Obama’s Foreign Policy Tragi-Comedy

Thanks to V for the video discussion.

Recent events surrounding some of Sen. Obama’s advisors, especially Greg Craig, have prompted many of us to take a closer look into what substance (in any) there might be to Obama’s pronouncements about his ‘transformational’ foreign policy initiatives. First, we should take a look at the advisors he listens to:

Anthony Lake | Susan Rice | Denis McDonough | John Brennan | Gregory Craig | Richard Danzig | Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration | Ben Rhodes | Gayle Smith | Amb. Jeffrey Bader | Mark Brzezinski | Zbigniew Brzezinski | Joseph Cirincione | Richard Clarke | Roger Cressey | Ivo Daalder | Philip Gordon | Lee Hamilton | Lawrence Korb | Daniel Kutzer | James Ludes | Robert Malley | Patrick Murphy | Samantha Power | Bruce Reidel | Sarah Sewell | Daniel Shapiro | Ted Sorenson | Mona Sutphen

Quite a list, isn’t it? The Obama Power Foreign Policy Team – Ready to Step Up to the Plate and Take Charge, on Day Two, presumably.

04obama6502.jpg

New York Times caption: CANDIDATE CABINET Foreign-policy advisers of Senator Obama (at head of table) include, from left around table, Gregory Craig, Susan Rice, Anthony Lake, Maj. Gen. Scott Gration and Samantha Power.

NOW let’s separate the wheat from the chaff. The important players here are with a thumbnail portrait of their several POVs:

Tony Lake and Susan Rice are veterans of Bill Clinton’s administration, known for their leftward leanings in debates.

Sarah Sewell helped write Gen. Petraeus’ new counterinsurgency field manual.

samantha.jpgSamantha “Hillary is a monster” Power is the firebrand Irish journalist who has made a name for herself attempting to ‘revolutionize US foreign policy.

craig.jpgGregory Craig is a top gunslinger, ‘trial’ lawyer who has defended, among others, Bill Clinton in the Impeachment trial in the US Senate, John Hinckley (Reagan would-be assassin), Elian Gonzalez (immigration dust-up that tanked Gore in Florida), Kofi Annan (UN corruption charges) and last but not least, notorious alleged murderer of US soldiers in Panama, Pedro Pinzon.

Richard Clarke is well known as the indefatigable Cassandra of the intelligence community

Robert Malley is a notorious Palestinian supporter whose middle east think tank: The International Crisis Group is dedicated to presenting the arab-african viewpoint brzezinski-large.jpgon the conflict, or more accurately the anti-Israel viewpoint.

Zbigniew Brzezinski is a legendary cold warrior whose roots in opposition to the Soviet empire are well documented.

The question is: What do these people have in common? How does it appear to affect Sen. Obama? and… who is running the puppet show here?

brzez-afghans.jpgBrzezinski, of course, is the Grand Old Man of this group, as National Security Advisor to Jimmy Carter, he has the oldest and closest experience of how to wield power in the real world, but his focus (not unlike Condi Rice) is purely on the battle of the superpowers, the adversary for him was, is and always will be: Russia. Not that he doesn’t understand that there is a ‘middle-east’, it’s just not important.

malley.jpgBob Malley is the known Palestinian POV for this group, while they all lean in the anti-Israeli direction, Malley is more of the “From the River to the Sea” radical. He argues for including Hamas and Hezbollah in whatever talks there are despite their oft-stated desire to drive the jews into the sea.

r-clarke.jpgDick Clarke I would view as a resource for intelligence and process. I spoke with him when he was on a Homeland Security tour, several years ago, talking to the technology crowd on cyber security risks. He struck me as a careful thinker, not given to speculation or magical thinking of any sort.

The coterie of Lake, Rice Sewell and Power are probably the inner group moist likely to have Obama’s ear on a regular basis. This is not to say that others (Brzezinski, for example) do not have agendas of their own but, given the tone an tenor of Obama’s few statements about foreign policy, this group seems to have sway at the moment.

