Let’s see….I will agree with you that Chavez was unlikely to be the first person ever to speak the exact words “si se puede.” Maybe someone in let’s say 17th century Spain or Spanish America said it in some unknown context….Maybe the Parisian revolutionaries said something like that in French at the time Louis XVI refused to let the 3rd Estate join the National Assembly….Maybe someone in England (maybe one of the Levellers) in the 17th century said something like that as well when refusing to acknowledge the legitimacy of the enclosures…

Though I’m speculating above, let’s just say you’re factually correct there….

Yet, “factually correct” won’t cut it, since you are trying to make the case that Chavez’s popularization of the phrase is irrelevant, and therefore Obama has as much claim over the phrase as the author of it. Your whole argument is flawed in essence. You want to argue that because someone might have said those words at some point in the history of humanity, that Chavez’s historical use of the phrase is of no real importance, and that Obama was not plagiarizing.

Unfortunately for you, history IS relevant, and phrases or ideas of historical importance DO have an acknowledged source in the person or group who used it in a political or historically meaningful manner. Hence, the theory of evolution is attributed to Charles Darwin even though a contemporary of his (Alfred Russel Wallace) was also working on a similar theory and even consulted with Darwin upon completion of it. Hence, the concept of bellicose capitalist imperialism is attributed to Lenin even though there was a man named Louis B. Boudin whose own analysis of imperialism and war, which was similar to Lenin’s, was published at around the same time. Hence, Cesar Chavez’s “Si se puede” should be attributed to himself even if it is a fact that other people in casual conversation, said something similar before Chavez ever did.

Now try to argue your way out of your logical fallacy.
