Obama’s Nerve: Attacking McCain on Social Security

I just heard on Fox News that Obama today is attacking John McCain for advocating the privatization of Social Security. Oh the irony. I keep asking everyone to read RonK Seattle’s investigative reports on the policy positions of Barack Obama’s economic advisers. You may read all of RonK Seattle’s diaries published at Daily Kos or at his new digs, Riverdaughter’s The Confluence. From RonK Seattle’s “The Audiology of Hope: Dogwhistle Economics 102“:

Our first installment began the task of decoding Barack Obama’s curious appeal to our right-of-center friends and relatives. (His point man on domestic policy is also the DLC’s Senior Economist — a deregulatin’, free tradin’, globalizin’, sharp-shootin’ son-of-a-centrist-gun from Waco Texas, Milton Academy, Yale’s Skull and Bones society and the Chicago school.)

The second member of Obama’s policy advisor triad is Harvard’s Jeffrey Liebman. Specialty: “pensions and poverty”, i.e., “entitlements”, i.e., “Social Security“.

Liebman’s reputation: centrist alarmist and moderate privatizer. [CONTINUED below]

He has supported partial privatization of the government-run retirement system, an idea that’s anathema to many Democrats and bears a similarity to a proposal for personal investment accounts that Bush promoted, then dropped in 2005.

“Liebman has been to open to private accounts and most people in town would say he’s a moderate supporter of them,” said Michael Tanner, a Social Security expert at the Cato Institute

Again, this is from RonK Seattle’s “The Audiology of Hope: Dogwhistle Economics 102.” READ all of RonK Seattle’s diaries published at Daily Kos on his inestigative work in exposing the REAL Barack Obama. (It is no wonder that RonK Seattle fled Daily Kos — and the insidious thuggish Obamabot attack machine — for the more nurturing environs of The Confluence.)

SEE ALSO: RonK Seattle’s first installment, “The Audiology of Hope: DLC Dogwhistle Economics ,” in which he dissects the background and policies of Austan Goolsbee — yes that Goolsbee who shall forever be infamous for his conversations with the Canadian embassy to reassure them that Barack Obama wasn’t really against NAFTA. A RonK Seattle sampler on Goolsbee: He is “DLC senior economist.”

I am reminded of the column of Paul Krugman which I wrote about in February.

THE KEY POINT to keep in mind here is that the next president must be STRONG on policy as well as highly experienced and knowledgeable about the maneuverings of Congress in order to protect Social Security. That requires the next president be experienced in the ways of Washington, D.C. and be stalwhart in his/her determination to protect Social Security.

And must I add the obvious? That the next president must TRULY CARE about protecting Social Security?

Now, here’s what I wrote about and quoted from Dr. Krugman’s column in Hmmm … who is Krugman talking about?:

From “Don’t Rerun That ’70s Show,” NYT op-ed columnist and economist Paul Krugman, February 22, 2008 — the conclusion:

[E]ven if the next president is a Democrat, any serious stimulus plan would face intense, ideologically motivated opposition in Congress. Will the next president be prepared to fight for an effective plan? Or will we end up with a compromise like the one Congressional Democrats agreed to this year, legislation that assuages conservative objections at the cost of undermining the plan’s effectiveness?

Until recently, I thought the biggest political struggle facing the next president was likely to be over health care reform. But right now it looks as if the first thing on the next administration’s plate will have to be dealing with a weak economy.

And if effective action isn’t forthcoming, the next president will suffer the fate of Jimmy Carter, who began his administration with words of uplift — “Let us create together a new national spirit of unity and trust” — and ended up delivering America into the hands of the hard right.

Could Krugman be thinking about this candidate, whose first economic stimulus plan Krugman called “disreputable” and whose second plan the economist found “tilted to the right“?

I remain in a state of shock that the Democratic party leadership could be led by the nose by Barack Obama — who cares not a bit about policy — but instead is solely focused on grabbing complete and utter control.

That’s why he selects economic advisers — who themselves have great power and means — regardless of whether those advisers “tilt” to the right and advocate the privatization of Social Security.

What those advisers believe and advocate matters not to Obama. All he cares about is their ability to help him grab power. Goolsbee is a prime example of an economist with a POWER BACKGROUND, a man of means who is superbly CONNECTED to the elite power structure in this country.

RonK Seattle (I repeat this for emphasis) describes Goolsbee’s resume that shows how well-connected he is:

Goolsbee. Economic wunderkind, forensics champ, MIT PhD, Yale Bonesman out of Waco via Milton Academy, Obama’s chief / top / senior economic spokesman and senior policy advisor.

