Obama’s Campaign of Threats to Superdelegates
Specter of Violence Raised to Drive Lemmings
A major fundraiser for the Obama campaign who conducts regular conference calls with his staff has been interrupting Hillary Clinton events for nearly two years. Her organization has joined with a radical group that is threatening massive, unspecified protest actions in Denver if Hillary seizes the nomination. Now, Obama’s official mouthpiece warns that he could deploy these forces even sooner with the click of a button.
For the first time, a paid staffer of the Obama campaign appeared inspired by the ominous language of shadowy pro-Obama protest groups like “Recreate ’68.” Spokesman David Plouffe told Politico the following on 5/28:
“We are not encouraging our people to gather and protest on Saturday,” he said. “With the click of a mouse it would be pretty easy for us in the Mid-Atlantic to gather thousands of people.”
While ironically accusing the Clinton campaign of “creating chaos,” Plouffe echoed the warnings by the Denver-based pro-Obama front group, Recreate ’68, to stage massive protests, if not riots, if Clinton somehow attains the nomination. Here’s the Politico again, reporting on the group:
Organizers said that, from a turnout standpoint, a victory by Hillary Rodham Clinton would be good for numbers — echoing sentiment on the right that Clinton is a boon to corralling outrage. “If Hillary gets the nomination, we’re going to have very large numbers — a solid 50,000 people at every event,” said organizer Glenn Spagnuolo, 37, who wasn’t yet born in 1968.
Notice the warning of thousands in the streets. This persistent theme in the rhetoric of Obama supporters is now part of the official campaign’s talking points.
Who is Spagnuolo? He appears to be a minor lefty protest figure serving as the Denver point man for a confederation of left-wing groups that have decided to cast their lot with Obama. This is what he said recently about Obama:
“Barack is the one who’s been giving out hope to young Democrats,” said Glenn Spagnuolo, a leader of the group Re-create 68. “If that gets taken away by the superdelegates for Hillary, there’s going to be a lot of frustrated people.

In fact, Code Pink’s website hosts an entire page highlighting the group’s interruptions and protests of Hillary Clinton events:
Code Pink has created another website dedicated to promoting the “bird-dogging” of Hillary that urges its members to interrupt her events and deliver talking points to the media that could just as easily be applied to their endorsee, Obama:
And now, Code Pink is planning to join the forces of Recreate ’68 in Denver:
Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink, said her organization will participate in the demonstrations in order to focus attention on Democrats it believes haven’t done enough to stop the war in Iraq. “We’ll use it as a time to pressure leaders like Nancy Pelosi, who we feel talks a lot about opposing the war but maneuvers Congress to make sure it gets funded,” she said.
Tom Hayden, a founder of a group called “Progressives for Obama” (read: lefty has-beens for Obama), confirmed the convention strategy of pro-Obama forces during a recent appearance on NPR:
“If there were the theft of a nomination, if that was the perception of the Obama supporters, then probably there would be a ‘68 scenario.”
Clearly Obama ’08 is using the threat of protests — and even riots — to intimidate superdelegates. The last thing superdelegates want is chaos at the convention, but creating chaos is the name of the Obama campaign’s game. Hillary’s media surrogates must highlight this disturbing and increasingly apparent element of Obama’s superdelegate strategy every chance they get.
