The New Culture War, part 1

After Hillary suspended her campaign and called on her supporters to back Obama, a dear friend and active supporter of Obama, sent me an article to read and asked me to tell her what I thought about it. My friend, a long time feminist, has contributed to women’s issues for decades and her support of Obama against Hillary has been a point of contention between us. In fact, a few months ago, we decided not to discuss the nomination fight.

The article she sent is written by Michelle Goldberg and published in the New Republic. Goldberg, a young journalist and author, has done interesting research on the previous culture war, that is, the war between the religious right and the secular left.

I know that when Obama supporters send me an article to read, they don’t really care what I think about it. Rather, they are hoping that I will question my own position and be persuaded to see things their way.

Goldberg’s article is interesting to me, but probably not in the way my friend hoped. It is interesting because she represents the new culture war, the war between the so-called “progressives,” that is, the neolibs of the Democratic Party who have lost touch with and disowned the “other” side of the party, what I will call the New Deal Democrats. She writes:

Hillary Clinton has lost the nomination, but some of her most ardent female backers seem unwilling to accept it. A strange narrative has developed, abetted by Clinton and some of the mainstream feminist organizations. In it, the will of the voters was thwarted by chauvinistic party leaders in concert with a servile media, and Obama’s victory represents a repeat of George W. Bush’s in 2000. It’s a story in which Obama becomes every arrogant young man who has ever edged out a more deserving middle-aged woman, and Clinton, hanging on until the bitter end, is not a spoiler but a feminist martyr.

Contrast Hillary losing the nomination in what Goldberg calls “a strange narrative” with Obama receiving the nod from the DNC in what J. Cifre calls a “comical farce.” In this quote, Cifre represents Hillary supporters, my side in this culture war, those of us who are being disowned by the party.

This entire election has been a sham. An almost comical farce in which the Mainstream Media, along with the ideological Left fringes within the Democratic Party have decided AHEAD OF TIME, who should become President of the United States. In this manner, and with full knowledge and intent, they have decided to re-write history, dismiss entire demographics, and besmirch the reputation of countless individuals, for the sake of political power and the ‘almighty dollar’. They have courted and laid with the ugly specter of sexism and anti-White racism, insulting the very same people who have literally fed them over the years, with their vast economic and moral support.

There is much to say about this new culture war which is dividing the Democratic Party. The analysis of this division is just beginning and will make for very interesting reading as it develops and especially sometime after the November election. The blogger Anglachel is in the forefront of this analysis and calls herself a Clinton Democrat. Addressing Obama supporters, she writes:

Something else you will have to accept if you want your candidate to have a prayer of winning in the fall is that we Clinton Democrats are legitimate and loyal members of this party. You sneer at us and make insulting claims about our voting preferences, like we are racists, or are simply voting for another woman, or are just voting name recognition, or that we’re “low information” (hey, drop the euphemisms and just call us dumb hicks, OK? We’ve heard it before…) with the condescending implication that, poor dears, we just don’t know what we’re doing.

Goldberg, Cifre and Anglachel probably have a lot in common: they appear to be well-educated, white, middle-class liberals. But Goldberg’s point of view differs from that of Anglachel and Cifre. As is common with Obama supporters, Goldberg doesn’t try to tell us why we should support her candidate; she doesn’t tell us what good he has done or what good he will do. Instead, Obama’s supporters tell us what we and our candidate have done wrong. To Goldberg, Hillary supporters see themselves as victims.

This conviction, that sexism cost Clinton the nomination, is likely to be one of the more toxic legacies of this primary season. It is leaving her supporters feeling not just disappointed but victimized, many convinced that Obama’s win is illegitimate.

Goldberg defends her candidate’s nomination by demeaning Clinton supporters, a tactic that Hillary’s supporters are tired of. We read it as “kool aid” dementia, the trashing of our candidate in lieu of the ability to describe the platform and policies of Obama. Cifre, on the other hand, represents the concerned forward thinking of the Hillary supporters who worry about Obama’s lack of credentials and inexperience, but more importantly, are dismayed at the corrupting influences in the Democratic Party that won Obama the nomination. Cifre writes:

The line has been drawn in the sand, and we are definitely staring into the heart of darkness that the radical left wing of the Democratic Party has in store for all of those who do not conform. They have already proven that their main objective is to bring a new era of anti-White racism, institutionalized sexism, self inflicted ignorance, reality-show messianic pretensions, and utter submission to corporate interests.

Throughout the primary, Hillary’s supporters were viciously attacked by the Obama campaign with name calling, misogyny and sexism. The Obama blogs relied on Clinton Derangement Syndrome instead of detailing the plans of their candidate. Those of us who supported and stand by Hillary continued to ask question about Obama and his policies, but instead of receiving answers, we were called racists and/or Republicans. Somehow, to inquire about the candidate became tantamount to criticism. Hillary’s supporters love Hillary. But we don’t love Hillary just because she’s a woman or a democrat or any of the other things she is. We love her plan for Universal Health Care, her plan for jobs, her work for the elderly, for children and for veterans and current members of the military. We feel confident about her ability to handle national security issues, to work in foreign affairs and to improve the economy. These and other issues form our support for the candidate.Obama is a candidate of religious fervor. And like other religions, his support is based on an unseen and inarticulate faith. This seems to be one key difference in the new culture wars. The neolibs support Obama because he’s Obama. Hillary’s supporters back Hillary because of what she has done and what she would do. Anglachel puts it best in her address to the supporters of Obama:

[Y]our perception of and attitude towards Hillary Clinton is irrational, bordering on psychopathic. As long as you cling to it as a tenet of your faith, you will drive away people who might otherwise support your candidate. As long as so many of us think that Samantha Powers’ “gaffe” about Hillary being a monster reflects the actual attitude towards her in the Obama campaign, your candidate will lose votes. As long as people think Obama has lied about Hillary, has shown her disrespect, has deliberately piggybacked on the CDS spewed by the MSM, you will lose votes.