Oh, and DLC senior economist. … (Read more here.)

It is Goolsbee’s powerful connections that Obama desires. Not his policy views and advice. Which I maintain Obama cares not about.

    Subject obama’s explanation

Comments Obama Explains National Anthem Stance

Hot on the heels of his explanation for why he no longer wears a flag pin, presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama was forced to explain why he doesn’t follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

According to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

‘As I’ve said about the flag pin, I don’t want to be perceived as taking sides,’ Obama said. ‘There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.’ If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.’

    WHAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this could possibly be our next president. I, for once, am speechless

    • anonymous

This must be a joke. That part about changing the national anthem to ‘I’ld Like to Teach The World to Sing’, no one, not even Obama could make such a crazy suggestion.

The history of the real democrat party. Andrew Johnson Democrat president.

Johnson-appointed governments all passed Black Codes that gave the Freedmen second class status. In response to the Black Codes and worrisome signs of Southern recalcitrance, the Radical Republicans blocked the re-admission of the ex-rebellious states to the Congress in fall 1865. Congress also renewed the Freedman’s Bureau, but Johnson vetoed it. Senator Lyman Trumbull of Illinois, leader of the moderate Republicans, took affront at the Black Codes. Trumbull proposed the first Civil Rights bill.
All African Americans visiting this site, take notice that you are reading remarks posted by members of the democratic party. Please help bring attention to this truth. Nice try. But the truth is even WORSE than the rumors.

Obama is a DAMAGED little boy whose arabic muslim father DUMPED his diluted BASTARD ass. So Obama, in typical male hormonal fashion has been blaming his mama and WHITES ever after for his TYPICAL black male father’s FAILINGS.

Who gives a shit whether an atheist kid joins a Muslim-leaning BLACK NATIONALIST faux Christian church or not?

Isn’t it enough that he campaigned for his “cousin” Odinga in Kenya who wanted to install Islamic rule and when he lost let his followers LOOT the nation, murdering woen and children by the thousands and destroying towns to leave 100′S OF THOUSANDS HOMELESS?? Until the president was forced to “share the power” so the murder and mayhem would cease?

THAT is Obama’s level…suck it up and GROVEL to us when you realize the fascist you support.

Truth. There’s tons of information out there that Obama WAS a Muslim as a youth, the son of a Muslim father from Kenya, and educated as one in Indonesia – he even talks about it in his own book. Why don’t you read “Princess Obama Derangement Syndrome” by Melanie Phillips writing in The Spectator – the link and article are on this site. Or check out SavagePolitics.com – there are literally dozens of sources, including OB’s Indonesian classmates (some of whom are CEO’s in Indonesia)who verify it all.

        • Acadian

Your claim makes as much sense as saying that I’m British by virtue of having gone to school with a bunch of British kids.

Going to school with Muslims does not make one Muslim. I notice that nobody accuses him of being Catholic, even though he went to a Catholic school. Is that because you can’t raise irrational fears with accusations of Catholicism?

There’s tons of innuendo about him being a Muslim. No facts, though.

          • StrawberrybitesBarky

The question is when did Barry become Barrack, did he convert? And why won’t he tell us why he changed his name? Americans have the right to know these answers before we hire him.

            • Acadian

Oh, I think you’re going to need to show that he changed his name first.

You needn’t reply if you can’t show that.

          • Hope Floats

It makes more sense that he may be a Muslim since he went to a Muslim public school for a while in a country with a large Muslim population. He said he went to a Catholic school for two years, yet the records show he was enrolled as a Muslim. The school calls that a clerical error. I know he’s no Catholic.

            • Acadian

Well, the church he attends isn’t Catholic. That’s how we know.

But it’s a church, not a mosque. Honestly, the fact that this matters so much only betrays the basic religious bigotry that exists.

      • Clinton Fan

His BIRTH and his FATHER “prove” he was a Muslim.

        That’s Muslim law.

The faith is patrilineal. You don’t ever really leave it, either–you’re branded a “bad, bad Muslim” but you’re still in the club–like it, or not.

I find it interesting that so called LIBERAL people view Obama’s Muslim roots as something “evil” to be “debunked.” That shows you a little slice of the “neoliberal” viewpoint, doesn’t it?

There’s nothing wrong with being a Muslim. The issues arise only when you’re a LOUSY Muslim. Barack knows how to answer the call to prayer, and he can recite his Koran, too. He’s decided that it’s politically inexpedient to do so in public nowadays.

No, Snopes doesn’t say that at all. In fact, they have pictures of him doing what you say he doesn’t do.

