Is Obama Putting Our Soldiers at Risk?

A U.S. Army private was captured on 30 June in Afghanistan by suspected Taliban operatives. So what does this has to do with Obama? The story being put out in the media is different from what I’ve heard from knowledgeable sources. Here’s the media version:

I have heard that the soldier was captured while returning to quarters after standing post as a sentry. He was not out just wandering around with locals. He was grabbed from a remote, undermanned outpost. This one is on Obama. Why?

Our forces currently are shy 10,000 soldiers originally requested by General McKiernan, who was fired for having the audacity to challenge boy Barry for his refusal to approve the General’s request for more soldiers. As a result you have undermanned, thinly spread units deployed to remote areas without adequate Quick Reaction Force back up. What does that mean? If a large Taliban force manages to mass on one of these outposts the U.S. soldiers are a great risk of being overrun before help in the form of more troops, close air support or artillery can be called on to hold off attackers.

The troops are following their orders. But they are being asked to do nearly impossible missions with inadequate resources.

The Fox report had this disturbing tidbit:

Maulvi Sangin, who claims to speak for the Taliban in the province, said that the U.S. soldier was seized when he and the others were on their way to the Yousafkhel security checkpost, and took them to a secret location, according to an Afghan news Web site. Sangin claimed the abducted soldiers were drunk when captured by the Taliban.

U.S. officials could not confirm that these claims are true, and not Taliban propganda.

Based on prior experience, such as the ambush of the Navy SEAL patrol in June 2005 led by Marcus Luttrell (in which three men under his command were killed and a helicopter, with 18 would be rescuers was shot down), the Taliban are pretty accurate in their press releases on such events. If the soldier in question was intoxicated while returning from patrol that would raise a host of questions the military would, I imagine, prefer to keep quiet.

On the eve of Independence Day celebrations let us keep this soldier and his family in our thoughts and prayers. And let’s insist that Barack Obama stop second guessing on the ground troop commanders and give the soldiers what they need. If this soldier is killed by his captors then some of his blood is on the hands of Barack Obama. Obama declined to give the commander the forces he said he needed.

Well, an honest account would be that the president has increased troops levels in that region, that anyone who has family in the military knows, there just aren’t enough troops to go around until we finally fully get out of Iraq, and that this post is so disengenious, it’s unfortunate

    • Ferd Berfle

As one who has served and has a stepson who just got back from his second tour in Iraq, I don’t find the post disengenious [sic] but I do find your response ignorant and self-serving.

If you think so much of That One and the “job” he is doing, why don’t you volunteer to serve under him? In lieu of bothering people here with your pathetic drivel, you could perform a useful function. But then again, they want real men in the military and not trolls like you, Johnny. That leaves the alternative of you going and playing elsewhere as your adolescent blather and functional illiteracy are annoying.

      • IndieDogg

Don’t hold back, Fred. Kidding. You’re absolutely right. And right not to respond point by point but I can’t help but point out one of the idiotic statements “John” made.

Apparently, in his informed military opinion, NO troops can be assigned anywhere in the world until we “fully get out of Iraq.” That’s a new one on me. No troops can go to Afghanistan until ALL troops are out of Iraq.

I’m not sure if this is a math problem, a logistics problem, or a dumb ass problem but I suspect the latter.

Keep firing when ready, Ferd. Good job. As for John, please… take off the paper hat and the apron and clock out. Let somebody else cook the burgers. You need some quiet time.

      • Chicago Joe

John, Joseph, Francis, etc. All code names for “bot.”

      • TeakWoodKite

real men and women (gay or straight)

        • NoBamaNoWay

          thank you, TWK. :-)

      • James Guglielmino

Wow! It takes a REAL man (“man”) to attack a person for not being “manly enough” when he has offered a perfectly legitimate perspective. Does Larry Johnson have connections? Sure. Are they likely to be birds of a feather? Sure, they are. My own take on the reason for changing generals was that Obama wasn’t satisfied with the product. It isn’t an illogical argument to say that no general could have succeeded in Afghanistan given the circumstances that shrub Bush created but it also makes sense to start fresh and the guy picked, criticized by many liberals for his apparent connections to torture isn’t any wimp, for sure. John’s comment makes sense. We are going to lose soldiers in a war. To put that on Obama….well, that would be Larry Johnson and his admiration for “Barry.” To call it disingenuous is being kind.

      • raging

excellent points I was about to make myself with exception of this:
“they want real men in the military and not trolls like you”
sweetie, they take real WOMEN too, but John couldn’t fill either requirement. like his hero Obama, he needs a little help finding a local recruiting office. personally I had no trouble finding one.didn’t even need to stop for directions! happy Independence Day Ferd.