Obama’s nomination isn’t settled for many of us, including his militant supporters as we can see from the ongoing defensive and hateful comments they make. Some of Hillary’s supporters may be confused by her speech on Saturday, urging people to back Obama. But most of us aren’t confused. The differences between these two candidates is huge, in spite of what Hillary had to say in her speech. The fact of this new culture war is evidenced by this: Hillary is a politician with a long record of commitment and success. Gary from Confluence captures the political import of this culture war as it stands now:

Make no mistake about it, the only thing the new Democratic Party has in common with the old one is the name. It’s like the creature from the movie Alien. The party was forcibly impregnated by usurpers that grew from the inside out, eventually shedding its host and killing it in the process. Obama and his cronies now control every apparatus in the party from fundraising to determining what the new party platform will be. But we must be very clear: Obama is an illegitimate candidate. He lost to Clinton in the popular vote, thumbed his nose at large swaths of the Dem base (women, Latinos, working people, etc.), and became a poster child for everything that is wrong with affirmative action

  • roseeriter

Divide and conquer. Has that ever worked positively?
    I don’t think so.

The female supporters of Obama must like their progressive submissive role…

    NOBAMA.

I, too, believe that Obama is an illegitimate candidate. Bob Schieffer interviewed Charlie Rangel this morning. Rangel referred to Obama as “the President” several times. I found it utterly amazing that he has been annointed as President after just becoming the openly suspect presumptive nominee. What do they think they have in store for John McCain that will allow them to skip the general election, completely? I don’t think I care too much for Chicago-style politics.

I had hoped that Sen. Hillary Clinton ran as an independent.

There are lots of them making noise. Obama will loose. Our time, Hillary time, women and men who respect and love women and fare game and justice for all loving people time, will come.

    Let them talk.

Obama will not get my vote.

Just sitting back an observing the blog push, it’s the SOS, and it’s boring, no thanks.

Limp attempts to anger and divide, and no one smart enough on their side to understand why it doesn’t work.

Someone posted yesterday the blogs have no room for discussion, or certain blogs don’t, anyway, and she was right.

The trolls aren’t good at propaganda, mostly because they’re not writers, or thinkers or analysts.

    So I’ll wait.

I know this if off topic, but I actually just got a email from Democrats.com asking me to sign a petition
keeping Obama from goint to Wall Street for the first town hall meeting. Is this guy a wimp or what…they are afraid that if he goes, he can’t
    handle it…..read this

Rich Republicans, led by billionaire Mike Bloomberg and the corporate executives of ABC/Disney, are demanding to host the first Presidential town hall meeting on Wall Street. This is outrageous for many reasons:

First, Mike Bloomberg is a Republican billionaire who gives to (and raises money for) Republicans.

Second, ABC News hosted the very worst Presidential debate (and there was a lot of competition) on April 16. The first hour was devoted to outrageous and meaningless questions, including one attacking Obama’s patriotism that was written by Sean Hannity! Later, Charlie Gibson attacked Obama for wanting to slightly increase the capital gains tax, which would take a few pennies out of Gibson’s (and Bloomberg’s) cavernous pockets.

Third, ABC hosted the outrageous ‘ Path to 9/11 ,’ a rightwing Big Lie which falsely smeared President Clinton to shift blame away from George Bush.

Fourth, the proposed host is Diane Sawyer , who rose to fame and fortune defending Richard Nixon as Ron Ziegler’s deputy during Watergate.

Finally, they want to hold the Town Hall on Wall Street so they can fill the hall with other super-rich Republicans and attack Obama for wanting to raise their taxes.

Senator Obama, we urge you to Just Say No to the Rich Republican Town Hall – and instead to hold the first debate in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans in an event controlled by We the People, not the Corporate Media.

Sign our petition to Senator Obama: Say No to
    Rich Repulican meeting

Sorry, but he should have too. Some things have to go beyond color to humanity, stand up for your friends.

  • http://NotoVP kathy

I find it amazing how quickly those who were trashing Hillary before are suddenly praising her. As if we (her supporters) are total idiots. I’m sure over the summer that some will succomb to this ‘charm offensive’, but to me it remains just offensive.

You are correct, their methods of winning us over are stupid.

  • NY still loves Hillary

WARNING! Supporting Obama ends any hope of this country remaining free or anything that even remotely resembles a democracy! If Obama wins, and we actually still have an election in 2012, that means 30 more years of Republican rule before America will trust anyone in the “up and coming” generation again. They can count on the “racists” and middle class “geezers” taking away their allowance and grounding them to their rooms till their kids are old enough to vote!

  • NYC Voter

I spoke with Michele Goldberg at the rally for about 20 minutes, I wanted to smack the youthful smug look off her face, but resisted. (any time I don’t realize I’m 42 years old, all I need to do is speak/look at a 20 something to be reminded of the years I’ve lived).

She had her head so far up Obama’s ass she couldn’t understand how any of the sexism or race-baiting issues Hillary supporters feel were used to his advantage could possibly be attributed to Obama.

She is also one of those who could vote for kerry in 2004 but now sees Clintons vote for AUMF as inexcusible. She also dismissed Obama’s support of the bill to characterize Iran’s revolutionary guard as a terrorist organization, while saying he would have voted against kyle-lieberman even though he didn’t show up to vote.

How do they send a twenty-something Obamabot to do a story on Hillary supporters? Doesn’t that say it all about the media???????????????