The general direction of Obama’s Foreign Policy (OFP) is that of reaction to the perceived oppression of the Palestinians by the state of Israel. In the simplistic world of Obama-think there is no thread through the maze, there is no maze, in fact. Complex issues of peoples, rights and history assume a crystal-like clarity once you pare away the nuance and identify a victim and an oppressor.

It is the lack of historical knowledge that cripples the OFP. Certainly, the OFP is middle-east centric, despite the presence of Brzezinski, there is almost no acknowledgment of Russia’s new found power and wealth, of China’s continued surge in Asia, of the emergence of Venezuela and Brazil as new powers, nor the far-reaching ambitions of Iran in the Gulf region – other than their appearance as an opponent of Israel and supporter of Hezbollah.

Indeed, the entire OFP seems to be a rather simple-minded reaction to Bush administration policies: whatever they did, we’ll do the opposite. They went to war, so we’ll stop fighting – anyone. They won’t talk to their adversaries, so we will – with no preparation. They supported Israel, so we’ll support Hamas and Hezbollah. These are the policies of children. There is no grasp of the inherent complexities of dealing with real people and their very real agendas. Simply stating that “we’ll all sit down around a table and work things out” is delusional nonsense. It also exposes naiveté of a quite dangerous sort: assuming that those people across the table think and speak in the same metaphorical universe as you is an invitation to disaster in negotiation. The very thought of a President Obama sitting down with the various middle east constituencies, who have been dealing in the ‘Souk’ for four thousand years and expecting to connect because of his schoolboy days in Indonesia, is ludicrous. The Arabs will have him for breakfast …and then the Chinese will have him for lunch.

Obama’s limited and wrong-headed knowledge of geography, ethnology and politics is frightening to contemplate. To aver that the Afghans are lacking Arab translators isn’t a simple misstatement, it is a tacit confession that he lacks any understanding whatsoever of the actual situation on the ground in that part of the world. Afghans, Iranians, Iraqis – what-the-hell they all look alike.

Here’s the point: it isn’t enough to rope in some old guard cold warriors, hysterical firebrands, high powered, guns-for-hire lawyers and radical ideologues. Mushing them together doesn’t get you a viable worldview, a coherent strategy or a workable foreign policy. You, the leader, must have a deep and strong understanding of how the world works, who has a bone in which fight, what they might be willing to give up to get what they can live with. This doesn’t come from pre-digested think tank scenarios, cooked up by a random gathering of advisors.

Rather it comes from doing the cold dreary work of diplomacy, day after day, year after year. That way you gain -dare I say it? – the experience to understand both what you’re hearing …and not hearing; to be able to read between the lines; to detect and respond to a nuanced exchange of views. Working with community organizers on South Side Chicago just doesn’t cut it..

America needs to be able to talk to its adversaries and its friends, we need to be able to tell the difference. We have suffered a drastic drop in global esteem not because we are powerful – we are, not because we are arrogant – and we are that, too – but because we have been stupid for the last seven years and everyone in the world knows it. We cannot afford to be stupid anymore, we cannot afford child-like naiveté, we cannot afford to abandon old allies or to credulously acquire new ones. The Obama Foreign Policy offers all these flaws and more: Obama’s Foreign Policy offers up America to shame and humiliation, to retribution and retaliation. Obama offers to make America the chamberpot for all the ills, real or imagined, of every injured party, past or present, anywhere in the world. Simply put, Obama’s Foreign Policy can be summed up in two words: America Last.

                BECAUSE I love Gen. Clark

PLEEEEEZE Gen. Clark…if asked, tell BO to take his offer and shove it up his ass.

This would be another betrayal to Hillary. Obama is doing this to hurt her.

    • Andy

That’s b/c the word is out Saturday will be a charade.

The majority of the DNC R&B Committee has made up its mind a while ago.
Obama was told the DNC is doing his dirty work for him. CROOKS.

      • Five Thirty

They are crooks. That is why I personally no longer consider them as the official organization of the Democratic Party.

