Celebrating a Nurturing Nature [update] **OPEN THREAD**

Okay. I just had to share another video. When I think about it makes sense. They share the same habitat, so it why not be companionable about it. Still, I’ve never heard of a duck that feeds one fish, let alone multiple hungry, bigger than the duck sized fish.

This video is from last year, but I love it because it gives me hope about us humans. It shows, that regardless of species, the need to nurture is stronger than almost any other instinct.

h/t BGD for the great video from Steve Hartman and CBS news!

And, since we happen to be between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it seems an appropriate time to celebrate the nurturers of this world. The special people, with or without children of their own, who play an active role in the caring, feeding, protecting, supporting, encouraging, developing, training and educating others in our society.

Whether your actions are as a friend, mentor, family member, professional, neighbor, business owner, manager, teacher, activist, co-worker, or volunteer, whether the recipient is a family member, friend, student, patient, neighbor, employee, stranger, community or the world, and regardless of whether your efforts are monetary, physical, emotional, or spiritual –

I celebrate you.

And I give you thanks.

You make this a better world.

Dammit! That made me cry! What a beautiful, beautiful story!! Thank you!

My brother has a T-shirt that reads: The more I know of people the more I love my dog.

  • Portia Elizabeth

Since this is an open thread, I meant to add: Has anyone else seen the pic of MO on the front page of the Drudge Report? I can’t believe she actually wore that outfit out in public in London! What was she thinking? What really got on my last nerve was the fawning by the reporter who spoke so glowingly of MO’s “slim waist” and “fashion-forward” sense of style.

    EGADS!!!

  • Ani

    Linda,

Thank you so much for this beautiful story — it gives me hope, too. Also how wonderful for this news team to take a moment to broadcast a human interest story rather than which celebrity gained or lost ten pounds.

  • HARP

    Looks like a wedding cake.

  • pm317

I thought it was an apron.

  • Obama: Dubya 2 Electric Boogaloo

LOL! I can’t believe she wore that either.

Ok, Im just some straight white guy who likes baseball and rock and roll, but that get up is hillarious. She looks like a clown from the Ringling Brothers Circus.

Those horizontal things make her waistline and hips look huge (and probably her ass too). I was always told that verticle lines give a more sliming look.

  • Linda Anselmi

Thank you Ani. I totally agree. Even for a “feel good” piece, this has more thoughtful commentary than most serious news segments these days.

The kittens are fine I’m sure if adopted they have the potential to be fime house cats. However as far as the baby baboon part it is hardly something to feel good about. Take a good look at the baby baboon’s face in the first sceen, it just watched its mother being killed in what was hardly a peaseful event. Plus for the moment it maybe “youtube cute” there can be no happy ending here. Baby baboons need years of mother baboon learning and a lepord cant’t do that. I’ll just fantisize the maybe when the lepord left whoever took the video then took the baby to some wild animal baby shelter. Try this

  • http://www.dwarfhamster.com dst

Sorry forgot to spell check and it shows: (leopard)

  • Linda Anselmi

Nature isn’t pretty a lot of the time. For the leopard its survival to kill baboons for food. Not sport or entertainment. So it’s pretty amazing for the leopard to put aside food and survival in order to “mother” an easy meal ticket.

  • pm317

Oh, No! She can’t wear a coat in chilly London and hide the wedding cake!!

  • MrMike

    Bun in the oven?

  • Portia Elizabeth

It really does make you wonder about how animals develop nurturing feelings. And I wonder if the leopard felt guilt/responsibility for the baby. (Or am I just anthropomorphizing?)

  • Peggy Sue

What a sweet vid, Linda. Thank you for that. It’s refreshing to have an upbeat piece from time to time.

God knows, we need some good news and good cheer. And a little tug on the heart strings isn’t bad either :0).

  • http://www.dwarfhamster.com dst

Linda, it’s not so much the reality of the event as much as cute’inazation of the event. It bothers me the same way all Disney animal features of the last 20-30 years do, where animals take on human voices (of famous actors and actresses) and motives as apposed to they’re 50′s and 60′s predecessors that were just good documentaries. There was one on Big Cat Diary a number of years ago where a mother lion started protecting a baby gazelle from the same situation. It worked fine till she got hungry and the rest of the pride did not see thing her way.

  • Linda Anselmi

Thats a very good point – especially when you consider that fewer fewer these days have ever been involved in the growing or raising of their own food. So they come to expect nature – and life – to be cute, benign, not messy and always finding a happy ending.

  • http://www.dwarfhamster.com dst

“Nature isn’t pretty a lot of the time.” So true, as “the road to heaven leads straight down to hell”. All this brings to mind this music video, its as positive and good feeling as I can imagine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00g8jh4RQzk&feature=channel_page . The sad part, the singer and incredible guitarist Stuart Adamson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Acj_zKWZs&feature=channel_page was found self hung in a Honolulu hotel in 2001 (Marital Problems). It’s amazing how many fans including me still miss him.

  • Animal Control

Studies done by Walter Gropius, an architect who founded The Bauhaus School of Design clearly showed that horizontal lines actually make things look slimmer. We, me inluded have bought in to the vertical line thing but it is an often repeated fallacy.

  • xax

When we got our puppy, our big Tom cat eventually took to her enough to groom her at night before bed.

That all stopped when they started beating each other up. They sleep together sometimes though.