  • beebop

Isn’t this the Michael Bloomberg who all of the Obama sheeple said would make a WONDERFUL Vice President and get all of the Jews to vote for Obama? If they could actually be proactive … i.e., think and articulate thought … they wouldn’t sound so ridiculous when they go into full reactive mode. Obama afraid of Wall Street? Isn’t that where at least 25 percent of his campaign money came from? I am sure that they can buy lots of fannies in seats to applaud and faint for him to protect their investments … unless (as we suspected) it was just to get Hillary out of the way so that the Rovians could feast on Chicago soulless tail?

Good question, NYC Voter. She disses Gloria Steinem and other “second wave” feminists in that article. When people use the terms first, second and third wave to talk about feminism, you know they don’t have a clue about how crucial these issues are to women. If she continues in a profession, you can be damn sure she will.

I didn’t include some of her more egregious comments, like this one:

Indeed, Clinton has never been just a victim of her gender. When it came to the deeper narratives of the campaign, Clinton benefited, as do many women in politics, from her good fortune of having married a successful political man. Hillary Clinton has spent only four more years than Obama in the Senate, but she was consistently assumed to be a more plausible commander-in-chief than her rival based on her time as First Lady. At the same time, it’s been widely assumed that she’s been entirely vetted, leaving many parts of her life–her disastrous leadership style on health care reform, her role in trying to silence and discredit Bill’s mistresses, her husband’s post-White House financial dealings–unexamined. The slimy right-wing rumor mill that tormented the Clintons in the ’90s has directed its venom toward Obama: He’s the one who has been depicted as a Muslim Manchurian candidate in a smear campaign that has gotten a dispiriting degree of traction.

  • CognitiveDissonance

Quite frankly, I really don’t give a damn if Obama gets asked tough questions, whether by ABC or by Republicans. Let him eat arugula.

  • IndayHill

The neolibs’ unfair, vicious treatment to Hillary & her supporters are very damaging to the Democratic party & to the country.
Why do we hire Obama, when there is another applicant, who has an excellent resume to fill the job of the highest office in the country? Senator Clinton is the legitimate applicant.
After Denver, I will vote for Senator John McCain.I know him better than Obama.
Neolibs, thanks to you for my decision. My family & friends are also sending their “Thanks” for showing them the door! Bye!

  • Andy

Cifre’s article at Savage that said that there is too much ridding on Bill Clinton’s Legacy as President for her to break and run as Indep. I believe he is correct.

The legacy of her husband’s Democratic presidency may simply be too large to casually overlook for the sake of a general election that she could probably never win as an independent.

Now that makes things tough. Do you support someone who stood behind Clinton as long as politically feasible, but still bailed before she was done, or support an Obamatron, or go Republican in those races. Hmmmm. We’ve got a bit of thinking to do here.

Okay they got their way, cheated, lied, suppressed votes, disenfranchised voters, took delegates from on candidate and gave them to another. Thus the party is as they wanted it; divided. Now what the hell is their plan?

Their only concern was to purge the Clintons and Clinton Democrats from the party. Now what the hell is their plan?

Does anyone actually think they can win without half their party? Even if they believe most of the “good” little Democrats will come home to Bama do they not realize that isn’t enough? Now what the hell is their plan?

Cause for all the insults and insistence that they don’t need Clinton Democrats the fact is they can’t win without them. So what the hell is their plan?

    Hope is not a plan.

Unfortunately, I agree. If she cannot pull out the nomination between now and August, I’m afraid we’ll have only 2 options: bad for 4 years and incomprehensibly horrid for the rest of our lives. God save us all.

You cannot run this country from the far right or the far left. These crazies need to understand we have a large country with many diverging opinions, beleifs and habits that must ALL be respected, despite where you, as an individual stand on the issue.

People live in their bubbles and seem to forget, others, unlike themselves exist. They see differences as the right and the left. The right being the enemy and the left being friend.

If you ever want our country to move left, you first must get it to center. It is called the law of logic crazies!

The so called progressive women are quite pathetic believing they are moving women forward in electing Obambi because he is a man of color. This so called new feminist movement, I quite frankly don’t understand. If you look at women’s history, women have always taken a back seat to progress to men of all colors. We are merely following our historical patterns. It is not progress.

To call yourself progressive and somehow be unable to see the vicious attack on women by the media ect.. is sad. It is amazing that people are able to turn a blind eye to injustice if it benefits themselves or their beliefs.

I considered myself from the left, but I have seen the hypocrisy and I will not turn a blind eye. I say, No F–KING THANK YOU!

Senator Barack Obama will give his acceptance speech on August 28, the 45th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Now who would have thought 1 year ago that the first African-American Democratic nominee for President would be the actual one to give his acceptance speech on this memorable day. Dear Friend,

We’ve just finished the most exciting primary contest in a generation, and Barack Obama is our presumptive nominee for President.

Senator Clinton ran an outstanding campaign and we all should be deeply thankful for the passion, energy, and ideas that defined her from the start. Our country and our Party are better off today because the incredible amount of work she and her supporters put into her campaign. We thank Hillary for her leadership, her commitment to America and the Democratic Party.

It can be tough to lose a hard-fought race — I know, because I’ve been there. But no matter who you supported, you’re part of a bigger family — one that shares the same hopes, values, and dreams. This campaign is so much more than any of us or any candidate. It’s about the future of our country, and our collective desire to take it back for the people who make it great.

Over the next few weeks and months, our family will reunite. It starts today, and I’m asking for your help. Reach out to your friends and family, your neighbors and coworkers, and anyone else who may have fought hard for what they believed in. Bring them in and remind them that we’re a family — that together, we can bring about fundamental change and elect a Democratic president.

