Political Backtracking is Risky; In Diplomacy, It is Fatal

On the defensive for his willingness to meet global sponsors of terrorism, the Obama campaign sent out Obama and his surrogates to do damage control. Tom Daschle, Susan Rice and Bill Richardson made the rounds on the networks. Daschle worked the morning shift, Rice the day shift and Richardson the evening shift. Obama just dug some more. Let’s just hope none of these people ever get that 3:00 AM phone call.

ABC News reports on Obama’s backtracking:

The Obama campaign is now offering a more nuanced approach that would not necessarily include a presidential meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — and that stresses diplomatic work that would take place before any such meetings take place.

Asked about Obama’s original statement Tuesday morning on CNN, former Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., a top Obama adviser and supporter, said top-level meetings would not be immediate — and would not happen without preliminary extensive diplomatic work.

“I would not say that we would meet unconditionally,” said Daschle. “Of course, there are conditions that we [would] involve in preparation in getting ready for the diplomacy. … ‘Without precondition’ simply means we wouldn’t put obstacles in the way of discussing the differences between us. That’s really what they’re saying, what Barack is saying.”

Susan Rice, a top Obama foreign policy adviser, said Monday that Obama’s meetings with Iranian leaders might not include Ahmadinejad.

“He said he’d meet with the appropriate Iranian leaders. He hasn’t named who that leader will be,” Rice said on CNN. “It would be the appropriate Iranian leadership at the appropriate time — not necessarily Ahmadinejad.”

Really? The appropriate leaders? You mean like the Ayotollahs perhaps? Perhaps Iran’s spiritual leader instead, the Ayotollah Khomeini? Who is Rice kidding? The Ayotollah Khomeini may rule Iran but it is the President of Iran who runs the day-to-day government. Unless Obama becomes an Inam, the Ayotollah Khomeini is unlikely to meet him. And do Obama’s advisors think that in any meeting that does place between the President of the United States and the Government of Iran is somehow going to bypass Ahmadinejad? They are more out of touch than I thought. Perhaps no one will catch this, but this is another gaffe by Obama’s surrogates.

As per Daschle’s “of course, there are conditions.” You mean like the time and place? Or how much we have to bend over? Why anyone listens to Daschle is beyond me. He can’t win a Senate seat, so he pins all his hopes on Obama. What job does Daschle want? My guess is Chief of Staff in an Obama Administration. Let’s hope it is not Secretary of State.

Here’s the question and the answer from the the Citadel Debate in Charleston, South Carolina last July:

Q: Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea?

OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this: the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them–which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration–is ridiculous. Ronald Reagan constantly spoke to Soviet Union at a time when he called them an evil empire. He understood that we may not trust them and they may pose an extraordinary danger to this country, but we had the obligation to find areas where we can potentially move forward. And I think that it is a disgrace that we have not spoken to them.

Rice is parsing and backtracking for her boss. Why now is the question. It must be hurting his numbers. For nine months, Obama has held firm on this point. In recent campaign events, he continues to press his case. Even yesterday to Jake Tapper of ABC News, Obama said this:

“I have to say I completely disagree that people have been walking back from anything,” Obama said. “They may be correcting the characterizations or distortions of John McCain or others of what I said. What I said was I would meet with our adversaries, including Iran, including Venezuela, including Cuba, including North Korea, without preconditions, but that does not mean without preparation.”

So the surrogates spin while Obama digs his own political grave. And yet immediately thereafter he adds this:

“I think this obsession with Ahmadinejad is an example of us losing track of what’s important,” he said. “I would be willing to meet with Iranian leaders if we had done sufficient preparations for that meeting.

“Whether Ahmadinejad is the right person to meet with right now, we don’t even know how much power he is going to have a year from now,” he added. “He is not the most powerful person in Iran. And my expectation, obviously, would be to meet with those people who can actually make decisions in terms of actually having them stand down on nuclear weapons or stopping funding [of] Hamas or Hezbollah or meddling in the affairs of Iraq.”

