      I love Mel Brooks. To this day I will go up behind my husband when I catch him bent over and go, “It’s good to be the Queen!” It’s always good for a few threats from him and laughs for me. His threats don’t scare me, he should be thankful I don’t knock him down and pull him across the floor by the bone in his hair. ;) (Ooo that’s so aggressive! You have to excuse me I’m in a silly mood.)

    I loved Cat Ballou. I loved Lee Marvin struggling drunkenly to understand what was happening when the family was gathered in the dark around the father’s casket, the whole scene lit only by candles.
    Peering through his stupor at the candles he suddenly brightens and tries to lead the family in singing “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you”

      Ellen, this reminds me of another very funny scene. In Christmas Vacation, senile old Aunt Bethany is played by Mae Questel. At Christmas dinner, she is the oldest relative at the table, and Chevy Chase prevails upon her to “say grace.” Honored but flustered, she stands up, puts her hand over her heart, and begins “I pledge allegiance to the flag . . . ” The rest of the family, so as not to embarrass her, join in.

      Interestingly, Mae Questel was the voice of Olive Oyl in ’50s & 60s Popeye cartoons.

      Hubby and I just returned for a trip to Wyoming and Montana…..we visited the old Occidental Hotel in Buffalo, Wy., where Butch and Sundance had stayed. We got close to “Hole-in-the-Wall, too..It was a cool trip…..The Occidental hotel had a great restaurant and “saloon”, too. Buffalo was charming. And we thought alot about the movie,…..not realizing it’s been 40 years since we saw it in a theater! yikes!

    The movie “How Sweet It Is” with James Garner and Debbie Reynolds was released in 1968, a year after the Summer of Love. For its day, it was very funny. (Garry Marshall was one of the writers and Jimmy Webb did the music)
    A great funny scene from the film:
    James Garner plays a professional photographer . His college-age son comes to him and says that he’s dropping out of school. Garner asks him what he plans to do and the son says “I’m gonna become a hippie and go around the world and find peace and love”, to which Garner deadpans, “I’ve BEEN around the world. Take a gun.”

          I love Princess Bride also. I must have watched that movie 10 times when it first came out.

          I could do that. I have some rope up here, but I do not think you would accept my help, since I am only waiting around to kill you.
          That does put a damper on our relationship.

          We face each other as God intended. Sportsmanlike. No tricks, no weapons, skill against skill alone.
          You mean, you’ll put down your rock and I’ll put down my sword, and we’ll try and kill each other like civilized people?

          My fav:

          (This is a good one to tease teenagers with in their know it all stage.)

            Princess Bride was indeed wonderful. However, I will never be able to think of the movie again without thinking of Sean Penn’s appalling Oscar acceptance speech, during which his wife, Robin Wright Penn, beautiful Princess Buttercup herself, was sitting in the front row watching him. Danged, Sean acknowledged lots of folks, including that “elegant man” who was elected POTUS, and Mickey Rourke, who “is my brother,” but nary a nod towards Buttercup. And well, it goes downhill from there . . .

      elise, you know, Sterling Hayden’s “precious bodily fluids” speech in Dr. Strangelove came to my mind when I first saw this topic and was meandering through my memories. One of the top-10 alltime movies, IMHO. Great choice!

    Well of course ANYTHING from the Marx Brothers is quote worthy but I love this scene from Young Frankenstein when Gene Wilder goes into the jail cell where Peter Boyle is kept in an effort to start “rehabilitating” him. Gene Wilder tells everyone outside that no matter what happens or whatever he says do not open the door and let him out.

    “Let me out!! LET ME OUT OF HERE!! GET ME THE HELL OUTTA HERE!! What’s the MATTER with you people?! I was JOKING! Don’t you know a joke when you hear one? HA-HA-HA-HA. Jesus Christ, get me out of here!! OPEN THIS GODDAMN DOOR OR I’LL KICK YOUR ROTTEN HEADS IN!!! MOMMY!!!”

