Gaffe-Prone Obama: ‘Thank you everybody. It’s good to be in Sunshine!’

Excerpted from this blog: JammieWearingFool.
____________________________________

How many gaffes can a politician get away with?

Obviously none if you’re a Republican.

But Barack Obama can pretty much say anything and the media brushes it off.

Aren’t double standards wonderful?

SUNRISE, Fla. — At first, it seemed as if Barack Obama might just be speaking figuratively, as is his wont sometimes. “How’s it going, Sunshine? Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you everybody. It’s good to be in Sunshine!” Obama declared on taking the stage this afternoon for a rally at the BankAtlantic Arena in Broward County, Fla., just west of Ft. Lauderdale.

Obama, who often comments admiringly on the climate and regional aura of his various destinations, may simply have been evoking the warmth of the Sunshine State, which he campaigned in for the first time this week after staying away for months to observe the Democratic Party’s primary ban against the state. Or perhaps it was a term of endearment, similar to his recent (and later regretted) use of “sweetie” in speaking to a woman reporter.

But then he said it again, and again — “When we are unified sunshine, nobody can stop us!” — and it became clear: Obama thought he was in Sunshine, Fla. But he was not. He was in Sunrise, the name given to this particular swath of South Florida palm trees, bungalows and outlet stores.

If the 16,000 in attendance noticed, they didn’t make it known. There was no dropoff in applause as Obama experienced recently when he opened a speech in Sioux Falls, S.D. by declaring, “Thank you, Sioux City!” before realizing that he had named the Iowa city by mistake. Perhaps the crowd here also thought the “Sunshine” might be a figurative reference, or perhaps there is simply less local possessiveness when it comes to a Sun Belt exurb with vaguely defined borders and an even more vaguely defined identity, especially given that many of those in attendance came from elsewhere in the county.

The poor thing. Maybe he just had too much sun.

At four different points during the speech, Obama referred to the town as “Sunshine,” as opposed to “Sunrise.” Amazingly, the crowd of 16,000 played along and no one corrected him. Sunrise is a city in Broward County, possibly best known for its role in 2000 presidential election.

Good grief.

Let’s face it, the media doesn’t want to poke fun at him because they dread being called racist.

It is what it is, and what it is is a fawning press gives this guy a free pass. …

  • secularhumanizinevoluter

When you’re the precious there is no limit, cause you’re NEVER gonna get called on them by the corporate media till AFTER you get nominated. It’s almost worth hoping he actually GETS the nomination just to see the gobsmacked look on his stupid face when the worm turns on him and hands him his own bloody head. That and ms. dingdong, can you IMAGINE the look on HER puss! She already curdles milk at 50 paces behind a lead shield!

  • catriley

Obama is a one man Spinal Tap. Hello Cleveland!!

How in the hell do his supporters get past the fact that he is another George Bush? He doesn’t have the fortitude to keep his locations straight, how the HELL is he going to do the hardest job in the world?

Seriously.. he can’t produce papers from his time in State senate because his office was so messy he couldn’t find anything and had no filing system? His aides hand him things a minute before anything happens, or else he’ll lose them? He doesn’t know where the hell he is half the time? Doesn’t know how many states we have? He’s a lightweight, he is not ready to handle the job, and may never be. Some people, for all their fancy words, are not cut out for a job like that. (unless he’ll be JUST like Bush and have David Axelrove making all the decisions through a political filter.)

Oh.. and I just read that “Obama empathizess with Clinton on the RFK remark.” How fucking charitable. And almost believable if his campaign did not already send Olbermann’s insane rant against Hillary, to reporters today. And if Obama’s campaign hadn’t jumped on the remark immediately and condemed her yesterday. Beware the empty suit who is controlled by political hacks and shady billionaires. The question is.. who will be his Dick Cheney???

  • Mr X

Let’s face it, the media doesn’t want to poke fun at him because they dread being called racist.

This sums it up perfectly. Unfortunately, it’s given Obama a springboard to launch his campaign. I remember years ago when people thought FOX was only for conservatives. The truth is most news organisations will target whatever audience will get them the most money without controversy pointed back at themselves. With Obama, controversy will always be pointed back at the media if they go negative on him. Look at ABC’s debate for proof.

But if the GOP get their way, and Obama shows signs of weakness, the media will turn on him. Plus, FOX doesn’t have Obama’s audience anyways. They’re going to take the gloves off if he is the nominee. Up until now, their gameplan has only been to soften him up. No politician could get away with that many mistakes and survive politically. And he won’t. The same rules still apply. It’s simply a matter of WHEN. After August is the time.