    • LOU

I just send in my DNC survey and their request for money. It contained a letter from Hillary. No NO NO I said No money if Hillary gets bamboozled. I said stop the abuse and if Hillary is the nominee I’ll work hard to get her elected President and contribute. No money otherwise I said in red ink.
And furthermore, I have not and will not change my party. As a Dem my voice speaks louder. This Obama vote cheating has got to stop. Obama won Oregon by 70,000 votes not counting the 31,250 double ballots send out to cross-overs by mistake. They are trying to fix it. So without the double ballots it could be a win of only 38,750 votes over Hillary. The Governor is a superdelegate for Hillary.
Just needed to clear this up. Perception about Obama popularity is way oevrblown. Hear that superD’s. Who’s going to riot? paid volunteers???

    • http://www.myspace.com/helenrose44 Pittsburgh4Hillary08

I heard that too and if she is like she has been in the past then I would iminage that but I also see her not ending at the convention I see her running 3rd party. I dont think the Democrats are going to ever treat her right so she and Bill should leave the party to self destruct with Obama and the other idiots who support him.

  • IronMan

Obama and his foreign policy team of idiots are a National Security threat to America. No way can I ever support Obama.

America has got to rise up and demand accountability from the DNC. Nominating Obama is a mistake we can’t afford to take. Hopefully the Superdelegates that claim they are for him now will come to their senses and vote for the one candidate that represents the will of the MAJORITY and that can win in November: Hillary Clinton

    • http://www.myspace.com/helenrose44 Pittsburgh4Hillary08

They are either being bullied or they are being paid off I have no trust of Democrats anymore I feel as though the Party doesnt care about us anymore . I am writting the superdelagates and I will stay with Hillary no matter what. I will never vote for such an stupid man who makes up his entire life.

This whole thing gets more depressing by the day. ABC news tonight made it sound like a far gone conclusion that BO will become the nominee. It seems like most everyone except the Clintons are saying so. And the MSM say the insiders in the Clinton campaign are saying that she has no chance. Even if it’s only propaganda, it’s what the public hears.

I can’t believe it. What friggin idiots. I honestly don’t see how anyone could vote for Obama. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. He’s an inexperienced fraud, a sexist pig and a lying opportunist.

If the SDs give it to Obama, I will work to help McCain win. I’ve been a Dem for almost 40 years and I truly believe that Obama will put our country in danger.

    • Ga6thDem

Well, they’ve been declaring her dead for months. What else is new?

Anyway, someone on another blog was talking about an emerging scandal from BO. Know what it is?

    • LOU

Maybe this will backfire again and get moe votes for Hillary in the next primaries. It has worked before.
Voter reality sets in and they vote Hillary.

  • jessie

On the computer today and looking around a few sites and found this and I totally agree:

    Here’s a question:

How do you think the majority of the media and political elites would react if Obama/Marxist’s friend William Ayers were firebombing black churches in the 1960′s?

If you don’t want to tie Obama/Marxist to his pastor, Wright, Cone, and Marx, then what’s with Ayres, and his college professors mentioned in his book that also is a admitted communist.(All of which he was drawn to – could it have been because of his father’s writings and his desire to be like him) He has no friends further to the right than Castro or Che. This is why he sees no problem with “talking” to Hugo Chavez. IMHO, there will be more come out about the laptop seized in Columbia with Obama/Marxist contacting FARC.

    Craig- great post- thanks.
I am known in my family for being the level headed one in a crisis- no panic- ever, for any reason- gets you nowhere. However, the whole idea of Obama in the White House with his screwy world view has got me on the edge of panic.
Your last line sums up my gut feeling about Obama’s intentions- “America Last.” And something tells me that’s the way he wants it- he has a core hatred of America, that whole black victim thing he was spoon fed by Wright and the Marxism he imbibed from Ayers.
    SHUDDER!
I keep reading and gathering information on blogs like this and by scanning the news available on the net. (Big thanks to Larry, Susan and the great authors here for being a well of truth and a gathering place for us.) I have made up my mind to fight tooth and nail to keep him out of the White House even if it means casting my first ever Republican vote and am busy as a bee educating as many others as I can about the true danger Obama and his masters pose to America. Why?
    Know thine enemy!