      • Anee

Just because you say it is so doesn’t make it so, we believe what we see and hear with our eyes and ears. Obama is a menace to society, we must uncover his deceit before it is too late.
Arcadian how much do the obamaians pay you? It must be nice to be able to sit on your a** all day and save your messiah from the little people like us. If he is such a slam dunk why does he have to pay people like you to visit anti-bama websites, I thought we were irrelevant and you don’t need our votes, according to the devil Brazille. Go back to hole you crawled out of, you are never going to change our minds about your messiah.

Yep, there’s some more of the usual reply.

“Oh, noes! Someone is disagreeing with me so I shall say they are being paid by that meeeeeean ol’ Obama and then I shall say it AGAIN with different words and then I shall use a predictable and worn out slogan!”

Someone is bound to say it. Take it as a compliment that they think you’re heartless, ugly and cynical instead of just plain stupid.

            • Acadian

It’s not that someone is bound to say it. On this site, it seems that damn near EVERYONE says it to the exclusion of anything else.

One hesitates to use the term ‘echo chamber’, but for how long?

    • Acadian

I looked at that site, and what I was stunned by was the sheer atrocity of the design and construction. Geez, warn a guy next time.

      • Vimes

So the design and construction is wrong, what about the CONTENT?

        • Acadian

Well, the content is fine for Hillary supporters who don’t mind sacrificing their principles and voting for McCain, who is far away from Hillary’s position on pretty much every major point.

          • Vimes

            And so is Obama.

            • Acadian

No, that’s not so. Their voting records are practically identical.

              • Vimes

Obama made sure he didn’t have a voting record!

                • Acadian

Gee, it’s funny that I was able to look it up, isn’t it?

That’s something you haven’t even tried, right?

                  • StrawberrybitesBarky

How the hell can we tell where he stands on anything when he votes present all the time and votes with Cheney on energy bills and votes to keep funding the war?

                    • Acadian

Just as Hillary did. She voted to fund the war several times as well. Do you claim to know where she stands?

                    • Hope Floats

She voted for the war to begin with and never apologized for it. Obama made a speech then showed up on the Hill and voted like Hillary, attacking her as “Bush / Cheney Lite” while he is on record as having made an astonishing number of butt-kissing statements like he and Bush had the same strategy on the war.

            • Vimes

Excuse me, but I meant that Obama is more like McCain than Hillary.

              • Acadian

                Nope. Not even close.

                • Hope Floats

I will agree here. The reason Hillary’s more centrist supporters prefer McCain is that the two share more in common than her and Obama who is considered far left.

          • JB

I would say not voting for an unqualified candidate might constitute a principle.

            • Anee

Arcadian is not even worth engaging, he is brainwashed.

      • Leisa

Yes, that page represents a true grassroots movement. It was constructed by a someone unfamiliar to you… a long time Democrat who happens to know more than what a party tries to spoon feed him.

Maybe the rubber in the AstroTurf you play on has made everything a bit too polished for your superior sensibilities… Hmm, I would wonder about that.

        • Acadian

Good thing I’m not a Democrat, then, isn’t it? I just know how to look things up and separate the facts from the fearmongering.

That’s a skill that seems to be in short supply in the US nowadays.

          • Vimes

Yes, Acadian, that brownshirt should fit you fine until you know what it represents. Try all resources before you decide.

            • Acadian

Seriously, though; you telling me that I need to try all resources would be funny if it weren’t sadly ironic.

        • Hope Floats

The great thing about this campaign is how people who are not tech-savvy or usually politically active are becoming involved. He called the site poorly constructed; that does not detract from the message. These voters are trying to keep up on the issues. It is because they feel marginalized by the media.

  • Uppity Woman

Considering that his top ten contributors include Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Lehman, and considering he gave his economic speech on Wall Street, I hardly think that privatizing social security isn’t on his mind.

But you know what? Young people think that’s cool. So let THEM have it. WHen they get a few decades older, they will be slapping their own foreheads when they figure out whose taking their profits. Serves them right.

    • Uppity Woman

He wants to raise Capital Gain tax to 25% for everybody. Doesn’t matter if you have a savings account, some saving stocks, small or large investor. It affects everybody. Very bad idea. The middle class guy gets the same neck knife as the rich guy.

      • anonymous

Agree. It will also slow down an already weak and vulnerable economy. People have to remember that capital gains effect the large majority of Americans through their retirement funds. It also hits small businesses, the main source for job growth. Even his plan to increase tax for corporations will hurt middle class Americans because companies will move a lot of their business to countries with lower taxes.