We have to be unified if we’re going to bring universal health care to America’s families, to help fight global climate change, to ensure a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions, and to end the war in Iraq.

We have to be unified if we’re going to put a Democrat back in the White House.

Over the past few years, we’ve all been part of the work to rebuild the Democratic Party in all 50 states.

When the primary came around, we found ourselves with two once-in-a-lifetime candidates. Barack and Hillary crossed the country inspiring activists, building organizations, and registering new voters. In state after state, we saw record turnout that dwarfed the Republican’s; we saw hundreds of thousands of Americans become involved with a Democratic campaign for the first time; and millions of voters saw just how passionately we feel about the future of our country.

After years of rebuilding and a historic primary campaign, our Democratic community is stronger than ever before. And with Barack Obama, we have a candidate who has inspired millions of people to believe again.

But change doesn’t come easily — and no matter how much we’ve prepared, no matter how inspiring our candidate, no matter how badly we want it to happen, we have to fight for it every step of the way. Absolutely nothing will be handed to us over the next five months — we have to do everything we can to make sure Barack Obama is our next President.

We’ve just seen two brilliant candidates run the most exciting primary in decades. Now we need to come together and finish the job.

    I’m looking forward to it.

    Howard Dean

Oh Howie I plan to reach out to my friends and family, however I doubt you will approve.

Oh really? And just what is BO? IMCPO, he’s a mean, sexist pig too with a TON of arrogance.

I don’t hate McCain as much as I hate BO, so I will choose to vote for the least loathed by me and that would be McCain.

I LOATH BO and I LOATH his wife even more.

Lets face no matter who wins the country will really be wishing for Clinton years back. Bill will be restored to the Great President he was.

  • Dave

The Democratic party has used Un-Democratic means in naming their nominee. If we (HRC supporters) vote for Senator Obama, that also would mean we condone the methods used by the DNC in which Obama was declared the Democratic nominee for President. That is what I am against. The DNC which is controlled by the likes of Howard Dean, Donna Brazil, et. al, has to be forcibly sent the message that we will not vote for Senator Obama. We will not tolerate and support future interfernce in selecting a nominee. The pundits, MSM,and talking heads must also be sent this message that their interference and bias will carry consequences on who they support.

Their plan is the same as it has always been. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. You will vote for Obama or you are a racist. Saying it enough will make it so…

Only thing they don’t seem to understand is that we don’t care anymore (I’ve already been labeled as a bitter, racist, uneducated, appalachian, sexist, stupid, a cultist, a hick, and so on and told I don’t count/they don’t want my vote), and the Republicans never cared.

Like many, I do have a plan, and that is doing whatever is necessary to defeat Barack Obama.

  • Andre

When I read these analyses of the Democratic primaries, and the term ‘radical left wing’ is used to describe those behind Obama, I end up scratching my head. I don’t think it has anything to do with the ‘radical left wing’, unless the analysts leave out the word ‘left’. I consider myself a radical left winger, and very proud to be a Clinton supporter. Radical left winger because of the policies I would like to see become reality. Obama’s backers are in favor of none of these policies which come completely from the radical left wing.

The people who back Obama are young males, primarily and were very convenient when dealing with Clinton, since the ages (twenty and thirty somethings) are resplendent with misogyny. But that’s the past, because Obama has no intention of winning by votes, but intends, as he’s done in every election, to take out the opposition, and these young voters will be very convenient again. The theme taken to its logical conclusion will be “why should we be paying for these doddering old people (like McCain)?”

As I’ve said in other places, racism, and sexism, will now be joined with ageism. I’m sure the obama people have already started (“…the crisis in
Social Security….”)and for some reason I got this idea that Scott McClellan is part of the plan, especially since he said he is considering backing Obama. Maybe to put Rove on the defensive so he can’t help McCain? We shall see.

no worries there mate, Uhhbama wont win in November if the GOP does their usual bully job of campaigning and if by some horrendous chance he stole the GE, he would never get a second term, his economic plans are CARTER ON STEROIDS and his foreign policy is incoherent, if the country survived it wouldnt re elect him…but heaven forfend that should occur, nah the GOP has things on him we can only imagine based on the little that came out in the primaries.. McCain will be POTUS if not Hillary..

Somebody needs to take a close “unauthorized” look at why the leaders of the Democratic Party, including Kerry, Kennedy, Dodd, Carter, and a number of Hillary’s colleagues in the Senate seem so enchanted with Obama and have promoted his candidacy.

Supporting Obama will mean control of your life, your money and your ability to dissent. Just look how he dispatches his grotesque soldiers to web site which do not worship him. Just look at that yanking handshake he gave lieberman when he forced him into the senate pit to thrash him. Just remember what this man is. Think Reverend Wright and Louis Farrakhan in a better looking package, eyes upon turning America into “Pokiston”. Just recall how he thugged his way to this nomination. remember Alsammarae, Rezko, Ayers, Dohrn, Kahlidi. Understand if you are Jewish you are in danger again. Go to mybarackobama and search for “Jew” and find out what this man REALLY thinks of Jews. Can old people, whom he clearly disdains, be far behind ?

If you are a woman, your place in the heavily marxist-rooted Black Liberation Theology has no place for you. Just remember that he takes money from Pakistani’s who bear their citizenship in a country that sets women aflame. Remember michelle reminding you that she wants a piece of your pie to give to someone else and think of how this fits in with Democracy. Then work hard against him according to exactly how scary you find all of this.

If you take a gander over at the Obama Blogs..there is one headed..”We Are One”. Reminds me of assimilation into the Borg. I have read that line about the Borg here and there..always sort of thought it was poking fun..never thought it was literal …

    http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.php?t=15655
Now there is something the general electorate can get behind..snark
These folks are as scary as the Bush’s neocon crowd complete with fanatical religion.I can’t say they are liberal since I don’t find them to be progressive or liberal, just as the neocons aren’t really conservative.

