I don’t want to repost whole thing but I described my encounter with police drawing guns on me at a traffic stop (where we hadn’t committed any traffic offense) a couple days ago. (Obama: I don’t know anything about it, except the white cop acted stupidly).
I don’t automatically assume cops behave well.

In any event, I am far more concerned with the retention of my right to say what I want in my own home, than I am this asinine quarrel between the professor and the sergeant. Right now it’s verbal speech in one’s own home towards a police officer in question. What’s next? Our speech on the internet? Criticism of Obama?

The important thing is to cut through the fog and call each incident for what it is: real or bogus.

In this case, I think the evidence is clear. Except for deluded Obamatrons, who now [a point of interst] are backpedalling on the racial profiling and finger pointing that Crowley’s police report was inaccurate.

So, he’s no longer a racist, merely a liar.

(BTW, I’ve heard the term “hispanists” used to refer to scholars whose focus is the study of Spain (or anything having to do with Spanish language and culture).

This past March 29th, Professor Henry Louis Gates was being interviewed in front of a small group by Walter Isaacson on C-SPAN’s Book TV. Thirty-three minutes into the discussion about his new book on Lincoln, Professor Gates began a detailed account of his own genealogy. He said that in doing so he had discovered he was about “50% white”. He said that this was quote, “To my astonishment and horror…”.

He continued by saying that he had subsequently sent his DNA off to be tested. This time, upon finding out he was “57% white”, he said again, “to my horror …. I was becoming more white by the minute”. To this Gates, Isaacson and everyone else there chuckled.

Something tells me that if Mr. Isaacson had said that he also had sent his DNA off and found that to his “astonishment and horror” he was 57% black, no one would chuckle, least of all the Professor of African American Studies at Harvard, Dr. Gates.

However, Crowley had no choice but to accept the invitation or look like a sore ‘racial profiler’. I think the Cambridge committee announced yesterday to look into this matter as well as to come up with ways to avoid this situation in the future went a long way in defusing any attempts at a victory celebration the WH had in mind for Thursdays beerfest. Had the committee idea not been put in place, the WH would have sucked the blood out of this on WH turf.

I was very bothered by both of these incidents and unhappy with the outcome. I felt both officers should have been dismissed.

On the other hand, when someone who is doing his job and is wrongly accused of being racist, the negative and undeserved accusation can do as much damage to race relations in the country. Many of us have an intimate understanding of race baiting. Until 2008, I had never been called a racist in my life.

If we can stick to the facts as they are presently known, Gates was not dragged from his house and arrested. Gates followed the officer out to the lawn and continued to harange him. Why was Crowley’s mother introduced into the discussion and what words were used?

If Gates did indeed use threatening words against Crowley’s mother, why is the lack of respect for a woman Gates doesn’t even know insulting and yet no one is outraged over a threatened rape?

One thing is for sure. I am so thankful Crowley was the innocent professional. If he had said anything that could have remotely been interpreted as racial, we would be hearing these lessons from “The Great One” for months. Instead, he and his friend look like the fools they are, albeit, educated fools.

After listening to those tapes today there should be a lot of humiliated people, not the least should be Barack Obama and Prof Gates.