    • chitownmom

Wait… are you saying Obama can’t be held responsibile because he doesn’t have enough troops to deploy to Afghanistan?

That’s even worse. Because a CIC should not deploy troops when that’s the case.

    • Dawnelle

      wtf?

and YOU are GENUINE? pffft! worm bot thy name is LIAR!!

Larry, it falls on whomever is the current CIC.

THIS time it’s BARRY’s fault. Yep, yep. That buck stopped on top. As always. (whether they’ll admit it is another story)

Soldiers do their JOB 24/7 – ESpecially in the field. To dishonor them whether they were having a drink or not is pathetic & cowardly. They need to get THEIR BUTTS in that fox hole then…………… wussies. grrr.

  • SJ

Is it not Obama’s idea that these soldiers are to now mix with the community, I believe that is what I saw today on Fox.

The strangest thing is the media talks about all these new attacks on the Taliban, I hear how many Taliban got killed but I never know it there are any US casualties, even today with the chopper going down and 26 killed the media said it was not shot down it was due to a mechanical error.

Obama must really be the best commander in chief we ever had, we have no injuries, its not war its community outreach and every story coming in has an explanation so unlike the Bush years.

  • Slim Tyranny

    “boy Barry”?

    • NoBamaNoWay

      maybe he meant Barry boy.

  • connie

Obama is in no able to manage a war in Afganistan because he “stands with his muslim brothers”.

    • Slim Tyranny

      Gotta love those conspiracy theories.

      • tzada

The government of Kenya classified his father as an Arab. His mother was white. Look at his face. He looks Arab. The Muslim world even calls him “the Face”. So where does anyone feel that he is an African American? Where is that birth certificate?
        hmmmmmmmm

        • Slim Tyranny

Like I said, gotta love those conspiracy theories.

      • Dawnelle

        she was “quoting him”

didn’t you “SEE THE QUOTEMARKS YOU DUMBOT?”

is that what YOU read into his quoted remarks? conspiracy? WoW! Obambam is planning a conspiracy huh?

        • Slim Tyranny

Using fake quotes to imply that Obama isn’t acting correctly as US President equals conspiracy theory.

LJ, putting our brave Troops in harms way is criminal and totally unacceptable and is also something (while campaigning to become POTUS) PBHO said, HE WOULD NEVER DO.

If elected POTUS, Hillary Clinton absolutely would have made sure our troops had everything they needed. Unfortunately as SOS (under the thumb) of Obama there isn’t much she can do overtly but hopefully Hillary can use her outstanding diplomatic skills to secure the safe return of our soldier and the Afghan troops taken hostage as well.

This incident unfortunately is part of a much bigger issue and underscores the danger of an inexperienced and clearly incompetent Commander-in-Chief. Your excellent post spells the problem out clearly:

“Our forces currently are shy 10,000 soldiers originally requested by General Odierno, who was fired for having the audacity to challenge boy Barry for his refusal to approve the General’s request for more soldiers.

Thanks, LJ for the excellent post. God Bless Our Troops!!!

Special prayers for the safety of each and every one of our brave soldiers and especially for this young man taken hostage along with the Afghan soldiers who were with him; may they be returned alive and unharmed.

Also, on this 4th of July 2009, Thanks to all at NQ for the outstanding work done to educate and inform all who come here.

What are you talking about? Ray Odierno still has his job. McKiernan was replaced in favor of McChrystal.

    • allimom99

If you read the article, you’ll see that Larry references McKiernan. It is the commenter that makes the wrong reference. It will help you to read the article BEFORE jumping into the threads.

One US soldier -especially alive -is worth more than the usual “73 Taliban killed” headlines.

They only have to get a one here & another one there & Americans will be horrified.

The total number of Us/Nato trops is the same as the USSR’s numbers .Soon it will be equalyears also.

The proposed ?prescripted size of the necessary Afghan army/police needed would cost $5 billin per year.TotalAfghan tax collection is around $870 million.

That future that US has for Afghanistan willnot eventuate for a generation at best.

  • I’m a Linda too

Great post Larry. And that’s coming from someone who doesn’t think we should be at war in Afghanistan. It is only creating more enemies and hurting and costing more unneccessarily.

But, I do know, if Obama is going to be conducting “his right war“, he had better run it properly. And he isn’t.

Obama is again acting like Bush. The inexperienced playing leader thinking he can go to war with a small contingency so it doesn’t look as bad. While John McCain is becoming more the smart leader with his surge that he demanded long ago finally happening and that being the exact medicine Iraq needed to stop the surge in violence. I almost feel foolish on that one that I just parroted “no surge” because I was against the war.

Well Obama, this is your war. And being you want war, you are conducting it really stupidly and recklessly as only you would do.