The problem for Obama is that in the nomination process, Iraq was the focus and while that may be a focus in the general election, Iran and Venezuela are bound to come up more frequently. And McCain has the advantage because he has nine months of gaffes including his recent “Iran is a grave threat versus Iran doesn’t pose a serious threat” debate with himself.

And just as historical side note, Reagan did meet with the Soviets. He didn’t meet publically with Libyans nor the Iranians (well at least not after taking office). But probably just escaped you that back-channel diplomacy is a common practice. The Swiss handle our interests in Tehran for example. It is hard to believe that Obama actually sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Here’s what the Baltimore Sun has to say on the subject:

Good luck with that backfilling, senator. The problem for Obama here is that he probably erred by accepting the premise of the question from a voter at last July’s CNN/YouTube debate, that is, a meeting without preconditions in the first year.

Even people without foreign-policy credentials knew Obama’s answer would expose him to the very argument McCain is making now.

Obama had the misfortune of being asked the question first, which didn’t give him the time to play off the answer of one his fellow presidential contenders. If you reread the exchange, you can see that Clinton realized immediately that Obama had stepped in it and foreshadowed the McCain campaign.

Poor Obama, he had to answer the question first. He couldn’t parrot what seasoned foreign policy experts would said the answer Clinton gave:

CLINTON: I will not promise to meet with the leaders of these countries during my first year. I don’t want to be used for propaganda purposes. I don’t want to make a situation even worse. But I certainly agree that we need to get back to diplomacy.

And what’s more galling to me is that Obama continues to contend that when it comes to foreign policy he has the most expertise. That foreign affairs are his core competency. If so, then why is he in this mess with McCain pounding away and scoring points and perhaps knock out blows in May, five months before the election, amongst core constituencies that Obama has to win in order to have a chance such as the Jewish vote.

But the damage is done, in my view. Ahmadinejad and Chávez already know that if Obama is elected and Obama will talk to them then what reason do they have to modify their behaivour. Having not even secured the Democratic nomination, Senator Obama’s gaffes have already set back American foreign policy. And backtracking in politics is never really good, it is rather risky after all a gaffe is a gaffe but in diplomacy, bactracking is fatal.

  • Ellen Tenn

Obama has no idea what he is doing. At least we know McCain has real experience.

    • Andy

Obama has no idea at all. He is a pretender and his
off the cuff improvisations are dangerous.

  • alexei

Oh my, this is from the “One” who has “judgment” from Day One? Wow, if this doesn’t sway the SDs, then the Dems really are lemmings.

Clinton can’t Save Obama with an Obama / Clinton ticket.

The guy is Barack Hussein Rezko Wright tainted-caucuses Obama.
      Working class dems rejected him.

Here is why he should go for Clinton/Obama:

      1. It would give him time to build nationial credit that would overshadow his seedy past.

      2. He would learn something from Clinton

      3. Then 8 years from now, he could run with good credits.

Otherwise, he will be dead after this general election.

Somebody has to get through to DNC and Obama.

This is his ONLY way to the presidency.

      • Tom Plumb

Why would you want someone as corrupt as Obama in the Presidency?

      • Jeremiah “God Damn AmeriKKKA” Wright

The assumption here is the trouble with obama is his inexperience.

        I beg to disagree.

The problem goes much deeper than that.

The problem with Obama is he past and present associations and their clear anti amreican rhetoric and behavior.

8 years as vice president will only make him a more savey politician. He would still be a dangerous man for this country.

He is a Manchurian Candidate if there ever was one.

        He is the Political 9/11.