We all talk about outsourcing and how we don’t want that but it is not the fault of corporations. They owe it to their shareholders to make as much profit as they can. Most Americans own funds and stocks so we benefit from this. Unless they become state owned, and I don’t think anyone is willing to move toward a communist society, we have to look at ways to make them want to stay here. American workers are already doing their part. American workers have one of the highest productivity levels. But that is not enough to offset the large tax disparity between the United States and other countries. Ireland is often mentioned. What the government needs to do, and what John McCain suggests is lowering taxes to make America competitive with other nations so that companies will stay and international companies will want to move here. It will make the risk of starting a new company lower. Government, not businesses, are the ones who can reduce outsourcing.

Someone needs to crunch the numbers on his plan because it is not adding up. Where is money for the rebate going to come from? By the way, when he says his tax plan will help the middle class, it is not the raising of taxes that will, that will decrease your budget. I think it is the rebates that tries to do that, so saying his TAX plan benefits the middle class is not quite true. But where does he plan to get this money?

      • JB

        Barack believes in “fairness.”

In Baracktopia, “fairness” is confiscatory cap gains taxes.

Barack will require you to work. Investing your hard-earned money? Eh, not a priority.

    Acadian:

    Your reading comprehension needs work.

My comment was in reference to a statement from Obama that he didn’t want to be seen as taking sides. I don’t want a president who won’t “take sides” in favor of America. If we don’t evaluate his statements and examine the words he choses, we can’t learn anything about him.

    • Acadian

That first comment, which has Obama saying something about not taking sides, is a fake. The whole quote is a fake. Everything between ‘Hot on the heels’ and ‘I might salute it’ is satire. I already gave the link explaining that.

      THAT’S why you should verify.

      • ulahane

You are correct; that quote is an internet myth. But the video of him with his hands crossed in front to his crotch, during the anthem is real.

      • Room 101

“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds change in an ugly direction”. BARACK OBAMA from The Audacity Of Hope.

How’s that for taking sides. Your Anointed ArabAfricanAmerican is a menace.

        • Acadian

He didn’t say that. The original quote has no mention of Muslims.

“In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

How’s that for a little truth? Do try again, though.

          • AngryWhitePerson

Whoa, no mention of Muslims? Did you even read the paragraph you just dutifully typed up? Who does he mention? The automatons? The Obamabots? He specifically says “Pakistani Americans.” Guess what? Most Pakistani Americans are Muslim.

Do you need to be hand held over everything? It’s alarming, your lack of comprehension, yet your sheer determination to prove yourself right in every instance.

            • Acadian

Ah, so a previous poster falsifies the quote, and I’M the one with a comprehension problem?

Idiot. If I talk about Americans, am I mentioning Christians? No, I’m not. Get a grip.

The reason I can say I’m right is because I have facts to fall back on, and so far all these ‘quotes’ from you guys have proven to be false. Pretty much fact-free, in fact.

    • txchelle

Sorry, it should have been “chooses”, not “choses,” typographical error.

  • barbh

Unreal, a master at the pander and flip flop.

One of the reasons that I originally became a Hillary supporter was because of his “everything on the table” comment with George S. The more I found out about him the less I liked his position on many other things, or rather lack of. Never really seem to know where he stands on anything.

If you buy into the story line that Social Security is in need of immediate rescue, you are then buying into rescue proposals from both candidate that are sure to include privatizing, or, just as bad, pre-funding.
Acceptance of the Greenspan Commission’s pre-funding gave the middle class a Social Security tax increase. The politicians then used that SS surplus to give tax cuts to the moneyed class. And, of course, Social Security received what Bush called “just IOUs” during his failed push to privatize. As hard as most Democrats fought the Bush proposal, I nonetheless must wonder what a Democratic Congress would do with a similar proposal from a Democratic President.

    • Vimes

Yes indeed, SS is NOT in trouble, according to Krugman (whom I trust) and the fact that Obama has put this on the table AGAIN speaks to his Wall Street roots.

florida and michigan in the GE…not going to be giving barky the vote.

you can take that to the bank mr arcadia.

    • Acadian

Funny, Hillary agreed to the same things Obama did. She agreed first NOT to count MI and FL and then agreed to the counting arrangement later (actually demanded it, when she realized she was losing).

So where’s all the criticism of her for those tactics? Nowhere? Grow some guts.

      • Hope Floats

The DNC rules does not allow stripping a state of all its delegates. The Four state Pledge didn’rt say MI and FL “would not count.”

        • Acadian

But the rules DO allow delegates not to be counted in the first place. Hillary was all for that before she was against it.

  • Tommy

Folks,no need to debate, argue or feud over who says what they will or will not do.

