As an American citizen I was outraged at the abuses of photographed torture that made their way into our living rooms. But what has never been clear to me is who exactly was responsible for it, except Bush of course. I think that Panetta made a political decision to brush back Congress because there are things that wouldn't be to their benefit to expose. Like perhaps Nancy Pelosi is a big fat liar. Or the Democrats not only knew about most if not all of this stuff, they approved it. And maybe someone has evidence of that. So it's also protecting Obama. In short, Panetta is playing politics to make it seem as if he isn't. It's like when Obama says <em>Let me be clear</em>. You know that what follows is complete bullshit. Of course I am speculating and can't help but be the least bit cynical. On the other hand, I am not sure what real value there would be in publicly exposing this debacle. There are more stealth methods of handling matters and if Panetta has the evidence that some CIA person did something wrong he can always let him go. Or make him disappear.