        • Ai1een

I totally, uneqivocally agree with “Jeremiah ‘God Damn AmeriKKKA’ Wright” (lol on that name) – Obama’s inexperience is the least of my worries, I think he is a DANGEROUS man. Look at every one of his nefarious assoications, ALL of them…ALL of them are either from the MIDDLE EAST or have developed some kind of affiliations with the MIDDLE EAST – and I’m not talking Israel either. Obama says he’s pro-Israel, why then does he surround himself with so many cronies who are profoundly anti-ISRAEL? Who is going to put Obama in the middle and show faces surrounding him and show with a literal line all of their Middle Eastern connections – all of them either terrorist associations or corrupt? Also in addition to that – show the truth about his corrupt “community organizing” experience (lawfirm he worked with was a front for slumlords), the way he unethically personally arranged it to have every candidate knocked off the ballot when he ran for the State Sentate, then the “stolen” legislation that Emil Jones Jr. made the other senators turn over so Obama could take credit – and the biggest lie of all – the Obama campaign’s race baiting that has gone on since after Hillary won New Hampshire. I think Obama’s got plenty of “experience” – in the art of corruption anyway, but he’s definitely been proving lately that he’s not nearly as bright as everyone had previously thought – that’s why he tanks during the debates – he’s too dependent on using prepared speeches or planned strategies by Axelrod, but when he has to go out and handle matters solo – he’s been making major errors.

      • Andy

I have my chips in HRC winning the nomination. But if the DNC keeps screwing her, I pray she is not sucked into a VP slot for the “good of the party” BS.

It will be a ticket with a puppet(BO) and a brain(HRC) but where the puppet screws the brain.

HRC should avoid being associated with Obama and his
        disgraceful ties.

Let Obama sink all by himself once and forever.

  • Shainzona

Charles or Larry…do you think there is anything to the recent post at “Stop Obama” that details a private meeting BO had with a supporter of Hezbollah and Iran when he was in Detroit recently.

Larry, Susan what do you make of this?

      Please comment !!

    • Charles Lemos

      Shainzona,

I believe that you are referring to a meeting with the Shi’ite cleric Imam Hassan Qazwini who lives in Dearborn, MI. The one concern about this meeting is that it is not public knowledge. Other than the Detroit Free Press, I haven’t seen coverage of that meeting anywhere else. That worrisome because what is Obama hiding. Again one of my chief complaints about Obama is that he tells different audiences different things and someone is bound to be disappointed at some point because you can’t balance such divergent political interests. Obama makes the argument that he is just listening to divergent viewpoints. That’s clearly not the case now because he is on the record on issues from energy to guns to Iran & Iraq to Chavez as having said very different things at different times. So who does one believe? What are Obama’s real views? It’s impossible to tell at times and that’s a problem in politics but it diplomacy it is fatal.

Clinton’s comments on Iran and the nuclear deterrence by contrast are clear and unequivocal. Iran knows point blank what will engender a US response. If Obama is elected President, Iran will test the limits because it can.

Clinton must win by big numbers in PR and if not win, make a good showing in SD and Montana. I believe she will take it to the convention. At this point the best way to continue to express our outrage at the DNC/Super delegates is to continue to support Hillary’s campaign.

Please, if at all possible, make a contribution today.

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think the next 2 state races will alter a darn thing, unless there’s unexpected shift.

So far, that’s not happened. Demographics equals outcome. Big Tent Democrat is right about that one.

So unless there is a shocker, nothing will change.

        • alexei

I hope not. If so, like I posted above – the Dems are true lemmings.

  • Tom Plumb

I believe Obama and co. are in the midst of a tantrum.

No matter what, you will not get your way, those tools simply lack the intellect.

    • bert

Even more than lacking intellect there is a sense of entitlement and a dumbing down of intellect.

There is also a good post today over at savage politics entitled Solidarity in Mediocrity that deals with this issue as it applies to Obama and his cult-like followers. It is worth the read.

      A short excerpt:

“We are living today in a society that devalues SKILL, ABILITY and INTELLIGENCE, in favor of MEDIOCRITY, EXCUSES, and WEAKNESS. A popular culture that teaches our youth that being LESS is somehow MORE. Thus, if a child is inherently lazy, he is not forced to advance, but instead he is excused and taught that he should SCREAM foul when anyone berates him for it.”

Interesting. That’s certainly the sense I’ve gotten from progressive blogs.

I tried hard to avoid saying that. That type of charge, even if earned, does nothing to further discourse.

But I became a bit concerned about the analytical skills.

However, my own Gen-X son writes a lot, and I get that “window peek.”

He’s a very smart fellow, with a decent educational foundation, and he absolutely makes no sense a lot of the time. LOL*

I love him, but he can be a pretzel brain at times.