How can we expect Obama to understand Florida when he and his operatives are actively disenfranchising them? And who are the idiots in Florida who support him? It reminds me of the wife who still adores her abusive husband.

  • Gary Ruppert

George W. Bush is clearly smarter than Barack Obama. Obama has never had an honest job in his life. He keeps getting by in life purely due to his skincolor.

That’s racism. Reverse racism is racism.

And now, he is on the verge of the Democratic nomination purely due to sexism by the elites and the media.

You don’t have to be a Democrat to see how wrong this is.

It’s not a coincidence that when the first major female candidate emerged, she got passed over for the job in favor of a less experienced candidate.

Barack Obama has to be one of the dumber SOBs in politics. The guy cites his experience at living in Indonesia as his biggest foreign policy experience.

  • Tom Plumb

I’m beginning to think Bush is more able for the Presidency than Obama, and that’s saying a lot.

Obama is a corrupt POS who should be headed for prison, as opposed to STEALING the nomination from Clinton.

    Disgusting.

  • Gary Ruppert

Perhaps smoking crack does cause gaffes. Obama would be an example of drug use obviously making one dumber.

  • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

Yes I understand this. This is because I have an IQ. She was pointing out primaries that ran till June. In otherwords, RFK didn’t clinch the nomination and it was June. What part of that don’t you get? Nevermind.

  • Gary Ruppert

Bush ran one of America’s biggest states for 6 years.

Obama has been a do-nothing junior Senator for 4 years.

Hillary Clinton is obviously more qualified, but she is being passed by due to her gender.

  • Beej

Wow! He changed Sunrise for Sunshine! What a terrible thing! We must repuduiate him immediately! How can he now be fit to be President?

Do you read your own posts? Try it sometime.

  • Gary Ruppert

A “community organizer” is not a job.

Obama was never a professor, but someone who got a job at a college due to being elected to office. Maybe Jesse Jackson did a shakedown on that school.

Obama became a state senator after getting all his opponents removed from the ballot, including incumbent Alice Palmer, who supports Hillary Clinton.

Obama was picked in the primary in 2004 due to the Cook County machine, and he won because the Illinois GOP refused to put up a legitimate candidate against him.

If Barack Obama was a white man named Barry Overbay, he wouldn’t have gotten anywhere.

  • IndayHill

It is DOUBLE STANDARD!!!For Obama, the networks are DEAF/MUTE/BLIND!Free pass to the incompetent one.
The money is the root of evil. My congressman, Congressman Dennis Cordoza, is another “Judas”, IMO, because, yesterday, he endorsed Obama, after several calls from Obama campaign. In the early start of the primary,he already gave his words of support to the MOST QUALIFIED, SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON.He ignored the will of the people of CA, who elected Hillary.I wonder WHAT made him change??
    Hillary, the next President!!

    Nooooooooo LMAO OMG!!

The fact of the matter is Democrat elites usually break towards candidates with experience over those without it.

    Gary Ruppert:

    Glad you brought this up!
Can you give me more info about what happened in SD.

I ask b/c the other day on Talk of the Nation they had McKeehan from Naral and the Emily’s list head.

And McKeehan said that Obama was the “only one” that worked with them in SD , raising money for them and writing “the” legislation to fight the anti-choice law in SD (???)

I have no recollection of Obama doing “so much” for Naral in SD.

As with most Obama trolls, you base your argument on a falsehood:

The point, as has been made here, is that, even if he’s held jobs that some might consider serious, and even if he’s performed well at them, it’s really all about skin color.

But he hasn’t performed well at anything. As Evelyn Pringle put it, Obama is

a guy who was picked up in college and carried up the political ladder by a corrupt gang of influence peddlers.

    http://www.opednews.com/articles/genera_none_080328_barck_obama___the_wi.htm

That’s why he can point to no accomplishments for any of those jobs, except the money and favors he procured for his patrons, like Rezko.

And his skin color has been an advantage to him this campaign. Hillary cannot breathe without being accused of being racist, while at the same time the most horribly sexist statements and behavior are being directed at her by Obama and his worshippers. She has chosen not to stoop to Obama’s level of dirty campaigning; but if she does not get the nomination, McCain will not be so kind.

Ferraro was absolutely right. A white guy with Obama’s lack of qualifications would have been out of this race after Iowa. But Obama chose to, with no justification, play the race card at every opportunity. What’s really sad is that his crying racism, when in fact he has lived a life of privilege, will have the effect of making it more difficult for real victims of racism. But I’m sure he cares about them about as much as he did the shivering people in Rezko’s buildings.