Bottom line;American people have no choice except to vote in November and show Obama he just isn’t the American pie America needs or trust.

It’s unbelievable the number of people still supporting Obama. His policy, if he has one sure isn’t being revealed, but what is being revealed is Obama and who the nut case really is.
He doesn’t mind the gas prices rising, the only thing he minds is the price went up to quick.

His way is to slowly take control of the freedom America has known then destroy the hope America has to survive.

What most Americans are not realizing about the cost of oil rising is, is it causes the cost of tires and other products made from oil to increase in price. Tires are 80 percent oil so it’s not just the damn gas we’re paying high ass dollars for it’s other things we have to have in our daily lives.

It’s time to say “NO TO OBAMA,” and stop listening to any crap he spews from his lying tongue.

All African Americans visiting this site, take notice that you are reading remarks posted by members of the democratic party. Please help bring attention to this truth. There is a place for you in the Republican party. John McCain is polling 24% of the black vote in Michigan. Educate yourselves. As you read posts at this site, you will realize why your ancestors were a solid republican voting block. Republicans support their black candidates. You are welcome in our party.
African Americans, look at the comments on this site. Bring your votes and your donations to the republican party. Many of you will wait until the real dems defeat Obama. Remember them. Republicans support their Black candidates. Your ancestors were well treated by the republican party. You are also welcome as many of you are people of faith. People of faith have no place in the DEMONcRAT party.
The real democratic or should I say DEMONcRAT party. Full of baby killers, sodomites, welfare leeches, racists and general dummies.
All African American with jobs and pride, please hear me. When Obama loses, come home to the republican party. This is the real democratic party. We republicans depise them. Evidence is here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1992769/posts
Blacks, this is the real democratic party. The party of “black codes” Johnson, George Wallace and the Southern manifesto.
Republicans freed the slaves and gave you your rights. The first black senators were republican. Most of the signers of the civil rights bill were republicans. Ronald Reagan appointed Colin Powell to be National security advisor. George Bush appointed a black and a black woman to be secretary of state. Dems have been killing your babies, ruining your families and putting you on the back of the bus for advancement for hundreds of years. Educate yourselves…because what you see here is the real democratic party. Never ever vote democrat again. They will betray you every time.

Go to wikipedia, look up black codes and the Southern Manifesto.

The most ‘interesting’ part of that article is the bit where the ‘Kenyan Obamas’ claim to know how Obama was raised; and then we see they didn’t meet him until 1985.

    Yep. Sounds really likely.

  • chimerica

Whether or not social security is “broke”, it is definitely “broken”. It never was the fairest plan to begin with, and now in the 21st century, it is even more inequitable. EXAMPLE: I am a senior who collects social security after working full time for nearly 50 years of my life. I receive approximately the same benefit amount as my husband who also worked full time all of his life. Nevertheless, I could be collecting 2/3 of my husband’s benefit (on top of what he collects) even if I had never worked a day of my life nor paid a dime into it! Our wages have always been lower working class, so it was imperitive that I work in order to support my family. Since benefits are based on earnings, if you earn more (up to the cap) you get a bigger benefit amount. Therefore, a family with one worker making enough money for one of the parents to stay at home, gets an additional 2/3 benefit (on top of their increased benefit to begin with) for making NO ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTION! What’s even worse is to figure out that in this day and age the majority of married women work outside the home in order to help support their families. That wasn’t the case when social security was designed. This is one reason I consider social security to be woefully behind the times, basically inequitable, and in need of an overhaul. So, please, don’t be so quick to defend it as if it is some sacred cow.

  • http://ex-conservative.blogspot.com Glenn Contrarian

All Obama cares about is power?

Then why, after graduating Magna cum Laude from Harvard, did he turn down six-figure offers to go work for social justice on the streets of Chicago? THIS was all part of a sinister plot to grab power? Doesn’t fit, people.

If there’s a general psychological difference between Republicans and Democrats, it is this: Republicans are all about power, and Democrats are not. THAT is why Republicans assume Obama’s only there for the power…because power is a goal of most Republicans, who tend to look with contempt at those who have no such lust for power. Most Democrats, on the other hand, don’t really care to lord it over others.

Most Republicans don’t really comprehend that there are those who don’t care for power (and look with base suspicion at anyone who says so)…and most Democrats don’t understand a psychological need to be the alpha male.

That’s why Republicans are so good at organization…and attempts at Democratic organization have been compared to ‘herding cats’.

And this is why “SusanUnPC”, an obvious conservative, suspects Obama’s only after the power. So often we suspect others of what we would do ourselves.