Thanks for this. I’m also known in my for keeping a very level head, looking at stuff without frills, and accurately figuring people out. From the moment this man started his bid, I’ve hard just this horrible gut feeling about him. Something did not seem right and that was before the Wright, Rezko or “Not proud of America” started to surface. I keep trying to tell people, do not elect this man. This country could be in grave danger. I just have this very bad feeling, when I look at him. I think he is an implant. Thanks.

Indeed, the entire OFP seems to be a rather simple-minded reaction to Bush administration policies: whatever they did, we’ll do the opposite.

The grandfather clock’s pendulum mode of Crazy Ivan Politics.

Joseph Cirincione and Richard Clarke are individuals who have been straight forward in what they have had to say. I am looking Forward to reading Mr. Clarke new book on why our government has failed us. I suspect it is not what Obama would have you think.

This “informal” collection of individuals is akin to Alice In Wonderland, Chapter One;Down the Rabbit Hole

Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end! ‘I wonder how many miles I’ve fallen by this time?’ she said aloud. ‘I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think–’ (for, you see, Alice had learnt several things of this sort in her lessons in the schoolroom, and though this was not a very good opportunity for showing off her knowledge, as there was no one to listen to her, still it was good practice to say it over) ‘–yes, that’s about the right distance — but then I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I’ve got to?’ (Alice had no idea what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice grand words to say.)

then we should nuke them I am sorry but anyone who messes with Isreal must be destroyed. We need to protect Isreal by any means necessary.

where’s the wheat? I see plenty of chaff. But I don’t see any wheat.

I thought Samantha Powers was on a permanent time out for not playing nice with others. Is she really skulking about again?

Yes, I can see this crack (ha) team running quite
a little confederacy of dunces. I’ve already read the book, I don’t need to see the movie.

    Obama: exit stage left. (curtain)
Richardson: look confused. Begin walking off stage right, then switch, walk off stage left. As Richardson leaves the stage some indistinguishable muttering should be heard… as though he is trying to shape words, but cannot.

(sorry had to throw Richardson in there if I was gonna write stage directions– his little choreographed moment I shall never forget)

  • suskin

This posts sums up what concerns me the most about a possible Obama Presidency. It’s not just Obama’s inexperience and lack of knowledge (however frightening that is), it’s the underlying fundamental belief that he and his followers – dare I call them neo-liberals – seem to share – that all the world, the middle east in particular, thinks as we do, and that if we lay down our weapons and hold out our hands and say – hey let’s work this out – our would be enemies will react as we would and lay down their weapons, take our hands and all the world will live happily ever after.

I suspect every single Obama supporter believes that, and that may be the number one reason they support him.

And it is so wrong. And so dangerous. Yes, hold out our hands to our enemies, say – let’s work this out – but the minute we lay down our weapons, we will empower them. They will see it as weakness. They will see it as opportunity. They will feel free to take actions that they otherwise would not have – like pursuing nuclear armament. Action that will necessarily require retaliation of some kind on our part. Showing weakness like Obama seems set on doing, is far more likely to bring about military conflict than any saber rattling McCain is doing

The hatred the Muslim world feels towards us dates back centuries. They don’t care if we want to make nice now. They’ll laugh at us and treat us like fools. The neo-liberals don’t get it. If countries like Iran get their hands on even one nuclear weapon, we will never be safe again. The relative peace that we as a nation have enjoyed will be over forever. We are a world facing the prospect of a nuclear holocaust and nothing is more likely to bring that about than the dangerous policies of an inexperience ill-informed and uneducated President Obama.

  • OxyCon

In 2000, America had a man who was as ready, prepared and able to be President as anyone could possibly be, and instead we got George W. Bush.

In 2008 America had a woman who was as ready, prepared and able to be President as anyone could possibly be, and instead we got Bwak Bwak Obama.

What a fucking shame for our nation.

    • Dawnelle

      (loud chuckle) bwak bwak? LOL!

  • Clinton Fan

Wow, what a crew. All the King’s horses and all the King’s men. With Humpty Dumpty at the helm.

    America LAST, indeed.

Bush has been too much of an asshole for far too long, but there’s no reason for us to put on the hairshirt and flog ourself in penance for what that asshole did. Far better that we throw his legacy to the wolves of the world, and let them tear it to shreds, whilst we get on with the business of America with a competent President at the helm.