Perhaps your time could be spent more wisely by going out and trying to round up that 20 kazillion new AA voters Obama is going to have registered by this fall. You certainly aren’t gaining any votes here.

  • lute

God, if McCain had done that I could only imagine the shuffleboard jokes.

Hey, love this blog. Larry Johnson you are a great man. I am on the University of Iowa Democrats Executive Board, the leadership of the largest student org on Iowa’s largest campus. I also am the Prez of UI Chapter of Students for Hillary. I served on Hillary’s Hispanic Leadership Council for Iowa prior to the caucuses, and am definitely behind sites like this. I hope this site, Hillaryis44,and Taylor Marsh get more and more readership, most importantly by the Superdelegates. I cannot vote for Barack Obama, and this especially tough for me as a gay guy, but here’s why: At the caucus in Iowa City, which was Hillary’s toughest area in the state, we were unviable, and were 1 short after Biden’s people came to us. The Obama precinct captain came over to us and when we told her her cause was worthless, none of us budged, she flipped out and yelled “YOU’RE NOT EVEN VIABLE ANYWAYS!” She then called me a fag….and had to be restrained by her friends. Real democratic huh? This moment showed me where this campaign and his supporters stand on true progressive issues, they do not care, they want to win and don’t care how and who they hurt. I am finished with him. Anyways, keep up the good work everyone :)

You are absolutely correct there. Obama, his campaign and his suppoters do not care at all about true progressive issues. If you look at many of Obama’s positions they are neoliberal.

I am sorry you had to go through such an experience in your caucus. It must have been a horrible moment. Thank you for being there supporting HRC !!

I am in MA where fortunately we have primaries; I can’t phantom participating in a caucus. It’s a system based on bullying people into a vote.

I HIGH ADVISE YOU FOLKS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE “WALK A MILE IN OUR SHOES” CAMPAIGN

Basically, get a pair of old women’s shoes (any), put them in a box and send them to the DNC with a nasty note telling the DNC leadership to count the Fl/MI votes, make a strong statement about the rampant sexism that has been going on in the media/press and then tell them that you will NOT vote for the democratic ticket if Fl/Mi are not counted, seated and allowed to participate like any other delegation in the Denver convention.

You have to do before May 31. Please it won’t cost a you a thing, just $3.5 as shipping cost.

My wife just got rid of all her old shoes and we sent the DNC 12 boxes. Please do it.

I guess smoking and drug use are the new family values. They are certainly the values of Barack and Michelle in their Rezko mansion, a mansion purchased with corrupt money from sleazy characters. But let us not forget how they also force their children to attend a church where the pastor humps the altar and issues death threats to those who have exposed his inappropriate relationships with parishioners.

The Obama family has no values. OUT OF TOUCH.

I told myself yesterday, I would not say anything about his next gaffe, because of Hillary’s recent gaffe. A gaffe for a gaffe so to speak. I didn’t realize it would come so soon…

Maybe I will hold out for a more serious one, and still make fun of this one. haha

  • bigkitty

    I’d disagree.

Listen to his grasp of subject matter, listen to his word choice.

    He’s DUMB.

LOL! I LOVE this blog; I’m so glad I found it!

    Welcome aboard!

Make sure you check the bottom of your shoes when you leave just in case you stepped in troll poop.

    You guys be more positive!

  • http://www.hillaryclinton.com **== President & Commander-in-Chief Hillary Clinton **==

Who said Hillary made a gaffe? The MSM and trolls turned it into one in their minds. But they also support Obama. We assume the Obama campaign is behind the outrage about Hillary’s remark. But Obama himself accepted Hillary’s explanation. So where is the gaffe? And Hillary’s apology was for anyone who just in case they were offended. She did not intend to offend anyone and that editorial board issued a statement that defends Hillary 100%.

    Obama made a real gaffe.

  • http://www.hillaryclinton.com **== President & Commander-in-Chief Hillary Clinton **==

Obama seems to look worse that ever lately. This is one of the reasons I can’t see him making it to August to fight it out with Hillary for the nomination. I doubt he has the stamina. He can’t even debate his rival he is such a wuss. He just pretends he has the nomination. Meanwhile it looks excellent that Hillary makes it to the convention in a stron position to defeat Obama. There will be a couple more pushes to get her out of the race but this is nothing new. We and Hillary will jump right over those hurdles just like every other hurdle they throw at us.

This latest Obama gaffe is quite telling of his mental state.

Stay focused and positive for Hillary!

