Texas, I agree completely that BHO does NOT fit into this circle of intellectual/spiritual heavyweights for all the reasons you mentioned.

I hear ya on this – I was SURPRISED to hear West say that, though, since he seemed to have supported Hillary earlier on. I guess it’s the same way John Lewis turned on Hillary once he switched to Obama. You know that NO ONE can have allegiance to anyone else, Clintons included, if they are to give proper homage to Obama.

But yeah – that pissed me off, too. Other than that, though…

SERENE JONES: I think one of the reasons that it happens is that we are living in a very overwhelming time. And it’s always going to be the case that a conservative familiar neo liberal agenda sounds safer.

Because it’s what we know. But the truth of the matter is what we know is what got us in trouble in the first place. So it’s one of those moments that everybody faces in their own life. We happen to be facing it structurally right now. Is everything collapses, what do we do? In the midst of that fear, do we grasp for what’s most familiar? That’s what’s happening. But the very thing you’re grasping for is the thing that got you there in the first place.

CORNEL WEST: Absolutely.

SERENE JONES: It takes a little opening of spirit and an opening of intellect and courage. It’s courage.

Can’t help it, when I think of COURAGE – I think of Hillary.

When I think of most politicians today they are either COWARDLY LIONs or SCARE CROWs. And like in the wizard of OZ they are in need of a heart or a brain – or both!!

Rev Amy, I’m not familiar with the term, “Social Gospel”, but I think I understand the concept. I respect the beliefs of sincere Christians and admire those who make a commitment to bring about social change.

However, too often, the commitment isn’t to feed the poor, oppose the violence of war or tolerance for the beliefs of others, but to shape society in a manner to impose their theology on all.

Religious leaders like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and others have attempted to influence the creation of laws in direct opposition to the intentions of the founders and the Constitution.

Mr West is making the assumption Obama is being unduly influenced by neo liberals and blaming them for the decisions he has made since taking office. GWB used the religious right to gain power and keep it and it’s not clear to me if it was to push the agenda of the neo conservatives or if was simply personal ambition.

Obama has made many decisions at odds with the left when it has been politically expedient. It may be naive to believe he will put the good of the country first or maybe I’m too cynical. I hope there are those in a position of influence who will have the courage, intellect and spirit to protect the country from the possible dangers, but we know it won’t be the media or the congress.

Well–this is very enlightening, thank you. This interview nails it on the head–let’s everyone know exactly how BHO hijacked the democratic party, used the race card and mesmerized the Serene Jones’ of this country. Jones and her ‘crisis of desire” puts the responsibility, not on Wall Street, not on the perverse, greedy INDIVIDUALS who chose to act that way but on us–the consumers, we’re to blame for this whole mess and yes “turbo capitalism” what??? These ivy leaguers need to come down to the real world-they have been walking with their noses up in the air so long(remember Gulliver’s Travels) they don’t have a clue about the 85% of Americans who are taking care of their families, trying to bring home a paycheck and are sending their sons and daughters to Iraq and Afghanistan. This crap is intellectual bs–

Thanks, R3Amy, for this topic. I’m all cool with the social justice, i.e., one person/one vote, count every vote, do away with any and all caucuses in this country, respect women in government and all strata of life, take legal campaign financing only, have every delegate from every state count and not dismiss two states in a corrupt twisting of the rules, investigate and prosecute election fraud, read and study and present to the people the full details of a $787Billion stimulus bill to read and study and respond before the Congress votes on it, stay home and do one’s jobs vs. spending millions traveling in campaign vs. governing mode, etc. Yep, I’m all for that social justice.

While I appreciate the highly evolved values of Serene Jones and others, bho does not belong in their circle. He is a spiritually bankrupt, woman hating, misogynist usurper puppet of Wall Street, banks and GE. It is social justice to tell the truth
about dangerous people. bho and his bunch have no social justice in them–they have infinite greed–for money and for power.

This is still free speech land, and I hope a lot more people comment on this post. Thanks again, Amy. We can count on you to help stretch our brains, even when we differ.

Bill Moyers, an ordained Baptist minister and a prominent member of the UCC for more than 40 years, who spoke at their annual convention in 2007, interviewed Rev. Wright on his show, in the midst of the primary controversy. I listened to the whole interview, and never once heard him ask on what basis Rev. Wright determined that simulating sex from the pulpit was an appropriate way to demonstrate disdain for President Clinton, whose wife was currently seeking the nomination against BO, the man he calls his son.

Cornell West finally admits why he supported BO. “And if this charismatic, brilliant, young, black brother can somehow get over the Clinton machine, he can become president. That’s why I supported him.” When asked, he lists as his first 2(two) concerns about a BO Presidency that people might assassinate him or his “precious” family; and that people will attack his performance because they are racist. (Luckily, neither implication deterred the next speaker, Gary Dorrien, who is white, from proclaiming, BO could be doing “way better” than he is.)

Speaking euphemistically, I propose that both of these men should go to hell. Of course, being a Jew, I believe in no such thing.