And maybe we’ll stop being SEVENTIETH in the world in our ratio of female leaders, if we pick the right female leader to set the example.

  • jessie

I think the media out did itself when they failed to say that the 75,000 people at the rally (doubt it was that many) were mainly there to see a band – The Decembrists – very fitting band for Obama/Marxist. They did not say the name of the band (which usually opens their concerts with the Soviet Anthemn) guess they didn’t want the media to pick up on that so they just introduced them with their individual names.

If only the people out there would be able to see more of the real Obama/Marxist. How will this get out as the msm will not report it

    NO OBAMA/MARXIST
    NO WAY NEVER

I loved Geraldine on Greta tonight. Can’t believe I only watch FOX news now as I could never watch them before – guess if I can do that I can surely vote McCain in November if Hillary is not the nominee.

    • marek

The Decembrists – the name refers to a group of liberal officers who conspired to transform Tsarist Russia into a constitutional monarchy in the 1820′s – well before Marxism even existed, let alone the Bolshevik revolution of 1917

    • LOU

That little area of the waterfront only holds 35k max. It’s where the fireworks are held. People went to be part of history and see the band. Not to see Obama. The band is Indy/communistic style..imagine that.

I’ve been on the ground in 6 states and it’s not that the Jewish vote “prefers” Hillary, they will not vote for Obama. It’s not that he is aquainted with one man, Wright, who is anti-Semitic it is that he spent 20 years in a congregation that embraced anti-Semitism. As Jews become more familiar with this brain trust the Jewish vote will join the women’s vote and the latino vote and not vote Obama.

    Nominate Obama, Elect McCain

  • Ijane

George Bush Sr. got only 15% of the Jewish vote compared to Bill Clinton’s 78% thanks to James “fuck the Jews” Baker. Obama and all his pandering to the Jews won’t make up for his PLO foreign policy advisory committee. He’ll do about the same as George Bush Sr.

None of this matters though. Obama’s the DNC’s predetermined Presidential candidate. The DNC is as transparent as obama. When they chose Aug. 28 to be the last day of the Democratic convention, they thought they were being so clever. They thought America would love them for the symbolism they provided for such an historic event. Just think, their candidate, Barack Obama would get to bring the house down on Aug. 28, the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I had a dream” speech. They sure did put up a good fight to keep Hillary Clinton away from the nomination. The DNC wasn’t going to let Hillary ruin their plans for an August 28, 2008 Barack Obama/Martin Luther King I Had A Dream historic moment! The one thing they didn’t count on was Hillary putting up this much of a fight and especially not Hillary’s supporters. They had no idea that Hillary would still be leading the polls to this day with the American people. If the DNC and Obama steals the nomination, the only consolation will be watching them all enter the unemployment line after Obama loses what was supposed to be a sure win for the Democrats this November.

    H. fire/have enjoyed our recent emails. Glad to know you’re out there. Your quote above articulates what I could not. TO THE LETTER.

America Last with our miscreant overindulged spiritually malnourished youth see as a solution to the world’s problems. It’s the counterpart message to mobama’s scary speech in which she forewarned that “this change will be hard” because there is “only so much pie to go around” , so some of us “will have to give up our piece of the pie”.

Yep, she really said that. In public. Glenn Beck had a field day with it. Another conservative I wouldn’t before in my life have sat through. He pointed out that America coined the phrase “Making Money” in a true understanding of economics. While mobama would have us believe we must suffer to divvy up our American pie in tiny pieces to spread it around the globe. And wouldn’t that psychologically warped fury of a last lady just love to take out her rage on us all. Yep, America Last – it should be on Obama buttons and t-shirts.

What’s this about a new bo scandal brewing? Can’t wait? Who says? about what this time?

I was really disappointed with Richard Clarke’s decision to support/advise Obama. I have great respect for this man and his tenacity. Had Bill Clinton been in office in 2001, those warnings about Al Qaeda would not have fallen on deaf ears– Clinton famously gave Clarke a lot of freedom, unlike Bush, who barely paid attention to him. Seriously, Clarke may have demonstrated excellent foresight with respect to Al Qaeda, but wtf is up with jumping on the Obama bandwagon?