Then I thought about my own evolution.

Don’t think I was much different, frankly.

So, I’m not going to throw the entire generational baby out with the bathwater. They will learn.

I am in total agreement with Hillary on this. It’s fabulous that people are engaged, even if I hate their opinions. I just think it’s wonderful to see people talking and exchanging ideas.

There simply cannot be anything wrong with this.

It’s crazy to think otherwise! I’d rather see us all wish the other side were dead than to see us not bothering to care.

        Apathy is the worst.

This is very exciting and promising.

        • alexei

If it was truly discourse, I would agree. However, it is vitriol, hate, sexism, misogyny, bullying, intimidation, lies and deceit. There is no back and forth on arguments; it is personal attacks and smears.

    That made me HOWL!

This man’s foreign policy is a nightmare. Many people do not have the time to investigate for themselves to realize what Obama is all about. When is the media going to wake up and get the accurate picture of this man to the public?

      • bert

The MSM media will wake up when the Republican slime machine and 527′s begin attacking Obama on these gaffes. Of course, the liberal MSM will cry ‘racism.’ But by then it will be too late.

First I’d like to know if Michelle Obama would let Barack go to Iran and other such places, after all, she even worries about him getting shot going to the gas station! Hmmmmm!

This is simply a ploy by the Obama campaign to shore up the latino votes! Obama is showing latino’s he can be a Mexican jumping bean!

Got to admire Axelrod in his ability to infomercial a useless piece of crap as well as he has, unfortunately, if someone actually paid for a piece of junk via an infomercial, they have a recourse, what recourse is there having a piece of crap sitting in the White House?

Oh yeah GWB is a prime example of the recourse!

  • K. Wynne

    Tom Plumb,

You’ve hit the nail on the head!

Obama was mentored and nurtured by the most corrupt political machine in the country — the Daley machine of Chicago.

There is absolutely no way anyone can rise at the meteoric speed in which Obama has while in Chicago without, first, selling his soul to Daley & Co. They decide who wins and who doesn’t.

Simply put, Obama has been groomed to be the front man for an untold number of power elites who could never run for office, but who want total control over anyone who does.

Why else would they have started the drum beat for Hillary to get out of the race right after Iowa? They knew the longer she stayed in, the more likely Obama would show his true colors.

That’s why Hillary’s quest to stay all the way to the Convention is so important. It’s her hail Mary pass in hopes to be able to expose this man for who he truly is — DANGEROUS for America.

    • Tom Plumb

I just don’t understand how a guy like Biden can support Obama, knowing how corrupt he is, period.

Biden is intelligent, what does he think will happen to the integrity of our government if someone even more obtuse than Cheney is allowed in the White House?

      • http://deleted AnninCa

He’d be as supportive if Hillary were the front-runner I think.

He’s just doing his job as an endorser.

but…..how embarassing to have to say that your chosen candidate “misspoke” and dig him out of the hole he put himself into.

Obama’s a suit. He’s not going to meet with anyone unless he’s told it’s OK by the leadership.

        He’s full of beans.

And what I’m focused on is the lack of true leadership in our party.

        They have failed completely.

So an empty suit who answers to them is the worst solution possible.

      • wac for hillary

I have never had much respect for Biden after his performance at the Clarence Thomas hearings. Remember his treatment of Anita Hill? When he speaks, I don’t listen.

          • wac for hillary

Let’s say he kissed Thomas’ ass while being very dismissive of Hill. He also did not allow other witnesses to testify who would have backed up what Hill was saying. He also allowed Arlen Specter to attack Hill’s character without any reservations; remember Biden was in charge of the hearing. What happened is beyond “oh ickola”.

          • alexei

He was more than rude, he was despicable. He and Specter. I would never vote for either of those two again. Plus, Biden is Mr. Visa/Mastercard – chief architect of the horrendous bankruptcy bill.

Great post. Clinton is going to win the nomination.
What she needs to do is stand clear and let Obama take the beating he most certainly deserves. Arrogance and ignorance are not a good mix, and if it takes McCain to take him out for it– fine with me. It should happen quite soon.