I still don’t understand why after 15 months of campaigning the Obama supporters still can’t name one policy or plan that Obama has for the good of the country. Other than some sort of healing and going to the top of the Hope Mountain and some other such BS…what is this guy going to do for us. When they do try to articulate a policy they state Senator Clinton’s program not Obama’s. Lordy are we in for a long hot summer. Maybe some day in the future the obvious will be revealed and how the selection of Obama had nothing to do with the winning the presidency for the party or placing the best qualified candidate in position to run this country.

Medusa, This cultural war was evident when Cindy Sheehan was camping at Bush’s door step.

The same crowd that “attached” to Cindy Sheehan as a way to co-opt what she was about, are the same fools that are behind BO. Cowards that they are, can not confront de-funding the war and are using BO as a way to side step their own failings with another failure.

Why was it Clinton got a rash of shit for not “apologizing” for the AUMF vote? What was it that MudCat kept saying about the southern vote?

That gaffe by Rangel shows the rather incredible ‘tin ear’ that the Democrats are developing. That level of arrogance has ZERO appeal to voters. I haven’t been there, but I read here that the DNC web site is a picture of Obama…also remarkably arrogant. I know it is not possible for them, but they really should try to at least pretend to have a bit of humility. Its a level of arrogance heretofore only displayed by our current ‘Dear Leader’ Dumbya.

I think the Dems are so dumb that they think Bush’s 28% approval rating means they can run a styrofoam cup and win. They might want to remember the Democratic Congress’s 18% approval rating before they start measuring for drapes.

Michelle Goldberg is a biased observer. She is, by her own admission, an Obama supporter who has edged into near-fanatacism (see her interview In Salon). They don’t even know what sexism (or feminism for that matter) really is. They call McCain a sexist, because he called his wife a cunt supposedly. I don’t know if it’s true or not. I stay out of people’s marriages for the most part. They cite the comment that Chelsea was so ugly because her real father was Janet Reno. I kind of thought that was funny, more because it was typical of right-winger mentality to me. Chelsea had to grow into her look for a while there. Poor kid. The point is that McCain and Hillary have become friends since she entered the Senate. He was not running against her when the comments were made. And a lot of Republicans have gained respect for Hillary over the years.

Does anyone one here lend credence to the fact(the media is claiming) that McCain has alienated the conservatives of the Republican party in numbers that would compare to the number of members of the Dem base Obama has thrown away?
I question that rationale, becuase those of the Dem party that do not agree to Obama are getting someone closer to the center in McCain. Those of the Rep party not enthusiastic about McCain will get some one far more left in Obama. It does not make sense that Conservatives would punish their party and themselves with President more left than the nominee they have.

    Andre,

Historically, the ultra-left has been known for it’s Marxist agenda including group-think, compulsory allegiance to leaders, punitive consequence toward members who don’t toe the party line, exclusive membership based on adherence to a leader and/or ideology, and so on. Whereas the Democratic Party has been thought of as the part of the people, Obama’s Dem party has disowned 18 million of us. And their world view appears to have many similarities with the ultra-left.

bo is farther to the left than Clinton. He has been, for most of his adult and political life, associated with a very specific group of Chicago thugs, radical communist, Marxist thinkers, and deeply racist promoters. I don’t see how such a radical past can translate into a President that represents the majority of Americans.

She raises social issues and policies that would benefit all of us. Clinton is not a centrist, but her efforts are much closer to the moderate middle than his. The New Demokratik Party has assumed ownership of most of Clinton’s policies and claimed them as bo’s own, without regard to his true belief’s, making every effort to prevent dissemination of his actual political past.

If Obama becomes President, he and Brazile, Dean and Pelosi will solidify the DNC into their own machine. Look, they’re starting already! And in 4 years, the party we know, with its splintered factions will become THEIR party, filled with everything J. Cifre says:

They have already proven that their main objective is to bring a new era of anti-White racism, institutionalized sexism, self inflicted ignorance, reality-show messianic pretensions, and utter submission to corporate interests.

At that point, 2012 or 2016, there’s NO WAY Hillary will be able to become President, they’ll make damn sure of that! Even if by 2012, BO proves to be as incompetent as the other Axelrove protege, Deval Patrick, and doesn’t win a second term, there’s no way the “New Democratic Party” would let Hillary win. They’ve learned how to fix an election, and they’ve been rewarded with their nominee. This is the example they set for BO’s followers, the reason the Obamazoids act with such disregard for others, and the price we all have to pay.

But, I honestly think that this country will never elect BO for President. No matter what Hillary tells us to do, we’re not cult followers. The difference between a Hillary supporter and a BO supporter is that we actually chose our candidate, we didn’t fall under a spell. And if we can’t vote for her, we will choose (or not choose) another candidate. We actually have brains that work.

  • Felix Rodriguez

  • Susan1968

The online battle in the Democratic Party blogoshere is now being conducted between deeply entrenched pro- and anti-Obama factions.

The chance that we Clinton Democrats can change any online pro-Obama voter’s position is slim to none.

And vice versa. I’m certain Obama’s paid-400 online mercanaries have quickly learned they’re not persuading the minds of core Hillary supporters.

The Next Battle is In Denver …

Remember, no SuperDel “endorsement” is official until the convention and they can change their minds.

Also note that as of June 7, 2008, a total of 99 SuperDels REMAIN UNCOMMITTED.