    Since Ryan O’Neal has been in the news lately, I thought I’d mention my most dreaded movie line: “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

    I was teaching ninth grade English when the movie starring O’Neal and Ali MscGraw came out. That meant reading gadzillion book reports every month. Erich Segal’s Love Story was read most by the girls. It got to the point that I had to overdose on coffee to grade those. (I also had to learn the little trick ways to catch when I was reading a movie report rather than a book report.)

    Can you imagine my glee when What’s Up, Doc? came out two years later. Barbra Streisand’s character says the line that time, and O’Neal’s gets to repond, “That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard.”

    The Bob Hope line in the first clip is priceless. And so true today. Nancy as a zombie, very possible, just look at her.

    My favorite line from the Candidate is the last one when Robert Redford looks at Peter Boyle after they have won the election and says “Now what do we do?”

    In the Blake Edwards movie Switch, JoBeth Williams plays Margo Brofman, a woman who has manipulated her way up the ladder of success. As she leaves a high-rise in NYC wearing an expensive mink coat, she is confronted by a crowd of fur protestors:

    Fur Protestor: Do you know how many poor animals they had to kill to make that coat?
    Margo Brofman: Do you know how many rich animals I had to fuck to get this coat?

    I guess I have more boorish, juvenile taste when it comes to humor. Aside from classier/non-profane comedies I love like It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, What’s Up, Doc?, Annie Hall, Sweet and Lowdown, The Burbs and Napoleon Dynamite (“BOW to your sen-sei!), etc., some of my favorite funny films are Animal House, Blazing Saddles, Office Space and The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There are so many funny lines in each of them.

    In Animal House, I never fail to LOL when Bluto says, “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?” or when the geekish Stork says, “Well what are we supposed to do, you moron?” The whole AA bar scene is a side-splitting riot.

    In Office Space when Peter thinks he’s headed for prison, I always laugh when his neighbor says, “Watch out for your cornhole, bud”.

      I LOVED Annie Hall – maybe because I am WASP with a Jewish husband it breaks me up when Woody Allen says he never thought he’d be with a woman who says “La-de-dah.”
      The scene at a WASP family dinner with Woody dressed in full Orthodox Jew costume is my husband’s favorite. Perhaps because when my parents first met my husband at a breakfast, my father peered curiously at a bagel and said “Is that Jewish food?”

        Oh Ellen, that Easter dinner at the Hall’s is a hoot! And I like when Annie says earlier, “You’re what Grammy Hall would call a real Jew” along with the terse “Thank you” reply. I also love when Woody says he “never showers with men of my gender”.

        And then the whole crazy brother Duane bedroom scene, as he’s confessing his suicidal thoughts to Woody who excuses himself saying, “I’m due back on planet Earth” is an absolute howl — especially when shortly thereafter Woody’s very nervously watching Duane drive like a bat out of Hell in the rain, on the way to the airport. That film certainly deserved its Oscar for Best Picture.

        In Manhattan, I like Woody’s expression at the very end when the teenaged girlfriend tells him he “should have a little faith in people” — the look on his face in response is priceless and speaks volumes!

        I guess either my sense of humor — or comedies — have devolved since those days, although Sweet and Lowdown was a later-career triumph for Woody. I laughed when Emmett said, “It’s my day off — I want a talking girl”, and when he says “Wanna go to the dump and shoot some rats?”. I love the soundtrack for that one too — absolutely great!

        A Carlyle Group executive is President Barack Obama’s choice to serve as U.S. ambassador to the European Union.

        William Kennard is expected to be nominated for the diplomatic post within the next several weeks, Bloomberg News reports. Kennard joined the private equity giant eight years ago to focus on telecommunications and media; he is expected to resign from the post after his nomination, which requires Senate approval, is publicly announced.

        Kennard, a lawyer, headed the Federal Communications Commission under former President Bill Clinton. He sits on the board of Sprint Nextel as an aside.

      That would seem very ironic, when many, myself included, seriously doubt whether the current occupant of the office could ever have qualified for a “secret”, much less a “top secret” clearance. But now he’s “The Decider” (now where did I hear that phrase before?)