Preparation not preconditions. First of all Daschle’s line: “That’s really what they’re saying.
What Barack is saying.” Well which is it Daschle?
Are THEY saying it or is Barack? And who is THEY
ex senator (who got his backside handed to him on a plate by South Dakota)? We know Barack can’t think, but it really is sad that THEY are also incapable of thought.
Obama can’t handle himself in public. He has to be sheltered wherever he goes or he will talk off script and ruin everything for THEY.

His mistake was not in taking the question about preconditions, but about showing up at the debate in the first place. Presumably he did PREPARATIONS (ha)
for that debate, but not preconditions (and I seriously doubt that– I’m sure Obama had all the preconditions five assistants could handle). So there he is supposedly prepared and he can’t handle a simple question.

So, NO senator, you’d best not talk about meeting with anybody– because you can’t meet with the American people without taking a beating of your own infliction.

    • troll free zone

p.s. I wouldn’t call that a gaffe what he did in Oregon and Montana about the old switcher-oo with the Iran “threat.” I believe that’s called pandering what he did. • Charles Lemos

Your comment hits on few very important issues.

Obama is suffering from “the help I’ve fallen and can’t get up” syndrome and the “where’s the beef” syndrome. His answer to that question back in July 2007 in that CNN debate has plagued him ever since but in the primaries it hasn’t been that big an issue. It will be in the general election because McCain can use it to his advantage. He doing so now drawing Obama into a conversation that Obama thinks he wants to have but really should avoid.

McCain’s other avenue of attack will be “where’s the beef” or inexperince. This is clearly one of Obama’s biggest liabilities. And it has played a role in the primaries, Clinton consistently outpolls Obama on CiC but one has to understand that Obama’s base in the primary of AA + under 30 crowd + those who earn $100,000 or more + the anti-war crowd who blames Clinton has been sufficient in certain states for him to win. That coalition can’t win in November and the GOP will hammer away on Obama’s inexperience, his growing list of gaffes, and on values. I vote my values. If I voted my own economic self-interest I would have been voting GOP but I haven’t done that. My values don’t match up with Obama’s and that’s a problem for Obama because I would say half country votes only on their values and not on issues. And for a lot of people Obama is just another out of touch effete liberal, only worse because we have no idea what he actually believes.

    A bit OT :

Can some please expalin how delegates will be assigned in PR.

I heard at some point that when they changed from caucus to primary it was set as winner takes all; but then I read it will be proportional as the rest.

    Which one is it?

    • HARP

I thought it was winner take all too but fact checker says different.

      The Facts

Both Brooks and Barone are wrong. Puerto Ricans will vote according to much the same proportional representation rules that govern Democratic party primaries and caucuses in the 50 states. The notion of Puerto Rico being a “winner-take-all” jurisdiction stems from previous presidential primary contests, which were pretty much over by the time the Puerto Ricans got to vote. John Kerry swept Puerto Rico in 2004 just as Al Gore triumphed in 2000 because they were the only candidates left in the race, and the party bosses could manipulate the caucus process.

This time will be very different, according to several Puerto Rican Democratic leaders I contacted earlier today by phone. At present, Puerto Rico is scheduled to hold a caucus–not a primary–on June 7. If the race is still competitive, participation is likely to be very high, and there is no way that one candidate will sweep all the delegates.

“Both the candidates have supporters on the island,” said Eliseo Roques, vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Hispanic Caucus, and a prominent Puerto Rican politician who is neutral in the race. “You will see a closely contested race.”

The chairman of the Puerto Rican Democratic Party, Roberto Prats, told me that any registered Puerto Rican voter over the age of 18 who self-identifies with the Democratic party (i.e. does not take part in a Republican election) will be eligible to caucus. Like Roques, he expects excitement to be at fever pitch if the race is still going on, and hundreds of thousands of voters to turn out. Traditionally, he says, Puerto Rico has chosen to hold caucuses because they are “less expensive” than a primary, but the island may switch to a primary this time round, if the race is still competitive.