    Quote:

“At the time of Hillary Clinton’s suspending her campaign early on June 7, 2008, the count was 246½ for her, and 478 for Barack Obama[2], with 99 still ‘Uncommitted’[3] of the 823½ total then existing. ”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Democratic_Party_%28United_States%29_superdelegates%2C_2008

The reason: nearly Half the party insiders are not convinced Obama can win in November.

Many of the SuperDels who were coerced into “verbally declaring for Obama” caved into the demand to push Hillary out and not anger the AA voting block with any hint of “taking the win away from Obama.”

But while Obama voters act as if this is a lock for their candidate, we who know better understand nothing is a lock until the Denver Convention.

One serious Obama scandal affecting the polls can send SuperDels scurrying back to Hillary’s corner at the convention. This is why she did NOT concede.

We need to help Hillary make a case to the SuperDels before Denver, while simultaneously convincing undecided Democrats who are not online political junkies (some don’t even watch the news) why Obama is the wrong candidate (this will effect polls over the coming month or two).

With that said, there is one avenue we can persue undisturbed by the Obama onlinelegions.

A LOW TECH, REAL TIME CAMPAIGN, revealing the TRUTH ABOUT OBAMA to those voters who have not been exposed to the internet wars.

    1. Talk to friends and neighbors IN PERSON and tell them the truth about Obama. Print out articles about his shady Chicago buddies and hand them out.

    2. Write HARD COPY LETTERS to SuperDels demanding they vote Hillary in Denver. Tell them their own political careers may suffer if they cast for Obama in Denver. Hard copy mailings are harder to ignore than emails and a volume of envelopes makes a point. Send letters signed-receipt-requested to force their staff to log in your letters. It’s worth the $3 it will cost you and when you get those postcards back you can Xerox them and forward a log of your letters to Howard Dean.

    3. Make phone calls to SuperDels in your state and tell them we Hillary supporters have long memories and will not vote for any SuperDel who endorses Obama in Denver. Make these SuperDels start worrying about their own careers.

    Power to the Clintonistas!

  • Felix Rodriguez

“a poster child for everything that is wrong with affirmative action”
That sums it up in a nutshell. The big money that came out for nowhere (small donors my ass) and the kowtowing from more experienced and worthy politicians are clues that this upstart is only riding a wave of “affirmative action” to select a non-white male OR female candidate. You know people are brainwashed when every time they open their mouths all the propaganda surrounding the ONE pours out, they absolutely cannot have a rational discussion about candidates because as soon as they hear that anyone is not supporting their candidate they have a meltdown, even after their candidate has won, they continue to bash and demean the loser (saying all the time that they hate the other candidate and don’t want her anywhere near the ticket, but her supporters better vote for their candidate).

Well, that narrative certainly plays into McCain’s maverick/independent persona. The RW would have obviously preferred someone else, but I suspect most of them will go to the polls and vote for McCain.

But putting out the meme that conservatives will steer clear of him makes him MORE acceptable to moderate Dems and independents. I suspect the McCain campaign would be quite happy with this.

On “Washington Journal” callers were asked Saturday morning what Hillary should say at her speech. Several black Obama supporters said she should apologize. Wonder how many thousand votes were lost just by that! A lot of the Obamaniacs are behaving with a swaggering arrogance that will surely hurt him. Of course, look at him–going to play golf instead of respectfully listening to Hillary!

It has been Bush ignoring Wall Street while giving BILLIONS in no bid contracts to Haliburton and it’s subsidiaries that has killed us. And in the 9th Ward, all we need is 1 person in the audience to ask 1 question. This whole campaign is so blatently racist and yet no one will tell like it is. Especially MSM. I wanted Hillary to keep fighting. I think she wanted to keep fighting. Why was it okay for Ted Kennedy, to take his race to the convention, and he was behind in the popular vote, and 700 delegates. This whole situation doesn’t pass the smell test. For my own sanity, I have got to believe in karma, because if anyone deserves a good kick in the ass and a huge defeat it is Obama.

If you don’t vote for Obama you are a racist. If you ask a question about him you are a racist. The sad fact is after watching with horror his Trinity Church Parson Wright’s rabid racism – in which pews Obama sat for over 20 years. The anti American and racist associates he has surrounding him – the fact that his group of campaigners are Marxists or worse Stalinists is making the average American think hard whenever they see a person who could be for him and usually are. I was thinking of Obama today, and suddenly I began to think about Milli Vanilli. I was a music sales rep back then, and I made a LOT of commission money on Milli Vanilli tapes and CDs. They sold out as fast as I stocked them in the Wal-Marts around here. There were cool music videos playing over and over on MTV, a huge marketing campaign (I was given incentives several times to build Milli Vanilli displays in my accounts), and even when the faux-twosome pretended to perform, their fans were so busy sceaming that they didn’t notice it was all a fake. Those guys even won a Grammy!

But then, suddenly, the hoax became apparent, and Milli Vanilli fell from grace HARD– so hard that they had to return their Grammy, and one of them even attempted suicide. I returned all the Milli Vanilli product from my stores, and no one ever mentioned them again, unless it was to make a snide joke.

I remember reflecting on the power of marketing then, and how it made people think they were hearing good music when they were not.

Obama is just the beneficiary of one of the biggest marketing campaigns of all time. Inevitably at some point, the hype will be exposed as just that, and he will fall to Earth.

What scares me is the amount of damage that can be done before that happens.

My god, what an eloquent articulation of why we supported Clinton. What I can’t understand, is there no one left in the MSM that can read this and not be struck by the intelligence behind these comments; as opposed to Obama supporters who foul mouth inane comments on generalites. Reading the contempt with which many among you refer to Obama, I have no doubt that it is likely that he won’t win the Presidency in November.

