This is not surprising, really.

Iraq is a majority Shiite country, and was only ruled by Saddam and the Sunnis because WE supported and supplied him as a counter-balance to Iran in the region.

By "democratic" standards, we allowed the minority to rule brutally over the majority for our own purposes. That's not democracy.

Iran and Iraq, without Saddam, are natural allies, given that both countries are majority Shiite. I suspect Maliki has been waiting a long time to remove the MEK, which we used to play the 2 nations against each other.

Well, there it is. Majority ruled.

Thanks LJ. I am curious about the entire Iraqi population as a whole (not the Iraqi leadership), are they inclined to accept Iranian influence, whether from the religious leaders or Ahmadinejad? Do most of them want independence from U.S. and Iran? Once America has withdrawn its troops what do you think will be the evolution of Iraq ten years later? I wonder what the Pentagon thinks about Col. Reese; I understand he originally posted these thoughts with a pseudonym. I reached the conclusion Col. Reese has a long, long time ago.

Iran has 9 oil refineries and 7 more are in the works for completion by 2013.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Iranian_Oil_Refining_and_Distribution_Company#New_Facilities

"Iran’s oil consumption was approximately 1.7 million bbl/d in 2007. Iran has limited refinery capacity for the production of light fuels, and consequently imports much of its gasoline supply [see Gasoline below]. Iranian domestic oil demand is mainly for gasoline and diesel. According to FACTS Global Energy, diesel consumption was roughly 550 thousand bbl/d in 2007, with nearly 90 percent produced domestically. Domestic demand for other oil products is declining as natural gas is further integrated into Iran’s energy consumption makeup. The Iranian government heavily subsidizes the price of refined oil products, increasing domestic demand. However, Iran is an overall net petroleum products exporter due to large exports of residual fuel oil.

Refining
Iran’s total refinery capacity in 2008 was about 1.5 million bbl/d, with its nine refineries operated by the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), a NIOC subsidiary. Iranian refineries are unable to keep pace with domestic demand, but Iran plans to increase refining capacity to around 3 million bbl/d by 2012. This increase, through expansions at existing refineries as well as planned grass-root refinery construction, could eliminate the need for imports by 2012. In addition, Iran has discussed joint ventures in Asia, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore to expand refining capacity."

TGIF all.

This offensive against the MEK has been a longtime thorn in Iran's side.

Part of Iran's limited assistance on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars were the repeated request by Iran to the Americans to do something about them.

The neo-con Stovepipe that saw using the MEK as a buffer are about all up and left. Iraq knows Iran has will make trouble for it after we leave.

The truly sad part is the center of gravity in Iraq is one of corruption and it will return there.

Thanks for the post Mr. Johnson.

I foolishly cheered when Saddam Hussein was captured. I've since come to understand the wisdom of those who counseled against invading Iraq and instead favored a policy of containment. Sometimes choices are between the lesser of two evils.

Too late now. What a mess.

This should come as no surprise. Our British friends "in the room" reported that up until one month before the invasion, President Bush did not know Iraq had Sunnis and Shiites. He thought they were just "all Muslims."

Absolutely no forethought went into this policy. It was based entirely on arrogance and ignorance.

The Washington Post is one of the few outlets that's covered this without snark. The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Independent and The Independent of London are all making little 'jokes' about the MEK. I find that outrageous and as outrageous as the attack on them.
I didn't expect that Code Stink and the other fakes would say a word. They lost interest in Iraq when Barack got in. Now Barack's allowing the MEK to be attacked by Nouri Maliki and who's going to call it out?
It's all disgusting and past time for all US forces to leave Iraq.
Thanks to Larry for getting the word out on the assault on Camp Ashraf.