As a leading party official, Prats will go to the Democratic Party convention in Denver as one of seven Puerto Rican “superdelegates.” He tells me that he and two other Puerto Rican superdelegates have declared their support for Clinton. But that still leaves 59 other delegates (56 of whom will be elected under proportional representation rules) up for grabs. A summary of Puerto Rico’s election procedures is available here.

Both Brooks and Barone backed off the “winner takes all” talk when I caught up with them today. Barone said he had based his analysis on past elections, when Puerto Ricans traditionally plumped for one candidate. Brooks said he got his information from Barone.
      The Pinocchio Test

Given the way Hispanics have been voting in the U.S., Hillary Clinton probably does have a significant built-in advantage in Puerto Rico. But much will depend on local issues, how the two candidates conduct their campaign, and the attitude they take toward Puerto Rican statehood. No opinion polling has been conducted on the island, so it is difficult to judge the extent of Obama’s support.

Clinton could end up doing very well in Puerto Rico but even that is far from certain. Sorry guys, but the “winner take all” Puerto Rican primary is a myth.

      • HARP

Sorry, after more searching I find this. Maybe Larry could clear it up for us.

The 2008 Puerto Rico Democratic primary will take place on June 1, 2008. It will be an open primary.[1] Puerto Rico initially planned to hold caucuses, as was done in 2000 and 2004, on June 7, 2008. In December 2007, a typo in the plan was discovered; the caucus date should have read June 1, 2008. Puerto Rico also decided to conduct a primary, rather than caucuses.[2] Puerto Rico has 55 pledged delegates which will be alloted on a proportional basis and 8 unpledged “superdelegates”. Puerto Rico will select 1 Unpledged add-on delegate. Selection of the unpledged add-on delegate will occur at the Assembly of the Democratic Party of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico on June 21, 2008 in San Juan. As of April 30, 2008, 4 superdelegates had announced support for Sen. Hillary Clinton and 2 had announced support for Sen. Barack Obama. Polls will open from 8 AM to 3 PM, prevailing local time, Atlantic Standard Time (AST) (UTC-4, same as Eastern Daylight Time).[3][4]

        • Andy

I knew they had changed from caucus to primary and that this would be on June 1st.

The question remains as to whther it will be winner takes all or proportional allocation. I guess from your first comment it’ll be the latter?

Inexperience was my main problem with Obama right from the start. He’s only confirmed my worst suspicions with his inability to simply say: you know that statement about meeting with madmen without preconditions? I was wrong, dog. Instead he sends out the surrogates to dance around the statement and parse the damning quotes.

But add the inexperience, the arrogance, the refusal to admit mistakes to the Chicago diaries of deceit, corruption and far, far left ideology and I can’t see him winning an election as dog catcher.

It’s stunning. And scary. And I still feel heartsick because this is my party, the Dems, that has turned into something I barely recognize.

  • Mel

    Taken from RW:

During a campaign stop yesterday at a Boca Raton synagogue, Obama was asked about his association with Columbia University Professor Rashid Khalidi, who has made repeated statements supportive of Palestinian terror.

Obama replied: “You mentioned Rashid Khalidi, who’s a professor at Columbia. I do know him because I taught at the University of Chicago. And he is Palestinian. And I do know him and I have had conversations. He is not one of my advisors; he’s not one of my foreign policy people. His kids went to the Lab school where my kids go as well. He is a respected scholar, although he vehemently disagrees with a lot of Israel’s policy.”

Continued Obama: “To pluck out one person who I know and who I’ve had a conversation with who has very different views than 900 of my friends and then to suggest that somehow that shows that maybe I’m not sufficiently pro-Israel, I think, is a very problematic stand to take,” he said. “So we gotta be careful about guilt by association.”

First question, who are Obama’s 900 friends that no one knows about and he never talks about?

Second, pluck one person? How about Ayers, Dohrn, Davidson, Rezko, Wright, Davis, Jarrett, Daley and Said?

So there are more friends Mr. Transparency, 900 of them you say, listed above is 10, not so good friends, you mean there are 890 more of these types of characters……..geez!

