

And this is a reflection of the anti Israel faction in his group, whether it’s Farrakhan, or McPeak.

While any of us would agree Israeli foreign policy should be reevaluated none of us would refer to Israel in terms of being in open sore. Israel’s problems are a result of misdirected policies, IMO, it faces VERY real danger, big difference from what Obama is insinuating. And I have no sympathy for those who would keep the Palestinians in an apartheid state. Many Israelis realize this, just as many Americans realize Cheney is violently inept. Obama used a broad brush to paint an otherwise civil culture as infected.

    Israel is not Odinga.

This was not a misnomer, this was reflective of how, he, and his money supporters think.

Especially given his association with Ayers, Hamas, Rezko, Farrakhan and Ondinga.

What Obama said wasn’t a criticism of Israeli foreign policy, THAT would be legitimate, would have been a legitimate comment, this was a reflection of his true view of Israel, this man surrounded by those who irrationally hate Jews, trying to paste false wallpaper, referring, couching it, in concern, ie ” I don’t want the parents to suffer, I’m a parent, too.”

Problem is, Jew hatred in the hands of dictators (Obama’s buddies, from Hamas, to Ondinga, to Chavez, and the rest) has shown itself to be dangerous, there is historical precedence, period.

Couple that with the Middle Eastern drive to destroy Israel, its’ not unthinkable Obama buys into this, I just LOOK at his friends, then remember what Bush and Cheney did at GITMO, and with the Constitution.

    It can happen.

I think the idea of Israel and the reality of Israel is one that I find important to me personally. Because it speaks to my history of being uprooted, it speaks to the African-American story of exodus, it describes the history of overcoming great odds and a courage and a commitment to carving out a democracy and prosperity in the midst of hardscrabble land.

Trolls assume Obama will get troops out of Iraq. Didn’t they read the Obama foreign policy adviser Samantha Power interview? (They are so busy hassling us they cannot be bothered with anything so mundane as researching their candidate.) Remember the interview where Samantha Power called Hillary a monster and got herself fired from the Obama campaign? She said that all of Obama’s talk about withdrawing from Iraq is campaign talk and open to revision after he becomes president. Hasn’t Obama himself talked about leaving contractors in Iraq? i.e. mercenaries, Blackwater.

The Power admission that withdrawal from Iraq is campaign talk is very similar to another incident involving an Obama campaign adviser. Obama’s economic policy advisor Austan Goolsbee told the the Canadian consul in Chicago that any Obama mention of dumping NAFTA was just campaign talk.

Obama denied the meeting had taken place until the Canadian government released the minutes from the meeting. Then Obama surrogates screamed “Hillary did it too.” The Canadian government denied meeting with anyone from the Clinton campaign to discuss NAFTA.

    Defeating trolls:

Yes ignoring them is fun, but those new to the site really don’t read that and read every post. It causes them to be sad and disheartened.

So, one key way is to mimic them once they post, write as their name and say how sorry you are that you were a troll and move towards loving Hillary.

Its instant karma and gets them freaked out. So those 400 fake trolls will never hurt me! Try it on the next troll and you’ll love yourself even more. Heck, use their name when you reply to their comment with a quote from Hillary or something positive from Hillary. It’ll really surprise new readers and neutralise the trolls. They then become useless against the newbies and won’t be moulded into depression…

Right. So we should go elect McCain who can’t even tell the difference between the Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan and has continuously confused the three and had to be corrected by his aids repeatedly on live TV.

  • Ann

This is the stupidest criticism I have heard to date of Obama. The point of Obama’s comments are that the military should be focusing on having interpreters who speak the language of the country the military is operating in. The president does not need to know what that language is specifically to make that policy deicion. And I wouldn’t expect him or Hilary Clinton to know what specific tribal dialect or whatever is spoken in Afghanistan. I would expect them to know the difference between Sunni and Shiite and which group Al Quaeda is associated with because I do and it would be necessary for whoever is president to be aware of these religious and political divisions in the Arab world. This cannot possibly be your real problem with Obama so what is?

  • Tom Plumb

Do yourself a favor, and try to understand what the real criticism is, you just look stupid.

And being this naive, deliberately, or otherwise, allows others to troll YOU, something you seem incapapble of grasping.

Maybe it’s because you’re so smart, and so talented, maybe it’s because you’re the best, who knows, but given the loss, here, despite all the buzz flash, it’s apparent you don’t really understand what is happening.

Projection doesnt work, it’s used against you.

  • beebop

Don’t ask him about Dewey beats Truman. He’s all over that. He was there!

  • Dan R.

John McCain will win comfortably in November for the following reasons:

    1) The GOP is going to hammer Obama with Jerimiah Wright, Tony Rezko and Bill Ayers relentlessly in its TV ads.

    2) The economy is bottoming now and will be on the upturn in November.

    3) The speculative bubble in oil prices will have broken, leading to a significant price drop as speculators scramble to unwind their long positions and go short. (The real clearing price for oil is probably around $90 a barrell.)

    4) It will be obvious that the Iraq War is pretty much over and that the good guys have won. Al-Qeada in Iraq has been basically run out of the country and Prime Minister Maliki and the Iraqi Army have soundly thumped Moqtada Al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army. After the 45-day pause this Summer advocated by Gen. Patraeus, US troop withdrawls will re-start in time for the election, leading McCain to claim that we are leaving in victory rather than after a humiliating defeat as would have happened had the chickens**t Democrats, including Barack Obama, had their way.

    5) For the coup de grace, about a month before the election the Michelle Obama “whitey” videotape will be released. White Democrats will then flock to McCain, a bona fide American hero, in droves on Election Day rather than see a couple of black militants (one covert, one overt) take over the White House.

It’s gonna be fun to watch. :-)

  • http://deleted AnninCA

    *blink*

It’s not important? Good gosh, if we don’t expect the president to have a grasp on foreign affairs, then how would we ever hold him accountable for decisions?

It means he’s unprepared to be Commander in Chief.

  • Dan R.

Oh, and for the several of you who are apparently too dense to figure this out for yourselves, the military typically gets the great majority of its interpreters from among the local population. So, the supply of available translators in Afghanistan is almost totally independent from the supply of available translators in Iraq.

Barack Obama is a naive lightweight. God help us if he actually becomes president (which he won’t).

  • Dan R.

Another point in reference to John McCain’s supposed “gaffes”: Iran IS, in fact, arming both shiite militias AND sunni extremists in Iraq.

Normally, the shiites in Iran wouldn’t give sunnis anywhere so much as a bucket of warm spit. But in this case “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

The Iranian clerics’ worst nightmare is the establishment of a successful western-style democracy next door in Iraq. They know full well that if the “new” Iraq takes root, their days are numbered. Already they’re starting to see tithes from the faithful go more and more to Ayatollah Al-Sistani in An-Najaf in Iraq and away from the mullahs in Qom, Iran.

So, in an attempt to prevent thsi from happening, they are funding and arming BOTH shiite and sunni extremists in Iraq.

    McCain was, and is, right.

  • Jason