You can never win with some ppl i guess.

Now, everyone of Hillary’s supporters across US needs to contact these Obama superD’s in their home state and tell them that no one can make them lose their seat except the voters and we are prepared to do just that since we are the actual majority, unless the defectors who originally backed Hillary, go back to Hillary.

      • LOU

Give them a reason to go back to Hillary.

  • Catriley

God.. another empty suit with power-hungry people behind the scense, licking their chops, for their chance to control things. That Zbig guy scares the shit out of me. Is there a role already for Soros? And about those shadowy middle-eastern bankrollers..

Robert Malley. One of the two principal advisors to Bill Clinton on Israeli-Arab affairs (Special Assistant to the President for Arab-Israeli Affairs) along with Dennis Ross. Strong supporter of a two state solution based on the 1967 border, critic of Israeli policies in the occupied territories. Currently at ICG – a center left think tank. Subject to a smear campaign calling him a radical Arab Islamist (he’s actually Jewish) for his critiques of Israeli policies and support for a two state solution and outspoken criticism of Bush policies. Defended by a who’s who of senior Democratic officials (Martin Indyk, Dennis Ross, Sandy Berger, etc.) Was Clinton’s administration such a hotbed of radically pro-Islamist self-hating Jewish officials?

In general, the big split between the Obama and Clinton foreign policy teams is Iraq – most of the Democratic FP players who opposed it support Obama and vice versa. The internal debates back in 2002 and 2003 got pretty ugly and heated and the divide has remained.

  • LOU

    I knew this was coming.

Robert Malley is a notorious Palestinian supporter whose middle east think tank: The International Crisis Group is

dedicated to presenting the arab-african viewpoint on the conflict,

or more accurately the anti-Israel viewpoint.

One word comes to mind. Odinga

Hillary tells us help is on the way.
Obama tells Odinga on a phone call after Iowa caucus…
    help is on the way..

Go Hillary. Take this to the convention.

Obama Staffer’s Lobbying Work Runs Counter to Candidate’s Guidelines, Ethics Watchdogs Say

The co-director of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in Puerto Rico is a Washington-based federal lobbyist for the government of Puerto Rico.

Ethics watchdogs said that the high-profile role of Francisco J. Pavía appears to contradict the Obama campaign’s ethics guidelines, which forbid federal lobbyists from working on staff. But Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Pavía is an “active volunteer” — not a paid staffer — and can hold the job without running afoul of the campaign’s rules.

From Obama’s 2002 speech (the one for which the video is “lost”):

Good afternoon. Let me begin by saying that although this has been billed as an anti-war rally, I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances.

The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union, and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil. I don’t oppose all wars.

My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton’s army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain. …

First it’s his grandfather who only heard stories. Then it’s his uncle who was there, only there’s no uncle and no American was there. Now it’s his great-uncle and there is somewhere else.

    I’m confused.

    Obama’s foreign policy…America Last.

Yes. That does strike a chord with me for sure.

You would think that Obama’s Democratic Party patrons really want him to lose the election.

    Idiot, Ignorant, Incompetent and Arrogant

Obama is the GWB of the Dems. , the neo-dems.

the only saving grace for bush jr., He was America FIRST..

    Obama: America LAST.

      ssmith, you’ve nailed it.

Here we are, 8 miserable, alarming years, after having G.W. Bush installed as President; and now we’re having B.H. Obama installed as nominee.

Both men completely inexperienced on the world stage; both with puffed up resumes and no qualifications or accomplishments; both evince a sense of entitlement and arrogance; both have questionable histories of associations and involvement in questionable behaviors; both use religion as a sword to divide; both are inherently opportunistic, with no guiding principles save their own unassailable power.

      B.H. Obama = G.W. Bush

Craig, this is my first time reading one of your write-ups. I must say you’re remarkably short sighted and pessimistic. The “Conspiracy” movie with Mel Gibson comes to mind as I read you twisted words.

Your analysis of foreign policy is incredibly short sighted. Go climb under the rock where you came from.
