Our thanks to Martin Longman over at Booman Tribune. He performed a public service last night by disseminating Barack Obama talking points even before I had published my update. Two key points–First, the Obama campaign is admitting the tape exists by ponying up a bogus explanation. Second, they don’t dispute that Michelle is sitting at the table with Louis Farrakhan.

So, here’s what Martin posted:

My old friend, Larry Johnson, knows about manipulating elections from his training with the Central Intelligence Agency. He doesn’t want Obama to win the nomination for whatever reason, and he’s in full propaganda mode to do everything he can to frighten the superdelegates. He claims to have a shocking tape of Michelle Obama ranting in some anti-white diatribe. He promises to produce this tape tomorrow at 9am.

From what I understand, it is a tape of Michelle Obama criticizing the Bush administration.

How you’d write it:

Why did Bush cut folks off medicaid?
Why did Bush let New Orleans drown?
Why did Bush do nothing about Jena?
Why did Bush put us in Iraq for no reason?

How you’d say it:

Why’d he cut folks off medicaid?

How Larry Johnson wants you to hear it:

I’m going to be honest with you. Both SusanHu and Larry Johnson have been friends of mine. They have both done a lot for me and I am grateful and indebted to them. Any issues I’ve had with their activities in this election I have kept private. I haven’t visited their site in four months because I found it too personally painful to read what they were writing and I did not want to be tempted to respond. I thought I owed them that. But loyalty can only go so far. If they publish this allegation tomorrow, I will no longer speak with them. And I say that with great sorrow.

This election has ruined a lot of friendships. I have tried hard not to let it ruin mine. But smears of this type are unforgivable. I have been forebearing. Perhaps, in retrospect, I have been too forebearing. That’s all I say. This is too painful to me.

Martin, buddy. It ain’t a smear when it is true. I have made it clear all along that I do not have the tape but have spoken with good friends who know folks who have seen the tape. Martin, I have never, ever claimed to have the tape or stated that I was going to post same. I also have made it clear that the folks surrounding McCain want to keep this quiet until after August. So get your facts right Booman.

But you, Martin, now claim you have a transcript. How do I know? Because you quoted the transcript in detail. Terrific. Bring it out. Let’s put this to bed once and for all. Let’s show the world that Farrakhan and Michelle were exchanging Kool-Aid recipes.

I also find it fascinating that Martin is part of the Obama blog force. Me, I’m not on the Hillary mailing list. Don’t need it. Capable of thinking for myself. Martin, you got played by your boys. Transcript indeed!

The Booman got the heave ho from my bookmarks a long time ago. Guy is not a serious person as to his blogging. Like Kos, Bowers, Marshall, Jane, Digby, Jeralyn and others he was one of the pioneers of Left Blogistan.

I want to start my comment by saying i am a supporter of Hillary Clinton. I have been and I will remain one. Also i am African American. I feel strongly that Obama is not ready to be president and that Hillary is better prepared. I think all the evidence is there now to support the claim.. I’ve seen more than one post like this on the web – by Obama supporters. I definitely think Obama is aware of the tape.

I’ve known about this for a while because a good friend is covering Obama for one of the larger newspapers (I won’t divuge either) – but it isn’t just Obama whose been sitting on this (and other Farrakhan issues) – the media and the republicans are all hip to it. I’m sure it is one of the reasons that hillary refuses to go away. it is a bombshell. and it will do a great deal of damage to a very fragile democratic voting base for the big O.

I’m a diehard Hillary supporter and I want her to win as much as or more than anyone else. But reading these comments makes me sick. The blatant racism is sickening and makes me ashamed. I didn’t like the sexism aimed at her, and I don’t like the race-tinged remarks many on this site have aimed at him. I don’t think Hillary would want to be associated with these views. You can dislike Obama and oppose his candidacy without spewing such hatred. Otherwise, you’re no better than what you’re accusing Michelle Obama of.

And Larry, you really need a higher level of proof than a friend of a friend saw the tape. Give more details about what you know, and how you know it. Also, what proof do you have that Booman is reciting talking points, and that he got it from the Obama campaign? An earlier post by Student Guy at mydd.com had similar wording, but he posed it as his own prediction of what such a tape, if it existed, would show.

Larry, you can’t just make stuff up. If it came from Obama, be more specific. Otherwise, don’t say it. (And please monitor your comments; it reflects badly on Hillary.)

We used to criticize the other side for a lot of these tactics. We were the reality-based crowd, remember? Now we’re descending to the level of Freepers.

My desire for Hillary to win, and my distaste for Obama, make me hope the tape is real. But this is all very unseemly and Hannityesque. Strange how a transcript has emerged and the typed word as anyone knows holds little to the words being actually said from a persons lips and the context of them being said, along with the expression used in saying them!

Michelle, offering a speech critical of President Bush, offers a refrain of “why’d he” — the words “why did he” mushed together — that sounds like “whitey” on the tape.

Apparently, if the tape ever comes to light, her words will sound something like:

Whitey cut folks off Medicaid?
Whitey let New Orleans drown?
Whitey do nothing about Jena?
Whitey put us in Iraq for no reason?*

…when the intended message is,

Why’d he cut folks off Medicaid?
Why’d he let New Orleans drown?
Why’d he do nothing about Jena?
Why’d he put us in Iraq for no reason?

Or so we will be told. The irony is, if the latter interpretation is accurate, we still have a potential first lady accusing her husband’s predecessor of “letting” New Orleans drown.

UPDATE: Contemplating the rumor below, I wondered when and how Michelle Obama and Louis Farrkhan would appear on a panel together. Farrakhan doesn’t seem like the type to voluntarily share the stage. But then I noted that in late 2007, Trinity United gave Farrakhan its lifetime achievement award with a full ceremony — the video shown that evening is still on YouTube, with the feminine announcer declaring, “For his commitment to truth, education and leadership, we honor Minister Louis Farrakhan with the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. lifetime achievement award.” (Before you ask, the announcer is not Michelle Obama.) Is it possible the two are at the head table for a banquet? Is this the circumstance of Michelle Obama’s remarks?

ANOTHER UPDATE: Readers point out that whether this is a question (“Why’d he”) or a statement (“whitey”) should be fairly clear from the intonation of the sentence, if we ever get to hear the audio of the tape. The pitch usually increases for a question, and decreases for a statement.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: There’s another transcript floating around FreeRepublic and elsewhere that would make it hard to believe that this is a mispronunciation of “why’d he.” I have no idea where this alternative transcript comes from, and note that those who are posting it to various conservative chat rooms, etc., give no sense of where they heard it from.

An interesting point about the alternative explanation posted on Booman Tribune. Whoever felt the need to give that clarifying transcript to a liberal blog is, by that action, confirming that the tape exists.

FINAL UPDATE: I am now a skeptic that this tape exists, for reasons explained here.