    Pony up or perish!

ROFLMAO!!! ~ These two comments are going to keep me giggling all day long… or at least until “Press The Meat” begins.

Being a Florida (Palm Beach County) resident, I was kind of surprised myself that the Broward County crowd in Sunrise hadn’t reacted more to his moronic mis-speak. Perhaps the “Hope-notic” spell he cast had them questioning whether the town had indeed been renamed?… as for me, I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for that new “Sunshine” exit off of I-95 !

I swear, you just can’t make this stuff up!

  • katmandu

I’m picturing Obama adopting a Yiddish accent and singing “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof. LOL

Hope everyone gets out and enjoys the sunshine today. I hear it’s going to be a sunny Tuesday in PR this week for Hillary.

Oh, I thought I’d pass this along. My Yahoo news feed sent me this link this morning: http://news.yahoo.com/s/uc/20080425/cm_uc_crlchx/op_205929 I don’t like Linda Chavez, though I agree with her on this issue. But the good news is that the MSM is finally starting to get the message out about Obama.

  • http://www.hillaryclinton.com **== President & Commander-in-Chief Hillary Clinton **==

But the good news is that the MSM is finally starting to get the message out about Obama.

Little bits here and there and its only a matter of time before the floodgates open. Obama’s demise as a candidate will be great for ratings. I think the MSM was hoping to do this in October but they will get over that.

  • Five Thirty

Re. the MSM giving Sen. Obama a free pass.

I think people are (perhaps subconsciously) much more dubious about the MSM than they have ever been in recent times. And well they should be. The MSM has not protected the mainstream newspaper-reading, tv-news-show watching populace from adjustable rate mortages, atrociously high gas prices, no federal $$ left to help people in emergencies, etc. etc.

Instead, the news crews sit chirpily at their desks, oh the stock market is down again folks (the near retirees *love* hearing that), gas is a record high, etc.

The only life and energy the MSM demonstrates is bashing a good woman like HRC, a woman who would do right by this country.

Hey, the adult mainstream populace (the ones who do not have Clinton Derangement Syndrome) don’t forget the $urplus that WJC left behind, money for everyone, until the GOP got their hands on it.

Ignore Fosbach, he just woke up alone for the roughly 10,000 Sunday in a row. He’s a little down.

  • John

If it was February instead of May, and if Obama was ahead in the popular vote instead of Hillary, and if the Superdelegates were going for Hillary instead of Obama, the Obamabots would agree with you.

Because they said as much three months ago. It was ALL about the Popular Vote back then. It was all about counting every vote. It was ALL about Superdelegates respecting the preference of their home state voters back then. And if they didn’t, they were Evil and Undemocratic and Donna Brazile was going to resign in disgust.

But that thinking is so February. Now it’s “the popular vote doesn’t matter” and “the Superdelegates must endorse the person who has the most pledged delegates.” Count every vote? Michigan and Florida broke “the rules” and they can go fuck themselves.

The Obamabot Principles, boiled down to one sentence: “Whatever It Takes.”

  • John

There’s a reason why we have a secret ballot in this country and have for over 100 years. Bullying, peer pressure, and just plain intimidation are fine for banana republics and faux-Democracies in South America and the former Communist bloc. They have no place in a real Representative Democracy like the United States is supposed to be.

Caucuses are discriminatory and totally un-American. Every time the DNC asks me for money, I reply that I will not donate another dime this year unless the Michigan and Florida delegations are seated AS ELECTED and BEFORE THE NOMINEE IS CHOSEN and I will not donate a dime after 2008 until the caucus system is banned.

  • John

Linda Douglas of National Public Radio (?) and POTUS 08 spends all winter covering the campaign, then quits to join the Obama efffort.

There are no ethics in journalism. Nothing Douglas said in the past several months about the Obama-Hillary contest can be taken seriously now. She’s been in the tank for Obama all along; the only difference is, now she’s being paid for it.

Tony Snow becoming Press Secretary to Bush was somewhat different, because Snow was a conservative radio yakker before going on to Faux News, and everyone knew his bias. George Stephanopolous taking over ABC’s “This Week” was a bad idea and damaged the credibility of journalism.

I know it’s a free country, but that means we are free to dismiss “journalists” who pretend to dispassionately cover political news and then jump to campaigns when money is waved in front of their faces. The media is as corrupt and partisan now as it was in the 19th century, when practically every newspaper was wholly owned and operated by a political party. The difference is, newspapers back then didn’t claim to be nonpartisan. I think I would have prefered to openness and honesty of the partisanship of those days.