“I taught at the University of Chicago”

I thought he was a guest lecturer there? At first he was a constitutional law professor. So what is he now?

And that other stuff is a treasure trove for bloggers. Great find! I expect to see some nice articles come from this.

Better call the troll brigade into action, they will be in full spin mode over this.

Obama has a close relationship with Rashid Khalidi even though he told the Jewish group yesterday that “he’s just a guy I know that lives in my neighborhood”. Sound Familiar? Khalidi is responsible for bringing Ahemdinajad to speak at Columbia University. Maybe Obama has already had conversations with Ahmedinajad via Khalidi?

    • hope

Well, he has with Hamas through his campaign officials.

    • TeakWoodKite

Maybe Obama has already had conversations with Ahmedinajad via Khalidi?

I read last year that during one of the trips to Iraq, BO was “in close proximity” to Iranian “diplomats” staying at the same “hotel”…

It was “suggested” by the author, that a meeting occurred between BO and Iranian officials…

After the these other connections and meetings have been “revealed” , BO is really stretching the “guilt by association” meme.

It is like the joke “How many BO associations does it take to…”

    HUBdate: The Popular Vote Leader

The Popular Vote Leader: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports about Tuesday night’s contests: “Hillary Clinton netted approximately 150,000 votes and is now poised to finish the primary season as the popular-vote leader. In some quaint circles, presumably, these things still matter…If you believe that the most important precept in democratic politics is to ‘count every vote,’ then…Clinton leads Obama by 71,301 votes.” Read more.

Hillary Strongest in Swing States: A Quinnipiac University poll out yesterday shows Hillary’s continued strength in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania…She leads Sen. McCain by 7 in both Florida and Ohio and by 13 in Pennsylvania. Read more.

Overriding Bush’s Farm Bill Veto: In a statement yesterday, Hillary said: “I was proud to stand with my Senate colleagues in overriding President Bush’s veto of the Farm Bill by a vote of 82 to 13. This bill is now law, and will move us further down the path to energy independence, provide a safety net for family farmers, enhance nutrition programs, require Country-of-Origin labeling, and improve access to broadband in rural communities…Senator McCain has made it clear that he agrees with President Bush on farm policy. Americans will have a real choice this fall – between a candidate who supports rural America and family farms and John McCain, who offers a continuation of President Bush’s failed policies.” Read more.

Why I’m Supporting Hillary: One New York farmer says, “My passion is ensuring that we have family farms for future generations and that American agriculture is strong. I know Hillary understands and supports that!…Like South Dakota, New York is home to family farms (about 34,000), and I KNOW she will make the best president for producers and rural South Dakotans alike.” Read more.

In Case You Missed It: A member of the Kansas City Star editorial board writes this to Hillary in a memo: “I have only two words to share with you about your valiant quest to become the 44th president of the United States and the first woman to hold the highest office in the land: Don’t quit.” Read more.

Previewing Today: Hillary attends a “Solutions for Securing South Dakota’s Future” conversation in Brandon, SD and a “Solutions for Securing South Dakota’s Future” town hall in Brookings, SD.

On Tap: Tomorrow, Hillary travels to Puerto Rico for island campaign events.

Don’t forget that when the bullets fly…kindly fall into the pit…
Rule # 23….FASCISM FOR DUMMIES…( or better known as What to expect if Obama is elected as POTUS )

  • tootsky

Rashid Khalidi is major thinker, a liberal/left realist, whose books are blurbed by the likes of Joseph Nye and Lawrence Eagleburger.

    You people are jokes.

    • http://www.hillaryc;inton.com **== President & Commader-in-Chief Hillary Clinton **==

A major thinker whom the 527′s will just love to meet I imagine.

      • tootsky

Just as Clinton will be rendered toxic by her connection with Larry Johnson (who I hear is on the outs with most of his old friends)….and his connections to Columbia and, like Charlie Black, lobbying for unsavory folks.

        • Strawberry

Why are you wasting your time here then? You would not be here,if you were not scared.

    • Mary

Rashid Khalidi is the same man who arranged for the leader of Iran to visit and give a speech/press conference at the U of Chicago.