  • Linda Anselmi

Sorry. Saw this comment about Michelle’s outfit at http://www.lucianne.com/ and couldn’t help passing it on…

    Linda Anselmi,

Thanks for this post–we all need some feel-good posts every now and then. My two big Iranian terrorist dogs (really rescue dogs from Iran that I picked up from Best Friends in Utah) barked through the entire video, however, so I had a hard time listening. They still haven’t learned to tell when the sound comes from a television or computer. :-)

It reminded me of the two years I worked in the Ed department of the Indianapolis Humane Society. Our dispatcher, who took the calls and sent the police officers out on cruelty cases, etc., was assigned the “bottle” duty since she could do that when phones weren’t ringing. We got lots of “abandoned” babies brought in. Often well-meaning people brought them in when they should have been left for a mother to return to the nest. We had many possums, raccoons, etc., and–yes–lots of kittens. Once at the shelter, though, we had to care for them. She spent lots of time with bottles and eye droppers feeding the little critters. But her main helper was Artie, a little nondescript mutt. He just loved to lick their little tummies after they had been fed and then cuddle with them as they grew.

So, you are right to mention Father’s Day–he was the best animal nurturer I met.

Every one should read Made for Each Other by Meg Daley Olmert. It explains the current findings regarding that whole nurture instinct. I believe it was advertised here at one point. It’s a great read.

GREAT NEWS!!!! Ron Paul’s “Audit the Fed” bill, HR 1207, has reached 222 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives!! A majority is 218, so if this bill can be moved through committee and onto the floor for a vote, it is guaranteed to pass!!

    Here’s the press release: http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/tx14_paul/audit.shtml

The Senate will be a more difficult obstacle since so many senators are heavily influenced by the banking lobby.

Transparency of the Federal Reserve (a consortium of privately held banks that makes public policy regarding YOUR money) is a first step towards REAL change.

  • Linda Anselmi

Thanks for sharing the news Sonic NK! Of course the media will help the senate by not ignoring it or down playing it as best they can.

Sonic, I will call my reps on it…

Just so I can clear my tool bar or what Mr. Johnson calls his spleen,

    Hey Ed Schultz…ya think?

Now the President is asking for town hall meetings and a grass roots effort across the country to force change. Excuse me Mr. President. We already did that.

Progressives should take notice of the silence. Maybe the Democrats are no different than the Republicans.

    and…

Hey BO…small acts of justice go along way…which you have yet to demonstrate.. how fixing this one? Please?

When Greenhouse blew the whistle on noncompetitive multibillion-dollar contracts to Kellogg Brown & Root, then a Halliburton subsidiary, for work in Iraq’s oil fields, she thought she was following her oath of office.

But instead of being honored for doing her duty, Greenhouse, with two decades of government contracting experience, was drummed out of her position in 2005 as chief procurement officer for the Army Corps of Engineers, pushed from the Senior Executive Service and stripped of her security clearance after she refused to retire with grace.

Dog alerts local family to fire, dies in blaze

The five-year-old Great Pyrenees is credited with saving the lives of Moss and her son David, 19, by alerting them to an early morning fire at their Harney Street home in Piqua.

Smelling smoke and hearing the crackle of fire, mother and son fled the house around 6 a.m. with Jeter following. For an unknown reason, the 120-pound dog went back into the house and perished.

    Paws prints.

  • Linda Anselmi

How sad. Jester must have thought some one was still in the house.

And yet its up lifting too. Because is show the amazing strength of Jester’s nurturing nature to protect. Thanks for sharing it TWK!

I had a Walker hound who was very maternal, even after she was spayed. She loved the little newborn kittens, and would steal them from the cat, who would patiently retrieve them and put them back in her spot, and the dog would just keep on getting kittens. Poor little things were wet from hound drool and starting to look rather soggy. I got tired of watching the poor little soggy kittens getting all those travel miles, so I moved them, and Mom Cat, to the washing machine. They came out into a box on top of it when I did laundry. I had to keep a sharp eye out because the hound was tall, and might have tried to reach it. Then after wash was done, back into the washer they went. They stayed in there until the kittens’ eyes opened and they got active, and I could put them in a box on the floor again. At that point, she started lactating.. yup.. real milk. Spayed dog. Go figure. I took her to the vet to make sure, just in case it wasn’t a coincidence and the “milk” was a symptom of something else. She was lactating, real milk. So the kittens had two milk bars for a while. And got very wet when washed by their hound mommy. It made for interesting times, though. Animals can be wonderfully strange sometimes. :D

  • Linda Anselmi

Wow FLDemFem! What an wonderful and amazing story.

Animals can be wonderfully strange sometimes.

    Sums it up perfectly.

    Thank you for sharing!

  • Onofre’s arm

Yes, it’s a sad commentary when brutish, instinct driven animals have more of an innate drive to nurture and protect the young and innocent of even different species, than many humans that have “chosen” to terminate the lives of their own offspring rather than be inconvenienced. Dogs are certainly more admirable in that respect.

  • Karma

Too cute. Thanks for sharing both videos.

My subject is the O and the Fed employees, who constitute a HUGE voting bloc.
I was talking to a DC FedEmp lately about the O, and how I’m not impressed, and mentioned the O’s campaign promises. He actually derided me for my belief in them: “Come ON, did you actually think he would close Gitmo on 1/21?”
So the conversation flip-flopped, from O’s duplicity to my naivete.
I’m STILL generous enough to think some “smart” people have any sense.
And I figured out that FedEmps support the guy who signs the checks: no brains, no matter the degree.
    They really are the sheeple.

  • candymarl

Wonderful vids. Reminds me of my mutt who loved to clean my black and white cat and her kitten.

I could always tell when he did because their fur would stick up wildly as if someone had used hair gel on them. It was hilarious and moving at the same time.