  • Five Thirty

At one of the Texas caucauses, they would take voice votes, even though there were people in the audience voting who were not delegates.

I just watched this video where the Convention Chair, Ken Yarborough, admits that there were friends and relatives in the stands voting. It is amazing!

All the trolls look alike, I swear there is a archetype:”old troll,” “fat troll” “really dumb troll,” “troll with the mental development of a two year old” and so on.

    They SUCK, don’t they?

It’ s like going up against the backstreet boys, or Ted’s acapella band, from the TV show “Scrubs,”
all with an IQ of under 100.

Not too much here, at all.

  • mario

57 states, sunshine and lot more , how this man get degree ????? hi is so toast , Hillary 2008

  • bigkitty

No to mention dealing wiht terrorists, most importantly.

This morning, on ABC, they’ve already anointed Obama the winner, with the primary undecided yet.

They’re stealing another election, and it’s time to stop them.

  • Five Thirty

    ROOLZ? Donna? anyone?

  • bigkitty

You know, you have to speak to them in their language.

And it’s your decision whether to fight back, but all some people understand is the vulgar.

Not too bright, but they’re the kind of people who won’t stop with a word like f**, next, they disenfranchise votes, like Obama is doing.

So it isn’t enough to turn the other cheek, or not feed the trolls, quietly, in some cases, you have to use your judgement, and know when to fight.

    This is such a time.

And you should never defer to DUMB people, anyway, it’s unAmerican.

  • bigkitty

I don’t know, we’ve seen this before, same old same old.

But who knows, maybe the good Lord will smile, and Obama’s (and the Republican) scam will start tumbling down…

It’s not healthy for the country, in the end, not healthy for anyone.

WEll, off to McDonald’s for an iced coffee, I’ve heard they’re good, and their pancakes, the best.

Window help was so grumpy the other day, some middle aged white guy with a pre bald perm and another middle aged guy, fat, telling him what to do.

Times must be hard if the Hispanics (always friendly, always polite) are getting squeezed out of jobs at McDonalds, strange to see old white guys at the window.

  • HillaryMadamePresident

    Laughing so hard, I’m crying!

  • renegade

Did Obama say anything about staying in the race because Hillary might get assassinated by some red neck lezbo?

  • HillaryMadamePresident

Campaign against him. Elected officials should do as instructed by majority vote of their State. This “divvy up” Primary system will end up costing the most qualified person (Hillary) the election. For Goodness sake…who’s minding the store? Why have elected officials? Bill Clinton is right…if votes were counted the way Republicans do, Hillary would be the nominee.

  • mimi

I agree, but with Obama this is where we’re headed. He’s going to make Bush and his presidency seem great. We can’t let this guy get elected. No, he’s not Dan Quale stupid, but he’s not as smart as he thinks he is or as smart as his adoring sick-o-phants think either.

What he is is ‘half-ass slick!’

  • mimi

How about it’s the sum total of all the things that’s wrong with Obama. He’s made a lot of mindless gaffes of late:

    1. 57 states
    2. Great Lakes in Oregon
    3. Hanford
    4. Sioux City as in Iowa but he was in Sioux Falls South Dakota

Collectively, this indicates a lack of focus. They are unnecessary mental errors. For the undecided voter, this could be the ballgame. Given his present situation, he can’t afford to lose anyone. You guys need to stop telling yourselves that all Obama needs is your votes.

So how about you REREAD the posts and take your head out of Obama’s butt!

  • Anonym

On the subject of “errors”, has there been any blog here or any mention anywhere other than CNN’s Candy Crowley, that Obama claimed that he had visited 57 states in his campaign?

I am curious as to how someone who does not know how many states are in the US has any credibility in being president. He made a lot of fun of people who wear flag pins. But if he had worn one himself, he might know how many states there are by counting the number of stars on his pin. He could look down on his chest and count them if he “forgot”. Or he could look down at his fingers, count the number on one hand and multiply by the number on both hands.

Candy Crowley claimed Obama made the mistake because he was sleep deprived. I could go without sleep for a year and still not be able to forget the US has 50 states. The same CNN mocked Hillary Clinton for mistakes – but of all the stupid ones, thinking the US has 57 states, all of which Obama claims he visited, has to be the dumbest. I’m curious what he thinks he visited that are the 7 extra states.

Perhaps he’s thinking he’s going to annex Canada’s 10 provinces and make them 7 states. Any one know the answer? Or why the media doesn’t think this to be a serious error.

The man can’t count. It’s not surprising he doesn’t want anyone else to do so in Florida and Michigan.