Remember that speech? Khalidi made all the arrangements.

    • Charles Lemos

Rashid Khalidi also holds views that at odds with 60 years of American foreign policy. He would destroy the state of Israel. He even has a hard time saying the word “Israel”. He’ll say it if has to but he prefers using the word “Palestine” or “occupied Palestine”.

And furthermore the larger point is that Obama is obscuring this relationship as he does so many others because in order to win the Presidency, he has to jettison them. The Reverend Wright is a bigger issue overall but this issue will hurt Obama in the Jewish community and with the white working class. And then for people like myself, a progressive on social issues, Obama has another problem, a lack of trust. Because since I do pay attention to what he is saying, I am catching him saying different things to different audiences and that’s a problem for me.

      Charles Lemos

      • workingclass artist

Amen to that brother…That’s a problem for me too
        Obama is a fascist

  • tootsky

Further, for someone who was strongly critical – and rightly so – of Israel’s war crimes in 2006, Larry Johnson himself has a similar standpoint to Khalidi.

    • http://www.hillaryc;inton.com **== President & Commader-in-Chief Hillary Clinton **==

      Yawn.

    • hope

      totsky,
This issue is what Obama’s foreign policy views are.
He has associated himself with more than one enemy of Israel.

      • tootsky

        A) Khalidi is not an enemy of Israel. He’s a supporter of a real two state solution, like both Hillary and Obama.
        B) Larry Johnson is as critical of Israel as Khalidi.

I am getting the distinct impression that BO is stinking up the joint. Pepe la pew is smelling like “Calvin Klien” compared to BO!

The damage has been done , Naftagate, meeting with La Raza, Meeting with Hamas, Meeting with Hezbollah, having terrorist friends, and Middle East money.

The “perception” is reality based and not astroturfed.

    NO Thanks is being polite.

  • mariner

Why bother to ask Obama anything at all. he has time and time again proved he is a liar. Instead of people voting for this piece of crap that calls himself an American the American people should be calling for an investigation of this con man for National Security purposes.

  • Untilthelastdogdies

The problem for Obama here is that he probably erred by accepting the premise of the question from a voter at last July’s CNN/YouTube debate, that is, a meeting without preconditions in the first year.

I remember precisely when this question was posed to Mr. Rope-a-Hope, and, I made a mental note at the time…wrong answer buddy!

I also remember Hillary’s follow-up and, of course, she nailed it.

The scariest prospect is that apparently these same three surrogates will be the Go-To Team (unless he offers the top spot at State to Joe Biden).

Hillary, IMHO, wouldn’t need any of them. I do think she’d defer at times to Senator Biden, but she needs no hand-holding. We certainly can’t say the same for him now can we??

But seriously…..why does he do this behind closed doors……of course, everyone running for office meets with prominent religious leaders, of all faiths, as they should……but why does MR ALL INCLUSIVE do it behind closed doors??……just bizarre, and it goes against his message.

    http://www.chicagoagainstobama.com

    • Charles Lemos

Ray you hit the nail on the head. Why do it behind close doors? It’s bound to get out and thus cause more problems later. It’s bad poltics, frankly.

      • TeakWoodKite

Charles, if the content of the conversation was meant for “public” consumption, it would have been “out there”.

In one of Obama’s books he clearly states his allegiance to “the Muslims” if things get “ugly”.

Not the United States if things get “ugly”.

In any other post 9/11 scenario, BO would have made the FBI’s radar…He has been talking with folks that are not meant for the “typical” campaign season.

Of course the media did not challenge the Golden Boy last summer when he made this huge gaffe. Senator Clinton followed right away in pointing out Obama’s naivete – but the press got right on board and protected their chosen one.

It was a dumb blunder at the time and it is still a dumb blunder.

Does anyone think that Senator Clinton could take such a stupid stance and not be hounded by the press on it?

The media took us to debacle one, the war, now they are taking us to debacle two.

  • TeakWoodKite

Charles Lemos well done, sinks in well. The arch of it illuminates how incoherent Senator Obama is on many critical levels.