Pull out and man up. Personally, you should pull out and use INTELLIGENCE to try to stop terrorism. You can not bomb your way out of this. But we see you don’t learn, so go ahead and kill, maim innocents while putting our men at greater risk for your “right war”.

  • goldengrahme

This topic is way over my rank except as a concerned citizen, mother, grandmom and grandaunt. My young
grandnephew signed up for the U.S. Marines and will
take up the responsibilities of protecting our shores–right out of highschool; he leaves next month to begin training. We couldn’t talk him out of it. I suppose he garnered some romantic vision via
TV or video games–where the good guys generally win.

That gives me a vested interest beyond mere dabbling
in chat. But I have done some homework online and
consider myself a pretty astute student of human nature and world history. My opinion is that his life will be put in the mix and if he fails to
return from Afghanistan (that’s an educated guess),
we can chalk it up to service to country. He is
an only child; his parents and extended family will not see it in those truncated terms.

It is Independence Day, 2009. Therefore, I feel
a moral obligation to post this very unsettling
link to a very disturbing video. The film is about
1:25 long. If the link will not come up, then
Google the tags: “Families for 9/11 Truth video at
Google.” You will see the first entry is accompanied by a picture of a red rose–the symbol of love and devotion. I think we owe that much to those we lost
on 9/11 and those who have fallen in its wake.

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3979568779414136481

The part that ties in with this thread comes up toward the end of the film; the U.S. gov and Pakistani security forces flew out hundreds of
Taliban and Osama Bin Laden insurgents just after
the Tora Bora battle to safe camps across the border.

Those men are now killing our troops in that war-torn area. Need I belabor the point?

  • smiley

In Journalism to spin the facts to make a point is called slanting. Most of the comments on what Larry has written sound like they are being made by students who are only in the classroom because they have to be, and not want to be. (With several exceptions. AND: I, too, truly dislike the punks who will say anything to defend Obama.) UNDERMANNED is not a concept that needs defining. Feet on the ground means having someone to ‘watch your back’. All this other static is just that. We are fighting a war. Period. That should be obvious. If we have troops in ‘harms way’ they should have support, material, and reserves for relief, and for those occasions when a ‘push’ or other tactical maneuver is used. Like many, though, I keep wondering what the overall strategy of this effort really is. Just to take potshots at the enemy and not wage ‘total war’ with the enemy seems an exercise in self-posturing, and delusion about the outcome. Winning, defined by controlling the country, would appear the better alternative to playing catch-up in a game where the Taliban, or whatever the enemy is called, turns the populace against us with agit-prop tactics. If we are trying to re-stage Viet Nam, letting politicians use the war for momentary political gains is a sure fire plan.

  • http://! stodgie

pretty soon even our pathetic excuse for a media will start reporting the the bad news about our soldiers from afghanistan. ole zero’s numbers will drop even more. how could anyone have thought with ole zero’s background that he would do anything but screw up.

  • memi

Obama’s campaign often called Bush a “WARMONGER” and everyone was happy to at last find in Obamama a man who was unafraid to stop the posturing internationally and go for peace, love, etc., and healtchare for everyone! Right?

Well, his budget deficit is 1.2 trillion dollars this year and his military defense budget takes up HALF of this budget at $655B. Why won’t he devote half the budget deficit to instaling a HealthCare plan COVERING EVERYONE rather than the corrupt insurance’s profits?

Why is Canada spending 3,400 dollars per capita and U.S. with no universal single-payer plan pays $6,710.00 and double the GDP percentage!? Obama lied about his war ambitions. He lied about everything. Biggest flip flopper to inhabit the White House–ever.

McCain and HIllary Clinton did NOT make the Afganistan war a key campaign promise! Now, Obama’s heading to a new VIETNAM IN AFGANISTAN!

This will be the Obama War of Disaster that will further bankrupt his presidency–morally and financially.

Palin was right: A community organizer was no ‘experience qualification’ for the top job. It can never be. He thought he could push HIllary off the stage like he did Alice Palmer. But he hasn’t. He’s only dug himself into his own grave of incompetence and cowardice.

    “This one is on Obama.”
    No way.
Obama is not responsible for anything; only Republicans.
Just ask your demcong buddies in the CIA, State, DOJ and the rest of the permanent parasitic ruling class that makes King George look like a democrat.

  • Barry 0351

I think the military has sensed the surrender in this administration and no longer care.
I think the lure of opium, Hash and easy alcohol has and will destroy the troops there like it did to the troops of the late Vietnam war.
I believe Obama knows but wishes a catastrophic defeat of US forces in Afganistan much like what happen in Vietnam.
The democrats hate the military and will destroy it in the field to score political points.
My view is we pull our troops out NOW before the disaster being planned for them actually occures.