It is true that Barack Obama has less experience in Washington than Hillary Clinton, but experience is not as important as the ability to surround oneself with experienced advisors along with the disposition to listen to one’s detractors and critics. Many of Hillary’s advisors were the very same liberal hawks who championed the war when Russ Feingold and a few others in Congress were the voices of sanity in Washington. Obama’s exhortation to think about judgment and not just experience was very persuasive to me: Hillary got the war wrong, and my fear is that, for a variety of reasons not the least of which is the kind of advisors she surrounded herself with, Hillary would be a more hawkish president than Obama. Since I am convinced that this country’s economic woes are bound to be exacerbated by hawkish foreign policies, I thought Obama was a better candidate on the foreign policy front, even as I agree with John McCain that Iraq should not be left to its own devices for fear of genocide. (Incidentally, the fact that Samantha Power, a sensible and enlightening voice on the problem of genocide, in Obama’s inner circle, was another reason to support him, for me.)

Hillary’s health care plan was better than Obama’s, or so I’ve been told by people who are in a better position to judge than I am. But the differences are insignificant when compared to the gulf between each of their plans and McCain’s.

There is another reason why I supported Obama over Hillary. (My second choice would have been Edwards.) Much to my surprise, for the first time in my life, I found myself giving some importance to character over policies. For cultural sensibilities inextricably linked to my education, I suppose, I like Barack Obama. I cannot say the same about Hillary Clinton, some of whose many faces are very appealing, but many of of which are not at all. Her behavior during the campaign was, from where I stood and watched, duplicitous and calculated. I started having good feelings towards her, and defending her vigorously from the callous attacks on her by many Republican critics, but as time passed, I came to see a kernel of truth in some of their complaints. Ordinarily, this wouldn’t have swayed me one way or the other, since policy matters most to me, not personality. (After all, advisor teams mean more to me than the identity of a presidential candidate.) But Obama (not to be confused with the press) struck me as occupying a high ground more often than not. In fact, as some others have said before me, Obama struck me as a more feminine candidate, and Hillary as a more hawkish candidate. This is the first time that personality mattered so much to me, and I wonder if the same can be said of most of you who supported her. Obama strikes many of you as an elitist jerk (probably I will strike you the same way, notwithstanding the fact that I am candid and respectful). And that’s part of the problem.

Okay, but remember jona goldberg and his mom were/are rabid clinton haters who did their best to get prez clinton impeached in the 90s. The goldbergs are right-wing fanatic hacks, so read the book with caution.

This said, there is a bit of Stalinism in the way this new Democratic cabal operates by quashing dissent by whatever means necessary and by demanding ideological compliance of HRC supporters. Should they win the White House, they will be as bad or worse than the Bush regime.

  • trixta

Yes of course. This is what has been evident from the outset–Obama is our version of Bush. BO has even stated that he wants to rule by committee–just like the current chimp occupying the White House! In other words, he wants to be a figure head with others doing the work. Since neither Clinton will stand for this type of presidency, it makes sense that they are being ousted by those who feel they can be Obama’s puppetiers. This type of presidency is also why Obama is so vehemently resisting Clinton for the VP position, I suspect.

The parallels to Bush — savior/king figure, corrupt handlers, a politics ruled by ideological compliance, etc. — is what initially raised my concerns about Obama. Prof. Lakoff (UC Berkeley & founder of the defunct Rocklin Institute) is one of the architects in producing such a messianic leader for the left. Lakoff has long proposed that the Left needs a charismatic figure (like the right!) who can mobilize the masses through visceral politics.

Along these lines, has anyone read the book by Trambley entitled OBAMA: THE POSTMODERN COUP? This book apparently reveals the invisible forces behind the rise of Obama and his handlers.

  • trixta

Tyrone–My husband and I have been talking about this for weeks. As a conspiracy theorist (one of my academic interests) I, too, think this is an eerie coincidence. Just place this MLK convention date within the context of the arbitrary primary rulings of the DNC that disenfranchised MI and FL (2 of Clinton’s most important states) and one can surmise that something has been cooking behind the scenes for quite sometime.

There was an article in Huffington Post, (I think) that outlines the events and identifies the players who were directly behind changing the FL and MI primary calanders. There were Republicans to be sure, but also a couple of Obama operatives lurking in the shadows.

Once upon a time we used to say “follow the money”; now we can say “follow the DNC rulings.”

  • trixta

It is important that we all re-register as INDIES. This way, the Obama Dem’s won’t have our addresses and emails. This way they will get the message, too, that we ain’t buying.

I’m thrilled to say that when I went to one of HRC events, he generously signed three autographs for me!

I’m wondering how left BO is since his health care plan is really no-health-care plan, his energy plan is based on nuclear energy, and his campaign has direct ties with banking interests that created the sub-prime meltdown in this country (google “Sub-Prime Obama”).

Obama is a neo-neo-liberal in progressive robes. Forty-three lawyers comprise his campaign finance committee and have shady ties with a boatload of lobbiests. Goldman Sachs is one of his greatest contributors. Hmmm, I guess we should follow the money, after all.

  • trixta

Even in CNN’s analysis of HRC’s Saturday speech, pundit Toobin still couldn’t figure out “What the Obama youth want from their candidate”–this from an HRC hater!

  • trixta

Pedro, from my standpoint Obama is a very SLIPPERY character who always speaks in utterly vague terms or from both sides of the issues so as to be unaccountable. This affected ambiguity is a political strategy. Add to this his denial by degrees (Wright, Ayers, Rezko, etc.) and you’ve got a pattern that adds up to something–someone who is neither transparent nor honest.

His charismatic persona is also deeply disturbing for those who don’t want to be cult-followers to anything or anyone. Charismatic leaders are dangerous, in my opinion, and very undemocratic because their politics are centered around their own personality and mass manipulation–or coercion–rather than on democratic ideals and beliefs. Besides, I believe in the basic principle of separation of church and state, as it were. If I wanted a messiah I would be religious, but alas . . . .

