If you are referring to the Mt. Soledad cross on federal property in La Jolla, that is certainly not in the middle of a desert. It is in the middle of some of the most expensive residential real estate in the United States. My son lives near there. The cross can be seen from the highway and and is a landmark in the area.

Local people including me want it removed, not “someone from Oregon”. It is on federal property. We have separation of church and state here in the United States. Ever hear of that, you out there? Or maybe you would prefer a system like they have in Iran where religion trumps rule of law?

And the comment about nuking Oregon is one of the most bizarre comments I have ever seen on No Quarter, and that is saying something. I used to come here often because I like Larry Johnson and his support for Hillary Clinton. Some of you commenters have gone way off the deep end.

If Higgenbotham started working at Arlington in 1965 as a security guard, he must be getting old – or is quite old – by now, depending on his age when he was first hired. No matter, he sounds ancient in his thoughts, ideals, and tactics; I have this vision of his bony fingers clinging to relics past.

I think an early/forced retirement should be in Higgenbotham’s very near future: the man is a disgrace.

You are allowed to have a cross or a Star of David on your headstone in a National Cemetery. I believe they have relatively recently added another option for atheists. This is not in any way connected to the issue of crosses on Federal Property.

Thank you for confirmation. I remember when I was 8 years old in 1944 seeing the headlines in the NY Daily News about his plane going down in the Channel. It stunned me. I was very much into music right from the cradle and spent hours at our Victrola phonograph listening to all the big bands at that time. He, Artie Shaw and the Goodmans were special. I don’t care if it is just a marker, it is nevertheless something special American♠.

It would set a precedent. Cross on Federal property. Those markers have crosses, at least the ones I saw did.

I don’t know what that case would have to do with Arlington markers.

I’m somewhere between agnostic and atheist but I wish there were some kind of decent perspective on these kinds of cases. If it’s miles from nowhere and not bothering anyone, and not considered a precedent so that the desert becomes filled with crosses, what harm is it doing?

Use of the word ‘grave’ site instead of perhaps ‘memorial’ site should not diminish the concerns expressed in this article, especially because it is Arlington Memorial Cemetery for goodness sakes; Americans ought to have confidence that it is respectful of the memory of the nationally significant. There are likely many memorial sites where there are no remains. Sorry RRRAmy that this has drawn such scrutiny, excuse me?

I am very glad you qualified the older folks comment.
Many of us were brought up in a different era.

Thank you, Peggy Sue. It is sad – and like you, I have seen mementos at the Vietnam Memorial handled with reverence and respect. That should be the case at ALL memorials, not the least of which is Arlington

It does seem that Higginbotham has some, um, issues. My question is, how many good people, women in particular, are going to lose their jobs there before something changes??