In any case, in style and governance he’s too much like our King George for my taste.

  • MikeB

“This support seems to go beyond culture wars from people who should know better. Does anybody have a clue?”

    It could be the following. Posted on a blog;

In a nutshell, Hillary was told by many super delegates that they had
made a pact with the DNC not to support her at the convention if she
chose to “Take it to Denver”, and pretty much strong armed her out of
    the race.

Why? According to this source, the DNC doesn’t really care if Obama
is elected as president, as much as they care about all of the money
Obama supporters will be pouring into their coffers. Which is,
apparently, one of the reasons for the huge push to get the Supers to
declare early and get Hillary out. All that money will go not only to
aid Obama’s campaign, but will go to help ALL democratic candidate
campaigns for November. But it isn’t just the money, it’s the “new”
voters. The DNC believes that all that money and all those new voters
will ensure sweeping victories for democratic candidates across the
board. So even if Obama loses the GE, the DNC gets control of the
White House, gets a ton of money, and gets all those fresh,
    impressionable minds.

Obama Girl, with Obama’s name scrawled on he ass and tits, represents the Obama camp’s idea of a “liberated” and “accomplished” woman. She’s a hero for them. Brainless and docile, ready to give it all to Obama, and willing to sacrifice her pride and dignity in any environment to prove it. A teenage boy’s dream? (Don’t know, I’m not a boy).

Hillary, on the other hand, had the Audacity to be powerful and accomplished. She dared to defy the ruthless efforts of the Obama Mafia to get her out of the race quickly. She dared to be smarter, better informed, more experienced, and by far more articulate in debate and town hall type meetings. She made Obama look bad. So Hillary was a “witch” a “whore” a “nutcracker” a “poisoner” and a “nag”.

It is true that Barack Obama has less experience in Washington than Hillary Clinton, but experience is not as important as the ability to surround oneself with experienced advisors along with the disposition to listen to one’s detractors and critics.

That’s a very idealistic sounding, and well articulated notion. But it’s missing something. Anyone who has a great deal of experience in one field or related fields knows this. Experience is crucial as the decision maker – especially at a very high level. It’s exprience which helps us discern between and idealistic plan, and a realistic one, and further, to judge character and timing. A U.S. President who must rely solely on her/his advisors is in a perilous position. There will be many operating on behalf of special interests. There will be many who are eager, but lacking in wisdom. Compare it to any other field in life. Why do I want a surgeon who doesn’t know what to do, but is surrounded by lots of people who have a little bit of knowledge about different parts of the body? I’m sure you believe what you’re saying, but I guess (and I’m sure this will make you scowl), I’m old enough (and experienced enough in my fields of expertise) to know better.

  • pedro

To me, Hillary’s inability to take seriously the virtually unanimous consensus of economists (I am a mathematician, and I have some degree of expertise on the matter) on the issue of the holiday gas tax break was a red flag. Instead, all I heard were accusations of elitism, in the best style of W. Bush. That was a major disappointment to me.

  • pedro

    trixta-

your response is illuminating, well articulated, and thoughtful. I do worry about cults of personality, and I certainly recognize that there is some truth in what you say. (To what degree I cannot say.) I am reassured by what I know from him by having lived in Illinois.

In my case, Clinton’s behavior was significantly more determinative in my decision to support Obama than Obama’s or his supporters’. Cultural sensibilities matter. (It’s interesting to see how they matter in different ways to different people, like yourself and I.)

  • pedro

It occurs to me that I did not adequately address your thoughts on the importance of experience in positions of leadership. (I personally dislike it when people ignore major parts of my own argument in responses to it, so I owe you a better response.)

I agree that experience is important, though there are diminishing returns in that front, from what I gathered on the topic a few months ago by listening to an interesting program on NPR in which psychologists discussed research findings that suggest so. As it turns out, a doctor’s reliability, say, does not increase steadily or linearly in time. There is a point at which it starts diminishing, irrespective of age. It seems that after a while experienced people start becoming overly confident, and this is a problem.

In my mind, then, a better proxy (than experience) for the ability to make good decisions is a combination of two attribute: (1) the ability to surround oneself with diverse sources of advice, especially when one lacks optimal knowledge of a subject; (2) the ability to listen to counter-arguments when one is utterly confident.

Nonetheless, experience (and expertise) do matter, and you give good reasons for why it should. In my case, the dismissive attitude of Clinton towards economic experts was revealing and quite disappointing on this front. In that episode, Hillary seemed to suggest that expertise does not matter, and that struck me as a serious flaw.

Obama is inexperienced and untested, and he is bound to make mistakes. I can understand apprehensions about him. But Hillary and McCain are experienced, sure of themselves, and have made catastrophic mistakes, particularly a mistake of major economic and political proportions about which Obama showed better judgment at the time.

Finally, experience is but one variable among many. I know McCain is more experienced than Hillary, but she seems to have opinions on domestic policy that align more closely with mine (and I would support her over him).

How? Where? When? People keep asserting this stuff, but nobody ever shows me a single specific example. They just all seem to know.

It’s like all the disrespectful, sexist, racist comments Obama supposedly made about Hillary. People constantly say he did that. But nobody has ever showed me a single, solitary example. They all just seem to know he did it.

It’s the old Joseph Goebbles principle at work: “Repeat a lie often enough and people will begin to believe it.”

So just keep repeating this one over and over: “I can vote republican and still be a democrat.”

Here’s yet another: “I can vote for a man who supports the war and still be against the war.”

I’m seeing plenty of evidence lately that the principle works.
